    I'm so sick of all the white back grounds, everybody got the same ikea crap and christmas lights behind a curtain. Then who wash they hair with a full face of makeup on ? This is the reason I don't do alot of video's anymore. I'm not trying to keep up with the youtube Kardashians. All these video's are fluff ! If I don't have anything to say I refuse to do a fluff video. UA-cam has become one big infomercial...smh !

    Totally agree. I don't even buy curl cream or any of that junk anymore. My mama said it best: just make sure your hair clean and grease it and braid down at night. Best natural hair advice ever. I love your channel because the vids are simple plus I like your personality. These females be doing way too much. " I wash my hair once a year but co wash everyday" ew.

      Ikr. I wash my hair with medicated shampoo and detangle with a washout conditioner. Add gel. That's it. Deep condition when it feels too dry.

      Greasing the hair, braiding it down, and washing it twice a month is what my grandma would to me and my sisters' hair as kids. Our hair was super healthy and grew down our backs. Now-a-days, everyone thinks the secret to healthy hair is piling loads of products onto their hair while taking hella vitamins and only cleansing their hair once every blue moon. I never understood why some UA-camrs take out shampoo from their wash routines, either.

    I keep seeing that some people are getting the impression that I was going to stop making videos or that I have nothing else related to natural hair to talk about. That's not an issue for me. I can talk about natural hair all day, I just refuse to sit and regurgitate the same topics over and over again. The natural hair videos aren't going anywhere.

      +AfrikanHairGod I completely agree. One point you made in your video was that back in the day circa 2007, and mind you when I say back in the day, I'm talking about back when there weren't ANY commercials on youtube it did feel ORGANIC. I would rather people post videos about things that they actually care about rather than chugging out these paid videos, and recycled material. Its okay to come back when you feel inspired and have something to say. I have no qualms with that.

      +Amina “Falala” Tinkala I've seen all that done and discussed many times too. The truth is that most people don't want to see that so most vloggers don't waste their time making them. Everyone wants the styling videos which is why that is mostly what you see.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  8 років тому +5

      +Amina “Falala” Tinkala thank you. But yes it's sad that the variety is lacking but that is mostly in part to the viewership. I can speak first hand. I always get excited to do extremely informative and unique videos but when I do, it doesn't receive the same reaction as say if I do a rant video like this one. People say the hate the way UA-cam is now but that's collectively due to them and the attention that they give certain videos.

    I agree with you. I stumbled upon YT hair videos back in 2010, and I actually miss those days. It was more pure, for lack of a better word. Every video on hair nowadays is just a commercial. Hookers up in here wearing flash eyelashes and three pounds of foundation to install some "crochet" braids, posing to some whack techno music for the first two minutes of every video. I became so bored with hair videos, a couple of years ago! I mean, how many twistout videos do we really need? I do think it's good that people have been able to become entrepreneurs through YT and build their businesses, but it just felt a lot less gross back in the day, when people were just sharing their thoughts and experiences, instead of trying to sell you shit on the low because they're sponsored. I try to only watch (and make) videos that show or say something that I *haven't* seen a million times. Thanks for keeping it 100, as always!

      I feel the same way.. Prime example Longhairdontcare2011..bless her soul but her videos were real!! with a real background and all.
      I think that's my problem, I started a YT channel a while back to inform ppl on my hair because a lot of ppl ask me and I feel like I have no content to share because all the famous YToubers do the same thing. When I get a bomb twist out and want to share, I don't see the point because everybody else got them. And then you have the 3 something curly girls that get 40K view on their twist out videos which honestly always look like a wash-n-go to me. lol And then the make-up gurus get all the views now..like I know you don't wash your hair with make-up on. I like to share what I do with my hair but now it's all abt lighting and white background or people won't care.

    I watch UA-cam for education. The best thing I leaned from you was in one of your videos was when I spray my hair with water, don't manipulate my hair until the water has had a chance to soak in. That bit of advice SAVED my hair. Letting the water soak in before I touch it makes a HUGR difference in how my hair feels and how I can style it. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate every bit of info I can get. Thank you.

