Zero is a great song too. He has a snarling tone to it, which I love.
Zero is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. I hope they get to that one
Jellybelly >
Jimmy Chamberlin on drums is so underrated, dude’s a phenomenal musician.
This song takes me back to my teen years. Still sounds awesome! I'd classify them as mainstream 90s alternative rock, not grunge.
Thank u guys. Heard the song but never knew that was the title. Interesting video with butterfly towards the end
The whole double-album this is on is damn gorgeous music, and a wildly different wavelength from Siamese Dream.
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Smashing Pumpkins - Zero
Speaking about everyone being divided. I think it’s insane that we can’t even come together to have health care for all.
Agree so much. It's the money game.
@@smokeyrameriz478 true dat smokie. I almost always agree with you on everything btw lol. Even though I’m in the Bay Area lol
Fun Fact: In the video, Corgan still has hair. However, when it was released, he had cut all of his hair off. Ever since, Billy has been bald.
-Also this Song Was On Guitar Hero 5
I saw this video debut on MTV at my friend's house down the street. I love this song!!!
Billy is friends with Morello, and Brad Wilk was a drummer for them in the mid 2010s
And Maynard.
I imagine they don't talk politics much with each other these days.
Or maybe it's one of those friendships built on intense debate.
Some people believe the world is flat. Billy Corgan thinks the world is a vampire 😜 all jokes aside, great song! Four Year Strong does a great pop punk cover of this! Four Year Strong actually did a whole album of 90s covers called Explains It All. Definitely worth checking out! Disarm is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song! React to that if y'all haven't already!
Samuel Bayer directed nearly a hundred iconic music videos, including this one and Smells Like Teen Spirit
I always understood it as against corporate america. Being a rat in a cage. Being a worker in a cubicle. You can get mad about it but you're still stuck
So true
Just one of the Machines
I love Smashing Pumpkins! 👊🎃
More heavy Smashing Pumpkins please! I recommend “Silverfuck”, from Siamese Dream.
I always love these episodes. This one might be the best and funniest one ever
Yes! One of my favourite songs by my favourite band from my favourite album!
I'd go with Tales of a scorched earth or F*ck you: an ode to no one next if you want heavier stuff by the pumpkins.
I think the title refers to the dichotomy between hard and soft, similar to the saying about an iron fist in a velvet glove.
Tales of a Scorched Earth is a good one from this album as well
Great song, awesome reaction! I love Hollywood's shirt:-)❤
Looooooooove this song! It's never gotten old. 🔥
Been a pumpkins fan since day one but I never really thought they'd be great live. I went to about 4 straight tours plus the residency in Asheville and I have to say they totally rock live. They put on a fantastic show. Each show was different. For Adore, they came out and played non-stop for over an hour. My bladder was about to explode before they took a few minutes to talk to the crowd! :P
SMOKEY KNEW!!! HELLZ YEAH!(when it went hard again)💜
Omg shout out to Spike TV! MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge) was a fkin great show!
DON'T GET ELIMINATED! 🤣
@@PeeWeeGerman1313 right you are, Ken! 😆
@@ShanLH5 My name isn't Ken hahaha it's Karl. That's okay though 🤣
@@PeeWeeGerman1313 oh sorry you look just like Kenny Blankenship from the show! Ok no you don’t lol… just repeating what Vic always said to Kenny 😆
@@ShanLH5 haha my bad. I haven't seen it in so long. I legitimately thought you were calling me the wrong name haha
Man this song transported me back to the 90s. 😄 Great song but I never add it to my playlists because back then it got absolutely thrashed to death over the radio. 😬
Legendary song. All time banger.
I'm so glad you guys are here. You are so right on with your analysis . We need to band together. In France, they tried to raise the retirement age and the whole country took to the streets.
Guys, your t-shirt budget must be wild (I'm jealous).
Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha is also in A Perfect Circle
Great great band well done trash talkers 🙏 my favourite pumpkins song is Today… Dying for another Radiohead tune😁 I would do Reckoner from “the basement “ next
My aunt bought me this album for Christmas. Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness was a great album.
Pumpkins were alt rock, dream pop, shoegaze, metal, progressive metal.. and unique. Their 2 great masterpieces, Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, have influenced so many bands and artists. They made several great albums but those 2 are in my top 10 albums ever. They were and still are awesome live too, I’m seeing them 8th June this year.
