I found my own personal level and rebar to be handy for multiple tasks. Yes , I have a toolbox that I use at work. I found. Having my own personal leatherman is handy for if I'm doing a quick job or if I simply don't want to dig around my tool box. I carry it with a dedicated kinfe. I only actually use my Leatherman knife if I Lend my actual knife to somebody or If I Come across a knife job that might break my knife.
Thoughtful video. In the last week I have pulled two nails, scraped some paint, undone a flathead screw, and tightened a nut with my leatherman. I have also used the pliers multiple times to remove credit cards stuck in slots, the cutters to cut zip ties, and various other tasks. For me it is indispensable to the point that I have stopped carrying a separate knife. I tend to carry a Free P2 or a curl. I tried the bond, but I find I miss the one handed opening blade too much. Force of habit insofar as I grab a package before getting out my knife. But a bond and a jetsetter or manager is really a great EDC combo that I believe is UK legal. You get the victorinox scissors which are great and a small Phillips to go with the larger Phillips on the bond (similar to the one on the rebar). Add the cobra XS and a 4.5in Channellock adjustable wrench and you can get quite a lot of tasks done. I suppose we all have different needs and mine tend to be car and home repair even when I am out and about. 😂
Haha! You are definitely in the Leatherman camp! Now my Midnite Manager - I use that 2-3 times per day. I find it really interesting looking at what is indispensable for some people and a waste of time for others😂 Thanks for sharing your carry and your thoughts... Much appreciated!
I use a Roxon H1 Rhino and NexTorch MT10 on a daily basis. Yes, it's two multitools, but they complement each other very well and cover all of my "on the go" needs. Leatherman MTs are, for my taste, really too specific and way too expensive for the niche they fill individually and I'm not going to spend 200-300€ for 2 MTs just because of the brand, if I can get my hands on cheaper ones (in price, not quality!), like the one mentioned before (80€ for both together). Waiting for my SOG Powerpint to arrive. Could replace the NexTorch... P.S.: The NexTorch MT10 is basically a Next oil Flagship, only with a nail nick knife, so it's legal to carry in Germany (as opposed by the one handedly opened blade in the Flagship). Same with the Roxon.
Depends on your needs and what you call everyday. If you need it for work or a bit practical handyman. I think the Bond and Knifeless Rebar are perfect for the UK. You can have the others if you use for work or have a really good reason to carry. You couldn't just walk around with it in your pocket. Yes you could make a cheaper kit buying singular and some might be a little stronger, but having a multitool like leatherman you have less in your pocket. I think having pliers is so useful. The small ones seem like a good idea but really not that practical you might as well have a SAK with pliers which are forged so pretty strong for the size and tougher than the small multitools with pliers. The defacto for Multitools is : pliers with cutters, Screwdrivers, scissors, file and saw. The leatherman scissors are ok but not the best, so I would pair with a SAK. Then depending on your needs do you need a file or saw. If you have to compromise on a tool you can make up with a SAK. I think for a small useful EDC I would have the Leatherman Bond or PST, with a Victorinox Compact or Climber/SuperTinker and the Victorinox Wrench screwdriver which is really good and compact and you can still buy them on Amazon and elsewhere worth getting. You don't need to spend loads to get quality so a Leatherman Bond and a SAK is a perfect combo. IF YOU CHECK WEEKLY AT BLADEBRIDGE.CO.UK He sells discounted Mulitools on his site and Esty site Vintagegoodtools you can pick up yourself a bargain of a good Multitool or if you have loads of money get yourself or get him to make you one a custom SAK. Very cool.
