The fungi knows that she's already infected so it didn't want to destroy the host by mangling her to death. The showrunners explained in their podcast that the reason why she froze is because the fungi is starting to take over her brain and is keeping her still to make the infection faster. Her trying to light the fire is the last ounce of humanity left in Tess.
That makes senseeee I just thought it was because that infected was not a runner but the stage after a runner. Those guys kinda scare me more than clickers.

I get the points about Ellie BUUUT I think you are expecting her to behave as if she wasn't raised through the apocalypse. Everyone in this scenario has to either toughen up or gets killed and for a teenager on top of the normal moodiness she would have no reason to trust people she doesn't know and totally would be snarky.
Try to see it through that lens, also, sometimes she isn't being snarky, like on the hotel the "are you kidding me?" was more like amazed because she hadn't seen one before

@@StudioGek you're not supposed to like her right now - Joel is sort of a lone wolf and suddenly he has this bratty, feisty kid tagging along with him. Both him and the viewer are understandably pissed off at Sarah being 'replaced' by this bad-mouthing little shit lol.

6:50 Gotta say that Ellie was totally me when I was her age, I swore too much for my own good and every sentence I had to throw one in, plus the sarcasm and overload of questions. Seeing Ellie is like watching my 14-year-old self live through the zombie apocalypse. Plus, for Ellie's sake, she grew up an orphan in a pandemic world, she was raised by the government that you saw do public hangings in the QZ. I think we should all be glad she has any sort of humanity in her, and her wanting a gun seems important to her, because she was raised to defend only herself.
Exactly and they don't realize that she has lost so much and idk how they don't like her yet. They won't be saying that for the full season that's for sure, no spoilers tho. The fact is they can have their own opinion but know all the facts first before judging her.

But I think the guys clearly want Joel and Tess and even Ellie to survive through their journey and you begin watching Joel and everybody else other than Ellie. So seeing Ellie throw sass at Joel and sarcasm is annoying to them since they respect Joel. Although if we begun with Ellie's story and met Joel after, I'm certain their opinion on his sarcasm and sketchiness would be a lot different and they would prefer Ellie. It's all about perspective.

She swears all the time and acts disagreeable because she was born after the end of society as we know it. She grew up around people who are violent and don't know how to argue. Tess sayed this in episode one in the apartment about the beat up. "They grew up after the apocalypse. They don't know how to argue and just start swinging. Stupid 19 year olds" or something like that.

comparing ellie to sarah is just really wrong, sarah grow up in a normal world, ellie was born and grow up in the apocalypse. And ellie is not an inconvenience to joel or anyone, she has never been to the outside world before and get excited about every little thing she sees.
I find the Ellie hate weird. Like, she's an actual child. I get finding her annoying, kids are annoying, but there's nothing overly hateable about her.
And comparing Ellie is Sarah is wild. Of course Joel had a better relationship with her. She was his child. And Ellie is a child born in an apocalypse who wasn't raised by parents. She was raised in a military school. She's been traumatized her whole life and now she's been tossed around like cargo and now she has the pressure to be the hope for all of humanity.
So, yeah she's allowed to be an asshole sometimes.
It's not that deep. Ellie in the show is annoying and it's supposed to be annoying that's the first basic step in the daughter father dynamic. I don't think you get the point of the show

They're focusing so hard on that part of her character that they're glossing over why she would be annoying. Even the guy in the white sweatshirt points out that she's just 14 and understands that leaving Tess to die is traumatic for her. She's a kid, of course she's annoying!

@@justamailbox6741 It's like I can understand that she's annoying, but there's nothing hateable about Ellie. She's a needed energy for the show and for Joel. They just went too hard about an actual child that it was kind of uncomfortable. But that may just be me.
The hilarious thing is, Ellie is no more annoying than any of them are. To me, all these guys are "kids" and annoying because they're a fraction of my age :D
This is the first I've seen people dislike Ellie at first impression, don't worry, you'll warm up to her, she is one of the best characters in the game.

@5:17 It was in the flour so the infection spread fast. The first wave of infection was through consuming flour. If you guys didn’t notice, it was shown all over the 1st episode, how their erderly neighbors are eating cookies and biscuits. Joel and her daughter avoide the infection because they didn’t eat pancakes and he forgot to buy the cake.

