At one point this double album was the highest selling double album of all time. Maybe still is... Saw The Pumpkins at MSG for this tour and it was amazing. This Pumpkins at their PEAK, fellas. The entire album is incredible. So much good music in there.
I agree except The Wall and The Beatles and 1999 and a couple others edge it out, sales-wise. But is sorta the Pumpkins at their Pumpkinsest! - I personally prefer the less-challenging 'Gish' and how different it was when I first heard it, but this really is their prime.
Gage23 I agree with 1979... I thought Ryan would like BWBW but I wasn't sure about George, lol. I adore their heavier stuff (like this, Zero, Cherub Rock) but I honestly can't think of anyone who doesn't love 1979.
Yes Deftones but my God guys. Deftones has a plethora of good songs other than My own summer, drive and change. Try something more bluesy and groovy for George and Ryan like You've seen the Butcher. Think about their pallet. Something they may be more prone to like.
Billy Corgan is a mad composer, he writes so much stuff he wouldn't be able to record in a lifetime. I don't like his voice either, but man, dude knows how to write a song.
Billy's vocals are divisive, and I understand why it turns some off, but I absolutely fell in love with his voice in the mid-90s when I first heard him in the song '1979.' You should definitely do 'Zero'.
I'm not sure if anyone would truly enjoy him acapella. He definitely wouldn't make it to finals on American Idol 😂 it worked for the time and band though
1979 is the song, their most melancholy & uplifting song... a moment of utter perfection.... 4 minutes of frozen time in that dreamland of melancholic peace and beauty. You have to watch it with the original video they made for it. A sublime piece of work, that hits all the buttons.
Jimmy's amazing. His drumming has such character and distinction. One of the few drummers whose drumming has an equal "voice" if you will in the moving parts of a band.
Huge Pumpkins fan here. Siamese Dream album is definitely where you should start. Nobody kind of likes the Pumpkins. They are a 100% or nothing band. Not many bands had so much heart and creativity in their music. If you were in my living room, I would’ve played you Geek USA for it’s super overdrive then down to slow grinding beautiful riffs. Also, Mayonnaise is perfection. Give them another shot on this album. I can go on and on. You guys are great. Keep it up!!
That is not true, I like their earlier stuff and not even all of it, and don't like the newest stuff at all. I'm 35 and the first CD's I ever bought was Mellon Coliie and the Infinite Sadness so trust me I know lol. I do like alot of that and Siamese Dream but some songs completely miss the mark for me, and most of the newer songs past Mellon Collie. They're talented as hell and I did go to the reunion tour, I wish D'arcy would have shown but at least Billy and James were able to make up for the reunion. Still an awesome amount of good songs, but not every song makes me feel amazing like when I listen to Tool, and they're kind of another band that people would say you're either 100 percent in or out, but I don't think thats true for anything that can involve something that you personally like stylistically, I mean that's why there are bands like blur and sum 41 that produce 1 hit wonders, because on at least one song they brought something a lot of people loved. Oh well no reason for a novel....RESPECTTTTT ::edit:: typo
Regarding the vocals, I like vocals that sound original. There's a certain kind of emotion you can translate singing with this tone that resonates with certain experiences and thus makes it unique and necessary. It feels genuine and real too which many "perfect voices" don't - many good voices sound sterile and meaningless when they end up overproduced.
Billy Corgan’s voice is an acquired taste. To his credit, his speaking voice isn’t unlike his singing voice. It’s not trying to be something it isn’t (*ahem* Scott Stapp *cough*).
Donovan Davis Totally! But at least Eddie maintains his r-factor with his speaking voice too. Scott Stapp has to add the r-factor artificially when he sings as he has a nasally speaking voice. “Werth errrms werd errpahn!”
Yeah, that isn't even the same state, no less ballpark. Haha oh well they will learn more, I'm surprised they haven't heard this, this was on all the time when they were growing up whether you wanted to hear it or not, I'm into both hip hop to the heaviest depths of metal and a lot of other things and I can tell you this was out around when I didn't particularly listen to hip hop but I knew all the hits just from going into stores and stuff, and same thing with this song it was big as some of the biggest rap and hip hop songs of the time, I'm the same age as these guys so it's just surprising they haven't heard it, and since they're starting to understand more proggy stuff and odd time sigs, it's odd he picked one hit wonder sum 41 and blink to compare this to lol, no one else sounds like Corgan, I guarantee they would've known 1979. Oh well freethinkers keep it going, happy one of ya'll liked it, I personally only like their earlier stuff and not even all of it. Keep with it guys, and get ready for TOOL's new album August 30th, 2019, it is going to be amazing, already heard 2 new songs live and the more you listen to them the more amazing they get, and both are over 12 minutes long and supposedly most or all songs on TOOL's new album will be over 10 mins long. #FREETHINKERS ::edit:: typo