Smashing Pumpkins saved me as a teenager and college student. Please react to more. Bodies, Ava Adore, or XYU
Ava Adore is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. This song is a close second tho
@stacyragland3123 my absolute favorite music video. I am currently wearing a shirt with a picture of Corgan from it
It has a similar theme to Killpop by Slipknot. They got messed about by the record company (pushed to write a certain type of music, have a certain look etc) and so he wrote this song. If I recall, Billy recorded all the instrument parts for this album, as his band mates were getting f'd up (they'd play the songs live, but he did the studio recording on his own)
Love this song I got into 90s music driving my kids to high school
This song was used in the start of the show psych on a episode involving vampires.
A reaction of the song Ordinary by The buzzards would be cool
great song
What I like about you guys is you mainly just let the video play. ❤️
This reminds me of when I worked at Denny's. Damn, I'm old
Great song and still is touching the youth of today if you know where to look. Freeze The Fall have a cover of this song and 17yo Quinn guitar/vocals, Aria 16yo bass/vocals and 16yo Jonah on drums put their own spin on it. Freeze The Fall's originals like VHS, Daughters Of Witches or Broken Glass are just a small sample
Love this track!!! My niece does an amazing cover of it!
Zero and Disarm are my favourite Smashing Pumpkins songs but I love this one too. This is the song that got me into Smashing Pumpkins.
They were the Chicago version of grunge and alternative rock
Smashing Pumpkins didn't have any beefs w/ 90's bands that I recall... I know Billy Corgan (vocals/ guitar) dated Courtney Love (Kurt Cobain's wife) before and after her marriage... Hole was a band that Smashing Pumpkins took on tour when Corgan and Courtney were a couple.
Originally, Billy Corgan was in a band called Deep Blue Dream (which featured Wayne Static of Static-X) in the 80's, which was gothic rock band... He formed the Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago after leaving the band. James Iha (guitar) and D'Arcy Wretsky (bass) joined w/ Jimmy Chamberlain (drums)... There was plenty of drama as James and D'Arcy became a couple.
Originally, the Smashing Pumpkins were not intended to be part of the 90's grunge rock scene... Corgan's vision was to make the band more progressive w/ fantasy lyrics at first... But in 1990, the indie rock scene shifted away from electronics and trimmed out some of the excesses of the 80's music... so, Corgan adapted and wrote songs that ended up on the Smashing Pumpkins debut album 'Gish' in 1991 which were more stripped down and basic rock... Producer Butch Vig (who also produced Nirvana's album 'Nevermind') worked on 'Gish'... and it was released on an indie label Caroline Records... MTV was promoting the 90's 'alternative rock' scene and the Smashing Pumpkins enjoyed some airplay w/ the single 'Siva'... and the ballad 'Rhinoceros'... Sales were promising and with Nirvana and Pearl Jam breaking big in 1992, the music industry picked the Smashing Pumpkins, signing to Virgin Records... despite the fact that they were from Chicago, not Seattle like the other 'grunge rock' bands of that era.
However, the Smashing Pumpkins were a mess by '92... Iha and Wretsky split up... Corgan was struggling w/ depression... It made it almost impossible for the entire band to be involved in the studio, so Corgan recorded all the guitars and bass for the band's 2nd album while Jimmy Chamberlain played the drums. The album 'Siamese dream' was released in 1993 and became a massive hit in the grunge rock era... MTV was playing their music videos... the band was a high profile act on tour... and sales of the record surged to 4x platinum in the US alone w/ the singles - 'Today' ... 'Cherub rock' ... 'Rocket' ... 'Disarm'...
Smashing Pumpkins released an album of unreleased tracks as 'Pisces iscariot' in 1994 and that sold platinum as well.
Despite being labeled as a 90's 'grunge rock' band, Corgan wanted to bring some of his original vision for the Smashing Pumpkins to the next album, a 2 CD release titled 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'... which incorporated more piano and keyboards, as well as the fantasy aspect and imagery not associated w/ grunge rock... It charted at #1 in the US in 1995 and became their biggest record to date, selling 5 million copies in the US w/ multiple MTV singles - 'Bullet with butterfly wings' ... '1979' ... 'Zero' ... 'Tonight tonight'...