I started carrying things like this at a fairly young age, I think I was allowed my first knife/multitool at about age 10, and ive carried alot of things and very varying quantities of them over the years. It all started with this idea of channeling your inner James Bond, thinking it was really cool and thinking that if I carry useful things, I must be useful. As time went by, the stuff I carry have only gone down and gotten smaller. At one point I would carry a pouch with all sorts of tools and ways to make fire, string and whatnot, that pouch now lives in a bugout bag as Ive just realized that its actually completely fine to walk over to a toolbox, car or backpack to get something, it doesnt NEED to be on your person at all given times. The only thing I typically carry now is a keychain multitool or a small knife like a Delica 4 or similar size. Instead I have moved over to having "loadouts" so to speak. The baseline is my keychain and/or a small cutting tool, thats the one thing I know for a fact I will use every single day. Then if I think it would be smart to, I add either a victorinox cybertool or roxon ks2e. If I know im going to do something, I leave those and take a Hogue Deka + LM Wave, if im actually heading spesifically to do work I leave those and take a Manix 2 XL + LM Surge which are always attached to my work pants anyway. Apart from that I have several sizes of toolkits sorted by what type of work they are intended for, so if lets say I need to go somewhere to fix a car I put on my pants and just grab the mechanical tool kit (repurposed tool suitcase with kaizen foam) and head out. Of course if im doing something at home, im fine with just walking over to a toolbox and getting it from there. Ive just gotten to a point where I dont feel any need to be able to start a fire just because im going out for groceries, or wearing pants that turn into a sleeping bag 'just in case'. If you look hard enough you will find a use for alot of things, but if you use your creativity a little I just find its typically never necessary, and if it is... Go get it? I keep hearing people say "oh but I use this aaaaall the time at work", but thats not really edc then, is it? Everyday carry is not the same as preparing for something you know you do 8 hours every single day. Nor is taking stuff you might need because you know you are doing something around the house, thats just called planning. To me, EDC means the stuff you take with you when you DONT think you will need anything, but you take it regardless, and from that POV I really think this video nails it. How often do you really need pliers without doing something that requires pliers? And if you dont need pliers, leathermans are just objectively worse than other tools that have the same implements.
Thanks! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your thinking. I agree totally and have a pretty minimal carry on my person. This is supplemented by extra stuff usually in mini kits. Then I just grab what I need for the day.
For everyday carrying I like the SOG Powerpint as it’s small, light and has decent tool set as well as accepting 1/4” driver bits. When working around the property I usually carry the LM Wave but recently I’ve bought some LM Chinese clones and they are surprising good considering the price.
Great video, and reflects my thinking. Multitools are a compromise. That compromise only makes sense to me if the multitool can be pocket carried with ease. If not, I am better off with a small toolkit of better, more ergonomic tools. So I built my own Leatherman Killer pouch similar yours. I use a Viperade VE18 Small. I can pocket carry the pouch if need be.
@MB_EDC FTR the kit has Kai 7100 scissors, steinwhale bits and bit extender, 711L Lollipop driver, 711L hex end ratchet, knipex cobra 100, uncle Bills silver grippers tweezers, LeverGear Edge XT pry bar, Victorinox Swiss Army 7 and 3 Swords Germany diamond file.
A leatherman/multitool is not meant to replace dedicated tools. Having said that, I still carry my leatherman sidekick nearly everyday for tinkering, saves me a trip to the tool box.
I used to carry a Wave on backcountry trips, but if you actually had to carve anything the handle was extremely uncomfortable. Too, the weight (threatens to drop a pair of shorts when you take a piss) and price are an issue (any tool used for fishing must almost be considered a consumable). These days I carry a SAK Fieldmaster religiously, adding a small set of pliers and a diamond file as need/ pocket space warrants. Cheaper, more pocketable, and more useful.
Im pretty much in the same boat. My reasons are different but from what Ive concluded I dont really need a plier based multi-tool. I want one, but I dont need it for EDC at all. My life just doesn't require having access to pliers. I carry a SAK Compact and that gets me through just about everything.
You could put some mini pliers in your pocket for a month and count how often you use them. I have the Knipex pliers...tried carrying them - but used them rarely - so they have gone into a mini toolkit in my work bag
For outdoor use I use a Dime, the main use is getting hot bits of metal off fires, before that a cheap keyring multitool from Wilko did the same job perfectly fine. I do take a Bond with me on longer cycling/touring type journeys along with dedicated bike tools. You don't feel the weight, it's on the bike and it's more of a just incase, nice that it's there thing. I get the impression the larger multitools are sort of the British army clasp knife of the 21st century, handy in a military context, hunting, things like that.
I carry a knife less rebar literally every day and every single tool in it gets used regularly (home and at work). I also carry a small folding knife and to be honest, it gets used maybe once or twice a month. Get a knife less rebar if the knife is the problem, go out of your way to use it as much as possible for the first week or 2 and you’ll either be lost without it or a plier multitool just isn’t for you.