Excellent choice, but any song by Queens of the Stone Age would be awesome. I'd recommend "No One Knows" as a possible entry song. Great groove, great transitions and I even heard that the singer for Foo Fighters plays drums on that one too ;-)
Cherub Rock would've been a little more accessible to start with. Bullet is not a bad choice at all but it may have been easier to get into as the second track.
Yeah bullet with butterfly wings is so for "commercial". Its super basic. We all feel like rats in a cage at one point or another. It hits home with about every individual lyrically. Musically and poetically about every song by the Smashing Pumpkins is better.
That's Jimmy Chamberlain on drums. One of the world's greatest. Gotta give the Siamese Dream album a listen. Cherub Rock, Geek USA, Hummer, Soma. Pretty much every song on that album is a master piece.
Oh hell ya! Smashing Pumpkins! Grew up on them during High School, '90s. Generation Xers! Alternative rock. Very diverse stuff. Grunge, punk, noise rock, hard rock, metal, garage band rock, shoegaze influenced. Similar to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, No Doubt (they were more SkaPunk/Raggae punk), Pixies, Weezer, Local H Hole, The Breeders, , etc. Lot of groups back then changed dynamics in their songs (mellow, slow, soft vocals then to punkish fast paced. loud buzzy guitars and yelling, going back and forth). Lot of ppl liked them, different ppl. Even if you listened to other type of genres, music. This type of rock was popular back in the '90s - mid '00s. I used to play stuff like this on my electric guitars. lol
Radiohead- Talk Show Host Muse - Unintended Smashing Pumpkins - 1979, Disarm, Today, Cherub Rock, Landslide (cover) Fleetwood Mac - The Chain, Dreams, Rhiannon (Will you ever win) Love your reaction videos. They always brighten my day!
Cherub Rock would have been a better introduction to the group as his vocals are a little more subdued. I prefer the Siamese Dream album over Mellon Collie even though the latter tends to be more critically acclaimed. Songs from Siamese Dream make you appreciate the musicianship and vocals a lot easier, plus it came out before Mellon Collie. I do hope that you revisit them and do Cherub Rock. It is a much more complete song than Bullet with Butterfly Wings.
I have a big problem with nasally singers. Annoying. but it’s usually the California “skater bands” sound that comes later that I hate. and I give smashing pumpkins and green day a pass. I don’t know why. Maybe you can hear the copycat without there really being much difference.
Seeing you doing 90s alt rock stuff makes me want you to do other stuff in that direction. Would definitely suggest Radiohead (Paranoid Android), Sonic Youth, Slowdive and if you're brave enough some My Bloody Valentine For more Smashing Pumpkins: Zero, 1979, Cherub Rock
He seems to be focusing a lot on Billy's vocals, which totally is reminiscent of Tom Delonge's nasally vocal sound... as I said that he called it nasally himself which is exactly why I can see what he means, even though you're right. Generally the 2 bands are worlds apart aside from that.
I think he's talking more about the structure and the quiet sections transitioning into loud sections which Blink did do with songs like Adam's song, Down and Always. I personally would have used a different band to make this point but I get what he's saying.
Rico agreed. Hummer, Rocket, and Cherub Rock were awesome. This is a really fucked up group in that from ep to breaking up, they really expanded in such a short amount of time. The double disc was great and inventive but the original release was the shit
I didn't like his voice the first time I heard it either. In fact, I think they were popular for a year before I heard the entire "Siamese Dream" album and realized how effing brilliant it was as a whole. Amazing album!! Almost anything from that album is pure GOLD. But especially Rocket, Cherub Rock, and Quiet. Also, George, this is nothing like Blink or Sum41, but I digress. Y'all gave it a chance, though. Kudos! I did eventually get into the vocals, but I hear you George. LMAO.
@@Jonw8222 I know, but you got to be honest Violent Femmes sounds a hell of a lot like Billy Corgan crooning away. And yes actually VF has a very similar sound and structure to their music being they are both punk rock/ SP might be a heavier rock and roll at times, but the spunk and defiance in their lyrics and the song design is very similar. I bet you anything that Billy jammed out to VIolent Femmes a lot in his youth and was influenced greatly by them. And if you think VF is too cute... Listen to The Old Country Death Song....
This is from the mid 90's so it was alt rock not grunge. They were very good and the quiet then loud. Gonna throw salt: Cherub Rock is better. This song was way overplayed especially in Chicago where the Pumpkins are from.
This song is good for representing the sound of the ‘90s, not Smashing Pumpkins. You still need to check out more just to hear their drummer really go off. Jimmy Chamberlin is top class.
Definitely way before Sum 41 and Blink. I don't really hear the similarity but I guess I'd have to know what songs you're thinking of. Blink and Sum 41 were the start of the pop punk silly skater guy scene (not to be confused with skater boi). I've seen in a few comments here the mention of the Pixies. That is definitely the start of the scene the smashing pumpkins were in. 🍻
Billy's vocals can be polarizing, but I've always tended towards unique singers, so it's right up my alley.