Ellie has never known a world that is kind, she's never been in a world where the infected didn't exist. She's 'feral' because she had to grow up without an ounce of love as an orphan being mistreated by the military dictatorship Fedra. I can only imagine what she had to go through while fighting for resources against the other children & people in the quarantine zone. If she acted any other way than this, it'd be super sus.
Definitely agree with this. We totally understand her situation, but just don’t know why we SHOULD like her right now. What she is is an inconvenience that bugs our main character and we just feel that. But I hope they build her up and give her a great arc

@@StudioGek there is no 'bugging our main characters' going on. they made a deal and chose to get ellie from point A to point B to get a reward. she isnt inconvenient bc without her they literally wouldnt get any farther than boston. ellie is a normal teenager going on a path that she has no say in w people she doesnt know. she is a young mouthy girl who is traumatized by the entire way of living. she hasnt done anything wrong like i dont get it
well ellie is 14 years old, it's a given that she's a little bit annoying but annoying and nosy is what joel needs because he's been cutting himself off from anyone since sarah died. if ellie wasn't the way she was i genuinely think the story wouldn't be as gripping bc the best part of the game will always be the relationship between the two of them and their dynamic

I've never played the game, only watched the show, and I really can't comprehend the weird dislike and comments about Ellie. She's a 14 year old girl being silly in a world that has given her nothing. It's even weirder when it's 5 adult guys on a couch talking about her as if she's the most annoying person in the world. Strange vibes all around.

The thing with Elliie is she has no reason to trust Joel and Tess and on top of that she's a teenager that was born into this messed up world. The reason for her attitude is probably because she wanted to protect herself by putting up a shield. You'll come to love her character she goes through a lot of character development.

@@StudioGek I think the problem you're having is that you're not accustomed to realistically-written teenagers. You're used to stoic anime teenagers. Ellie is written to be realistic, not aspirational. Ellie is essentially a traumatized version of the average 14-year old.

As an Indonesian who loves The Last of Us and including the adaptation, lemme tell you about one of the my homelands food that is famous for celebrity chef to taste it like Gordon Ramsay and it was called rendang, it's a dish that were made by meat, coconut milk, chilli, ginger, galangal, turmeric, lemongrass, garlic and shallot with variation of chicken rendang, duck rendang, liver rendang and spleen rendang
If you dont like ellie now then you probably wont grow to like her, although she does get more character development throughout the episodes, her personality pretty much stays the same, snarky, sarcastic and a bit goofy and unserious at times, which is apparently what u guys dont like about her. Ill admit that this is the first time ive seen anyone not like ellie whether they played the game or not. Definitely a unique perspective.

I didn't know these actors (never watched Game of Thrones) and didn't play the game, although I had the notion it was about a dude and his child during the zombie apocalypse. So imagine my surprise when, after only 20 minutes or so in the first episode, they kill Sarah, who was a very lovable character, by the way.
I was, just like them, annoyed by Ellie (not her fault) and comparing her to Sarah. As the series advanced, I was liking Ellie a lot. She has a lot of brilliant moments by herself or with Joel, so I think it's possible to dislike her at the beginning and then growing to like her.
They must be religious or something. It’s weird how offended they get by her swearing.

Because the reason she's snappy is not "just because", it's because she's going through puberty in the middle of an apocalypse with no purpose in life, no hope for humanity and no role models. Sorry she's not a super-motivated titan who lives in a simplistic reality in which the world can be saved by a single individual. She's written to be realistic, not aspirational.

Like it’s easier to like her character for those who have played the game because they know her whole story, and so far we only know her how she is in these first two episodes. The fungi spread so fast to other countries because Jakarta is one of the main exporters of flour and grain so even if they bombed the city, the shipments of flour that were already delivered contained the cordyceps, so everyone who ate anything containing flour (cookies, pancakes, cake, etc) would get infected.
Ellie is the same in the game sarcastic and funny but she is a bit different in the show. You will love her in the next couple of episodes. I'm shocked ur the only people who doesn't like her in the start. She's 14 and a orphan so give her a break

The show is everything I was hoping for. The games are my favorite games of all time (even though I'm usually a fps multiplayer guy).
They nailed pretty much everything so far and made small changes to the story which are overall improvements to the games. The hive mind thing is for example not part of the games but Neil Druckman (creative director of the games and the show) even said that's a bummer he hadn't had this idea while writing the games.
I'm really looking forward to your guys reaction on epsiode three. I really liked that one.
You guys should absolutely check out Chernobyl if you want another HBO series that’s extremely stressful, but amazing to watch. I believe it’s a 5 episode mini series. Well worth the watch.

