  • I tried to remember any new guitar I've owned that was this bad. All the way back to my youth,,,, The answer is???? NONE! The Humbucker (Guild LB-1) has a weird bell like chime quality with Reverb/echo added as an after effect. BUT.... I think these are the same PUPS I have in my Guild Starfire 3, which sound great. Do I just have a bad one here?

    Good to se that you can get straight to the point here GV!! 😄 What a disappointment. I also have had very few experiences with truly bad guitars, they always seem to have their own characters, and redeem themselves at some point. I guess, in terms of percentages, we're still both way ahead in the good guitar Vs. bad guitar stakes! 👍 Hope you are keeping well and still rocking.

    The Guild Starfire 3 has a scale length og 24.75. That puts that same pickup in a better suited location. That pickup was designed for that. With a 25.5 scale length it wouldn't surprise me if it comes off a bit bright. More Like a telicaster.

    I'm of the opinion that one of the main reasons for buying from Sweetwater is the customer support. In my experience the 55 point inspection is more marketing than quality control. That said they'd certainly take a guitar with these problems back, for a refund or replacement.

    I beg to differ. I for one like this guitar, I find the pickups are very well voiced. My personal gripe is that many of them seem to have imperfections like blemishes or dents. Tuning stability is an issue wiith mine as well. What's great about the guitar is that with its pickups, you can play anything from blues to heavy metal and it'll sound "right". I don't mind the rocker switches, Iike the idea of something different.

    • @greatvanzini
      @greatvanzini  3 місяці тому

      Hey, Oleg! Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate it! I think we agree at least a little. The quirkiness of it is what attracted me. I have this on my list to fix. I found the PUPs odd. The bridge bucker is the same as what I have on my starfire 3 & I love that thing. For some reason here, I found it lacking. I can only put that in the category of, "What Da!?!" The rocker switches I fully knew going into the deal, so that's on me. It just kind of knocked me back a bit once I got it. It seemed so cumbersome. & wow, the set up was so bad.

      Hey, Harley. Thanks for dropping by, I ordered it via Sweetwater. SW has always made sure things are spot on until just recently. I think the last 3 or so I could have bought anywhere & had the same results. It is on my to do list to fix it up if possible. I guess that's the deal right there. Never had to work on anything from SW until just recently. LOL. It indeed, may become a wall hanger. It does look pretty.

      @@greatvanzini Well that tells me a lot about buying a guitar through them. Thanks for the heads up on that account.
      I would have been put off on that guitar just because of the three rocker switches and their location. It makes for awkward pickup switching. The body color reminds me of my '64 seafoam green guitar. Cameras have a hard time picking up that color. To most people they call it blue.
      Anyway, there aren't that many new guitars that interest me. Last November, I bought an '83 Elite Stratocaster, and that is the best guitar purchase I made in the last decade. I have it setup the way I used to have them back in the 80s. They were the only guitars I ever had sellers' remorse over. They play like butter, and sound great, especially through a good amp!
      Maybe that's something you might think about. Getting something that you used to have that you really liked, and just go wild with it. It's a very gratifying experience.

      @@harleyhexxe9806 They've (SW) been so good for so long. So I am surprised & disappointed. It is sort of gimmicky with the switches but I knew that going in. I have a ton of Guild higher end hollowbody guits made in Korea that are phenomenal. If this represents their Made in Indo guits, well, it's just sad. BUT,,,, Yamaha did just acquire them so I have hope. I have a MIM seafoam strat. One of my faves. This has a pinch of sage color. As you can see I am an old guy so have tons of remorse for selling things. Kind starts with my older bro's 62 strat. Bought it for 125 & sold it for 150. BAMMM! 25 bucks just like that (snaps fingers!)

      @@greatvanzini I'm entirely on the wrong side of 60, so I know where you're coming from.
      Korean craftsmanship is pretty good if you give them quality parts to work with. I have three MIK Fender Showmaster guitars which are really well made, but the hardware and electronics are el cheapo Asian junk. With good hardware and electronics, I have three gigging guitars that will hold up to anything I throw at them.
      Indonesia...well, now you know why they are so cheap.
      Just think if you had your older brother's guitar now. You'd get a LOT more than that! LOL

    Im going to assume you are what, 60, 65 years old? Likely came of age in the 1970s.
    $400 in 1970 had they buying power of about $3,500 today. Imagine that! Man. $400 in today money, however, is about 50 bucks back then.
    Meaning when you were a teenager, would the Guild Surfliner been worth $50 new to you?
    Yes, I reckon so, too.
    Personally, I wish theyd just skip the whole stupid surf rock gimmick. I cant stand that cheeseball crap. The Fender Jaguar became a surf rock favorite because it was good, and cheap, because guitar players had bunk taste in the day, but anyway, it wasn't marketed as the "Fender Surfer Guy Guitar," because that would have been stupid. Guild should have just called it something else, and put it in some different finishes other than ugly ass, see through green.
    That said, $400 for a real, wood guitar? It cannot be beat. It simply cannot be beat. Guild is trying to entice young people to play the guitar. Shame on them?!? No, praise to them for having the balls to do something different, and to try to excite young, broke, would-be guitar players.

    • @greatvanzini
      @greatvanzini  9 місяців тому +1

      Hey, James. Thanks for dropping by. & thanks for suggesting I look younger than I am. It's been a while! 60's! You make some good points. Back in my day, even the crummy ones sold for more than 50, though. As a kid I almost gave up playing early on due to guitars like this. I also had students (back in the day) quit who had better playing guitars. I was lucky, in that I had 2 older brothers that played in a band & encouraged me on. They were also nice enough to let me play their far better (but still cheap) instruments from time to time. Their far better guitars cost them about $ 125.00 used but were still lower end. It allowed me to have a sense of what the future could be. So, to answer your question. When I was a teenager, would the Guild Surfliner have been worth $50 new to me? NO! I would have walked away (& fast) & saved a little more money. In fact I did walk away on many guitars back then. It's not that you can't get a decent player in this price range. I bet some of the Squier's are far better than this or so I hear. These are now 499 at Sweetwater. I have a couple of Sterlings. I have seen a number of videos about how bad they are. Each one came with something wrong from the factory & I got a discount, except one. & the wrong stuff was either fixable or just didn't alter the playability. That said, they all played & sounded way better then this guild & not by a little. Praise to others (Sterling included) but not to Guild. & by the way, if you've seen any of my other vids you know what a big fan of Guild I am. I encourage you to watch part of the video again. Pause it when the guitar body is fully on the screen. Stare at the green. Become one with,,,, BE the green. As someone in the comments said, it's the only thing this guitar has going for it.