SWEATING BULLETS-MEGADETH it's a bery unique song
Hadn't even thought of that but I would love their take on the lyrics
A Tout le Monde by Megadeth would be great as well
They will both love and make fun of it!
1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
It's a perfect song
they still wont like the vocals but yeah. from a songwriters perspective it's perfect.
Gage23 I agree with 1979... I thought Ryan would like BWBW but I wasn't sure about George, lol.
I adore their heavier stuff (like this, Zero, Cherub Rock) but I honestly can't think of anyone who doesn't love 1979.
@CazMatazz It's soothing alright, for my taste it's also a bit too long so I see what you mean.

Mattie Fee Yes!
Far Behind is such a personal track for me. Good choice.
Commented Far Behind as a suggestion, then saw this. Definitely check it out. I think you'll like it. Great solo and some soulful vocals.
Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins is a very different song. You guys should consider filming a reaction to it, as well.
Would be interesting just to see their faces the moment it dawns on them what the song is really about.

Yes Deftones but my God guys. Deftones has a plethora of good songs other than My own summer, drive and change. Try something more bluesy and groovy for George and Ryan like You've seen the Butcher. Think about their pallet. Something they may be more prone to like.

You’ve Seen the Butcher for sure.
Billy Corgan is a mad composer, he writes so much stuff he wouldn't be able to record in a lifetime. I don't like his voice either, but man, dude knows how to write a song.
And he can't read music! That's so amazing to me
I agree. Great writer, terrible vocalist. Not knocking him at all. Some guys can sing. Some cannot. Just life.
You gotta admit though, hIs well-timed screams are the best in business.
Jessica Norman Didn't know that. I've heard the same about Paul McCartney (both of them:)
Billy's vocals are divisive, and I understand why it turns some off, but I absolutely fell in love with his voice in the mid-90s when I first heard him in the song '1979.' You should definitely do 'Zero'.
Mayonaise pls
The best Pumpkins song
Billy Corgan, the singer, is a mega Rush fan. The drummer Jimmy Chamberlin comes from a jazz background and is a beast!
*ahem* that's "William" now.
Jimmy is the greatest drummer IMO
I'm not sure if anyone would truly enjoy him acapella. He definitely wouldn't make it to finals on American Idol 😂 it worked for the time and band though
You should listen to "Tonight" by the same band. Such a beautiful song.

