    Why are people making having natural hair so stressful? Since i found out what works for me, i do it and keep it simple, i stay with 2 to 3 products and i shampoo my hair every week, deep condition a few times a month and that's it, now my hair is healthy and longer.

    Water only wash may be acceptable for people who have thin or fewer strands of hair. I have thick, heavy hair, which easily absorbs odors from the environment. Water alone would not properly clean or refresh my hair. Without a moisturizing shampoo, and deep conditioner, I wouldn't even be able to comb through my hair and it would still smell.

    • @itsmaryjane17

      +Yellow yeah you're so right . Your labia and around your genitals needs to be washed with soap. And your ass?! Yeah that's the body part that needs to be washed the most .. Especially after going to the Bathroom. Sorry people toilet paper is not enough 🙄. It's incredible to see how many people don't practice proper hygiene practices . Especially in the United States where a bar of soap doesn't cost anything . By the way the best soaps for down there are natural ones with no fragrances . African black soap is a good one .

    • @msnnbc

      Melissa Lara Thank you. And it is really gross to suggest otherwise. I also use African black soap. Unnatural soaps do cause problems on sensitive skin areas, and in fact, they should not be used at all. Natural soaps should be used to clean the labia area.

    I agree with you 100% AHG!! What gets me is that none of the women I've seen doing this method exclusively use water & sebum. They do avc treatments, clay masks, okra masks, etc. They're still using items that can lift light dirt & buildup off the hair. Basically these women enjoy wetting their hair daily, doing scalp massages, and using minimal products. when I come across someone who exclusively uses water & sebum and has healthy hair, I may take the method a little more seriously.

      +Michie K Actually, like most people agree, you can adapt the method. The water only washing is just the washing part. Not the before or after. I only use water and my homemade shea butter cream to seal in the moisture. I also use flax seed gel to style sometimes. Other than that, nothing else goes in my hair. I use flexi rods to set my hair often. I have 4a/b hair. Lots of pictures on my instagram and even made a youtube video. Seems crazy, but my hair has never been better. I think this is only a method for people who do not mind playing in their hair every other day! lol

      Don't put so much value into the name of the regimen. I've been natural for 2 years and this is the first time I really FEEL natural. It's freeing, it feels amazing to wet your hair while your in the shower just like everyone else. My hair is moisturized 100% of the time, and when it feels like it's getting dry, just hop in the shower and let the water and sebum work its magic. If you successfully don't strip your sebum it acts as conditioner, deep conditioner, leave in, and sealant. The trick is cleansing the hair without stripping the sebum, because if you do you'll have to wait 3 or more days to get full coverage again. I'm here to say your pores will get clogged, so you have to scritch, massage, or use some natural cleanser. Many ppl still use shampoos and such, but they understand they will strip their sebum. They're okay with that and have devised a regimen where they treat their hair with oils while the sebum is coming back in. It's customizable.

    I don't understand the water washing only method. You're rinsing the dirt, but its still there. There are no surfactants to attract the dirt, for the water to rinse out. Scientifically, it doesn't make sense. If you wouldn't wash your body without some form of cleanser, don't do it to your hair and scalp. I'm all for natural products, but just using sebum and water only isn't doing an effective job CLEANSING. Water is doing nothing for the bad bacteria that builds up on your scalp, let alone other environmental dirt that your hair encounters on a daily basis.

