Very helpful. Hat sizing can be difficult but this makes it a lot easier and more accurate. Thank u!
Thank you so much for explaining this! I never knew what to do with Pi anyway, and you just made it all come together to understand!
This was so helpful, thank you dear friend! I am right now crocheting a new hat (beret or something like this) and was wondering how big the circle should be... I googled and you was found :). What a blessing!
thank you sooooo much! i can't explain how thankful i am. i've been wanting to know how to measure increases soo long now. thank you. great job. soo wonderful!
thank you. this tip is going to be very helpful for me. I always faces problems to measure a hat's size. you are a really good teacher.
So so helpful!! You made my life easy today 🤗
I LOVE using basic math to avoid making mistakes and also to ensure proper proportions. I can't believe I never thought of this! When designing knitted hats, I often wondered how much height the top decreasing would make (ofcz It depends on your decrease but this provides a nice baseline). I never ventured into designing crochet hats for just this reason, too. Thank you + thank you + I'm subscribing = I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Yes. Math does work!!! Thanks!!!
You're really knowledgeable woman. That's why all your video tutorials are excellent and presented beautifully because you are smart. Give my regards to Anna. Thanks Joanne and Anna.
+redredwine1277 Thank you. How nice!!! You make us feel wonderful
Thank you so much! This is a really big help to a beginner like me. I ruined the hat I created bec I just followed the pattern without checking this important detail first. Thank yooouuuu ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing this. I had wondered about how to come up with the width of the circle of increases so that it would be the right size for the rest of the hat.
Great teacher!! Thank you so much for teaching me. Bless.
Thank you much 😊I have so many orders for hats and I really appreciate your help.
Excellent tutorial! Thanks Joanne.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! Great insight!!!
Thank you so much for sharing...you are a gem!....about to knit my 1st hat ever🤗
Thank you for your tutorial, I just found you while looking for a beanie pattern for my grandson 👍
Thank you for your explanation...I really needed this information to help me make my beanies.
Thank you, I love making my own patterns but I have had problems coming up with an efficient way to figure out stitch layout for hats and resizing for different head types...this helps so much. I honestly don't know why I didn't think of it since my dad taught me to love math...I guess it was a forest through the trees type moment...anyway thank you.
You are so cute! lol. A normal head measures between 21 and 24 inches. I have a small head, so I save yarn and rounds.
This is good. Exactly what I wanted to know and how to calculate if I need it. Thank you very much 😊
This is so helpful, thank you very much
Hi. I would like o know if the same calculations apply if one knit/crochet in cm.My head is 53.25cm.Thanks
thank you so much! it was very helpful.
Thank you! Very helpful!
Thank you for breaking this down you are wonderful now I understand thank you
Great tip, 👍it will be of great help when working my projects. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing g this most helpful guide. 🧶👍
Thanks you ma'am.
Hello... I did crochet a hat based on tutorial. And the diameter of hat is 16cm. So I try to calculate the round of the hat by this formula. Then I measure the round of hat that I crocheted. And.. Tara... The result is different. If I use this formula the result sould be 50,2656. But, when I measure it the result is 54. And now I want to crochet the different size and I confuse about the size. So what do I do? Does the motif or pattern and yarn give the influence on it?
Clearest explanation I have seen! I also have small head..my solution is to decrease pattern magic circle stitches - have not tried - would that work also?
Yes. Decrease the add rows.
I am crocheting a head band should I crochet or knit less then the measurements of the head since yarn has a give and would stretch ? How much less is the rule usually?
Yes. You can. About 1 or 2"
Thank you so much for this! So then, if I was to start from the bottom of the hat, would I just need to determine how many stitches/inch I do in order to start at the correct size?
If you start at the bottom, it's a piece of cake. You do a chain to go around your head and knit towards the top.
Thank you Joanne for that information is very useful, I appreciate that very much, keep making those videos.🐝🐝🐝
And that is all very well and good. But the question still remains: how many stitches do I cast on? If you start in the centre top, that is one thing.... but for knitting, we usually start at the brim.
You calculate by measuring the head.

.... or about 1/3 of the circumference ??? My head is 21 inches so about the same or a little less in diameter.
Omg woww
i wanted to know that i know the circumference of my hat how many stitches should i cast on to knit the hat ...i know how to crochet ....so i have reference beanie hats ....n i know the number of inches of the whole round....im jst new to knitting and i want to know that if i know the circumference measurement .....how many stiches should I cast on
This hat is done in the round.
Hi, I've been struggling with a hat I'm trying to crochet and I thank you for the explanation and the math lessons, which I needed. I have one question, what if I want a beret and not a beanie type of hat, should I not make the diameter a little more than 7 inches if I want a floppy beret? The type that can sit on the top of your head and you can put it sideways or pulled back a bit. I hope you understand my question? I guess I'm trying to ask you if it's the same for big berets that cover your ears. Thank you for making this video, I really appreciated the math lesson.
I love berets! I used to wear them all the time. What you do, is kee on adding stitches the same way for about 12 inches or as wide as you want your beret to be. Then just go around a few rows and take off often, until you have the size of your head. I usually finish mine with a ribbing (double crochet front and back post)
@@JoannesWeb Thank you very much I will do as you suggest, they take so little time to make.
Thanks for the refresher. ☺️ Do you round it up if for say it’s: 7.63 to 8? Or just leave it at 7? TIA
Usually the yarn will stretch, so I would leave it at 7.