Jimmy Chamberlin's drumming is amazing
sends chills down my spine
1979 is the song, their most melancholy & uplifting song... a moment of utter perfection.... 4 minutes of frozen time in that dreamland of melancholic peace and beauty. You have to watch it with the original video they made for it. A sublime piece of work, that hits all the buttons.
I personally feel that 1979 is overplayed and songs like mayonnaise and cherub rock are my favorite. Just an opinion.
The fact that Pumpkins fans don't recognize Tonight tonight as the true masterpiece of the band amaze me.
Lol I disagree a little bit but I relate to that feeling a lot
That's because Thru the Eyes of Ruby is. But both of those songs are head and shoulders above most of their peers' output by a WIDE margin
it is.. but they will HATE the vocals haha.

@@R6-J4 United States too - if only to marvel at the man's stamina
Jimmy's amazing. His drumming has such character and distinction. One of the few drummers whose drumming has an equal "voice" if you will in the moving parts of a band.
Die Antwoord - "Fatty Boom Boom" .... you're gonna hate it.
Oh well no reason for a novel....RESPECTTTTT
::edit:: typo
Gish rocks!!!
Gish is where they should start.
Always loved The Smashing Pumpkins. They're hometown heros for me lol
People will probably say about Cherub Rock and all, but I really want you to go check Zero, by them; Anyway, keep on the great work!
Regarding the vocals,
I like vocals that sound original. There's a certain kind of emotion you can translate singing with this tone that resonates with certain experiences and thus makes it unique and necessary.
It feels genuine and real too which many "perfect voices" don't - many good voices sound sterile and meaningless when they end up overproduced.
You got a like from me for that. ; )
Chris Cornell being the exception to that.
So what you're saying is we should have a Creed reaction, ya?
B Dubs I don’t know if I could sit through the video, but sure. Let’s add Nickelback, Hoobastank, and Papa Roach to the mix too.
lol dude did you just compare Smashing Pumpkins to Sum 41 and Blink??? Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
#FREETHINKERS

I was never a big Smashing Pumpkins fan when they were contemporary. But *Zero* , that song rocks.
My best friend says the same thing. I'm a SP fan, he's not, but "Zero" is as close as they come to metal, and he loves that one song.

Zero is INCREDIBLE!!
Queens of The Stone age - go whit The flow
Great choice. Mine would be The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret.
Songs for the Deaf is such a good album.
Queens of the Stone age is long overdue on this channel
Excellent choice, but any song by Queens of the Stone Age would be awesome. I'd recommend "No One Knows" as a possible entry song. Great groove, great transitions and I even heard that the singer for Foo Fighters plays drums on that one too ;-)
Cherub Rock would've been a little more accessible to start with. Bullet is not a bad choice at all but it may have been easier to get into as the second track.
Cherub Rock is the only Pumpkins song I like.
True
@@rungavagairun I feel sorry for you.

I would go with Gish before Siamese Dream. Every song on Gish is a sonic masterpiece.

I used to play stuff like this on my electric guitars. lol
Radiohead- Talk Show Host
Muse - Unintended
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979, Disarm, Today, Cherub Rock, Landslide (cover)

@@kurokagesanada Adore is a fantastic album. It is the most heart felt of them all.
Siamese Dream was the first CD I ever owned as a kid.

Not even close.
Michael Chiado probably referring to Tom’s nasally voice

This is literally nothing like anything blink has ever done
He seems to be focusing a lot on Billy's vocals, which totally is reminiscent of Tom Delonge's nasally vocal sound... as I said that he called it nasally himself which is exactly why I can see what he means, even though you're right. Generally the 2 bands are worlds apart aside from that.
Blink is closer than sum 41, like what? That was off by a decade.
@@pwnstar2 didn't block's first disk come out in 93? I think that's closer to Smashing that Sum 41.
I think he's talking more about the structure and the quiet sections transitioning into loud sections which Blink did do with songs like Adam's song, Down and Always. I personally would have used a different band to make this point but I get what he's saying.
They're basically the exact same band.
Rocket is one of their most underrated songs. I feel like they would really enjoy that one

LMAO.
Smash Pumpkins doesn't sound like anyone else. Hilarious hear this guy saying Blink 182 and Sum 41. 1979 would floor them
He was comparing the song structure, not the tone of the vocals or instruments.
Ummm Violent Femmes.
@@christopherrousseau1173 yes please!!
