  • Prepping my SSL XL Desk for mixing. I really like to seperate my mixing process and get all the technical stuff all done first. I have been hybrid mixing at my recording studio for the past few years and love the flexibility of using both a console and plugins. Routing options and master bus processing are discussed in relevant detail. If you're interested in any other aspects of the recording console, other gear or absolutely any aspect of the process - please let me know in the comments below and I'll do a video about it!

    There isn't too much videos about XL-Desk in studio enviroment so I really enjoy and appriciate you doing videos about it! Love to see how people uses them in their own way and these are showing how clever and versatile you can be with it in everyday use. I just lately found your channel and I'm really happy that I did. Great job, keep it up!😎

      @@davespeakmanmusic Yes! Thanks for the quick response. If you simply buy the desk without any of the 500 series EQ's will you still get that "SSL Sound"? I'm trying to decide whether I should buy the Trident 68 that comes with EQ on all channels, vs the SSL XL Desk that doesn't come with any eq's. I really want that SSL sound, but does it make sense to get it when I can get a console that already comes with EQ vs one that doesn't? I'm just really a fan of SSL. What's your opinion?

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  5 місяців тому

      @natcoziay it’s very clean and adds a little dimension. For me, I needed to add the CAPI preamps on the master bus to give the sound a little more saturation. It was between the XL-Desk and API the box for me so getting some API sound into my mixes is great.

      @@davespeakmanmusic Clean but not sterile....is that correct?

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  5 місяців тому

      @natcoziay it adds something that is really hard to describe. Seems to give the mix more depth. Doesn’t get muddy like some consoles do as you add more channels. It’s subtle, but appreciable. I’ll see if I can make some videos of the summing and how it changes as you split stuff out across the desk…

    The SSL XL-Desk is one of the most interesting consoles available and there are practically no videos on UA-cam.
    Perhaps you can expand on this same topic. When you mix, how do you use the auxiliaries? Considering that there are only 2 mono and 1 stereo and in my case these would be insufficient.
    What are the channels that you output from prototools to the console? Which ones get summed in the box?
    Thank you!

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  5 місяців тому

      I can definitely cover this in a video. If I need to do more than two headphone mixes - I do them in the box and send them out directly.
      When mixing you also have the 3 extra stereo busses as well as the auxiliaries.
      I love the XL-Desk. I think it’s the most versatile small console available.

      They’re great aren’t they. Seems like SSL have stopped pushing it for some reason (maybe the profit margins isn’t high enough). What have you got in your 500 slots?

    Hi Dave thank you for the video, when you are tracking vocals only to a beat that is in your DAW, how do you route the signal through your desk for that purpose only. Use the desk as an audio interfaces essentially? thank you in advance for your respons

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  4 місяці тому

      I still use a converter to interface the desk with pro tools. I’d probably send the beat into a stereo channel out of pro tools. The mic would go into one of the preamps that would feed back in to pro tools. If you imagine it with a normal audio interface, you’re just using the line ins and outs of the audio interface to send to and from the desk. Does that make sense?
