    One of the best category breakdowns I've seen! I like that you touched on skills > trails = underbike, trails > skills = overbike. Jumping up a category can save the bacon in those oh shift moments. If you're overskilled for the trails, jumping down can bring some more fun.

    My 2018 first aluminum version of the Norco Optic A9.2 with 120/110 mm of travel is an excellent cross-country bike with modern geometry for the flat terrain of Central Russia region. It is ideal for long hours of forest riding, on trails with many roots, as well as on more difficult and fun lines in ravines, and is great for blue trails. It climbs and descends very well in the terrain I ride. The Norco Optic short-travel trail bike, blurring the lines between cross-country and trail categories (you can call this border category down-country), is a great everyday bike, as well as a good solution for learning the basics and techniques of mountain biking, has proven itself well on short gaps, small jumps and drops. It all depends on the terrain you are riding on. We have no mountains unfortunately here, to the nearest mountain you need to drive more than 2,000 km. If your technical trails have a steep rocky incline, then you need an all-mountain or enduro bike. If your flow trails have a small incline and a lot of roots, then you need a trail or down country bike. Personally, I replaced my XC hardtail with a Norco Optic, it became much more comfortable and interesting for me to ride on hills, fields, ravines, blue lines. And for mountain trips I have an aggressive mid travel trail bike. Trail and all-mountain bikes are the best options for amateur riders. Cross-country, enduro and downhill are disciplines for professional athletes. But this is all conditional, since the boundaries are blurring. Ultimately, the most important thing is technique and riding skills. Have a good ride and have a good day!

    This is excellent. With so many videos, the riders have an obvious bias (usually downhill) and gloss over the trade-offs...but this one's fair. You describe what being 'under-biked' and 'over-biked' feels like accurately too.

    I have a 2020 Stumpjumper evo that I have stroked up to 160/160. I run it in high so it has a 64.5 HA, placing it solidly in the heavy duty all mountain bike category. I put some I9 Enduro 305s on it to lighten it up a bit for my local trails but It can still smash pretty damn well for where I live (MD).

    my Kona Process 134 CR/Dl never ceases to amaze - its fun everywhere. My only comment is for many trails outside of big country riding (outside the USA, Canada or Alpine settings) I think up to trail is all you need.
    How many time people overbike (enduro on XC) and really dont get the most out of the MTB experience.

    I found for me an enduro bike, witch is excellent for biking in the Alps or in Finale on vacation, but sometimes a little too much on my local trails, combined with an Enduro Hardtail is perfect. The Hardtail is a ton of fun, not much slower than my full suspension, but a lot more physical and technique demanding. It helped to improve my strength and technique witch transalted perfectly to better biking on my Fullsuspension Enduro.

    Very, very well done video. I’m a trail-bike guy for 90% of what I ride. I still have fun on the Black at our local mountain (although our blacks are sort of purple), but admittedly I’m a bit under biked there. I also have fun at Moab, but I’m a little beat up after WE (though still smiling). I won’t be taking my 5010 on Ahab again though, period.
    I have a new Hightower for longer, bigger days, but it remains to be seen how much I’ll enjoy it on my daily climb-descend-twisty flow rides with small poppy features.
    I think the best advice is for someone to think about what they ride 80% of the time, and get the bike that suits that style best. It seems most bikes can flex up or down a category and still be fun.

    I really appreciated the information that you provided here. I started mountain biking in the late 90s, took a break when my older kids were little and then figured out how to ride with the kids and started back on an XC hardtail. Made a huge jump from an Orbea Alma to a Juliana Roubion so all mountain MX 🤷‍♀️. I love it on the downhills and the tech and it climbs okay but I miss the fast climbing plus it sucks to climb with my three year old on my bike with me (love the MacRide despite the hard work required 😆). I think I need to add another bike and I am wondering if I want to go with the Transition Spur or a Juliana Wilder TR because those would be fun on our big climbs on the green trails I am riding with my seven and ten year old and I could race those on the local circuit. I really appreciated your video featuring the Transition Spur because it really helped me narrow down my list.

    Thanks for the video. Seen also others and tests in the past ...
    Two things that seems no one is talking about in all those videos:
    a) is a starting level All Mountian Bike (140-150mm) better than a Trail bike (120-130mm) with high end components, p.e. in a descent?
    b) It is common to say that some of these bikes do not climb the same even if many Trail and All mountain bikes have the same geometry upfront.
    So the question is: Can you have a stiffer (more presssure) 150mm front / locked in order to achieve (simulate almost a 130mm) a better climbing like a trail bike and having less pressure a day you focus on a rock garden downhill in order to be better that a trail bike?
    I have notice that sometimes on a fire road with a bit of anomalies, a trail bike with 130mm high pressure and closed suspesion can climb faster than a hardtail. But sure we are talking about seconds of "superiority" per 200m
    c) lastL: what about All mountain bikes with variable geometry?

    This is probably the best break down I've seen of the categories, but in my experience it's all relative to skill and fitness levels. I take issue with the sentiment that someone would "need to have" a bike on either end of the spectrum, if you have to buy an xc bike to climb quickly and efficiently you probably need to work on your fitness, on the other hand if you "need to have" an enduro bike to descend quickly, you probably just need to work on your bike handling skills. I've learned this through experience and will happily be shopping in the trail and all mountain category from now on.

    14:00 - This was me. I was convinced I wanted something like a Trek Slash or a SC Nomad... right up until I test rode one. I'm a 37yo dad getting back into the sport. To use one of those like it *wants* to be ridden was beyond what I wanted to do on a daily basis. Test riding an enduro bike convinced me I wanted a trail bike. Also, my wife rides a XC bike. If you have the chance to test ride a bike, take it where you will ride *and* with the person or people you will ride with. That will test how much fun you'll really have on your new bike.

    Your category choices are excellent but sometimes bike manufacturers' don't fall within those parameters. Here's a great example of the bike I own: The Pivot Switchblade. If you look at Pivot's website, they have it classified as an Enduro bike but it only has 142mm of rear travel. That's a far cry from your Enduro definition of a bike having 160mm of rear travel.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  3 роки тому

      @@bikersedge thank you for the reply.
      I am trying to decide between the Santa Cruz Tallboy and Santa Cruz Hightower. A lot of reviews say these two are a bike they would choose if they could only have one bike as they do everything decently well. Do you feel this is true and if so which one would you pick?

      @bikersedge  2 роки тому

      @@MrJkillahoe415 I think trail bikes and all mountain bikes are the most versatile bikes. They’re both great “one bike” options. The Tallboy will suit someone who likes to climb and rides flowy trails and the Hightower will suit a more aggressive descender.

      Depends on the trail network. They’re becoming more and more accepted though.

    Unless you race (XC, Enduro, Downhill), you probably don't want to buy a "race" specific bike. And, that leaves only two types of bikes. That would be the Downcountry bike like the Transition Spur and the All-Mountain bike like the Ibis Ripmo. The Downcountry bike would be light weight and have a 120mm fork and 100-120mm rear travel. The All-mountain bike would be more stout and have a 160mm fork and 137-150mm rear travel. Interestingly, both bikes would have similar geo--- ~76* STA, ~66-65* HTA. To me, buying anything in between in the Trailbike category like the Trek Fuel EX is a fail. It's not light-weight nor does it have much travel. Either go light-weight and accept less travel. Or, get significant travel and accept more weight.

      this does not make a lot of sense - everything scales: trail bikes have more travel than Downcountry, but are lighter than All-Mountain
      after reading your comment, you make it seem like trail bikes are as heavy as 150mm travel bike - this is not true