Sadly, tragedy struck the band on tour in 1996... their touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of an OD on he+++n and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was also involved using the drug and was subsequently fired from the Smashing Pumpkins... but they used a session drummer for the rest of the tour rather than replace him.
Hoping to distance the Smashing Pumpkins from the 'grunge rock' scene that was fading by 1998, Corgan recorded the album 'Adore' which was much more electronic-influenced... It sold platinum but failed to repeat the success of past records w/ the singles - 'Ava adore' ... and 'Perfect'.
By 2000, Corgan was becoming disillusioned w/ the music industry and the drug use in the band... bassist D'Arcy Wretsky was fired before the release of the album 'Machina/ Machines of God'... The record was a heavier rock record w/ gothic imagery... but fans had lost interest. The album sold gold... the band struggled to hire management... bassist Melissa Auf der Maur (former Hole bassist) did the tour.
Billy Corgan announced that the Smashing Pumpkins would disband at the end of the tour.
Billy Corgan did reform the Smashing Pumpkins in 2007 w/ drummer Jimmy Chamberlain and released the 'Zeitgeist' album... but it was a far different band from the one in the 90's... Subsequent albums failed to sell commercially, but Corgan has kept the Smashing Pumpkins on tour ... In 2018, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain both reunited w/ Corgan in the Smashing Pumpkins.
Try any song off of GISH. No body does any songs from that PERFECT record.
"I AM ONE OR RHINOCEROS" Either is a great pick for my recommendation.
Thank you Smokey, for not saying "clip" on the guess the song
Magazine!
The video was inspired by a Brazilian photographer who showed the pain and suffering in diamond mines. It represents the never ending struggle against whatever is facing a person or society or whatever, I think anyway :)
Next react:
Porcupine Tree - "Trains"
Leprous- "Below"
Thrice- "The Artist In The Ambulance"
Nice call on Thrice
Morning guys! I love smashing pumpkins. But I used to be burned out on this song back in the 90s because my friends gf Ruth would play it and play it and play it and we lived together and I began to feel like a rat in a cage..lol... But it was good to hear now. I like Billy's voice it's definitely unique! 🤓
Love this sting 🔥!
Back in high school, was playing a game of gin with some friends, i was first to draw, and as i did, this song came on the radio, one of my guys started singing the song, and that card put me out, just set my hand down!! All i heard was "the world is a vam-BULLSHIT!!" 23 years later, that is the only way i ever hear the beginning of this song 😂😂
Billy Corgan is the head promoter for the NWA, which has a couple shows on TV and online. They've had some rough times lately, though.
Smokey always sounds like Vince McMahon- " Whatcha got"! 😅
😆
Yes!! ❣️
One of my dad's favorites 🥁🤟🎸
Smashing Pumpkins a.k.a. Squish 'n Squash as the Pastor of my church would refer to them back in the 90's.
Also from the same album is porcelina of the vast oceans is long song but rocks 🤘✌️
I really like this band.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 And this song rules always has.
There is an amazing cover of this one by Frida Snell. So different but so awsome!
You got it smokey. Nothing really changes
I think Billy has one of the best screams ever
Everything on Siamese Dream is worth reviewing.
In my opinion this was the best band to come out of the 90s. Billy Corgan wrote the soundtrack of my youth.
"Zero" is short, sweet and to the point.
I would call the 'Pumpkins as Alt Rock for a broad definition. They could really throw down if they wanted to, but they were more melancholy than heavy.
This double album was very good and about every other song on it was way heavier than what you'd expect from just hearing their radio hits. Billy's guitar can get NASTY.
You guys should check out Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater learning Pneuma, presented by Drumeo. He did a considerably decent rendition the same day.
This song was the wale wars show them for the duration of the series on animal planet
I would love to see you guys react to some Stabbing Westward. Shame, Save Yourself. and some other bangers.
What Do I Have To Do?
@@PeeWeeGerman1313 Another good one!
Saw them here in Portland a few years ago. So Loud and so good , they absolutely slayed it. !!!
I still love you
And I thank you for what you do
Billy owns the NWA promotion
The song is actually about the record companies and how they try to take everyone thing from your success and drain and control all that you due as an artist where you feel there is no way out no matter what.
