Thank you for this video but a question what if you want to make the body different. Like seed st or all ribbing also you said to knit the body in 2 sizes smaller needle so is that a 1/4 size or a whole size smaller thank you Jean

I love this method! this is the way I like to knit, I don't like reading patterns, and never know how to fix something when I make a mistake or the stitches don't add up. So knowing how to create it yourself is so helpful to me. it really helps to understand the "why" when figuring out the "how"!

Once again, this video has helped me knit a baby hat without a pattern. I was so pleased, I immediately started a hat for myself with no pattern in a special yarn that is Aran plus weight. Using your video and C/O links is simpler than searching for unfamiliar patterns and swatching multiple times to find a pattern that is compatible with my yarn. THANK YOU!

WOW 🤩 what a wonderful tutorial. Clear, precise, easy to understand. Everything a you tube tutorial should be. I am on a budget right now and as some of my yarn is thrifted it's not always easy to match a yarn with a pattern, and I can tell you I have searched all over for different tutorials. This method means I can knit hats as Christmas gifts with the yarn I have, I'm thrilled to have found your channel. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. 😊

I stumbled across this video a few days back after looking for a hat knitting tutorial and I honestly think this is the BEST one out there! It is so clear and so informative, you can actually understand why you do things instead of just doing them when following a video with a ready hat knitting pattern. Simply brilliant, thank you for sharing your knowledge! Now I’m just going back to admiring my first ever hand knitted hat 😉

Glad it was helpful! While not all of my technique videos walk you through the construction of an entire project, my goal is to always give knitters the tools to understand how knitting works, and why you might choose one technique over another in a given situation. I don't see much point in demonstrating how to do something without explaining why/how it works. Wear your first hat proudly! :-)

This tutorial was not only how to make a hat w/out a pattern, this tutorial inadvertently taught me how to knit in the round, how to use magic loop, and how to use DPNs. I learned all of these in creating my first two hats. Thank you so very much!

@RoxanneRichardson Yes, I didn't have the smaller size circular needles/cables for the ribbing on one hat, so I used some DPNs I had never used, and I didn't have the correct length cable for the body of the hat so I had to do Magic Loop. All of this led me to other videos to learn. What a great rabbit hole I went down. I learned so much from your video even to begin with!

1:10 - Head measuring starts. Circumference. Crown to below ears.
2:12 - What type needle for what type yarn. How many stitches for that type of yarn.
Roxanne, you are amazing! So much GREAT information, my head is reeling. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, a comprehensive guide to knitting a beanie hat. I've never knitted a hat, never used circular needles, and never knew how complex the calculations were. As in any build project, from a cabinet, to jewelry to knitting, calculations / measurements are the key. The expert builder of anything, knows how to do the math really well.
What was also very interesting, was how you read a yarn label. All that cryptic info is now illuminated. So grateful for this video. The fine points of making a hat such as pointy effect with gradual narrowing versus flattening out top to fit the shape of your rounded head was an expert tip. Many thanks! Subscribed.

Just FYI: first of all I think your brilliant but, of course, you already know this. I set up a hat, had a miscalculation that I reworked 4 times but it never set right with me! I had 140 stitches in my hat! Newho, by watching ur very clear instructions at the points in which my math went awry, I was able to get to the right math AND confirm that my calculations were now accurate, again, Ur brilliant-thank you!!!

as a moderate knitter, I simply cannot say thank you enough! I have made our grandchildrens hats about 6 years ago...far too large of course (they're 1180 miles away so measuring isn't available) and with double yarn. They loved them (they loved covering their faces :-) ) but one of the boys left their outside and when it found it, some critter apparently had "died" inside. She asked for another, and I've been wondering how to plan correctly for this new one. I'm also doing hats for our cancer center, for those losing their hair, and you've simply made my day with your clearly defined math answers! So thankful! (and I'm off to print out everything I can)

Was trying to find a basic newborn hat pattern to knit, became frustrated because several of them did not include the gauge or were knitted in a weight that I did not have in my stash; so when I found ur video I said, great but I also said Ye Gads this is tedious; however I hung with it, thinking if I can write my own customized sock patterns, I can do this! You are an excellent teacher and provide not just the basic information but optional “if” information and the detailed explanations are phenomenal! Thank you so very much-I love it

I don't know if you look at comments for old videos, but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this video. Knowing the numbers behind hat proportion and construction has allowed me to make all kinds of neat hats without a pattern. Your method is my go to method for making hats now. My goal for 2021 is to take this method and do a more complex cabled and/or stranded colorwork hat. I would love to see more videos in the vein of this one and the fingerless mitts video you have made. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us!

Thank you for these very clear instructions. I've made many hats, but never quite got the hang of adjusting sizes outside of what is given in a specific pattern. Your tutorial explains everything I had a question about.

I love how you explain this.. I didn't know how to really measure a head.. my fiance wants a hat and a semi slouchy hat . I didn't realize he has a larger head so my semi slouchy hats tend to fit him more fitted.. . I also tend to math things out very similar to the way you do.. I just thought it was my way of doing it that probably nobody else thinks like I do but I'm glad to see it's a good way of figuring out how to make hats for different sizes and yarns

Although I have knit lots of hats, I found this video to be really helpful. I’ll be saving it , for sure. I especially appreciated that you did not include using DPN’S to finish the crown. I hate using DPN’S, and I am all thumbs when it comes to using the magic loop technique. Your crowns are stress free, snd I love thst.
I have to admit that I pretty much wing my charity hats, because I know that I am not knitting for a specific person... That makes me happy! My hats will fit someone out there💜
Thanks for a very helpful video. As always, your instructions are so easy to follow.

Thanks for this video. I am a new knitter and have been struggling over this hat sizing stuff. This has greatly helped me to understand what and how to go about it all.

This sizing information is based on stockinette or stockinette-like hats. Some hats are made with stitch patterns that really pull in (like ribbing), so the finished size may be much smaller when relaxed. Just to keep you guessing! :-) But at least you'll know what "to fit size..." means.

And me too Roxanne - my yarn just arrived in the mail a couple of hours ago and I want to knit a hat using the "bulky" yarn. I have only knit 3 hats, none with bulky and I was just on Ravelry trying to see what others did, but I just got more and more confused. And what showed up first on my youtube page but this tutorial! I already measured, have wound the yarn into a ball and am ready to knit a swatch and have done the math...Thank you so much Roxanne! Hugs from Minnesota, Fern

I just found your videos, and Oh My Goodness! You are a wonderful teacher! I have been knitting for a few years, and I’m not afraid to try new stitches, but I’ve only made scarves and shawl-things where gauge is not so important. I’m eager to venture out and make more things. A hat will be my next project and this video was SO helpful! Thank you!

Thank you SO much for sharing Roxanne!! I've just gotten back to practicing knitting and this just popped up in my feed just in time!! I've always wanted to knit hats without patterns especially being that, with the holidays coming up, some of my loved ones live out of state and, so I wanted to send them hat/mittens gifts!! Plus, one day I really want to learn to create my own patterns as well!!❤️🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼
