Statistically and historically when there are penalties that expedite as your criminal activity expedite it has a direct effect on the crime rate of the community. Crime rates go down. You are right though just something being illegal, doesn’t necessarily keep people from doing it if there’s no real consequences. There are consequences.

We caught our postman stealing packages in my neighborhood. He was using a tiny scope to pierce packages and see the contents. l saw my package of an expensive guitar pedal was 'out for delivery' and then tracking said delivered but l watched the mailman walk by. l called my post office and they sent someone immediately to stop and search his truck and he had my package and another one he had marked as delivered. They then found his scope.

Florida is paving the way to laws that should have been established nation wide a long time ago. From squatting laws to package and retail theft laws.

I’ve seen a few people make this comment. You do understand that they are not suddenly making thievery illegal. You don’t seem to understand that that’s not what’s happening here. They’re actually attaching penalties and real consequences to the act of thievery. Just because something illegal doesn’t mean people aren’t going to do it, especially if there are no real consequences. Turning a $40 theft into a felony that will send you to prison is a deterrent. Petty theft and shoplifting is out of control because there’s no real consequences. That’s what’s happening here. It’s really not hard to understand.
The threshold has been reduced for penalties and those penalties are higher. The improvements will allow more thieves to spend time in jail and will thus reduce the amount of people willing to take the risk.
It is like your parents saying “If you don’t do your homework you don’t get a donut” vs “if you don’t do your homework we are going to take away all your phone, computer, tablet and game system for a week.”
This rule should be all over the State 🇱🇷

Can you now be charged with a crime for walking into a police department to file a complaint, in Florida, against a Cop? Can you legally walk into a police department at all?
Do cops have a right to feel safe and secure in their person? No. The government does not have that right. How about the equal protection clause? If a cop can feel threatened if I am within 25 feet of him then they opposite should apply as well. No cop should be allowed to stand within 25 feet of me because I now feel threatened by a man with a gun and clubs (COPS). I have a 4th amendment right to feel safe and secure in my person and these cops have shown my that my life is in danger if they are within 25 feet of me.
So it is not citizens who need to stay 25 feet away from cops but cops that need to stay 25 feet away from citizens unless conducting an investigation.
I wish I could show my Ring App homepage while in CO. Porch pirates, catalytic converters and grand theft auto are normalized there. And if you pull a gun or self defend yourself….YOU go to jail, not the criminal. that why I left. Had enough.

Why the hell was this law passed?! We need less laws, not more laws. This just give the world's largest crime syndicate more opportunity to selective enforce, twist and misinterpret, and do whatever the hell it wants to whomever it wants. Stealing is already (supposed to be) illegal!
