  • Here is a walkthrough how I integrate the Wes Audio ngLeveler with the Neve 8424 mixing console. I also reveal my secret Auxiliary trick how to get an "Unlimited" number of Stereo AUX sends out from the NEVE!
Lots of talking, lots of useful information ;)

Great video! This is the perfect system for high I/O count analogue automation. To get this level of automation and send control you'd usually need a huge analogue console. Impressive stuff!

Hi Mr. Firechild, I don't see the Moog One? Not even in the other videos. Did you kick it out?

So I was literally sitting at the 8424 yesterday and trying to figure out workflow.
    Many Questions:
    First, if I understood you have [48 DA] -> [48 Outboard] -> [24 In-A 8424] & [24 NGL/In-C 8424] -> [In-A Direct Outs] & [In-C Insert Sends] -> [48 AD]. But also [1-24 to 8424 Mix] and [25-48 to Cue & Cue to Mix] which I presume gets printed back as well?
So, obviously you can automate all 48 channels digitally ITB before the DACs, and you can automate all 48 digitally again after the returns from the ADCs. Using the 8424 and the direct outs you can Also automate in Analog, post processing, on the board, but only for channels 1-24. And the NG-Levelers allow you to further automate in analog, prior to the board, but post processing, channels 25-48 (with 8 VCAs to spare).
Did I get all of that right?
If so, I totally get Why you would want control over Every conceivable scenario, most importantly being: post dynamic analog automation.
Now, since you Have built the ultimate setup, you have a ton of options and opportunities to see what workflow works the best for you, and if any of this is overkill.
    A) What do you find are the pros and cons of automating pre-DAC, in Analog, or post-ADC.
For me, if the final mix is in analog, then analog automation is critical….but not on 48 channels.
Currently I have (a bunch of things but) an Audient ASP2802, which can Sum 32-channels, but only has VCA Automation on 8-Channels.
(It’s being fed by a 32-channel in-line console, so 64 DACs. While I can use a lot of outboard, I don’t need to Automate everything in Analog, much can be pre-DAC. That said 8 is limiting which is why the NG-Leveler is on my list. 16 VCAs for my 8 Stereo Groups / STEMS would be ideal. The 24 on the 8424 would be luxury. 32, 48, or 56 like you now have, and I wouldn’t know what to do with myself!)
You, I think have also set yourself up to mix both ITB and on the Board.
On the 8424 Mix, without the NGs you had 24 VCA and 24 Static (+Returns), adding more VCAs gives you 1) automation over more before the Summing, but also DAW control over the whole mix. Right?
So in the DAW, how is your template setup to move between 1-24 & 25-48?
Another thought, that is a big deal on my console, that new engineers don’t think about, is not just Level Automation, but Mute Automation.
If you have 48 channels, or 64 feeding analog into a console, being able to Mute all channels out of the Mixbus, and only un-Muting them when they show up in the arrangement, can cleanup a lot of Analog Noise Floor in the Analog mix.
I also wonder about your use of the amazing switched Inserts on the 8424.
Having fast access to those is one of the Huge workflow reasons I’m considering it.
You could easily Mult the NG outs into your 25-48 returns, without using the Insert capabilities of the board for that.
Also, are you using No Patchbays?
I’m sure I have a dozen other thought, but I’ll stop there.
Thank You for doing this video though!!

Thanks for commenting :) All summing is in the NEVE console. The 48 channels back to Pro Tools is only for "FX-sends" to various plugin delays, reverbs and 2 Bricastis with AES/EBU. This way I have an "unlimited" number of FX-sends in stereo with automation. I am not using the AUX in the NEVE at all. Regarding MUTE you can automate all 48 channels however 25-48 will happen after processing but before Console-inputs but the noise floor having a C input fully open with a very silent input is very silent... :) Absolutely no worries at all. I am using NO Patchbay, correct. So I have a fixed hardware routing but a nice mix of modern outboards and some SSL E-channel vintage strips. Mainly using SSL X-Rack with total recall and the other channels I try not to turn the knobs too much on basically :)
