I had a similar issue with rasp at 3-4k rpm on my v6 accord. Sounded fine until I removed the precats and them it sounded terrible. Switching to a different j pipe completely fixed it. Your merge pipe not being equal length could be causing it, also the way that the 2 sides merge can make a big difference, that’s the main difference between the j pipe I swapped to. Both were equal length, but something about the way the poppies merged on the first j pipe was dousing that terrible rasp. Both were aftermarket

The unequal length y pipe defiantly is part of the issue. You can make a unequal length y pipe sound good but you have to size the muffler and resonator right. But you will always have slight rasp on decel. I have the same issue on my v6 tiburon I turboed. The y pipe is unequal length it sounds amazing on accel . But on heavy decel it rasp like crazy on light decel it's not too bad. But it's the y pipe. I'm going to try a vibrant ultra quite resonator next and a tomei.

helmholtz resonators help more with drone than with rasp, rasp is usually a wider band of frequencies and you can only really adress one frequency with a J pipe. Drone is usually only in the cab and not on the outside, and the frequency measurement is pretty easy on the inside. For rasp, that tincanny sound (while drone being a bassy, intrusive resonance in the interior usually at 2k rpm) i think a resonator is the better solution.

Had a Greddy EVO 2 exhaust on it at one point too that was a close second in sound. Had high flow cats on both setups.
Rasp in these cars is kept in check by the precats. If you’re running straight pipe then throw a vibrant resonator or similar on each downpipe before the merge and get a smaller resonator for the common pipe. Sound will be perfect with no rasp.

Bro, 1 thing that makes these FWD cars soooooo much faster is properly dialing in the suspension.
Get a suspension where you can at least turn UP(stiffer) the dampening in the back, or also make the rear spring rate 2k - 3k stiffer. This will also have the effect similar to having a larger rear sway bar, so the car will become more steering neutral, away from understeer. It is actually to the point where you wouldn't want a larger rear sway bar generally, and the stock one is perfect.
There is a sweet spot both for handling, and straight-line grip, and you will know when you have gone too far as the car will feel unbalanced, but it will make the car launch significantly better once you dial it in!
I have a K24 swapped FG2, and this makes my car go from spinning 1st hard to throwing you back in your seat, as well as being able to comfortably take 90* turns with ease haha.

It think it's the fact that you're hearing the exhaust gases at so much of a lower speed and velocity. To the point you hear the uneven sound of the exhaust pulses. Awesome stuff. Quarter wave resonators need to point towards the back so exhaust can flow in, bounce off the end and enter the main exhaust at a matched frequency. Also the closer to the front any resonator or muffler is the better it will work since it has longer effectively to work before exiting. For the same reason the distance needs to be accounted for for the quarter wave, from memory length of the resonator is equal to a quarter the distance from the collector. Hope you can get rid of that rasp and still have the volume.

I get the same rasp with my Monte Carlo, and I've read it's because of the engine being transverse. Unfortunately this causes the exhaust from each set of banks to travel different lengths before collecting in the downpipe, in your case, the turbo. ZZP makes a fix for the 3800s, I don't know much about the V6 Accord market though, and I really don't know how you would be able to pull it off other than to rework your entire turbo setup.

Swap out the rear mufflers from flow through to chamber mufflers. That helps most time as universal "mufflers" are only flow through models not chamber ones.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 3 дні тому +1

Chambered mufflers flow like garbage, though. Even when oversized. A better tip would be to have some bare pipe between the axle-back mufflers and the tips. Air coming out of the muffler is turbulent due to the perforations and such, and whenever you have that turbulence hitting open air, it can present as a rasp. The rule of thumb is at least 12" of pipe between any mufflers and any exits or tips.

    • @rushking19

Chamber mufflers take out a lot of tone and they flow bad

@@rushking19 Yeah, if someone wants that hollow roar sound like Roadkill's Muscle Truck, the better way to do it is copy what they did. Put an oversized inlet-outlet diameter stubby glass pack/race bullet-style muffler in there. So if you're running dual 2.5s or single 3.5, put dual something crazy like dual 3.5 in-out race bullets in the dual 2.5s or a single 5" in-out race bullet in the single 3.5. IIRC Roadkill put dual 4" I/O race bullets into their otherwise dual 3" exhaust, then brought it back down to 3" all the way back.

As someone who did some exhaust to modified vw, I have a stock exhaust myself with a cutout. I plan on doing myself a full exhaust but I'm gonna make a muffler full with deadning material and baffled in it, and a valve for a straight throu. The only mufflers that actually I saw working where where the enterance and exist were at 90 degrees and the mufflers are heavy so it has some material in them to deaden the sound

Hey, good work on the 24mm Progress… crazy how much difference they make. You could try welding back in the smaller resonator you just took out…staged. 2x resonator. You can also step the collectors before the merge. The step location needs to be calculated. If you’re unfamiliar with David Vizard, hes got a yt channel. He’s probably in his mid 80’s and hotrod royalty. He has videos on the subject, any many more things that actually matter. Good work dude, the build is sick.

11 min mark.. had same thing going on with my s52 swapped e30, changed from a cheapy ebay header back exhaust to a fancy rms header back kit. The original kit had almost a crotch rocket/exotic sound. Afterwards it was horribly raspy with a full serving of exhaust leak, but there wasnt. I had resonators for both. Ultimately what it ended up being was the y pipe was too close to the headers on the new setup. Old setup had it about mid way down. That did it for me

To get the sound you're after from this engine, I'd be willing to bet on a high flow cat, one vibrant ultra quiet resonator, then two small bottle resonators instead of the rear mufflers.
The catless setup with the cylindical resonator is likely missing the frequencies you're trying to eliminate, and the mufflers are then reducing the volume without helping further. Oval resonators like the UQR tend to be better at absorbing those raspy frequencies, and can be paired with much smaller mufflers to retain the volume. I'd also try to look at some turbo VQ exhaust setups and take some notes, as people manage to make them sound buttery smooth with a turbo.

The squeal by the Acura RL BBK is known and is kinda annoying. Mine only does it on the first 2 stops when cold but seems to be silent after. Add a chamfer on the outer edge of the pad since there will be a small lip once worn down cause it overhangs the rotor by 1-2mm. Check the rotor shield as well to see if it's not rubbing.
