    I once heard that the game developers polled a group of people to see if they thought what Joel did was right or wrong at the end. A lot of them were pretty half and half, but all the people that they polled who were parents, they all agreed that he did the right thing saving his baby girl over the world. It really puts into perspective the love of a parent for their child and the lengths they would go to for them.

      Yes, I agree. And as a GP myself, I really think that there are so many medical procedures that can be done in this situation. Why don't the Fireflies make a truce with the government who may have a better medical team and equipments to perform the medical procedures. At least keep Ellie alive until she can give birth to a child and see if the immunity can be passed down genetically to the next generation. And learn from that process. Don't just jump hastily with such a low possibility of success and kill the only immune person in this whole world... And even if they magically can get a cure from the operation, I think The Fireflies will use it as a power to win people and bring down FEDRA just like Catherine's group did. Or even worse, imagine if the cure was given to people such as David... It will make the whole world much worse than hell...

      @@vladimirvanvhorno357 the government has become a fascist dictatorship, a truce is impossible. You are assuming they'll have better facilities and medical teams than the Fireflies, not necessarily. I do agree that the Fireflies would use it as leverage and not necessarily for the benefit of mankind but probably better in their hands than the govt that exists. Separate groups like Tommy's community finding the cure would be ideal.
      I don't blame them for wanting to find a cure asap, you're not gonna wait around for this disease to kill off everyone though I agree you'd wanna preserve an immune person as much as possible. Although you can technically create many immune people by having pregnant women get infected right before birth but that's obviously not ideal.
      Discussion of which people to give it to is dangerous and relates back to the Fireflies using the cure for power. Who gets to decide who gets a cure? Everyone should get one, period.

    @randomfangirl2503 11 місяців тому +36

    there are so many reasons why the fireflies were ididotic in trying to kill Ellie and the idea that they could hope for a cure was unrealistic. I saw a comment once that explained it very well and I saved it and it went like this:
    " His personal feelings for Ellie aside, Joel was absolutely in the right to stop the surgery. There is so much wrong with the way the fireflies handled Ellie both medically and ethically.
    From a medical standpoint they went straight for terminal neurosurgery after having her in a lab for like, a day? No additional long term tests run? No long term bloodwork? Stress tests to see how her body handles the theoretically symbiotic fungi? Long term tests or observations to see how her body may change over time having this fungus? That's not even counting the fact that she’s the only known carrier of this immunity-granting fungus, so if anything goes wrong with the extraction of the fungus from ellie that's it. No time to try to find another solution, just head to life ending surgery immediately.
    The development of this vaccine would have been groundbreaking even in the modern world pre-cordyceps, yet they give it a fraction of the time and consideration, and with a sliver of the research and development resources that would have been available before the outbreak. It was a long shot even under the best of circumstances.
    Also there is the consideration that the story of The Last of Us occurs roughly 20 years after outbreak day, and the attending surgeon for Ellie’s surgery looks to be in his 40’s, if we’re being generous, which would likely have made him around 20-25 around the outbreak. This would have put him as being a med student or resident at best once the world ended, not a neurosurgeon with years of experience. How qualified is this guy really to even perform this surgery in the first place? Or even recommend that performing a terminal surgery is the only way to extract those cells from Ellie? Or guarantee they’d be able to take those cells and successfully reproduce them in a lab with minimal staff and resources as well as the lack of ability to even sterilize environments properly because it is the POST APOCALYPSE. Do they have all the relevant specialists to develop this treatment? One neurosurgeon is not going to be able to accurately and safely perform this literal MIRACLE on his own, not without a massive amount of help and resources that the Fireflies almost certainly do not have access to.
    Then even assuming that the cure was somehow made and worked perfectly, how do you have anywhere near the logistics possible to produce a vaccine/treatment on a mass scale and distribute it to quote “everyone”? That's all the materials required to safely store, transport, and administer this vaccine to all the people in all different geographic situations in at the very least, the continental US. This would be impossible unless the world had returned to some state industrialization, which it is clear by the end of The Last of Us that it has not. This would all even be assuming the treatment interacts with all people properly and is always administered correctly. AND assuming that the cordyceps doesn’t adapt and overcome the treatment once it has been used in a massive population. That's way too many assumptions and “if’s” to be able to justify choosing to immediately end Ellie’s life.
    And THEN there's the complete lack of moral/ethical considerations. Not only was Ellie never offered the chance to give informed consent to this life ending procedure, and was purposefully kept unconscious the whole time, even if she was awake and fully lucid she’s likely not even able to give informed consent at the time. Not only is she a minor, but at the time in the story she’s clearly displaying strong symptoms of PTSD, possibly depression, potentially has survivor’s guilt, and she could be prone to making reckless, self-distructive, or even suicidal decisions because of it. Even if Ellie said “yes, please kill me with this surgery for the vaccine” there’s no way to guarantee she is capable of fully coming to that conclusion in a completely informed and rational way on her own. Not to mention the fact that the fireflies would have been pressuring the hell out of her to go through with it. And if Ellie said no, they almost certainly would have forced her to go through with it anyway. Like Marline had even said, the fireflies made it seem as though there was no other choice, when there absolutely was.
    Joel was absolutely right to step in and stop an incompetent group of wannabe saviors from rushing to recklessly and needlessly kill Ellie. "
    then i would also like to add that they kept talking about a vaccine and let me tell ya vaccines are only effective against viruses. Viruses and fungi behave compleatly differently and vaccines are only for viruses. for fungal infections you would need anti-fungal medicine depending of what fungus is causing the infection. but vaccines are not an affective agent against fungi. so the fact that marline, who has had a bunch of conversations with the dude who claims to be a doctor about how to make this, kept using the term vaccine shows that the doctor didnt know what he was talking about considering he never corrected her on that.
    alos fun fact there is another kind of cordyceps (not the zombie one) that is acctually used in todays world as an anti fungal medicine for some infections.
    but anyway, to anyone that acctually read this, have a wonderful day and i wish you the best :)

