Fathers Day Special 2024, restoring MPC's General
Yes, I'm still alive. My father built this model back in 1981. He passed away in 2017, and we are repairing some of the damage incurred over the years.

I got this kit around 1982, built it poorly, started to rebuild it (in the mid-90's) as a companion piece to go along with my father's AMT Ladder Chief kit (which he never finished), put it away incomplete, and now that the fire truck and building front are both complete, it now gets its turn at completion.

    Currently reliving my childhood building this very "golden oldie"! Nice seeing how you problem-solved. I had a chuckle noting the propeller tip discrepancies for the yellow-as you did. Hopefully I'll add the below-wing fuel tanks with tiny plasti-card filler caps and more accurate attachment points. Love your finish. It's fun trying to improve a 1960s model kit.🙂🙂🙂

    First off, awesome videos. I now live in VT but grew up in Welland. I thought I knew everything about the canal but was surprised by the lock that lead from the canal to the Welland river (I new there was one right in Welland that lead to the East but I didn't know there was one on the Chippawa side. The thing I am not sure if you knew or not but when you talked about the aqueduct in Welland, the reason there is cement on the top edge is that it was once used as a swimming pool! they poured steps on one end and closed the other end off with a wall and dirt (it was actually open at that end for a long time and used unfiltered water from the canal). My dad owned a small family show store on Main Street in Welland for many years (Ernie's Shoes .. 1964 - 1976). I could walk out the back of his store and go to the pool. There was no indoor pools at the time ... Port Colborne got it's first in 1967. I took my swimming lessons there! The original aqueduct walls where the pool walls with a suspended walkway on one side. There was also a small pool right near the river. Great Video's .... Thanks ... Mike in Vermont

      Very interesting! It also explains something I saw online a few days ago. It was an 8mm home movie shot back when the lift bridge in downtown Welland was operating for the last time. It was maybe 1973, and there was a shot looking towards city hall, and the segment of the Second Canal was filled with water. Your information about it being used as a pool explains this! We're glad you enjoyed the video.

    David R Lentz, USA I remember this Monogram kit of the Packard classic car. I recall the body and the wheel fenders were a glossy black (so I kept it that way), not brown. I had sold it to a master-level car body man; he and a businessman, when they had acquired the rights to the name, had formed a car manufacturing firm to produce Packards. They were quite grand, selling dozens to people as far away as California. I used the money to buy another, as well as other related Monogram Classics kits; this second attempt was better. Decades later, I built a pair of Duesenbergs; one a buff with a deeper brown, and a leather interior, the second gloss black with a burgundy accent, and for the interior, Humbrol’s reddish Wine (scarcely a minute after I had typed that, you mentioned your Humbrol leather colour turned to sludge or goo!). You shortly thereafter noted your missing distributor. I supplanted mine with aftermarket versions that had the wires extending from it. I did not fully understand the engine firing sequence, nor how to set each to its proper spark plug; I have no idea if I correctly had set them. I also found an aftermarket set of interior door fixtures, from which I added to each window cranks and door handles. In admiring your finished results, I must sat that your father’s use of the bright blue-the breathtaking azure of a cloudless dusk-body paint makes for a truly elegant monochromatic colour scheme. If I ever have the chance, I would buy several: one a gloss black, the other a two-tone French vanilla and caramel. And perhaps a white one, with brass trim in lieu of the silvery chrome.

  • @user-ni2zo5zo3c
    @user-ni2zo5zo3c 2 місяці тому

    David R Lentz, USA Oh, would I love a few of these (along with Duesenbergs, Packards, Cords, Auburns) for different settings, most of their bodies in two-colour paint schemes (a few monochromatic, especially gloss black). These I would mix in with the various versions of AMT’s Ford later Model T kits available (I think I have counted at least four stock manifestations: roadster, coupe, pickup truck, depot hack, etc.), Lindberg’s three 1926 Mack trucks, and MPC’s 1921 Oldsmobile (this in the BMCK channel “GRANNY'S HOT ROD” [of The Beverly Hillbillies television programme] UA-cam build video, Saturday, 6 November, 2023); these would populate my streetscape diorama, placing them all in a vibrant Roaring ’20s streetscape diorama in the late 1920s a couple years prior to the Wall Street crash of October 1929.