Great point. I am looking at either a Knife-less Rebar or the Leatherman Bond which has non-locking tools. I am not sure that I would use it that much...
@@MB_EDC I highly rate the rebar. It’s a great toolset, everything in it has surpassed my capability expectations and if it’s not just loose in your pocket, it’s not too heavy. I carry mine in a pouch at home and on my belt at work.
@danielfuller3049 Good to hear that! It is great to find that one tool that completes your EDC. I think I'm just not a leatherman guy and don't regularly do the sort of stuff that the pliers are essential for...
For years I walked around with a multitool on my belt, in recent years a supertool 300. But because of all the knife attacks in Europe, people freak out when they see a holster on your belt. In addition, I have developed extreme environmental intolerance and I can only leave my house with a full face respirator (gas mask) so I already attract unwanted attention. So I said goodbye to my multitool as EDC and replaced it with a SAK Climber and a Knipex 125mm Cobra. And my e-bike is my main means of transport, so in my EDC backpack a Bacho 1/4" mini ratchet. A pair of Swalbe Marathon anti-puncture tires on it and with those 3 I solve 90% of the problems. A modern bike has a lot of Hex and Torx and those flat bits are far too weak. In total a bit more weight but better distributed and many more possibilities.
I find this very interesting because I came to the same conclusion about a month ago. It is all about philosophy of use. If what you need is set of tools for field expedient use I think some kind of Swiss Army knife is the way to go.
Great video, much enjoyed watching. 😁 I only own 2 Leatherman's and of the 2, I really only ever carry 1; my Charge TTi+. However, I carry my Vcitorinox Spirit X daily. 👍Take care my friend and Cheers!
I use my Wave every day. My wife makes fun of me for carrying it all the time but every time we have gone out and i left it at home there has been a issue i needed it.. 1 of the 3 times we actually got stranded in my truck.. and she had a cheap multitool that saved the day n her purse
I have a number of large pliers based multi-tools. I have carried a multitool as long as I remember. Over the last few months, I have been thinking do I need a large plier based tool. There are some great midsize pliers-based tools and some great 6 inch and shorter pliers. I have two kits that fit int my pocket that has better tools than my Leatherman and weights about the same.
Whether a person needs a multitool to begin with depends a lot on his psychology. I worked in an office that had plenty of side offices. If I had too much down time, I'd grab my Leatherman and start fixing every wobbly table or chair in the building with the pliers and screwdrivers. 🤣 But if you're like most people and just like the aesthetic (whether you're into pretending you need "tactical" gear, or whether you want to virtue signal with your Patagonia gear so you can lie about how much better it is as a company - and by extension, YOU are as a human being), then just get any old cheaper alternative and you'll be fine. Hell, when thru-hiking, I don't even bring it. I just use the Victorinox SD mini. You only need enough of a knife to slice meat and cheese on a hiking trek. 🤣
@@cobbler88 I think quite a few people are in love with the gear not thinking what they use it for. My basic on-person carry is quite minimal. Gerber shard and O light i3E EOS on my key chain. Usually a Swiss army knife in my pocket plus three Midnite Manager (which is the tool I use the most). I am doing a one knife challenge for September and I chose the Farmer X Alox.
I carried a leatherman for most of my adult and teenage life(I’m 28 so to be fair that’s not overly long) they are great tools, but a couple years ago I switched to carrying a pioneer x and Knipex cobra xs and haven’t looked back. I hardly cut wire so I find the cobra pliers way more useful than the leatherman. They get a better grip on larger bolts and pipes than leathermans do. And the pioneer x has all the tools I really need. Though I think my dream Swiss Army knife would be a farmer x with the blade swapped for a file while still keeping the awl. I imagine the file would need to be one sided and tapered to make this possible.
