  • This week we're having a look at the Guild Surfliner Deluxe, a guitar that punches well above its weight class in sound, feel, and aesthetic appeal. Sure, at $700 there are some areas that could be refined, but nothing so egregious that should stop you from considering this if you're in the market for an Offset well below the $1k price point.

Curious if the grasshopper still happens with 9s instead of your normal heavier gauge strings. I know we’re talking thousandths of an inch, but since it’s playing the string like a bow vs sticking it has me wondering.
Kinda surprised you also didn’t say anything about the nut. If it was bad plastic, I think you would have. Immediately I was wondering about the tune-o-matic with the vibrato, but you answered that right away. That’s awesome that both of those were addressed with what’s pretty much SOP with offset vibratos. I also liked that you showed the filing. Sometimes bad machining can be addressed with a little cleanup vs replacement.
It’s really cool looking and it does its thing well. It’s not for me, but I can imagine recommending looking at it to someone looking for an HSS strat in an offset form factor.

Excellent, thorough review of this very cool offering from Guild, and nice playing! I bought one (also in Rose Quartz) upon release last summer. One issue: the vibrato assembly was not properly installed in the cavity, blocking the spring. To keep the same screw holes, my local tech routed the cavity to clear some space - now works just fine. A great looking, unique guitar that is very fun to play. Special mention to the DeArmond Aerosonic single coils - they sound great to my ears.

Thanks for really honest review, I want more of this in whole UA-cam... and I still think that for the price it's a great choice.
There's so many brands now putting cheap locking tuners, and nobody mentions any problems with them... what Mike said about these ones applies to probably 99% of guitars within similar price points or less.

I like it and have been pondering buying one. I took a used one in this color for a spin and it felt and sounded pretty good. The neck pocket did have a finish crack and I saw another b-stock online that had one too, so I'm hoping these aren't prone to that, nor improperly set bridge posts. Other than that, I don't use a vibrato so the grasshopper sound shouldn't bother me. Great review.

I just bought a Surfliner Deluxe in glorious Emerald Green. The guitar came in perfect shape, just needed the normal setup- trussrod, pickup height, and action. Now it plays great. As far as the trem "grasshopper" issue, mine came with the same problem. Temporarily, I put a piece of electrical tape around the collet, which solved the problem. I think if Guild came up with a more permanent plastic sleeve, it would be a cheap fix.

I watched a bunch of these Surfliner videos and I counted the 23 frets on all of those, including the first one I watched. Probably to let you bend to 24 fret tones on the high strings. I thought Fender needs to learn from that, and at least, never give less than 22 frets. Never understood the 21 frets vintage thing. You are the first reviewer I have seen smart enough to point out the 23 frets. Wow, can't believe the rest of them missed it. You do a good and very comprehensive review, for sure. Kudos. These are cool in a lot of ways. If they added a second tone for the bridge HB and a seven way pups tone pot or switch, and perhaps a coil split, this would truly be a contender. However, as a straight up five way SSH, at $700 minus a penny, the price puts this guitar in contention with many other new and used guitar choices. I think I might look for one of these used around $450 as time goes on. Otherwise, I would pass, but the last thing I need is another guitar at this point, ha, got way too many already. The pups do sound very good to my ears, plenty of jangle. The bound neck and inlays are impressive. Too sad about the locking tuners, I normally dig those myself. I don't use whammies much, but it seems decent, minus the ping at B string. I guess I just went down the rabbit hole on this one, since they recently showed up at my local Guitar Center and got my curiosity up, but I think of other guitars that seem to be a lot more bang for the buck, etc.

Mike have you encountered any issues with the locking tuners "pinching" the strings too hard or something of the sort? I and another friend have broke multiple strings at the tuner. Not sure if it's a cheap string issue or something with the tuners... or something else...

I would LOVE to see a video on adding a Jazzmaster Rhythm Circuit to a guitar that doesn't have one. I keep finding JM style guitars that have great features for good prices but they lack the Rhythm Circuit. I know some people don't use it but I love it and use it a lot. I have yet to see someone add a rhythm circuit to a JM or a strat or a tele or...
This guitar is a great example of one I'd put a Rhythm Circuit on.

I bouhgt the black one and didn't really like it. 700€ is not cheap for me, I understand is a low price but I just couldn't keep a guitar that doesn't feel fantastic. The neck was to wide for me too. One detail I didn't like at all is that the swich slot looked quite messy. It wasn't cut in a clean way. Also the second position didn't sound right for me. Some great thins to say about it too: the looks are awesome (from a distance) I love the headstock and the finish. It has different aesthetic, quite original and cool. I'm sure someone can fall in love with her, just not me.

I have the first edition and my bridge was left by 1/8th inch 😕 Also, the individual switches didn't hold up, have had to replace 2. There were some other small cosmetic defects too. But, that said, I love the pickups! The look is also just perfectly my style. So, I moved the bridge, bolted on a B5 vibrato and am looking for higher quality replacement switches. If Guild comes out with an update that solves all the problems of the first two additions, I might upgrade then, but otherwise I'll keep this one.

From some who used to work for a big guitar maker that had excellent QC, you had alot of good observations. That finish should not have left the factory like that. $700 is not a cheap guitar. I also agree about the control layout. Too cluttered. That cricket tremolo had me laughing. I had a 4k guitar scraping a spring. It was built up overspray in the trem cavity. I used a file to flatten it out. I like some of that clean playing you were doing. Reminded me of The Last Of Us soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla
