  • About 9 years ago I built a version of AMT/Model King's Open road camper using AMT's 1972 Chevy pickup. At the time I had no idea I was reuniting parts that had been made for each other more than 40 years ago by MPC!

    I have one of the original MPC kits w/69 Chev truck. I bought it it back when it was a new release, can't believe I still have it after all these years. Not too crazy about the simple chassis, been spoiled by recent releases.

    I saw some info recently that Moebius is releasing a series of the GM 67-72 pickups much like the F100 series they did. Given the detail they put into the kits, I see a welcome addition to the these campers and roll back kits using the updated chassis that I feel sure will be in the Moebius kits.

    It amazes me that they have not updated this kit? You can take the revell 66 Chevrolet truck kit chassis to make a short bed version of the 71!

    Cooooooooooooooooooooooooooool. I wasn't interested in building one as a period correct Camper. I modified one of the Sliding doors to slide open and close. It wasn't hard to do. I also covered all of the Camper Windows in Limo Tint. Paneled the interior walls in a lighter more modern color. Basically printed a nice pattern on some decal paper and applied as usual. But then, I'm a lot more insane than most.

    Amazingly, nobody has yet made a '73-'87 Chevy square body long wheel base fleetside- one of the most popular trucks ever made.

  • @MikeBrown-ii3pt
    @MikeBrown-ii3pt 5 років тому

    I used the rear axle, springs, rims and tires from the Monogram(?) Ford F-350 dually on mine. You're correct that the wheelbase should be longer and also that the coil spring rear suspension was only used on light duty GM pickups of the period. That basic "truck arm" setup is still used under NASCAR stock cars today! My current project involves 2 of the Revell 78 GMC plow trucks. I'm cutting the frames and beds to duplicate my long bed 78 GMC 4x4. I'll also be using a bunch of aluminum and brass to build the brush guard, dual exhaust, receiver hitch and a car trailer for it. I've already finished a model of my 78 Camaro drag car to ride on the trailer. Wish me luck!

    Model looks great!! The wood on the cabinets is very convincing. One minor thing I noticed though is I don't think the master cylinder would work too well mounted that way :)!! Maybe put a power brake vacuum booster behind it.

      @dansmodelworx  7 років тому

      retroolschool Hi Elton, I assume you are looking for some dual rear wheels for a heavy duty pick up? I have some but I kinda have plans for them. If you give me a bit of time I should be able to make you some resin copies that should be pretty good. Email me at dansmodelworx@gmail.com and we'll see what I can do for you! Oh and thanks for the Montreal memories!

      Hi Dan, thank for your reply. I need front and rear wheels. A friend of mine suggested that I buy the 91 Ford LXT you reviewed but dont want t use that cab with a 60s garbage rear loader. Frankly I regret selling my 65 Fleetside model. Also Ive seen resin wheels on ebay, but find them WAY too expensive!

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  7 років тому

      retroolschool Yeah I know what you mean about aftermarket resin parts. Contact me at my email and I'll send you some pics of the wheels I plan on duplicating for you, both front and rears. They are from the Revell 77' GMC wrecker. A small donation towards resin will cover things. We'll talk via email.

    Thanks for the history lesson Dan. Truck and camper look great.
    Do you think you could use one of the super duty model kits with duallies out back and the camper?
    Or would there be an age difference - old camper, new truck?
    I have the camper kit but need the right truck.
    Vaughn

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  7 років тому

      scaleautoworkshop I don't see why not. Yes the camper would have been built in the 70's but who's to say that it wasn't well cared for and in good shape? A new owner, you, buys it and says I have a 92' super duty dually, let's put it on that! I've seen people put fairly old U-haul bodies on brand new chassis. I say go for it! Thanks for watching.

      Yes that is so true, I should have known better. My son bought a travel trailer last summer it was 27 years old and was just like brand new, it was well taken care of. Thanks so much, now to find that truck kit.

    I have an original kit that I have had for so long I can't remember when I got it. I pull it out ever so often, want to build, but, really don't like the primitive style of the truck. Do like the camper, so guess I will replace the truck and keep the camper.

  • @unclesweetiesmodelworks
    @unclesweetiesmodelworks 2 роки тому

    Great build. I have the Wedge/Camper kit. Comparing the kit camper and the real camper, it looks like the kit was modified to fit the wheelbase of the existing truck kit. The wheelbase should be that of your D300 reference. Also, the camper/wedge kit does not come with the second axle piece or wheels and tires for the tandem axle wedge. All somewhat disappointing.

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  Рік тому +1

      Yes, this kit definitely requires more than what comes in the box. The set of wheels that they include to make the camper into a trailer just don't cut it. As well they don't even mention that the body of the wedge is intended to have tandem axles not a single dual. I like a good challenge but this kit could discourage many others.

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  6 років тому

      kathie bryn I got my kit way back in 2008. Although it was an AMT/MPC kit, produced by Round2, it was actually released through ModelKing. The kit does not appear in the current Round2 catalog so I'm thinking that you will have to resort to the second hand market. Round2 is always rereleasing their older kits so it may come out again.

    In 1967 they made the tooling for a 1972 truck??????????????

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  7 років тому +1

      Mason Cox The second generation of GM's (and Chevy's) C/K line of trucks ran from 1967 until 1972. there were small differences between GMCs and Chevy's and between model years. Most of these differences involved the grill, therefore AMT and MPC could simply modify the chrome sprue to offer any year between 67 and 72. Thanks for commenting!

    • @andrewjohnson8929
      @andrewjohnson8929 6 років тому

      The camper was released in 1959 by MPC. In 1971 MPC released their Chevy pickup with the six-wheel "Racer's Wedge" version. AMT released their 69' Chevy pickup with a bed cover style camper shell. The camper shell was used earlier in 1968 with the reissue of their 64' Ford pickup.

      Jerrys autos Yes being available only in the second hand market only, now you will have to pay "collector's" prices. As well since it was a ModelKing release I don't know if it was produced in the same numbers as a mainstream Round2 release. I guess I lucked out and got mine when they were current. Add it to the long list of kits we'd all like to see re-released.