The WATER ONLY RINSE METHOD works when your 1. condis with coconut oil for 30 mins 2. massage your scalp 3. rinse with warm water. 4. then you can add more coconut oil as a leave in condis and then add what you like. 5. repeat every 3 days. Why must everyone do one thing? Everyone is different and to each is own. I have been doing for a few weeks and I NO LONGER HAVE SINGLE STRAND KNOTS, FAIRY KNOTS, I HAVE MOVEMENT WITH MY 4C 7 INCHES HAIR. I will say I've DOING the water only wash method and I LOVE it!!! no its not for everyone but you also have to understand the process. I actually found out about by accident. I had mini braids and was watching videos on how people wash their hair. In between that I was rinsing my hair anyways because I like the feel of water on my scalp. when I took my braids down my hair was dry at the ends from where I had been mouisturing and sealing and soft and oily near my roots (but I didn't put anything on my roots as I didn't want my scalp to itch and have to wash my hair more. which yal know causes frizziness). I realize that was my sebum which no lie felt like silk when wet. so I clarified and started the process over. wearing my hair in twist and rinsing daily until I got full coverage. The WHOLE purpose of water rinsing daily is to get FULL COVERAGE which can take anywhere from 2 weeks to two months. Once you reach it that is when you add your natural cleansers (rhassoul clay, bentonite clay, acv, henna) and things that won't totally strip your hair. and there has been a study done with how the above items cleanse your hair. I can tell you I don't have single strand knots anymore and my wash day is a breeze. the sebum is similar to a pre poo. Some of yal reading this comments probably pre poo and add oils when your done. so what is the difference of using your own versus something else. If you have scalp irritation or dandruff you really should give it go and stop putting stuff on your hair when you don't understand the ingredients

    FINALLY! Someone is saying it! I feel like the natural hair community is bored. they out here doing the most. When I heard about this I was silently shaking my head. I did extensive research on it but when it came down to it I couldn't do it. It just sounds dirty! I get the sebum thing but why do you also have to have dirty hair. Why not wash your hair AND put oils on your hair. I can't even get into cowashing either. I did do it when I was relaxed and my hair was super moisturized but my scalped itchy like noting else. To me its not worth it. Would you wash your body with only water? Would you wash your body with lotion? SMDH I can't with these people. Also you probably heard about the inversion method also. Who has the time for that bullshit... maybe it works maybe it doesn't. What people need to understand is that your hair grows NO MATTER WHAT. YOU want long hair protect your ends.

    Each to their own. My health dictates that I do the water only wash. I hadn't known people called it that. I just called it rinsing. I'd be raised with having hair rinsed daily and weekend used to be for shampoo. I've been doing rinsing for years and years before I noticed the whole natural hair movement and the terms they use. I do it because I'm allergic to all soap and all those manufactured hair products even the so called mild/sensitive or hypo-allergenic ones. The last time I was able to use soap and shampoo was when I was a 11/12 when I resorted to trying unscented, ph balanced baby products then allergies got worse. I'm limited in what detergents I can use to wash my clothes as well. The docs have me using emollients as a soap substitute. I've tried it in my hair a few times and found it doesn't work for me. Since I'm not using all those products all I have to rinse off is excess oil and dirt. I will use some mild vinegar rinses and oat water rinses sometimes. I will use a little coconut oil and almond oil on the ends of my hair. The online natural hair movement introduced me to DIY hair masks so I've had a go conditioning with banana, yogurt and coconut milk. Hair gets rinsed every day (every other day in winter). My hair is thick MBL with lots of curl definition and is soft. I've never ever had short hair in my life and I've never relaxed it or used any of the other hair processing treatments. I don't blow dry or flat iron either. My skin can't take the heat.

    Yes!!! 🙌🏾 water only washing is pointless I can't even co wash I gotta use shampoo, I have way to much buildup. But it's just my own opinion so please, you people who do troll comments, just don't waste your time. It won't change my view point. But I shampoo and condition my hair every week and a half and my hair is healthy, long, strong even with low porosity.

    I do the water only method but i do use Bentonite clay/shampoo to wash my hair. I rinse my hair more often and that helps with tangles and loose hairs and I do use oil and shea butter. I mostly stopped using conditioner because in the climate I live it makes my hair poof up and feel rough. I do have coil definition now, I feel it is because of the increase of water on my hair... I understand your concerns I had the same so i tweaked the method a bit...

    • @Skygurl2012lmao
      @Skygurl2012lmao 9 років тому +3

      The same for me I use apple cider vinegar and water as "shampoo" and I am planing on making my own natural conditioner. I use a mix of oils Shea butter, argan oil, olive oil, vegetable oil (thanx Henny for the research), and a little coconut oil. My hair is benefiting from wetting it everyday or every couple of days I mean because I would only wet my hair like once or twice a week and my hair was dry. You have to change any method to fit your hair what won't work for one might work for another. I do understand Narada's reasoning though and I still like the video.

