Really moving and expressive. Instead of shredding, Jeff Berlin puts his incredible facility to use creating rich, emotional, gorgeous music. It's not about how many notes you can play but rather playing them with guts, feeling and conviction. Thanks, man.
As I've said for years: Jeff Berlin is worth the price of admission alone. I remember seeing him at The Last Chance in Poughkeepsie playing with Holdsworth and his bass solo was supreme!
Back MANY years ago, When i was playing bass, people would ask me "Who the hell is this Jeff Berlin"? I guess it was because i was always talking about him and how much i admired him. i had a good reason to admire this guy i think.
When Jeff came to Venezuela, he did a beautiful version of our national anthem and some influential people went nuts- in a bad way. Too bad Venezuelan press and politics were musically challenged to appreciate it, and Jeff never played it again. I just hope someone taped it so I can hear his version.
Id rather listen to Mr. Berlin playing the N/A than someone singing it , you cant get any more beautiful than this . Hes a brilliant musician the best !
What are you talking about? There is an incredible groove in Jeff Berlin's playing here. Just because there isn't a definite and perfect tempo to it doesn't mean it can't flow... If that were true, plenty Classical music would be down the toilet by now. He's playing the bass freely, chordally, and melodically, and it's beautiful. If by "groove" you mean "playing a bassline in a band setting in time with the right feel," and if that's all you think a bassist should do, then I'm sorry.
@CoffeeJanitor Thank you for bringing this up. Where do people get this the idea that chords are not meant for bass? It doesn't make sense to me. I mean, pianists used chords in bass parts all the time, and no one cares about that.
@cclaud100 It's actually a Dean bass guitar. Quite a surprise, seeing as how dean isn't exactly known as 'high dollar' instrument. Maybe it's just me, but dean kind of has the stigma about it. I always think of it as a 'beginner bass'. But Jeff really likes it - and I have grown to like it as well. There's way too many players that have that 'slap' tone. It's refreshing to hear a bass like this.
As a bass guitar player (rank amateur that I am) it's amazing to finally find someone who plays as I do in my mind. There os only one type of music in the world; the type you like.
By far the best national anthem on bass- he doesn't just know how to reharm a bit, he has real artistry and paints with the chords whilst retaining the soul and direction of the piece.
Amazing as always! He was the reason 'cuz I started to play bass so many years ago... I love him...and sometimes hate him... But he is an amazin artist! Thank you for upload Fabio
amazing, and he took time to talk to me when i met him, we chatted about influinces for about 20 mins, and then he hugged me, have me an autograph, and took a picture, really nice guy. Billy and Stu too right on!
wow loveley!!! USA n UK national anthems together in unity! i never heard my anthem played so well (UK) - im well aware this tune is also 'my country tis of thee' but without words can be the english national anthem aswell!!
jeff berlin, i hate you for making songs hard to learn. i tried learning tears and heaven, i was so proud of myself, i was like "ok got the first part now, only 200 more different chord shapes and patterns to go!" but in all seriousness, you are epic, i love you.
I dont mind the string noise at all. Classical guitarist have string noise and its part of the expression in his playing. Id get rid of the reverb though he does not need it. That beautiful tone is incredible and this is not just shredding but something he painstakingly worked out. At times it sounds like 2 or 3 instruments playing and he is not even tapping or slapping. Berlin is an original and one of the greatest bassist in the world. We only get to see him at Namm shows or doing clinics on utube these days. I wish he was gigging more.
Most people don't lift up their fingers when they are playing, they either mute the strings with their right hand or the use this nifty little device called a noise gate that blocks out lower volume noise, seeing him play like this proves that he has very nice control over the guitar because he isn't using a noise gate, it requires more skill to play like that. And if you really feel like badmouthing someone then why don't you play it better, then ill listen...
@GreenbergBass I didn't realize that. I guess I see what you mean because I know this great jazz guitarist who plays some excelling fusion/jazz and his tone is always too high on the treble end. He never uses the neck pickup. I like when players mix it up by switching pickups here and there for effect. It makes a difference. I have played guitar 25+ years and have always had an affinity for bass. I just picked up a fretless SX short scale, having a blast learning and playing
@GaryNull Most people who think Cliff Burton is actually good are probably about 13-18 years old and don't know anything about, like, anything. Jeff Berlin on the other hand is bloody amazing.
@connorbassplayer - Because Leo Fender called it that. Doesn't make it right. He also called the Strat's vibrato bridge a tremolo. The electric bass isn't just a low guitar. It's descended from the double bass at least as much as it is from the electric guitar.
Really moving and expressive. Instead of shredding, Jeff Berlin puts his incredible facility to use creating rich, emotional, gorgeous music. It's not about how many notes you can play but rather playing them with guts, feeling and conviction. Thanks, man.
Thank YOU grilch. I love harmony and melodic motion and try to include these things when I play bass solos.
Absolutely incredible use of harmony. Great tone too.
A true piece of Art! Thank you Jeff Berlin!
oh Mr. Berlin, it is such a great adventure to watch YOU play. You are the BEST, Sir.
Brilliant so well-thought-out. I think Jaco would have been very proud of you.
As I've said for years: Jeff Berlin is worth the price of admission alone. I remember seeing him at The Last Chance in Poughkeepsie playing with Holdsworth and his bass solo was supreme!
Just beautiful! A master at work.
2:25 omg! the theme with the little finger with the great groove bellow , incredibly well harmonized Sir .
Thank you Remi! :)
@ 2:10 sweep picking ??? and he did it without a pick. Jeff Berlin is one of the all time greats no doubt. Amazing stuff right here.
brings a tear to my eye
Amazing clear sound ! So many chords for a bass ! Amazing playing !
When I met Jeff he wrote on a piece of paper…..”Practice”❤😮
Back MANY years ago, When i was playing bass, people would ask me "Who the hell is this Jeff Berlin"? I guess it was because i was always talking about him and how much i admired him. i had a good reason to admire this guy i think.
What a sound.......