You mention that the vehicle in the video is a Euclid R22 Quarry Truck, and its 6-71 Detroit Diesel Engine some “called the most efficient way to turn diesel fuel into sound!” Actually, this is “the most efficient way to turn diesel fuel into” black exhaust smoke.

  • @user-ni2zo5zo3c
    @user-ni2zo5zo3c 2 місяці тому

    David R Lentz, USA You build here is doubly delightful for me to watch: 1) a project I could not afford, and 2) I do not know my skills for so ambitious a project: a resin kit. At 12:57, you impress upon us that this is a hobby. I by preference am more inclined to exacting accuracy and precision-spelling (my area of expertise!), maths (not my area of expertise!), measurements, models, everything. However, as I was building a model kit, someone a decade or so past had corrected me-I cannot recall exactly-something like a photograph in a monograph on that particular vehicle showing a supporting fixture with six bolts, three to each side in a 6-inch flange (if that even is the correct term) attaching to the chassis framing. Another fellow showed me on an actual truck the same supporting fixture with four bolts, two to each side in a 4½-inch flange attaching to the chassis framing. He inferred that several years after the initial production run, the manufacturer had made improvements on later vehicles that the photograph represented, during which time the designers and engineers evidently had incorporated numerous upgrades. My kit was correct at its time of production. When it comes to corrections, I greatly prefer them well prior to my making the error, when I am in a good position to do something to resolve the matter. Instead of extruded polystyrene C channel for added sturdiness, why would one not use steel C channel stock of the appropriate or similar dimensions? I ask not to criticise (I would be five years late for yours anyway!), but to learn from your greater wherewithal and experience. I have experienced sags in large structures of models. And I am just a word nerd! In any case, how did it work for you? Had you finished the Dodge tow truck?

  • @scottsheward4740
    @scottsheward4740 2 місяці тому

    I’m super late to this party so I apologize for resurrecting an ancient comment section but I have just bought this kit and found your build series - I think it’s the best available for this subject, by the way. I was just wondering why you didn’t strip the chrome off a few of those parts, the tanks in particular, rather than trying to fight your way around it. The tanks on most heavy trucks are made of aluminum which some people like to polish to a mirror finish. However, no matter how much they are polished they never look the way kit chrome does. One of my biggest peeves about model kits is the gawdawful way the chromed parts look. I hate the way that chrome finish gives even the best built model a toy-like appearance, so I almost always end up stripping the chrome trees and either BM foiling or spraying parts with one of Alclad’s excellent options. This gives the part, and the model in general, a much more realistic appearance. That aside, I’m loving this build (excellent job stretching the frame!) and I’m enjoying your videos. Yes, I have subscribed. As a further aside, I have found K&S alloy tubing to be excellent for making driveshafts as it is straight and true and won’t bow the way a long length of plastic rod does. I would like to have seen that shaft split into two parts, or at least had a hanger bearing added. A single unsupported shaft of that length would probably deflect a bit and shake the crap out of the truck. 😀 Oh! One more thing: I note that you’re in southern Ontario so you may not see many northern haulers in your area. In northern Ontario (and many other parts of the country) larger deer such as elk and moose crossing the road at night are a danger to truck drivers. Moose in particular are heavy enough that, if struck by a highway truck, they can absolutely destroy the hood/grill, and tall enough that their main bulk will come through the windshield into the cab. Variations of the “Mad Max” style front bumper and moose bar that comes with the kit are quite common on trucks that frequent areas populated by these enormous creatures. It is terrifying enough to encounter one crossing the road at night in a heavily forested, extremely rural area where the only light is that of your headlamps. It is almost impossible to avoid striking the animal, so drivers try to protect themselves by installing very large, heavily-built bumpers/bars on the front of their rigs. Thanks for all the great content. I am stealing a lot of your ideas and techniques.

    This was my dad’s machine, I built the hood and grill to look like the newer model, but it originally had the old rounded front end and I also built the custom ladder on the side, which was modeled after a Hough 65 pay loader ladder. It looks exactly the same as when we sold it in an equipment auction in 1996 after my dad died, other than It used to say Sheren Bros. Excavating on the side electrical covers. It had old air plane tires on the back when we sold it. This earthmover/pan was located in Grand Ledge MI. Glad to see it still running❤️