      Desiree M Oh no, don't get me wrong. I'm cool with doing the videos now. I realize that I have to just bubble myself in away from the natural hair gimmicks, methods, etc. and it just allows me to focus on what's important instead of getting distracted by everything else. UA-cam used to stress me out at times but as of right now, I'm fine. If you noticed my videos have had a more relaxed feel, like me looking all homely in my dookie twists on this video for example. That just works better for me than trying to put on for da 'Tube.

    I'm sick of these low self image women (in particular) talking about "texture discrimination " because they're the same ones subscribed to looseygoosey123 when they have 4c hair....Yet when you watch a 4c hair type that has a bomb wash and go, it's "oh, that can't be 4c." You're not gonna see yourself represented if you don't support others that look like you, and if you refuse to see the beauty in yourself...

Yet you don't see me crying and complaining talking about "GENDER DISCRIMINATION". Look how many red lipsticks there are. I like your truthful take on the BS that a lot of women face and buy into.

    Some people are more worried about growth instead of having a healthy head of hair. We may be "loving and embracing our hair" but some of us still have this complex and fascination with long hair and are trying to prove a point that our hair can grow. It's like the 'get rich quick' stuff but for hair. Everything is monetized. Every company hops on board when stuff is popular. Everybody and they mama has a co-wash, curl enhancer, sulfate-free this and that and I give it all the side eye. It's nice to see that we have representation/options in stores or whatever but I'm too frugal for that. Like with anything, what works for you won't work for me and what works for me is my nice, simple products that each costs less than $7! They work for my hair and my pockets Lol

    I'm glad you did thid video. I decided to stop doing natural hair videos this year. I really dont have that much to say. Im in a 6 month protective style challenge but my hair stays braided for the most part. I also only use a few products and I dont change them. I dont do length check. I dont do product reviews. I turn down collab offers from companies all the time because I dont use their products and I dont want to change my products just for one video. My hair is doing well on a simple routine. Im focusing now on my mental health videos and blog stuff. I have not been happy with doing hair videos for some time so I decided to just stop until I feel happy about it again. Until then I know that I am not focusing on hair videos for the rest of the year. Im happier focusing on other stuff that I enjoy.

    I agree, when I first started I was in my bathroom recording, now it's like people try to keep up with what they think is current thinking that it would get them more views because everything now is a big competition where as though some big UA-camrs say they don't want to work with smaller youtubers or you may have your audience keep comparing what you do to the next youtuber but in a negative way. All the original people got pushed to the background because for some reason alot of people like when youtubers be fake in their videos and try to act as if they have this perfect life. I'm sick of people saying to me, "I feel so sad for your hair" or "your hair use to be so pretty" I'm just over it.

    You're right. A lot of hair/ beauty videos are like infomercials. It's comically ridiculous when a company sends the same product to several people on UA-cam and they have to get creative when they review it; like we didn't just see that on a million other channels.

    I agree and the thing I dislike the most is when youtubers make an "updated" twist out,braid out, or wash and go tutorial, but it's the same technique and they're just using some new products that were sent to them. Having 5 different videos on a twist out shows you've done everything thing already.etc

    I think these feelings can be applied to any community or genre of UA-cam video. I remember watching videos back in like 2007 and comparing them to videos today, so much has changed. At the start, it was just people who had a voice, an opinion, getting themselves out there and finding people who felt the same about a given subject. Then people realized they could make money, so their channels exploded. And people that started as just viewers & commenters saw this and thought "Yeah, I want in on that! I want $$$ and fame and all that shit too!"...it's great now to see videos of higher quality, better lighting and sound and all that...but I miss the honest, blunt, organic way that UA-cam used to be.

    That moment when you realize you've WASTED so much money, time, and energy trying to get your natural situation together for YEARS! When all along it was ONLY as hard,expensive and time consuming, as YOU made it! If you want to make life a little easier.ha You'd learn to keep it simple, find the few things that work, and keep it moving. Our-hair community, as it stands, has lost the mission for which it was meant to stand for. It looks like greed and the love of money WINS the day once again!

