Great work, Tony! Interesting that you took a chance with repairing the fan, and if it lasts for some time - then even better. Enjoyed this video, and all of your work!
Thank you! Well it wouldn't be a "tinkering shop" without tinkering with something! :) I'll use that fan for my other two PS4s for testing. If and when I get one working, I might replace it.
Good job! I currently picked up the same model for the same price off facebook marketplace. The listing stated works but shuts down due to overheating. I quickly found out it is the same issue you have a faulty fan. This PS4 has been previously opened because it’s missing a single torx screw. I have already ordered the replacement fan. This will be my 2nd PS4 clean/restoration project. I’ve previously cleaned/restored a PS4 Slim. I replaced all thermal pads, thermal paste, cmos battery and installed a 2TB SSD. I plan on doing the same to this PS4 possibly only installing a 1TB SSD in this model.
For that money that is a great deal. And great job in fixing it. The fan should be opened from the back side. Just like the old PC fan. They used to have a rubber plug that after removing it gave access to an C clip that held the shaft in place.
Nice find. You should also always clean the round rubber on the spindle motor when cleaning an optical assembly. (q-tip and alcohol) That makes the disk stick while rotating. I too have 3 PS3's and looking for a cheap PS4 to get hold of.
That's an excellent point - To be honest I think I did, it just didn't make it to the final cut! I used some paper towel though as I found that cotton buds left lint behind on the rubber. Thanks for watching!
Great work and nice score. Wouldn't mind getting that for that price. I'll be fixing up all my SNES stuff here soon. I have a ps2 that needs a new laser as well I need to put back together.
This console wasn't the worst i ever seen. Got an xbox 360 that had way more dust but mostly cat hairs inside, the controllers had half a packet of crisps and beer residu inside. The older consoles are way cleaner to work on. The fan probably has a clip on the other side of the shaft, drilling open the centre on that side should give access to that. Worst case there is some nice copper wire for trace repair inside of it👍
I didn't think of drilling the other end, thanks! Oh yes, I've seen videos of worse consoles online. Still, if I had a "device" and it starts making the sound of an airplane, I would take it to someone who can take a look? :) Thanks for watching!

My ps4 has overheating problem not even 3mins has passed it suddenly turns off with a warning sign of overheating. So, I tried opening it and cleaning all of its components and putting thermal paste, done it all for the first time. Still overheating, but improved I tried stay idle in a game for more than 30mins. So, I tried changing the fan, the thermal pad looks still okay not dry so not changing it and now it's good no jet engine noise and there's no burning like smell (the power cord is not the problem and so the outlet because its not hot). Beside the fan the cause of overheating might be the wires not properly connected, screwing too tightly, loose power cord, too much thermal paste on cpu or too thick thermal pads. In addition, when putting thermal paste put a little bit more in the middle of cpu and dont use liquid thermal paste they say its bad for ps4. If one thermal pad has crack change it too.