@@MB_EDC I’ve had mine for quite a long time. £40 from cost co. Believe it or not I use to use it to fix my old boss’s glasses as it had a very tiny Philips lol 😂 Also use to use it to strip down barber’s clippers to service them
When I was still working as an HVAC tech I had the "small box" next to my main toolbox. With only a few essential tools it saved a lot of walking back and forth and dragging a heavy case up on the roof. In those days the multitool saw a lot of work but my work clothes were full of tools back then. 😅 The SAK and the small Cobra already solve a lot of problems now. 😊
To be honest, the UK EDC requirement is the biggest factor against leather man for me.. it's an easy decision not to carry one.. That said... If they were legal to have with me all the time, then I'd have to do some serious thinking about if specialized tools were a better option. Nextool make a nice mini sailor that is a nicer option than the dime... If you want a tool with some super snappy mini pliers that can hang off a keyring. Oh.... And those Stanley screwdrivers are possible the most cost effective edc things in the history of the world
@@BreSae 2 things ... I do have a leather man bond and it's a horrible nasty thing that brings me no joy at all ... And secondly, because of the knife laws in the UK, it's of dubious legallity because unless you do a secondary action the blade doesnt fully fold back unless you open the tool. Unfortunately for this argument, the person who I'd be arguing with is some grumpy pc plod who will argue the case with me after he's dragged me to the station, and I'd rather not have that conversation. So, I'm either gonna carry a completely legal SAK/Folder... A nextool non locking multi tool.... Or a completely bladeless tool and and a legal folder instead. Leatherman simply do not make a UK legal edc option (the so called bladeless rebar has a locking awl and a saw) (Btw .. if you are happy that it is legal I'm no lawyer so don't take any legal advice from me and I wish I liked it as much as the wave or the skeleton)
There is the bladeless version of the Gerber mp600 which has a removable saw, so that might be ok... But it's a chonky boy so looks too big for a pocket Carry. But for the price of the rebar, there is the next big thing (?) the roxon flex
@@psionandy I've got the MP600 but as you say it's a bit bulky, plus I just find it awkward using the screwdrivers and other tools, it's off balance then and the pliers head digs into your hand, you can't do right angle pistol grip holds, or have the handles extended almost inline, like on other multitools.
There are many more reasons TO own a leatherman than not to once you take cost out of the equation. I carried a wave every day for 5 years and it was my most used item, now I carry a skeletool every day and it's so useful. SAK's are cool but the fact you can't access the blade one handed is an instant deal breaker. I realize UK knife laws are different to elsewhere.
Showing how much rust on your Stanley tools is a fair advertisement for there tools. Their Fatmax tapes are OK quality but noticeably has gone down hill quickly.
I know this probably wouldn't fly with an Officer, but my good reason for carrying a knife is it's useful when I need it. I can cut a box open, cut cable, tape, cloth, prep food. Saw some small branches around the yard. I can't believe you let your government tell you you can't carry a useful tool. And of all things it's because it's locking (a safety feature)? What a stupid law. One more point... How do they know you have a knife in your pocket that locks? Are they randomly stopping people on the street and searching them?
I like the thought of a multi-tool for the amount of tasks I can use it for. My EDC is Ridge Wallet, Flashlight, Leatherman Arc in a pocket organizer. If I want a slimmer pocket I carry the same wallet and flashlight with a folding knife if I'm not expecting to need the tools I use. From the arc, I use the Knife most, the bottle opener second, and the screwdriver 3rd. I've tried carrying those tools separate but have yet to find them in a size I can fit in the same formfactor. You're right about one thing, it's never the best tool for the job, but it's the tool I have on me and I can use it to get the job done faster than getting the best tool from home. In the same way, my phone isn't a DSLR camera but it's compact and has enough extra functionality that it's worth carrying on me. It's a different mentality for sure, and I'd bet the Law in your country contributes to the convenience of carrying one. It isn't easy to have a tool on you when you need it if the tool is illegal to have without a reason. I bet a lot of people in the UK are constantly running into times where they are away from the house and need a tool, only to realize they now have a reason to carry it. Hopefully there is a way to get those stupid laws repealed.
Great carry brother. The law is a pain. I think many people carry their multi tools in their Rucksack/workbag. Just not on their person. There can be searches but only in places like pubs and night clubs if there is trouble. Mostly it's young men, possibly in groups/gangs that get searched. The law is an inconvenience. It doesn't apply if you are working and need a locking blade.
You need a better Leatherman. Mine has wire stripper and cutter, pliers, three flat blades, Phillips, awl, can opener, serrated knife, and file, diamond sharpener. Did I mention scissors? Invaluable, servicing small equipment in the field. I now use it for my bike rides. It's perfection!
