@@ToolsElectroDIY that’s right! I had a P-2 that I liked also for the same reasons, but was lacking a few or the other tools. Unfortunately I left it on the bumper of my truck! Oops!
I've noticed that no one ever mentions the lanyard loop hidden in the saw blade slot of the wave+. That's interesting. It's not a very often used feature but in the winter it's handy for cold hands.
I don't have much use for it, but I guarantee I'll put something on it next time I'm camping or fishing. No need for my Wave to fall to the bottom of a lake or swamp.
I sadly lost my Wave when I put it down during a temporary repair while I was in a rush..drove off and when I realised it wasn’t there I went back and looked where I’d parked and it was gone. So need to replace it. Was just going to get another but a guy at work had a Surge which has made me think about that instead… both are great but the Surge definitely seems heavier duty and I love the replaceable blades etc.. thanks for the review!..
Ya it looks like it is better if you work in a shop or something. I'm just working in a music studio and use my Wave+ for every day stuff so the smaller size is perfect.
I am women I bought the Surge for my hiking and treking. But The Surge is so big and bulky! It weights 350 grams alone and 588 grams witht bit kit and with ratchet driwer. I prefer to left Surge at home and hike with my Victorinox Handyman. Surge's scissors is so big and bulky- not for finger nails. For finger nails best used is Victorinox scissors. The only plus of Surge is changeable saw. You can change it to Leatherman's file or to much longer Bosch T saw for wood, metal or for ceramic, or for plastic.
I kinda wish Leatherman would do a Surge XL... 12oz - 12.5oz is no big deal if your carrying it on a sheath. The weight issue is way over blown... You can tell some people haven't ever walked around with a 40+lb tool belt before. 12oz is not bad at all. I really like the Bosch T-shank adapter. I use it almost as much as the blade & pliers... The only thing I would add is a single bevel scraper. I really like the Surge platform
Literally have a surge in my pocket daily cause its lighter than carrying Knipex Cobras, Side cutters, wire strippers, knife, long nose pliers, scissors
I got me a Wave+ because of the weight. And because I don't use it on any "heavy duty" stuff. On your Surge you see why the black color is kind of stupid. As soon you start using your tool the black "color" wears quickly off. As the manufacturing quality at Leatherman can be better you see the silver scratches on your pliers. I would always recommend the silver multitool (not just from Leatherman) as the black stuf is always wearing off. Even on your fingers. A friend of me has a Surge. He is using it more for loosening bolts and stuff...so more heavy duty. He is also very happy with his.
Great Vid! I have a Black and a Silver Surge and they're outstanding. Nonetheless, I often reach for my Charge Titanium. The Wave+ seems nearly identical to the Charge TI with primary differences being the Charge's Titanium scales and the Wave+'s disc like main tool pivots.
Have had a basic Sidekick mode for a long time. It's cool, but wanted to upgrade. I bought both the Wave+ and the Surge at the same time because they were on sale. Haven't used them yet, but I like the features of both tools. Thanks for showing them along with the accessories--I'm interested in adding those.
I have both. Initially, i bought the wave+, while attempting to twist out a tight knot, the left plier nose broke off. Obviously, that's not a desired result for this expensive tool. I went ahead and purchased the heavy duty Surge. Ive since had the wave+ sent in for assessment and the company believed that welding the broken bit back on was the way to go. I guess their pliers are expected to break easily. Keep that in mind. Maybe dont use the pliers on second thought. Cheers
I bought the Surge. If i carry it, i toss it i to my sling bag or backpack, so it's not an EDC. It has the right number of tools, and i also bought their proprietary bit kit so i have another 20 bits. Only wish Leatherman installed the eye glass screwdriver holder into the main tool pack.
I've been carrying a Leatherman sidekick since 2016 & I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade but I have needs for it. All the tools have to lock open and I need a pocket clip
The Surge definitely goes in any go bag. But unless you sport a 20lb capacity battle belt everyday, then the wave is the edc winner. I love my surge, but man oh man when I put my wave on the belt and forget it’s there until I need it, that’s a great tool.
Man I wish they made the oht with that replaceable saw. I'd happily do away with the bottle opener or one of the redundant flatheads. I'm having serious decision making problems lmao 🤣 but I do apartment maintenance on 100 apartments and do rc car repairs on the weekends at the local hobbyshop. So I would seriously put on to so good use lol.
Imagine having a slot only for the rachet bit driver instead of the two flat driver and on the other side are the awl and can opener and maybe the eyeglass repair. Just imagine that leatherman.
I love surge. But is too heavy unless u use a belt pouch then is ok. But i carry my wave/curl/bond just like i carry my pocket knives. But i cant lie, surge is the best for heavy use.
If you need a wood saw only for dry (dead) wood, not on regular basis and only for a small section, Wave is better. But on Surge one can equip longer and more aggresive tshank woodsaws or metal saw or even kriss blade for linoleum and rubber.
@@assordante2205 of course, when you go with your car or a backpack or anything similar. its not the way im using it, but for others it might be better.
The only cons on the Surge is that it is too big to be carried in a pocket. Only practical way to carry it is in a sturdy holster... which may be a bit awkward if you're generally in an urban setting.
If leathermen included a 1/4 bit holder for either of these I'd be instantly sold the fact you have to bring and buy additional tools defeats the purpose of a multitool but leathermen is the best quality
1/4 bit holder would make it perfect indeed.. And actually, Victorinox is the best quality for a multitool. From own experience and I also think almost every reviewer comparing the two hands it to Victorinox in terms of quality. That said, I’d still have the Leatherman because I like some of the tools, mainly blades, more. But if it’s just quality you want, go Victorinox
It's not the best quality, and unfortunately like all companies do eventually, they're resting on their name and past and the quality has been dropping. Victorinox quality and engineering is still far superior and they're an exception to the rule, even after a century. They also have a lifetime warranty and are a company that will still be around to honor it. Leatherman can openers, scissors and some of their other tools are barely usable garbage that they just throw on there as an afterthought to con you into thinking you're getting more for your money. There are budget multi-tools made in China with better scissors than what Leatherman gives you.