    @Iamsonotmyhair 9 років тому +8

    Yes to all of this, lol, especially the few people that will watch the repeat video's requested AGAIN, the hair typing, the product overloads, discrimination etc. Its a lot. Information nowadays is just being recycled by the new you tubers anyway so it's redundant. LOL on people still searching for the right moisturizer. Meanwhile I'm over here struggling trying to get rid of the products I've accumulated over the years! These topics are also the reason you don't see a lot of you tubers from 6 years ago still doing videos.

  • @SplitSquats
    @SplitSquats 9 років тому +3

    You are so right when you say that information regarding natural hair has been exhausted. For those who have found what works best for their hair, there is nothing left to consume. I see this effect on popular hair blogs as well. Hair care tips are constantly recycled, and popular blogs either peddle products or stray into worthless gossip or "cultural" topics. I think this is an unavoidable end, however, and it may be the push that will eventually make hair truly "just hair".
    One of the problems I see right now is trying finding valuable information hidden behind the flashing lights. People new to natural hair or those seeking to change their natural hair care in some way may find it hard to reach genuine information. Like you said, popular youtubers seem more concerned with modelling and pushing products. They make videos aimed at using every product in a line and viewers are left to believe that the vidoes describe their actual regimens. I can see why people would be turned off to natural hair, thinking that it is too difficult, too expensive, and that their hair will never measure up to what they see in the videos.
    I haven't been natural for thaaat long. I have been at it for 6 years, and there are still things that I can and do learn. But for the most part, I'm good. Now I stay away from the drama that people use to stay relevant and only dive into specific hair care topics that I am interested in from moment to moment. And of course, I watch the UA-camrs that stay real. :)

I believe that you said that every thing about natural hair is done to talk about. I wanted to talk about natural hair on my channel, but I think I am too late on that train. But I know when I start my channel I will recommend to watch you because you have studied hair with you and your clients; and you are still learning.

    I just found your channel a few days ago and I've been hooked. I'll comment on a few of your videos but I'm so late. I think it's good for authentic UA-camrs to do videos on natural hair or just topics surrounding black hair and black lifestyle and ideas. I love the natural hair community that's authentic and not just stylish. Going natural for me as a corporate woman was a big deal. And I needed to listen to these videos and I learned so much on UA-cam just from coming here to learn about my hair. oh, natural hair care is like and addiction like you said :) but I think it's a healthy addiction. at least women/men have something constructive and positive to discuss and gather around. it's fun.

  • @qc2420
    @qc2420 9 років тому

    I agree with you 100%. When I first started transitioning, I was buying all these products and listening to UA-cam reviews. Then after a while, I was like wait a minute, how can one person review a hundred different products and they are all good and they all create amazing results? Then I got tired and braided my hair up and put on a wig. I have about 2-3 products that I love. I made my own hair butter. I switch between rod sets and wigs. And that pretty much sums up my routine. Now my hair is longer than it ever been. And I didn't buy any pills, do the inversion method, or spend a bunch of time obsessing over my hair to achieve it. Once you go to one hair show you've been to them all. I went to one and was over it ever since. Ha! I swear you are my best friend in my head! Keep doing what you do. Honestly you're the only natural hair professional I watch faithfully on UA-cam and thats because you have kept it real.

No fancy backdrops or lighting. Once I didn't have much else to "talk about", I stopped posting consistently. Came back a couple years later to see that I really didn't "fit" into the natural hair community anymore because ....1. I don't have more than 100,000 followers...which means I'm not considered a "guru" smh 2. My hair isn't long 3. I like to talk about more than just hair. But IT'S ALL GOOD! I know I'm exaggerating but I'm tired of seeing some naturals lowkey APOLOGIZE, or try to make up for having kinkier hair. like its kind of taking a step forward and then 2 steps back, and it took me a while to reaalize it.

I even caught myself "trying to find if Im 3c or 4a!!! I really questioned myself about if I really want to go natural. It is really all about whay you said here...let it grow....it dont need to be complex and expensive. I love this video!!! Well said!