    • @Baker_Lyn
      @Baker_Lyn 11 місяців тому

      Additionally, assuming they were able to develop a vaccine/anti fungal, what is the likelihood the Fireflies would actually give it to everyone for free. More likely, they would only provide it to those who agreed with their beliefs/methods or in exchange for something they wanted.
      Furthermore, resent history has proven that not everyone would trust the safety/validity of the vaccine, so it would not be able to “save the world”.

    @20:45, this actually happened - Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. They were stuck in the snowy Andes mountains and no one knew where they were. The chance of rescue was slim and getting slimmer every day. After (I think) the first week, they knew that rescue isn't on the table anymore, the mindset from the outside world had shifted to retrieval. They realized if they have to survive, they had to do something drastic. In a 40-passenger vessel, 16 people survived and they endured 72 days in that snowy mountain with nothing to eat except their dead. They were rescued because two of the survivors (initially three but one got injured and returned to their camp) trekked down the mountain and found help for the rest of them.

    41:34 Exactly, Joel wakes up and they just tell him she's gonna die, nothing about potential testing they could do or did, just straight up "yeah she needs to die for this", no choice, no discussion. Also how sure are we that the surgeons are competent enough to do this? There haven't been any hospitals or medical schools for YEARS so what are the odds they have a doctor who could do this? Sure there's an argument to make towards the "Any chance at all would be worth it so save humanity" argument, but from Joel's point of view it's losing his "daughter" again for a humanity that is anything but worthy: raiders, rapists, cannibals, greedy selfish people, that's not worth it to him, especially with no guarantee that it would work.
    Also.... what if cordyceps mutates again?

      To be fair I think you’re putting too much blame on Joel. Even if the cure would have worked (which I doubt it would have since the first 2 episodes flashbacks reiterate there is no cure for this infection) it doesn’t matter because it’s never okay to kill children. Even if Ellie consented, she’s a 14 year old who went through the most traumatic thing a person could go through. She’s not in the right mindset to decide if she should live or die.
      Marlene could have easily waited until Ellie was older, or even waited for Ellie and Joel to talk about the procedure, but she didn’t. She didn’t because she knew there was a possibility Ellie would choose to live. She knew that what she was doing was morally reprehensible.
      All in all what I’m trying to say is that Joel didn’t take away her choice - he gave her the opportunity to make choices by saving her from someone who WAS going to take away her choice.