I thought that it was a shot at the record company, but I could be wrong
AFI is also good, especially Days Of The Phoenix
Bret Hart once said "despite all my rage im still just a rat in a cage" during an in ring promo once... was weird to hear it but i remember thinking it was so cool haha
I need to see that promo now
@smokeyrameriz478 all I can tell you is it was before the screw job happened, I genuinely don't remember much past that, it was just wild to see my favourite wrestler quoting a band I liked
I remember being stoked to read his favourite bands were Pearl Jam and U2 as well
Ah, the 90s. Back when Alternative Rock was the Mainstream.
The World Is a Vampire 🧛♂️
Duke's mayo for the win! Matter of fact.... it's the ONLY mayo and born right here in upstate South Carolina! And no, H6...all white folks don't like it. My daughter and step daughter can't stand it (they claim) but will eat it in things like egg salad, potato salad etc.
This is probably my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. Although 1979 comes in a really close 2nd! 💙👊🏻
Muzzle is their best song!
The funny thing about Red and Blue is it makes purple. Royalty👈
I’ve read so much on this band. The other Members were tortured by Billy. Billy was super obsessed with Control. Billy played all the parts on the albums because he didn’t trust the other musicians. Love the music but it sucks he was that obsessed
I want his Zero shirt!!!
I would never say they're one of my favorite bands. And none of their songs are any of my favorite songs. But Melancholy is a top 5 album all time for me. Invest the time for it all the way through, it's worth it.
Pulp fiction one of my top 5
My Cage Dancing Girlfriend Used To Let Me Join Her In It To Rage To This!! 🔥🔥
SP from Chi in my home state IL, the Land of Lincoln
Love this tune. they are alternative in my opinion
More Pumpkins
🔥
The Smashing Pumpkins are an alternative band
My favorite Pumpkins song is mayonnaise😊
IDC who you are , that is a catchy mufuggin chorus ! Great song all around for real .
Alternative/college rock - not grunge
Nice :)
Id say alternative
It’s ironic but as much as I love smashing pumpkins, I don’t always love Billy’s voice (or all their songs), it comes off as annoying and whiny sometimes. (& why I was nvr a big fan of bands like Blink 182.) But other times it works really well. Like I’ve always felt that bratty sound to his vocals is perfect for this song. But through the eyes of ruby has to be my all time fav pumpkins song. Even more than Rhinoceros which is top 100 fav songs for me. Through the eyes of Ruby is prob top 20. I think that’s why the pumpkins are a fav even though I really dislike some of their music (like I hate disarm, 1979 & tonight tonight). When I love their music it’s literally my fav music. Like I can’t get enough of the melodies, drums, and that wall of guitar sound they do. Like the music by them that I love, is probably the pinnacle of what I most want to hear. Grungy but often epic sounding. Like I’m not the biggest fan of guitar solos, uslaly preferring thee instruments to work together and none of them to stand out, but their guitar solos actually works for me; which says a lot about how good their music is. I’m very picky about what I like which sucks bc I often want to love everything by an artist or band but I just can’t. Like I’m pretty sure Radiohead is the only band or artist that doesn’t have one song I dislike. I may not love every song but I don’t dislike any of them. The yeah yeah yeahs fit that category too. One of the most underrated groups ever. Y’all should def check them out bc they just don’t have enough appreciation for the incredible music they make. Like spittin off the edge of the world and warrior, are songs I want on my funeral playlist.
I think I read this is about Cobain
Phenomenally great song - only SP song I like. Weird how that works sometimes.
Check out the band Soul Coughing song Super Bon Bon.
That's not a woman, that's James Iha. The best i can describe his style is "art geek" so i can understand the mixup. There IS a woman in the band at this time, the bassist D`arcy Wretzky (sp?). Go back and listen closely to that wall of drumming during the breakdown. That is fucking sick. i think Smokey had it right-this song, to me, is about the fruitless emotion driven struggle against the powers that be. They are way ahead of you, and your teen angst is just another lever in the machine. i don't believe this song had anything to do with, or was inspired by RATM, but i could be wrong :)
They were ahead of their time
They were grunge, but Chicago grunge. Grunge has a lot of ballads and acoustic songs as well.
At the time, it was all called "alternative music".