@@milanzigmond7780 questionable legality for UK EDC carry .. you have to open it to fold the blade back in, which means the blade isn't foldable at all times... It is completely legal if you have a good lawful reason to carry it UK law isn't well written at all :(
@@psionandy I agree. I will carry mine at the bottom of my bag in it's pouch with a 4 in Bahco adjustable squeezed in but won't pocket EDC it for that reason. I looked up the OED definition of fold and it does indeed mean flat back on itself, so as you say it isn't immediately foldable at all times. The same also applies to the Micra, as blade length is not a factor, the same as the tiniest keyring Opinel with a ringlock isn't legal.
I won't touch the Bond if - like it used to be - it does not have a locking blade. We had the smaller Leatherman all over the Army in the late 80s/early 90s. A knife blade not locking is not a good thing.
No kidding. They banned guns so they wound up with a stabbing problem. Pretty soon they'll have a choking problem, then they'll have to tell people they can't have hands or something lol.
@DavidH373 And it sounds like people are encouraged to rat out their fellow man, fostering mistrust among people who otherwise would get on or (gasp!) unite. That's North Korea/Nazi Germany government tactics
#1 reason is they are overpriced..so many more options ..lol so many people using their leather man to build houses everyday and pull out 78 nails in 9 seconds😅 lol doubtful.. I carry a SAK and it’s great fir my needs as I’m not building log cabins or taking apart space shuttles 😂 great video Brother
I build log cabins and space shuttles every second day, my Leatherman surge and Victorinox Swisstool with their accessories come in handy! On every other day I whittle out on the front verandah whilst smoking a pipe! True story....

I feel the same. For my lifestyle, a good SAK is plenty. I lean more toward a Tinker Deluxe or a Swisschamp.
Both great choices - although I have never carried anything above a 5 layer SAK. I am enjoing the Farmer X - halfway through my September challenge..
A good multitool like a knife or firearm. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it wave carrier 10 years no regrets

You don't feel the weight, it's on the bike and it's more of a just incase, nice that it's there thing. I get the impression the larger multitools are sort of the British army clasp knife of the 21st century, handy in a military context, hunting, things like that.
I like the Dime. Haven't used it much. I like to take three Topeka Ratchet DX cycling.
really good work, thanks & regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Many thanks!
Sounds like a great kit. I have the Topeak ratchet rocket lite for cycling
@@MB_EDC not my video only same set 😉 ua-cam.com/video/HAnrr5pNc7g/v-deo.htmlsi=Ykro5RvH0zqyeMuJ
Nice looking mini ratchet kit
I find this very interesting because I came to the same conclusion about a month ago. It is all about philosophy of use. If what you need is set of tools for field expedient use I think some kind of Swiss Army knife is the way to go.
Great Minds Think Alike!!!!
Great video, much enjoyed watching. 😁 I only own 2 Leatherman's and of the 2, I really only ever carry 1; my Charge TTi+. However, I carry my Vcitorinox Spirit X daily. 👍Take care my friend and Cheers!
Thanks Dave... I'd love the Spirit X but it has locking blades so I can't EDC it here in the UK. 🙁
Leatherman surge with bit kits and ratchet driver good bit of kit i say
I don't disagree.. It's just not something that I need and it's expensive.
I say I agree cause that's exactly what I have! 😂 I also have a Victorinox Swisstool MX Clip with all of the accessories. Love them both! 👍
@@billybunter3753 love my surge with bit kits and ratchet driver yeah buddy
👍
I use my Wave every day. My wife makes fun of me for carrying it all the time but every time we have gone out and i left it at home there has been a issue i needed it.. 1 of the 3 times we actually got stranded in my truck.. and she had a cheap multitool that saved the day n her purse
I think it maybe a better Truck carry than a personal carry - but that's just my view...
Meanwhile, I've never, not even once, needed a multitool.
@@JosephAllen-d2e I use my Swiss Army Knife quite a lot. That's in my pocket. I usually have a mini toolkit in my car or workbag...
It all depends on if you need pliers (and cutters) when out and about...I don't. I do appreciate that they work for some people...
I disagree, but To each their own. I love the Arc. I ALSO CARRY A Sak ranger.
No problem. I'm glad you love it... Nothing wrong with something that brings you joy. The Ranger is awesome!!!
$20 work pro multi tool saves me a lot of time at work and home. I use it at least once a day.
