California needs to follow this example, this stealing and taking things off of people’s porches shouldn’t be a normal occurrence. Squatters shouldn’t be able to take over someone’s property. This is common sense.

Squatter’s right used to make sense. People would abandon their property so it’s free. Now every house is owned by somebody and or is given to someone next to kin. The law is from Britain 1400s. Than the settlers came with it. Basically for people to claim land and build homes without needing to buy land. So it had its time and place. Settlers is just a nice way of saying squatters. But basically all land is owned. Just doesn’t really makes sense now.

CA problems and Florida problems are different. Wealth disparity is IMO the biggest problem in CA leading to crime. Everything in CA is more expensive because CA makes a lot of money. People just trying to get by have a harder time in CA than in Florida and more people resort to crime. Trying to use laws to solve every problem leads to jails overflowing. I am not saying that CA should go easy on crime, I am saying it is not as easy as saying we are just going to be harder legally on crime. Higher fines and more jail time just make the desperate people more desperate and means more tax money needs to be spent taking care of them while in jail. As Florida becomes more prosperous which they clearly are, congrats to them, I wonder how they are going to deal with the problems of wealth disparity and overcrowding jails.

Common sense is making the punishment fit the crime. And I support that. If you break the law you should be held accountable. This isn’t about accountability. To the best of my knowledge this law doesn’t change what is defined as theft. All it does is make people go to jail longer and pay bigger fines. For example stealing a $40 item now makes you a felon. If that is what you think fits the crime, then cool. I personally don’t think so. Also if common sense is your thing why does he cite California crime stats, and also say Florida theft is going down, to justify this law? There’s no common sense connection there.

While I agree shoplifting is a problem, the real root of the issue is that companies jack up prices to the point where they're unaffordable, blame theft for the increase in prices, all while recording record revenue and profit. The root of the issue here is bad government leading to people needing to steal to survive.