    Somebody did a poll asking parents what they would do in Joel's place and 100% of them said they would've done the same thing. And if Marlene and Joel had waited for Ellie to wake up and asked her what she wanted to do, I believe that she would have said yes to the surgery. And, Marlene may have kept her promise to Ellie's mom to watch over her, but it doesn't appear that she had any kind interaction with her or formed any kind of bond.. She didn't see Ellie as her child so she was willing to sacrifice her for the possibility of a cure. But if Anna had survived there's no way she would have let Marlene or anyone else use Ellie if it meant she would have to give up her life.

Even some vegetables such as grilled portobello mushroom, may be called mushroom steak. In comparison, venison used to be attributed to most game animals but has been primarily used for deer meat. For some meats, such as pork, lamb and mutton, chevon, and veal, these cuts are often referred to as chops.

    Hello, I was a lurker from the first episode of this series and now - a subscriber 🎉 I don’t really watch anime but I stuck with it because you guys have awesome and great reactions! Loved seeing your own character developments and seeing how you grew fond of Ellie. The beautiful thing about this game and story is the inner moral dilemmas one experiences and it showed so perfectly in your guys discussion, there is no right or wrong but each person wants to justify a reason why it’s right she die and wrong for it. Loved seeing both sides from you guys and going further on it. If you guys have time, give the game a chance, it’s amazing! As for Part II, it is a such a controversial topic because of the moral dilemma. Neil Druckmann has such an interesting way of writing morality and the conflicts of it, how far you’re willing to go for live and revenged, closure, and just life - that was one of the main reasons why it was controversial. I’m going to lean off spoiling but the story itself is such a beautiful and conflicting story, just as the first game was, it makes the player feel all sorts of things and emotions; sadness, fear, anxiety, thrill, emptiness, loneliness, and just a jumble - your emotions are everywhere. The story is one of the best and whatever everyone says - the story is written beautifully. It IS a masterpiece because it cause that divide and those that don’t see it have a right to that feeling too, like I said, there’s no right or wrong - just a gray ness. Again, if you guys have time do give it a chance! You will not regret ever playing it, seriously. It’s one that makes you think forever and keep a story in your mind and heart. It is one of the BEST video games ever. Can’t wait to see you guys react to season 2 when it comes out and see who’s theories come true or not 🫣 Totally stocked you guys are stocked for it!

    It's been hinted through the series: The Fireflies actually suck and are kinda incompetent, stupid grunts. The way they attack Joel and Ellie... (it's even worse in the game). They were losing in Boston, didn't get anywhere in 20 years. And Marlene was the worst, making stupid mistakes over and over again. Not telling Ellie, not letting her and Joel be part of any decision, and given that she didn't, letting Joel go with just two (incompetent) grunts escorting him. (Just one in the game.) Just hopeless.

Plus the hospital and Marlene didn't even let Ellie know she's gonna die after the surgery. The fact that she's the only one immune in the whole world and they haven't done anything like that before is quite dangerous. There's no guarantee it will work. In terms of Joel being right or wrong, I think some people overlook that Ellie also saved his life twice. Maybe it isn’t his primary motivation but if any of us was in his shoes, you’d definitely take that into consideration. Forget about the whole daughter thing. How far would you go to save someone who prevented your death twice?
    Also, the scene with Ellie’s mother lets Joel off the hook even more than the game implies. It is obvious now that there can be more immune people knowing what happened to Ellie as a baby can be repeated.
    I don’t know if this comes into play in the 2nd game but I think it just strengthens the pro-Joel argument even more. His real mistake then is killing the idiotic doctor with a scapel. Which in the heat of the moment is understandable based on his reaction to Joel in the room.
    Now all the debate really is about is Joel lying to Ellie and why the Fireflies act without any thought of their own livelihood.