Great carry.....
Whether a person needs a multitool to begin with depends a lot on his psychology. I worked in an office that had plenty of side offices. If I had too much down time, I'd grab my Leatherman and start fixing every wobbly table or chair in the building with the pliers and screwdrivers. 🤣
But if you're like most people and just like the aesthetic (whether you're into pretending you need "tactical" gear, or whether you want to virtue signal with your Patagonia gear so you can lie about how much better it is as a company - and by extension, YOU are as a human being), then just get any old cheaper alternative and you'll be fine.
Great Combination!!!! I love my Pioneer X by the way....
I have a leatherman surge and it’s used a lot. Obviously more so when it was legal to carry.
Hey Will! Yes they can be useful... Just not really for me...
@@MB_EDC I’ve had mine for quite a long time. £40 from cost co. Believe it or not I use to use it to fix my old boss’s glasses as it had a very tiny Philips lol 😂
Also use to use it to strip down barber’s clippers to service them
@willwilson2502 Always handy to be able to fix stuff for the boss
When I was still working as an HVAC tech I had the "small box" next to my main toolbox. With only a few essential tools it saved a lot of walking back and forth and dragging a heavy case up on the roof. In those days the multitool saw a lot of work but my work clothes were full of tools back then. 😅 The SAK and the small Cobra already solve a lot of problems now. 😊
@rolf2721 Thanks! It's interesting how few tools are actually needed....
Oh.... And those Stanley screwdrivers are possible the most cost effective edc things in the history of the world
I am always on the lookout for good budget EDC items.
Get the leatherman bond its legal in the UK or get the knifles rebar, no knife but scissors. Also legal in UK :p
Leatherman simply do not make a UK legal edc option (the so called bladeless rebar has a locking awl and a saw)
(Btw .. if you are happy that it is legal I'm no lawyer so don't take any legal advice from me and I wish I liked it as much as the wave or the skeleton)
TBH. These are just the reasons I don't need to carry a Leatherman. I was interested in sparking done discussion!
Personally I carry a dedicated knife anyways with better steel and a locking blade so Im not affected by that
👍
Showing how much rust on your Stanley tools is a fair advertisement for there tools. Their Fatmax tapes are OK quality but noticeably has gone down hill quickly.
I agree about dinner off the Stanley tapes. They don't seem as robust as they used to be...
@DavidH373 great carry
You can't bring a Leatherman if you're putting together a bug-out bag. It just fills room you could use to pack your third firearm or sixth knife. 🤣
Good point!
And if your gun needs some work? Pliers come in handy for that!
@xiaodingjones1554 Ib one it might. I'm from the UK. Most people don't have guns here...
Yeah, I just don't find I like Leatherman much. Much prefer SAKs.
Yep... Same here...
It's perfect for you and your needs....
Letherman bond cost £50 and it is UK legal.
@@milanzigmond7780 questionable legality for UK EDC carry .. you have to open it to fold the blade back in, which means the blade isn't foldable at all times...
It is completely legal if you have a good lawful reason to carry it
UK law isn't well written at all :(
@@psionandy I agree.
Agreed...
I won't touch the Bond if - like it used to be - it does not have a locking blade. We had the smaller Leatherman all over the Army in the late 80s/early 90s. A knife blade not locking is not a good thing.
@@MB_EDC Try a Knifeless Rebar.
Every time I see a knife vid from someone in UK, it sounds more and more like North Korea.
I take it you've never been to the UK.
There is not a huge knife problem. It's mainly youth gangs. The UK is a very safe place to live.
I don't know where you heard that. It is not like that here.
Can’t hear your audio at times
Sorry about that - I thought I had got the levels right.......
#1 reason is they are overpriced..so many more options ..lol so many people using their leather man to build houses everyday and pull out 78 nails in 9 seconds😅 lol doubtful.. I carry a SAK and it’s great fir my needs as I’m not building log cabins or taking apart space shuttles 😂
great video Brother
Thanks! I just think I could buy several SAKs and still have change to buy a pair of pliers!!
@@MB_EDC seriously
😁
I build log cabins and space shuttles every second day, my Leatherman surge and Victorinox Swisstool with their accessories come in handy! On every other day I whittle out on the front verandah whilst smoking a pipe! True story....
