  • Michael Manring performs "The Enormous Room" in our average sized living room. This house concert date was Sunday December 2, 2007. For the gear geeks, the signal path is through a Boss GT-3 pedal board, to an Eden Navigator Stereo Preamp, to a QSC 1000w amp, split to two 4x10s (Ampeg and Glockenklang). In other words, we aren't using half of what's in the rack. (addendum) For what it's worth, this is MY rig, only the basses and the Boss Pedal Board are Michael's. So rip on me, not him for the gear.

Of all the virtuoso solo bass players around Manring is one of the few, if not the only one, to capture my attention on a deep emotional level. His playing is not just a showoff, a showcase of awesome and terribly complicated techniques. It's beautiful, haunting, otherwordly music.

Definitely. I think thats one of the nicest things about this video. Its a performance, but its not ostentatious. He seems so humble with his talent and it focuses all of the attention onto this incredible piece. I dig it.

That’s not just any fretless. That’s a custom built Zon, from a master luthier. I’ve got a beautiful Warmoth z-bass I’m in love with. I’m not worthy of a Zon.

I once saw what I thought was a woman with two heads - it was the amazing, inspirational Hensel twins, but I had no idea - walking across Tower Bridge in London. People were crying out and fainting.
This performance is the second most amazing thing I have ever seen.

The expression on the guy's face to Michael's right ... you know, the one whose jaw dropped to the floor... says it all!

The best bass video there ever was or ever will be. Such a simple, honest, beautiful performance.

I have been playing bass for over 16 years and I am an avid Jaco Pastorious fan. But don't let Jaco's legend overshadow this guy. Manring is nothing short of extraordinary.
