Chevy or GM Gear Shift Selector is Loose // The Fix // Stuck in Park

  • I hopped in my truck to take my son to school, and I was shocked to find that my truck would not go into gear. The next thing I noticed was how loose and floppy my gear shift selector was (the actual gear shifter itself in the truck). It basically was sliding around and took essentially no effort to move it which is unusual.
Luckily a quick internet search showed me what to look for, but the help videos out there were not real clearly filmed or explained. One guy had the bushing on backwards. Another guy recommended you rip your dash open first to see if there’s a problem in there, and if there isn’t THEN go under the truck to check this part… and I’m thinking to myself “why wouldn’t I go check the easier place FIRST!?!?”
Since I wasn’t in a big hurry and I was lucky enough to only be stranded at home, I thought I would try to help someone else out with a clearly filmed video, explanation, and part numbers. I really hope this helps bail someone else out of some trouble! God bless y’all!

In 2016, we decided to move out of town with our two boys so that they could grow up outside, raising animals, working hard, and learning to love their family. Some days it feels like we've bitten off more than we can chew, but there is always something interesting going on around here. We wouldn't trade our lives for anything now! Our videos show you what it looks like from day to day in our life. House and building projects, gardening, firewood, raising animals, hunting, fishing, gathering mushrooms, and much more.

My daughter is doing the same thing we paid a man $250 he only fixed the cable. He took all the parts around from the in fact I don't believe he's coming back and me and my daughter have been left stuck without being able to make it to work grocery store anything for the past 2 days and Monday morning is back to work. At this point I don't know who to turn to far is fixing it but I do know I had to give it to God we're actually going into 2 years new here in Huntsville Alabama and it's sad when people do you like this when all you're trying to do is make it. We're not mechanics but if you could tell us where we might can go to or find someone to help us get this fixed it will be greatly appreciated please and thank you. Sad part is this is my 22 year old daughter first vehicle.

You just saved me!!! I was stuck inside a car wash when this happened to me and 33 weeks pregnant. I managed to shimmy myself under the vehicle and the very kind car wash attendant was able to get the cable reconnected and me out of the wash. I’m safely at home now and have a fun project for my husband when he gets home.

Literally had the whole family loaded up, went to shift into drive, to pull away, and the gear shift had nothing, just like the video shows. With all the financial uncertainty in today's economy, this saved me hundreds of dollars. I went to take my kid to school, and this happened to me. After a quick google search, I found this video. Off to Auto Zone I went to buy the exact part you mentioned. It was a little challenging to get the bushing into the cable housing, even though I used the C-Clamp and definitely tough getting the cable onto the transmission peg, I ended up using some vice grip pliers to help get the bushing onto the peg because it's gives you a lot more pressure. I sent $12 when it could have cost me several times over that. Thank you!!!

Thanks so much for uploading this video. I was at a gas station. Tried to put my 09 Tahoe into drive and it got stuck in reverse. Got under the car and bingo. I saw the problem immediately. A couple of notes for others..
-You will be able to see this problem on the driver side.
-If the gear is engaged (like mine was in reverse), then you will have to manually push the lever into park to get the cable reattached. I suggest putting the emergency brake on to be more cautious.

Same issue on my 2012 2500. Thankfully was in neutral so I got towed home across my small town. Before I checked UA-cam I took the dash apart…oh well. No biggie. I was excited to find things under my truck just as you showed - excited because that meant the problem was diagnosed and solution straight forward! Thank you.

maaaan thank god for this video seriously thank you bro for making this video ..i was on the freeway at 6 am here in california and it started to rain like crazy and i was going uphill so i went to shift my car into 3rd gear to go uphill well the shifter was like exactly how you showed yours all wobbly and not grabbing onto any gear i started to panic and got off the freeway i couldn't put into park or reverse and to make it worse i was running out of gas so i just jumped back on the freeway and headed back home barely made it on E to my place finally i got the bright idea to put the emergency break on to actually stop the car i was just gonna turn it off and wish for the best so i finally got into my driveway put the emergency break on and turned the car off came inside my place was just bummed out was about to bite the bullet and call my mechanic to come help when i decided to do some research and it lead me to your video so i went outside and got under the car and sure enough that cable was disconnected from the shifter my car is a bit older so its not exactly the same issue with the plastic part but i was able to figure it out with the help of your video brother ..thanks again for putting this out there to help people like me..

Thanks for making this video. I had the same issue happen to my 2011 silverado out of the blue. Wouldn't crank, wouldn't start, and gear shift lever is loose and shows "R" on instrument panel. I couldn't pull any ODBII code. I was stuck! Then I spotted your video. It was perfect. After watching, I slid under the vehicle and there was the loose cable end at the transmission exactly as you had shown it. You saved me HOURS of work trying things. Thank you for this video friend! My Suburban did the same thing. After a better key word search, I found your video! I was able to find the cable within seconds and saw that bushing had broken. I went and got the part and had it fixed within 10 min. I was deflated thinking o was going to spend thousands of dollars to fix. $30 later for the part and a C-clamp, and I was running like a charm. Thank you so much!

Gear shifter had play and was not catching just like yours. I googled the problem in this video came up. I then got under my truck and that's exactly what the problem was. Very helpful. Saved me. I was stranded out of town with exact same problem. Got the 14041 clips. Smallest one was the best fit just like you said. Thank you so much. Only thing I had to do different was cut off extra plastic. Flat side is towards the tranny. And then snap a C clip into the groove of the peg. Works like a champ. Thanks again

I had to install two of these pos parts, first one last one drive, second was an actual part for this and it was a joke.
TOTAL WASTE OF TIME TO ME, I APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO AND SUCH.
WHAT I DID WAS USE MY MACHINING SKILLS AND DID IT PERMANENT FOR LIFE FIX.
Took off the swing trans arm, ground off the small rod thing and drilled a hole instead. A bolt with half threaded end and smooth first inch or so and several washers to help freely move and a Teflon nut to stay for life. Took 30 minutes for that, and hours of irritation taking out these pos parts and installing them grrrr
IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY I STRONGLY SUGGEST DOIN WHAT I DID
THANKS FOR THE HELP MAN IT GOT ME ON THE RIGHT PATH!!

The bushing for my 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 was a dorman 14110. It was a small black flexible piece that pushed into the linkage with my fingers, and then pushed onto the small rod without tools. I wish I could post a pic because only one piece from the box fits. The rest are for something else. Thanks for pointing out the issue!
