Finally a video from Kaluka that dabbles a little about fighting games. My final wish has been fulfilled and I can finally kindly ask the nurses to turn off my life support. I have fulfilled my sole purpose in life as a soldier of the 19th battalion of San Pedro Tunasan. In my 120 years of living, I can confidently say this video has provided my immense joy so much so than what my 8 children can ever accomplish in life. While I accept your limitations as a human being that has a family of his own (as a family man myself), I expected more non-conventional "duel" or "VS" games shown as examples. An easy example could be Tetris Friends and its heirs, jstris or tetr io. Or maybe Twinkle Star Sprites (a game where you can 1v1 someone in a shmup format). Seeing 1v1s game modes in non-conventional 1v1 games seems to be like an interesting topic and I hoped there could be some discussion be made of it. But alas, such games are beyond your job descriptions and I can only react as a disappointed father that I am (Kratos God of War 2018). I might have underestimated your FGC knowledge as you used Caba vs Uzura as an example. I didn't expected that. The section about 1v1 options and bombing is good and all for a PLEBIAN who requires constant fondling and spoonfeeding of a wet nurse. I hoped for a bit in the video where it's just you anime monologuing all the enemy intent and counter moves possible similar to the video made by Abyss's video titled "TF2 Advanced Scout Guide + theory of Deathmatch and Aim" in the 28:40 mark. Over all, great and excellent video. I look forward with great eagerness to your UA-cam career. My monitor is now 1 shade whiter and dripping wet after watching this. Thank you.

If you're looking for a high quality 1v1 game with a lot of player expression, I highly recommend Rivals of Aether and its recent sequel, Rivals of Aether II. The character design philosophy in Rivals is stellar, and every character (except Clairen) has extremely unique and dynamic tools that often do more than just hit the opponent. There's an element of state control and positioning greater than just where you are relative to your opponent, and how you choose to use the tools at your disposal can vary tremendously from player to player. Take Ranno for example. His bubble is a swiss army knife of stage control, and depending on the player and the situation, a Ranno may use the bubble offensively and put it where they think they can hit their opponent into it for a huge combo, place it defensively somewhere it'll stall their knockback if they get hit with a strong move and save their life, or keep it in reserve and use it off stage to drastically improve their recovery. Especially with some of the more complex characters from the first game who haven't made it to Rivals of Aether II yet, there's so much depth and expression behind every single character on the roster. Extremely good series. I just wish they didn't make the alt key completely fail to function in Rivals 2 because I'm one of the 5 people on the planet who prefers to play on keyboard and normally I just use AutoHotkey to bind that to a different key I can then use as my shorthop key, but even that doesn't work in Rivals 2 and it makes the game substantially harder to play for me specifically and probably at least one other person who uses a control scheme similar to mine.

