Joel is having panic attacks. Because Ellie matters to him that also means he can lose her, like he lost his daughter. While Joel is mad at Tommy, it's more than searching for him and he turned out to be fine. Tommy's got a partner with a child on the way. He gained something after the world changed. Joel lost everything when it began. That's why he has those nightmares, he's terrified he's going to fail Ellie and it'll cost her life.

Joel is acting up because he's scared of getting further attached to Ellie and then end up losing another daughter, which is also why he kept getting those anxiety attacks, as the whole thing kept triggering his PTSD, which is why he closed himself off to everyone for the past 20 years.

To be fair I am so insanely obsessed with Bella Ramsey and Ellie and I couldn’t stand them the first few episodes. To the point where I would wait weeks in between them. Even though it was so good Ellie just put me off that much. Probably for the best because at this point I was incredibly intrigued by Ellie and I had a few episodes to binge. And once I got to esp 7 I was full on absolutely starstuck and beyond shocked. By esp 8 I had a complete 360 to where I was at. Bella Ramsey even said they were surprised people were liking Ellie at the beginning. They expected people to hate Ellie. I think Ellie is written so incredibly realistically. And in this kind of world we begin to crave the innocence and hope and strength kids can have in hard times.
