  • You’ve been asking and we’ve been wondering when Ibis would finally make an ebike. Well, the wait is over-Ibis just launched the Oso today. It’s a big, burly, brawler of an ebike. So, how did they do their first time out? Stick around to find out.

    I ride an XL Santa Cruz Hightower and got an Ibis OSO in size XL. I am 6'-3" and 210 lb and on paper I though that the OSO in XL would be too big but I dont know how but it felt just as large as my Hightower or maybe even smaller? This OSO handles like a smaller bike when you want it to but has the stability of a bigger bike. It is just crazy. Love it. Paid $8k and for the price its just a great buy.

    I was really hoping their first would be a “lightweight” e-bike but I have seen pretty good arguments for the contrary too. Definitely not a fan of all the farkles and the extra wiring though. Couldn’t help but notice that the charge port looks to be down by the cranks right in the danger zone for mud, water and impacts. Saw BKXC fiddling with it after impacts during his little puff piece.

    interesting choice on sizing. Seems like they just skipped the large size entirely. medium is the same as the ripmo, and then L is the same as rimpo XL. Strange to just skip the most popular size entirely and call the xl a large.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  Рік тому

      Kind of. You also have to keep in mind that reach isn't the only contributing factor to how big a bike feels. Stack height and seat tube angle will have a big effect on the seated position. Comparing larges for example, the Oso has a steeper seat tube angle which is going to move you closer to the handlebars putting you probably pretty close to the seated position on a large Ripmo. On the descents you'll get the benefit of the longer reach and wheelbase as this bike is intended to ride bigger and more stable than a Ripmo.

      I haven’t weighed either of them but there’s no way the RM stuff is lighter than the Oso. Those are some of the heavier ebikes I’ve ridden. As for the lively feel, suspension design is a huge contributor to how poppy a bike feels not just geo.

    • @bikersedge

      At first the sizing was a little weird to me. Now it’s strung to make more sense. With such a steep seat tube the reach is going to feel shorter in the seated position. Also it has a really low standover which allows for more flexibility when trying to pick a size.

    as awesome as this bike seems, i cannot and will NOT ever be able to justify spending 11 THOUSAND dollars on a carbon ebike that comes with fucking sram GX drivetrain and fox performance suspension. it is REALLY getting out of hand just how expensive bikes are getting. I don't care how much R&D went in to making this bike. nothing justifies that price in my opinion. I am extremely lucky to have gotten some great discounts because I worked in a bike shop for a while but even then, I spent far too much money on my bike and now that I don't work in a bike shop anymore, I am just unwilling to buy anything bike related other than new tires once or twice a year. if you want a new bike, go get a job at a bike shop for a few months, get your pro-deals and then quit. companies quite literally will give you a 45% or more discount on bikes and still make a solid profit.

The actual angle isn't a great measurement without knowing the effective angle as a seat tube can start well in front or behind the bottom bracket. Giving the actual at the measured saddle height is the best way to measure STA.

      A slack actual angle means nothing without comparing its relative relation to the bottom bracket. That's why an effective angle at a given saddle height is the best measurement. Yes, the actual angle on this seat tube is slack, but its relation to the bottom bracket at what I'd consider a pretty high saddle height for a large frame, is plenty steep. Not even close to feeling slack. I'm sensitive to slack STAs because I have giraffe legs, and I had zero issues with this STA.