Hey Kalkua! What a nice video, 1v1s truly bring a unique experience to all kinds of games including DOTAs you mentioned at the beginning, but after finishing the video I can't help myself and I have to mention the toxic side of 1v1s, how peoples attitude and their perspective on the mode ruins the fun out of it. You stomp on a 12v12 match and get called into a 1v1, and you already know it's not going to be a pleasant experience, your "challanger" is filled with bitterness and salt from the loss so either way you win or loose (or don't accept the invite to a 1v1 match) you are open to a 2010 xbox vc chat levels of harassment, and being stuck with a player like this in a 2 man lobby is nothing but misery. It's not that the players are not having fun playing the mode that its unpopular, it's the people who treat 1v1s as their highest priority in life losing out on the positive social aspects and most of the time on the casual friendly sportsmanship. Tryhards aren't an issue, it's the brats and spoiled morons who ruin the 1v1 experience, and as long there are people like this crawling somewhere in the 1v1 lobbies and the 1v1 culture in general I myself see it as a great reason to not participate in the said mode. 9:15 this line of thinking about fighting games has always left me scratching my head. "ooh, was he a genius, or an idiot, or just lucky..? future generations of gamers will ponder his motive for boldly picking Scissors in defiance of the usual Rock strategy!" it was a blind exchange of inputs and each input will *always* win or lose against a certain other, does it matter what anyone was thinking?
I'm sensing a distinct lack of STRAFTAT that I hope is debunked when I get through the 25 minutes and 23 seconds of this video within the immediate future
There's only one type of 1v1 game I enjoy and that's puzzle games like Tetris or Magical Drop 3 (with the occasional fighting game here and there), but even then, I think it's only because I play against my dad. Also, Carolina Sweet Butter Sauce.
hating on rivals is crazy I would’ve thought it has that blend of stupid crazy shit and competitive potential that you love. Also would love to hear your thoughts on fragpunks 1v1 mode to decide ties
This is why I've always preferred 1 v 1 Magic over something like Commander. Commander is fun and all but games really blend together when it's just 4 dinguses trying to outvalue or combo the others. 1 v 1 allows for cooler moments, more expression in deck design, more thoughtful and fast play. And it rarely devolves into a 45 minute durdle fest where one person wins because it's the 5th board wipe and no one has developed a win con, so they all quit.
1v1s were always too stressful to me. but so was even voicechatting. anxious kid i was. still am, but im getting a bit too old to care. though with that also comes lack of care for playing videogames. alas, fighting genre, you had your chance, but you spooked that kid and now hes gone
1v1s are nice to do every once in a while to change things up but I could never play a game that is designed only for that specific mode. Fighting games is an exception but I don’t like that genre of games so it’s doesn’t matter either way. Titan fall 2 did it really well. It was a side thing that could be accessed at any time and wasn’t mandatory. One of my issues is when I take a break from a game and return then I’ll feel rusty. I’m going to be put against someone near my skill level, lose and feel frustrated that I lost because if I just got a warmup then at the very least I could have a better chance at winning. In a 1v1 game I just need to accept the loss and continue losing over and over until I get my groove back. In titan fall 2 I just boot up a match of live fire and if I feel good then I’ll do a bit of duels later on. When I look at 1v1 games like “your only move is HUSTLE” in my head I think that I will only put 20 hours at most in this game before it goes in the bin of forgotten games. I see 1v1s the same way I see zombie games, it should be a side and never the main focus because they burn out quick.
i love antoni i mained wrecking ball in overwatch and it feels the exact same, except much less fun because you cant insta gib everyone like beggars can
I think I both agree and disagree. Since I play a lot of 1v1 games, I know the feel when a team game just sucks balls. But on the other hand, peak gaming is honestly just how you have the most fun. Mostly all of my favorite games of all-time are single player experiences. Not to mention the modding for those single player games. And on top of that, nothing in this world is scarier than complete mastery over a single player game. Like, seriously, watching someone who has over a thousand hours on a single player game will have you thinking they're a full-time wizard with the amount of magical bs they're doing.
1v1’s are cool in games that I already play, but picking up a new game that only supports 1v1’s like a fighting game always sucks because suddenly you have to suffer through 50 hours of practicing in a training room in order to use 90% of your moveset. The only way you get to play these games prior to training for a million years, is to play against someone else who also doesn’t know what they’re doing, which the game will very rarely ever queue you with. Ig the genre isnt for me, but man i do wish fighting games were actually accessible at times.
I’ve seen this same sentiment all over of the uninitiated dreading having to spend hours and hours to even play one match. Truth is you could just hop in fgs, press buttons and have fun. Some games are better for this than others, but I digress. You could spend less than an hour in the lab and know enough, and even if you don’t want to, Play ranked and you’ll fight against others who are at the bottom of the ladder along with you. Once you stop having fun not knowing something, you’ll find it hard not to learn new shit, and start actually having fun optimizing situations and combos and stuff. Believe it or not, fg players find practicing fun. That’s why they do it.
also the air bombing part at 19:00 reminds me of air neutral in Melty Blood. I can see equivalents of the options: - air shot = anti-airing - air strafing making it difficult for air shotting = aerial movement options for most characters - shooting a rocket at the ground = punishing landing recovery - counter bomb = double jump/spaced superjump - surfing the rocket = instant air block to make the jump-in possibly minus - drop off the position a bit = move back and punish landing recovery
Note as a long time engineer main: when you say its the only MGE class, or the only class in tf2 with an uninteresting mirror match, i dissagree. An engie mirror match is just as interesting if not more so than almost any othe class. Take even something as simple as a distraction sentry. You can put that down in a fraction of a second to waste the enemies engineer's shotgun shell, then punish, you could run minis, then when you place it down, walk in front of the shot to try to tank for your mini, your oponent could either take the sentry out immediatley, and make sure there is no threat, or just try to gun you down fast enough and deal with the sentry with no engie to back it up, which is rather easy. In a non MGE setting, creative sentry placements, your loadout, and your effeciency comes into play way more. Even somthing like what shotgun you use and how you use it. Bonkers plays as engie work! Deny your opponent high ground by slamming a dispenser they have to waste shots on in their path. Play with your threats, and its more interesting than a soilder who jump at u and whoever hit more rocket win.
Do try guilty gear though, the music is excellent (it’s the other reason I got into it), the most recent one is fairly beginner friendly, and I’m hopelessly addicted to fishing and this series in general I got 100 hours in like two months and I am NOT A hardcore gamer, plus it is quite inclusive and the characters are very varied in design, but consistently great, and have I mentioned I love the music?
But Kaulka, no matter how much I practice (which I never do because that’s boring), I Always lose 1v1 fights therefore they are stupid and a waste of everyone’s time.
This was true like 10 or 15 years ago. Now it's mostly pick the op character or spam the op move. No one has honour online or plays for fun. A bunch of 9 ft tall create a characters. Also it's the same chance they will have a bad team mate. Playing your best will make the same difference.

- air shot = anti-airing
- air strafing making it difficult for air shotting = aerial movement options for most characters
- shooting a rocket at the ground = punishing landing recovery
- counter bomb = double jump/spaced superjump
- surfing the rocket = instant air block to make the jump-in possibly minus
- drop off the position a bit = move back and punish landing recovery
Wish I wasn't hot garbage at MGE
But Kaulka, no matter how much I practice (which I never do because that’s boring), I Always lose 1v1 fights therefore they are stupid and a waste of everyone’s time.

hi kaluka
Id say a better comparison than bingo would be smash bros, both are not tryhad centric but still allow for tryharding to exist
This was true like 10 or 15 years ago. Now it's mostly pick the op character or spam the op move. No one has honour online or plays for fun. A bunch of 9 ft tall create a characters. Also it's the same chance they will have a bad team mate. Playing your best will make the same difference.
what is your opinion on moo
