Most PS4 consoles don't overheat, but they do get hot and they feel hot. Many people think a hot console is overheating, but that's usually not the case. When they overheat they will beep 3 times, show an overheating error on the TV screen, show a red light on the power button, then turn themselves off.

TronicsFix I have a question: my ps4 slim got really loud a while ago (im in a basement and i could hear it from the second floor) and i assumed it was just dust so i opened it up to clean it out but there was no dust, dirt or hair whatsoever so i decided to change the thermal paste, my ps4 slim is still loud and getting louder by the day even though i do high maintenence to keep it clean and its in a very wide open spot, could you please give me a guess as to why it may be getting so loud? i fear it may die out soon

Great video. Just re-pasted my Slim thanks to another one of your videos. Besides the horrendous paste job from the factory, my slim is also a dust vacuum, I couldn’t believe how much dust had accumulated.
Thanks so much for this video. We were able to 'half fix' our PS4. Now it is making a lot of fan noise. I cleaned the fan and blew out the heat source, still making some noise. We are getting an error code too. It was a good project, but honestly, I do not have a lot of time to do this. Thanks so much.

You're a good man for this stuff and answering replies. Coming from a elite xb1 its kinda scary feeling how hot my new/used ps4 slim gets. It may be normal but I won't be using it for anything other than gaming because it makes me paranoid. So happy to own both now, sigh, my work on earth is finished🙏

Something I have experienced on multiple PS4 Pro systems I have modded is the heat and fan noise generation is largely related to the GDDR5 on the backside of the motherboard due to grossly inadequate cooling (the PWM of the fan is definitely tied to the memory in addition to the APU), I wouldn't be surprised if this affects the PS4 Slim as well--could be an idea for a future video if nothing else.

it's a shame that the PS4 slim isn't as reliable as the ps2 or the ps3 slim..
my brother has the PS4 slim which runs hotter than my fat ps4
Dukes the reason the ps4 slim feels hotter is because its very compact therfore heat can penetrate much more effectivly, the reason the OG ps4 seems less hot is because most of that heat is on the bottom due to fan placment and it has more room for air to pass by and since air is terrible at transfering heat you wont feel it as much on the OG plastic body unlike the slim where as i said before everything is compact and tightly placed together
I wouldn't say it's not as reliable...Slims seem to be just as reliable if not more than previous models based on the # of repairs we get in. Time will tell though.
Dukes slim and pro have better wifi at 5.0ghz compared to the original ps4s wifi at 2.4 ghz speed

Got my slim Ps4 5 days ago.After 7 hour family play with 3 pauses, the playstation freeze when i look in store at games.When i check it out it was very hot....I must reconect all cables to make it work again :(

Another thing could be if the metal casing above the fan is stopping the fan from spinning because it was press down into the fan. I guess from the previous owner dropping it or having something heavy on top.

Same played some mk11 and bumped in my tv the cord disconnected and I put in front of my fan and I hope it works.

Maybe clean your fan and heat sink. If it's clogged with dust cold air won't help. Luckily they designed this console to be easy to clean.

@@Tronicsfix I've only taken off the 1st metal case and dusted out the fan and the top of the heat sink, I didnt take off the heat sink or motherboard. How do you know when it is time to replace the thermal paste?

One of the first accessories I buy when I buy a new console is an external cooling fan(s). Also, vacuuming out the dust from the intake and where the hot air blows out is obviously nessasary if you maximum air flow. Game hard or don't game at all.
I'm thinking about testing some cooling fans to see if they help keep it cool or not.

I got mine 3 days ago and it only gets a little hot in the top right corner but I keep it really clean and when im done playing I let it cool off and then cover it with a cloth so dust won't get on it

I bought a laptop cooler for my ps4 for a longer life span. Also if temps get high, the ps4 cooler speed will rise witch results in more dust intake.

Does running the slim without the top cover help with cooling?
I'm going to guess no since the airflow would seem to improve with the cover on.
I know this is 7 months later but it would help airflow by opening up the hot plate to open air and allow it access to more air. Same with the fan, allowing the fan unrestricted air flow will help it cool by allowing fresh air in instead of blowing already warm air into the system
I have my PS4 Slim for exact 2 Months and until the first day it's getting really warm... i refer would say "hot"... especially at the top right corner and bottom in the back were the power supply is... but no matter if you play 2 or 6 hours, the temperature remains the same... and it's running really well without any problems.
Also if you see movies about the browser, the Slim gets really warm... no matter what you do, it's every time the same temperature.
They get hot...thats normal.
TronicsFix so what's a normal temperature reading? Anything at and below 65 degrees Celsius, correct?

my slim does not overheat as well
it does not overheat but does feels as if it will kill itself if it continues in that heat range, im sure, one can cook an over easy egg on a 3 hour game play.
PS3 was fatter as well and had better cooling.
@@Tops-gn1xx it’s nothing to do with the fact there less powerful. PS3’s are just better in general and have better cooling systems. When I touch my PS3 slim after about 4 hours I can barley feel any heat, and it’s running mods as well. But when I touch my original PS4 it feels like there’s a fire inside because the plastic case is so thin and cheap and the cooling system can’t handle the computing power properly.
Sony made machines tends to overheat a lot. Example, their Xperia Zed phones and all their Xperia branded phones.

cover it with dust or sand, its a great protect. i put mine in water and then in fridge. afer 2 years its run perfectly inside my trash

However, mine gets hot and makes noises after ~5-10 minutes of inserting a disc. You seem like the only one in the world who may know about this, so... any idea? I've been looking everywhere, I will be really thankful for all your help!