Haha totally get that, but here’s the difference for us. Eren acts similarly, but for way different reasons. He does it because he wants to save humanity and is sick of the lazy soldiers in his city not doing anything. Ellie does it just kinda to do it, but because she’s a product of her environment she grew up in. Which is fine and totally makes sense! We just don’t know why we SHOULD like her at this point. Idk if someone said. But the infection was in the flour. And the flour was shipped out to the rest of the world. Remember the neighbors were eating biscuits and baking cupcakes. That's how it initially started. People ate the bad flour which led to them getting and start biting people

Ellie's cursing was honestly partly meant to fit the personality of a 14yr old who didn't grow up in anything near a purity culture situation. But also it was used to add to the difference in personalities between her and Joel. In the game Joel says "Fuck" once and that's it. In the show Joel says it much more so that won't be a 1 to 1 transfer but basically that's why, they just decided that wasn't an aspect of Ellie's personality that they wanted to change and so we get it in the show.
And yes it is 100% on purpose that her and Sarah are almost the opposites in personality. To some extent you're reaction to Ellie is the intended effect. However I do think you are overlooking Joel's asshole tendencies. He doesn't take her seriously, he doesn't like her, doesn't care about her life, so why would she give him anything other than attitude? She doesn't want to be there either.

Ellie does play a 14 year old but in real life she is 19 so she just looks super young. plus in the game she cussed A LOT, it was just more spread out. She totally aces her personality from the game.
Heads up, pay attention to every conversations and scenes in this show, they will do a lot of callbacks and tie everything together...they also spread a lot of breadcrumbs that if you pay attention to them, they'd answer a lot of your questions about things in the show. 😁
The title isn't spoiling anything...the title is what those "zombies" are called... they're infected, not zombies because Zombies are dead, these things aren't dead, they're living humans who got infected.

I ported at Bali, Indonesia for about a week back in 2015 and it was amazing. About 20 bucks bought my group of friends a driver for the whole day, like he would just chill wherever we were and pick us up and take us wherever when we were done. The food was pretty bomb. For like 80 bucks a piece we booked a really nice hotel for 5 days which included dinners, dinner shows each night, and unlimited drinks from the pool bar. It's not a great idea to tell marines they can have unlimited drinks...

If you want some info, that zombie is a type of evulotion from the fungus growing over the years. Making their other senses hightend now that they can't see, so they use sound like the clicking noise to no where they are (echolocation) That why they are called clickers cause of the clicking noise they make!

watching this is tough being such a hard advocate for appreciating the 1:1 the show brings from playing the game, BUT I absolutely love seeing from another perspective about the show with a blind eye. The twists and stuff they decide to expand on from the game makes it enjoyable for all audiences so stoked to see you guys finish this series.

@@corneliusthewise it’s kind of an unnecessary episode tbh. The main characters in present time did not really interact with either of them. They just came by and got what they needed and moved forward. I think the dislike for it is justified because it seemed like it was just there to signal inclusiveness rather than push the story forward.
Spoilers: If Bill is still alive somehow (they never showed the bodies), I take every word that I stated here back. The episode just have to have meaning to the overall narrative of the story for me.

I didn’t know that but I had a feeling. That would definitely explain the response to Ellie swearing so much. I’ve had some LDS friends they remind me of. I am also curious how they’ll react to certain characters and scenes.
If they happen to read this comment, for what it’s worth, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with feeling uncomfortable watching the intimacy scenes. I know some queer people who aren’t religious who didn’t like watching that, but really liked the story otherwise.

As someone who adores this game the practical effects, sound design, and the movement for the infected are amazing. I'm glad they chose to tone down on the CGI. Solid episode. 🔥

All in all, it's a react channel and they're just doing another show that they enjoy. What's wrong with that? If you're not interested, for this instance in HBO's The Last of Us, just don't watch it then. And the schedule is already mentioned, weekends is The Last of Us.
The fungi was in the food. in the beginning they mention jakarta which is where most of the worlds flour comes from. In the game it said the food was contaminated and that's why everyone got infected. Throughout this episode they don't have pancake mix, they refuse the biscuits, sarah doesn't eat the cookies and they didn't get the cake which in the end saved them.