@CoffeeJanitor

OOOOH MY GOD!!!!!
amazing, and he took time to talk to me when i met him, we chatted about influinces for about 20 mins, and then he hugged me, have me an autograph, and took a picture, really nice guy. Billy and Stu too

Scary good.
Hear! Hear!
It don't get better than that!
This is incredible!
That run at 3:15 is just ridiculous! I'm blown away here!
That has to be one of the most ridiculously awesome ways to play the star Spangled Banner I have ever heard. Holy shit.
Jazz bassists are the greatest
wow loveley!!! USA n UK national anthems together in unity! i never heard my anthem played so well (UK) - im well aware this tune is also 'my country tis of thee' but without words can be the english national anthem aswell!!

great counterpoint
his bass is so gorgeous.

I love this
Jeff is the greatest bassist breathing!
that guitar sounds awesome.
what an amazing bassist
The section at 2:26 is simply sublime!
That run from about 1:34 to 1:43 is just awesome.
Brilliant, what else you got?
Just in case you've forgotten WHO the best Bassist on the planet is...
holy bass chords batman!
saw him live last night, he is just amazing !!
also funny with the joke about the german who said
"u told zis joke last year" :D
Oh my God. Is he quoting Charles Ives at 2:26 ?

Say what you want about Jeff Berlin but this is pretty amazing.

An Awesome musician., who just happens to be a BASSIST..!
eso es elegancia para tocar, calidad bien !!!
I just got done watching Stu Hamm's version. Both are great, but yours is definitely more complex! cool stuff!!
@GaryNull Most people who think Cliff Burton is actually good are probably about 13-18 years old and don't know anything about, like, anything.
Jeff Berlin on the other hand is bloody amazing.
Un GROSO
That guys fingers move around like a spider's legs!
i like your funny words, magic man!
flat 7 at 1:22! He got it right. 👆🏻
@connorbassplayer - Pretty much means we're talking about two parts of the same thing. Heads and tails of the proverbial quarter, dig? ;)
Nice basslines. Very similar to the original trombone parts.
That version of the Star Spangled Banner did the flag proud!!!!! Most impressive and very beautiful!!
Estoy esperando que pongas un video con el himno de tu querida patria. Seguro que si se lo pides a Jeff lo hará.
JB! indeed!
@connorbassplayer - Because Leo Fender called it that. Doesn't make it right. He also called the Strat's vibrato bridge a tremolo. The electric bass isn't just a low guitar. It's descended from the double bass at least as much as it is from the electric guitar.
Incredibile
I loved it when he played God Save The Queen at 1:35
not comparable
my country tis of thee
i want to play this for an audition...anyone know where i can find the music??
proof that 4 strings are plenty
nathan wind That's a five string bass...
are you sure?
That's a four-string bass. Four tuning keys at the head, if you can't see the strings well enough...
ben no it isnt
Hi Thomas. I am playing a four string bass. I hope you the rendition. :)