My 60GB PS3 (which is over 10 years old now) would get up to 72 C* and with a fan mod it's somewhere in the 60*C range. I'm not worried about my slim overheating compared to this.
I've just replaced thermo paste, cleaned heat sink and fan, its still gets too hot and shut down after 30mn when playing games. Watching videos on the console doesn't make it overheat and turn off. How to fix ? I think the fan is not powerful enough to cool heath sink

My brother had his own little gaming room built for his gaming consoles PS3/PS4/PS5, he used to keep temperature below 20°C with AC, his consoles never had any heating issues.
Room temperature and amount of dust entering the room where your consoles is, effects it's heating time

Thanks. I just bought a PS4 Slim and I was pretty worried when I touched it and the surface under it and it was pretty hot after playing for a while. In my mind, hot machine=danger, so I was pretty scared it might get damaged. This takes a load off my mind.

thx for the videos, the probleme is that once it started to get hot. It usualy gets worse and worse until you hit the sweet spot where the console start overheating for real. Once you get there its too late.
Mine is completely clean, but still gets super hot just by staying in the main screen for 10 minutes and the fan even tho the PS4 is starting to get super hot it runs slow, like just by gently pushing it with your finger it stops, so I dunno. everything else is fine it just, don't keep up with the heat

No, I would always choose a slim over the first gen
The original ones fans sound a lot louder on max loud than the slim fans sound in max load.

PS4 overheating is just a sign of use, really. I still have my pre-ordered system and today I replaced the thermal paste and it runs like brand new. Cleaning dust out and replacing paste is completely normal and just something you'll have to do every once in a while. Quite happy with this little machine and if I ever replace it I'm gonna miss the light bar and touch sensitive buttons.. Not to mention the nice design.
Thanks for clearing that out, i got a PS4 Slim a couple months ago and was always wondering how that could be possible, that the whole thing felt way too hot on touch, but yeah, it's brand new, doesnt show any red light and runs smooth. It's won't get too hot (as long as the heat sink isn't plugged) and it definitely won't explode.

I haven't seen a red light. Still to stop me worrying, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE USB LAPTOP COOLERS WITH the TWO BIG FANS AND HAS TO HAVE THE ALUMINUM TOP PLATE WHICH CONTACTS THE side of PS4 touching the cooler. Several models of this. Mine was $20.

My question is from your perspective how is the reliably so far on both the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S? Better than the fat models?

Yep...that's what I show in this video...it will turn itself off when it gets too hot.
The problem is that its pointless most will simple get screwed even without ever entering the overheat protection, there's a really big number of people with the console turning off and doesn't start up or just simply the BLOD.
I had the latest best version of the PS4 before the slim (3rd version with the big cooler and slightly more energy efficient than the 2nd version and way better than the first one), I sold it to a friend when I upgraded to the PRO.
My friend already have it for almost a year, but last weak the console had the starting problem, it would start then shut down, I guess the console is dying, good thing is its still under warranty until like March next year.
Both me or him always let the console cool down at least 5min in the menu after playing a game before turning off, it has nothing around it so it has enough cool air to push and the consoles just seem to be made to break after warranty is over just like the PS3.
My current PS4 Pro also already shutdown while gaming twice already, I don't know if its also failing or if its other software errors, I barely used the console, I left it OFF for like half a year.
Both consoles are also completely dust-free, not a single bit of big dust on the air entrance...
Every time I clean my room I always clean my console with the Vacuum cleaner with a big brush adapter (so it also doesn't make much pressure and doesn't turn the fans inside, just cleans outside).
Never use a powerful vacuum cleaner directly or with the high pressure small head adapter, it might cause overvoltage damage inside if the fans overspin since they create electricity while spinning, for that the fans need to be stop from moving and only then you could blow\suck air at high pressure.
Omg thank the Lord my PS4 shut off randomly while watching UA-cam it's either it literally died or I just didn't pay attention to it but how long does it take for it to turn back on

I've never gotten the overheating beeps and light, but it does got hot pretty quickly and I checked my hard drive to see if that was what was being affected, and the hard drive was hot enough to burn me. I've dusted the system as best as I could and honestly, I don't know what solution I could go with right now.
Yeah bro you might need to clean it out and reapply some new thermal paste to the apu. Our tech guru has a video on it check it out and make sure that you know where every screw goes and WATCH how you connect and disconnect ribbon cables

I noticed one of my Fan wires was loose and had to be adjusted to make sure it was getting a full connection. After words, fan worked again, and system ran fine besides overheating when playing a CD game. downloaded games and streaming services run fine.

No, it won't affect anything. It doesn't get nearly hot enough to cause any problems like that.
if by any chance you happen to reply, in terms of temps and noise which version of the ps4 do you recommend is the quietest and the coolest ? my ps3 is really really loud and i don't want to make that same mistake