How many stitches should you cast on using this calculation?
Yes, and I'm math challenged!!
I Have a cable hat for a baby and would like to turn it into and adult patern can you please tell me how I would do that?
Find out how many stitches make a repetition and add as many repetitions to make it as wide as you need. Work about 7" of the straight part.
Hi Joanne you are a such a talent lady. I watched all of your videos. I want to make a hat for my niece so can you please tell me how many stitches to start. I can only stitch not crotchet. Thank you so much I would greatly appreciate it
Do you mean knit? We have several hats. Try the ribbing hat: ua-cam.com/video/nTjwYlBhPCM/v-deo.html
Perfect instructions, I just got 1 question how do I determine the length the hat should be?
Usually 7"high for a medium size.
How do you determine how many to cast on when knitting?
This is what I'm wondering.
Wow! you learned those calculations in 3rd grade! What school did you go to! Thank you!!!
❤
Hello, I was wondering if you could please help me knit a hat that fits nicely. I'm trying to knit a hat with a 19" circumference (for a young child). That means my diameter is 19/pi=6.04~~ roughly equal to 6 inches in diameter. But if I am knitting, how do I know how many stitches to cast on to match this? I know that I knit 3.5 inches per stitch using the yarn and needles I am using. However, if I simply multiply 3.5 inches/stitch by 19 inches, that will give me roughly 66 stitches, and that is far too much. I knit a hat with 54 stitches and it fit an adult woman. Could you please help me find out how many stitches I need to cast on with my current gauge to match a 19" circumference, please? Thanks!
How many stitches would 7" be on a straight or circular needles I'm confused
It depends on the needles and on the yarn you use. You need to make a swatch ua-cam.com/video/Gc2cLO32MmI/v-deo.html
So is this measurement just for the crown of the head?
This is to know the circumference of the hat to fit the head.
Please help. So i measured my husbands head around. it measured 90. i divided by 3=30. ok...so at the beginning do i chain 4 and after i slip stich that chain ro make the circle..how many in side double crochet in that circle do i put in it? would it be 30? if so afterwhich do i just begin normal crocheting? u just dont understand why professional crocheters just cant explain things much simpler. very frustrating
ua-cam.com/video/b8jSG34kARM/v-deo.html My dear, I doubt a person's head can measure 90. It's usually 21 to 24 inches. You divide that between 3.14 and the diameter is usually around 7" Please watch the link on top for the vintage cap.
Thank you
Thank you m'am.You r too sweet👌👏👏👌☺
Sorry, I'm new at knitting. Too many unanswered questions. I still don't know what to do after diameter number.
Once you have the diameter you need for your hat, you stop adding stitches and work until you have the length you want.
FORMULA IS : circumference of circle=pi*diameter, therefore d=circumference/pi, if circumference=22inches the diameter= 22/3.1416=7,,,,value of pi is given as (22/7=3.1416)
I am try to knitt baby hat but not sure how many stitches I need for 17 inch around the head and 13 inches from ear to ear, she 6 month old I be so grateful of you help and anyone ales help
Please make a swatch with the yarn and the needles you want to use. Measure how many stitches for 10cm and then calculate.
JoannesWeb
Hello, thank you for getting back to me, 10cm stitch 30 stitches using 5mm needle I don’t know how to work it out, am not good at maths
What I would like, is directions for how to make the hat you’re measuring.
ua-cam.com/video/b8jSG34kARM/v-deo.html
Btw, is the hat knit or crochet? Can't find it ... 😞
Never mind, found it! Thank u 😀!
Yeah, I didn't get it. 😫
What is 17inches and 20 inches
I don't know what is it that you're asking If it's centimeters: 17=44cms if it's 20=51cms.
@@JoannesWeb thank you for trying
I have a problem seeing the video I can only hear you
totally lost! lol
Imlost also. I hated math & didnt fare well in it.
Am I the only adult woman in the world that no single winter fits properly? All hats come all the way down to my eyes and completely cover my sight :(
I also have a small head. Try putting a scarf or something of a sort under your hat, to make it fuller on the crown.
JoannesWeb Thanks for the tip. I’m thinking to try kids hats, for real😂
It you watch "How to knit a hat without a pattern" by Roxanne Richardson, you will be able to easily figure this out. Between Joannes video and Roxanne, you should be able to knit a hat to fit you, Happy knitting.
Why do you need to know the diameter? :(
So you can measure from the center- out (The radius is half the diameter) how many stitches you need to have to go around your head.
math😢😱
We all need it! lol
What a hassle.
This did not help at all, I just wanted simple instructions on how to measure a head for a knitted hat not maths a lesson.
+Jane Bailey I'm very sorry it didn't help. It's actually quite easy. Id you measure your head and take that number, divide it by 3 and you have the diameter. You don't even need to consider the .14. I hope this helps.
@@JoannesWeb with Jane Bailey’s attitude, her hat sizes will always be wrong. You gave her the key, and she threw it away.
Is this knit or crochet? I'm finding this Totally confusing. And, you don't learn this in 3rd grade. I learned this in my sophmore year in high school. Like duh!
This is crochet!
No offense. And I love your channel. But for lamon people. This Is a lot of science. What if you don't know the size but use only the gauge. On the label.
Here are some common hat measurements: tutorials.knitpicks.com/hat-size-charts/
Very, very helpful! Thank you!