I don't like Ellie's snarkiness either, but she's clearly way more competent at survival than Sarah. I'm sorry but when Sarah ignored the national emergency broadcast on TV, went into the neighbor's house and kept proceeding when she stepped on a pool of blood, I was just like I can't root for a MC like this. She's good as the backstory, but I'm glad she's not the MC.
Funnily enough, Sarah in the game did no such thing and was in the house until Joel came back 😅
That’s a good point with Sarah being pretty oblivious to the obvious danger. Ironically not an issue in the game. The differences are interesting, but I definitely like the game versions of Sarah, Joel, and Ellie more.
In the game Sarah didn’t just fix his own watch with his own money, she bought him a new one with her own money, while being younger too. In the show Sarah is holding her single father together, while in the game Joel is an especially young single father who is doing everything he can for her and she recognizes that. Game Joel and Ellie also just aren’t this mean to each other, they just don’t want to be around each other. Notably, Ellie is only rude to Joel when he’s rude first, and Joel would never physically harm Ellie (which is their first interaction in the show).

In response to the discussion about the condition of the city: there's some interesting documentaries about how quickly things would turn to ruins in the absence of care and maintenance. Water and wind damage create footholds for plant life; structural integrity is weakened by all three; nature takes back over. You can see it in abandoned towns in real life (Centralia is an good example).
also the after credits have shorts with the directors of the show and the creator of the game going over the episode production and its themes. reacting to those would be cool

A lot of ‘The Last of Us’ was shot in Alberta. You can see plenty of scenes from Calgary, Edmonton, Fort MacCleod, and High River!
I believe the shot at 9:10 was the 4th Ave Flyover in Calgary, the museum scene was shot at Calgary’s First Street Sw, the State House in ‘Boston’ that they were going to meet the Fireflies at was the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton, and many more.
The first episode had a lot of scenes done in Fort Macleod and High River (Pre-Apocalypse Texas) with some scenes shot in Calgary to (Boston QZ).
Idk what made u think it’s fair to compare Sarah & Ellie. Sarah was born & raised pre-pandemic. She was loved by Joel, Tommy, and even her neighbors. She knew what it was like to be loved and cared for. Ellie was born and raised during the pandemic. She’s an orphan that was raised by terrible people. She never knew love. She’s seen as an object. I’m not saying you HAVE to like her but at least try to understand her. Not fair at all imo🤷🏼♀️
And it's not really a fair comparison, like at all, to compare Ellie to Sarah in the first place lol. They both grew up completely different and experienced different things. The same for comparing Joel's relationship with Sarah's to his relationship with Ellie. It's different, because for one, Sarah was his child and of course he wouldn't treat Ellie the same way he treated his own daughter lol.
While you are right about varying circumstances and objective comparisons, the story definitely *wants* you to compare them, as that’s the main thing on Joel’s mind with Ellie.
Plus regardless everyone’s different, you can’t expect two teenage girls to be the same anyway both Sarah and Ellie are great
most of this episode was shot in Edmonton, Alberta. It was pretty cool because alot of downtown was shut down during shooting. Most of the show was filmed in canada.

To all these goofy little commentors crying about their AOT reactions, it's a reaction channel stupid, they're not bound to ONE content to react to, obviously they'll eventually start other shows and movies possibly, quit y'all whining, TLOU is just as a masterpiece as AOT.
Glad you guys are enjoying the show. There are so many zombie type movies and TV shows and the list just keeps growing, but to be honest, I've never grown tired of them. As long as the genre doesn't become stale and/or repetitive, then I'll continue to watch them. You can add LoU to the list, which has taken a different spin on the genre with cordyceps taking over the world. Beyond the last remnants of civilization trying to survive, is the relationship between Joel and Ellie which I've very much looking forward to how well (or poorly) the TV show can portray that.
Having played the game though, it's a different viewing experience. It's actually quite interesting to see how other people--those who have or haven't played the game--respond to the show because it's one of the best stories ever in a video game.
I will also add that I've never heard you guys talk so much during a show. It's different when you're watching something in English versus having to read the subtitles. In a way, it's a good thing because AoT demands your attention.