No nonsense intro, no 5 minutes of talking about the history of the tool. Just a nice well put video, straight to the point. Thank you!
Thanks for your support!
finally, a review with someone that actually uses his tools!
Thanks! Yes I do.
I have both but prefer the Wave because I tend to carry it more often. The Surge pretty much lives in my back pack.
Thanks for sharing your experience! More compact, more likely to get used!

As a tradesman I have always carried the surge since its release. My most prized tool ever.
good to know, thanks!
The thing is the parts on any of these Leathermans are replaceable. Pretty awesome
True. But usually you need to send it back to the factory for replacements. DIY work would be hard.
Right I was about to get a crunch but I think I'm going to get one of this for that reason. Can also swap with modifications
It's the surge for me. Because of the better bigger scissors
Agree
Scissors on multi tools are junk. Better off getting a real pair of scissors and carrying it in your bag
The Surge definitely goes in any go bag. But unless you sport a 20lb capacity battle belt everyday, then the wave is the edc winner. I love my surge, but man oh man when I put my wave on the belt and forget it’s there until I need it, that’s a great tool.
yes it's too heavy
Which one is more handy for a maintenance/hvac technician?
Surge.
@@ToolsElectroDIY may i ask what makes that one the better option?
Wave for me. I've used them for 20 years + (scissors are rubbish though).

I’ve had same results ,the sissors and can opener are trash ,compared to Victorinox.

Dude it’s not a bottle opener, it’s a can opener… and they’re not redundant drivers, one is a chisel/pry tool and the other is a screwdriver
@SxxyCoy either way it still need the replaceable t shank saw. You can even get the file to put in the holder so it can just go there then
@@SxxyCoy got it
Same here as far as trying to decide which one to get😫😅. Which one did you end up getting? And are you happy with it? Any regrets?

In a normal plier the wire cutters are not replaceable! How cool this device is? 1000%
Exactly

it's the weight. wave plus for me
I can see why
If you carry your wave like I do every day, the belt clip is a must
Yes, I got the clips for both Wave and Surge :)
Ill take the leatherman surge
Ok
will the blade cut? like imagine a boulder falling on my arm?
it cuts clean, very sharp!
I have used my surge as a hammer many times lol

If they replaced the eyeglass screwdriver with an awl, I'd find it better off. Hence why I carry the Victorinox Pioneer as my edc. Lol

Ok
Leatherman does NOT provide lifetime warranty:
I have heard that 25 years is the warranty for Leatherman.
Victorinox provides lifetime warranty.
yes. 25 years
Most people (speaking for myself) will lose almost any multi tool in much less than 25 years, so I'm not worried.
even if you run out the warranty and have to buy a new one... thats still only buying it twice in a lifetime basically.
Great review thanks!

Surge. You simply can't get as much leverage on the wave.