    I dont 'water only wash' however I rarely use shampoo. I live a very active lifestyle and sport is essentially my life so I usually just massage my hair under warm water in the shower just to wash away the sweat and stuff. I dont class this is water only washing as I use shampoo but at the rate I sweat which is literally every day using shampoo, I think, is too much. And to be honest I do it because its relaxing as hell, not because my hair likes it lalala. Love your videos AHG, very good video :). You actually taught me as to why people do the 'water only washing' but I can tell you personally it doesn't really do much for your hair, my hair only 'likes it' because my scalp is very quick to get dirty so when I cleanse my hair in the shower, my scalp is cleaner (not as clean as it would be with shampoo, obviously.)

    • @KBright2012
      @KBright2012 8 років тому +4

      Actually, the inversion method does work...although I did it back in high school without turning myself upside down. Over three months, I was able to grow my hair 3 inches. People probably just added the upside down part because they feel it would promote the circulation to go down the hair shafts -_-. It's just massaging the scalp, which promotes circulation on the scalp; whether, doing it upside down or not. Just like if you were to receive a bruise, massaging it promotes blood circulation to heal faster.

    lol it's real funny how often when people find stuff that's working for their hair hairdressers are always the first to criticize what they are doing... me i dont do the water only washing but i'am not gonna put down or belittle one who chooses to... i know a white woman who been doing this for years and she has naturally curly locs that before when using the ever glorious shampoo... (which didnt exist 500 yrs ago mind you and people had hair back then and lots )...since then her hair is thick, full no frizziness like before and shinier than ever... she does use on occassion baking soda and apple cider vinegar.. people constantly ask her what she using. why you hairdressers always gotta put people down?...Me myselft i use cleansing conditners (herbal essences and pantene both formulas the one for natural hair and even more so the cleansing conditner in the white bottle..)been for 9 1/2months hair never been thicker and shinier than before,, my texture has even got more wavier than before....letting go of shampoo was the best thing and guess what dandruff prob is gone!

    I was a little skeptical before I started it. You can't get caught up in the title without learning about the method. You don't strip your hair with shampoo, and it works for me! Every person that I've read about supplements the method with things like acv every now and then but to cleanse their hair only uses water. You might not understand it, but it works for plenty of people!

    • @nyeag4725
      @nyeag4725 9 років тому +2

      I'll also mention it is similar to the "wash and go" method in that you don't just simply wash and go...there are other steps involved, but the title is just a basic explanation. To each his own though, each person has to do what works for them!

    I water wash my hair once a week, and I love it. My hair is relatively short compared to your but it works for me. I think what your not getting is water washing isn't just running water through your hair. You have to massage your scalp loosening up all the dirt and build up. That's washes away. And for me I'm left with the natural sebum on my scalp which in the process also runs through your hair. I like it. I'm not saying I'm going to for the duration of my natural hair journey. But for now it works.

    I can understand why some people may be turned off on water rinsing; and that it may not work for everyone. I could care less what people do with their hair; I'm more concerned with what works best for my hair/scalp. The reason I tried it was because I had serious scalp issues regardless of what kind of shampoos (regular and organic) I used. I have to say I no longer have scalp issues, my hair is growing, and it has gotten thicker. At first I could not fathom just using water, but I was desperate to find relief. Believe it or not, my hair actually comes out squeaky clean. To unclog the scalp, I massage and lightly scratch my scalp at least once a day. So when you rinse, all that dirt is rinsed out. Also, I use natural ingredients to strip dirt. So, yeah, you don't just use water. I don't use any oils on my hair/scalp so maybe that's why it's easier to clean. For those who are further interested, check out wateronlyhairwash She gives steps on how to keep your hair/scalp clean. :-)

      Yes this method has been totally working for me for almost 2 years now, with better results than when I was using shampoos and products. My hair is growing at least an inch per month, and thick to the ends. I’ve gone from BSL to hip length in under 2 years with regular trimming. My hair and scalp comes out clean and fresh - no dandruff, smells, or flakes. I don’t even use other other products whatsoever except filtered shower water and distilled water.
