    Good stuff. I'm staying with family abroad and need to sharpen their knives (which have been through hell since my grandfather doesn't know how to sharpen, and thinks banging knives against each other like a bad imitation of a tv chef is enough) but it's impossible to find good stones locally so I bit the bullet and ordered this. Probably not near as amazing as the high end stuff but it looks like it should definitely do the job. Hopefully it'll hold up alright with a set of knives.

    Both are fantastic knives with exceptional design and build quality. I agree about the lanyard loop. A keychain ring on what is essentially a full sized pocket knife seems useless and can cut a hole in a pocket with repeated use.

    How many times have you actually used the pruning blade for pruning? My guess is zip, since you obviously didn't know what it was. I have issues with your critiques, not least because I think you review on perception, not actual usage experience. There's no logic to denigrating a model based on an additional function with minimal increase in size unless you're a) and idiot or b) come into an eval with a bias. When you choose to do reviews without preemptive (and dipshit) bias... lemme know. Then I might actually view your channel without a lens that tells me "This guy is a knucklehead couch-comfort"

      Definitely better dry....

  • @kvernesdotten
    @kvernesdotten 5 днів тому

    After trying a bunch of different ones, I kinda prefer cheaper ones. Like, not the absolute worst ones, but a step up from that I think is very good value. The more expensive ones have much better grit consistency, diamonds better adheres to the substrate and all that, but they all wear out eventually regardless and I just feel like the mid-tier ones are better value because of that. I would absolutely recommend getting one of those adjustable stone holders though, since they work with any stone and they are much less in the way of your hand/handle than these boxes. How do you feel about diamond vs waterstone when it comes to being messy though? I really feel like its just trading one type of messy for another since dry grinding doesnt have any slurry going all over the place, but they do produce alot of steel and graphite dust going everywhere and is very bad to breathe in. I remember you saying you had some trouble raising a burr, its really nice to see how fast you got one on this stone! I have a tip for getting rid of it again though, once you have raised a burr on both sides then you know you have completely apexed. At that point, try going alternating stropping (edge trailing) passes with very light pressure (for a kitchen knife id say the weight of the knife, but the one you used is obviously a bit lighter) until you no longer feel the burr. A good visualization is thinking that you are trying to wipe the burr off on the stone. I like to do this between every stone because it gives very predictable and consistent results. I really like seeing the progression thats happening on this channel though, its really fun to see and I feel invested now haha

      Thanks for your time and tips. I’m still learning all the time and appreciate you coming with me in the journey. I still lookbto channels like @OUTDOORS55 as the experts… I think I was using too high a grit and not enough pressure - so I want forming a burr. That seems to be fixed now…😁

    actually, I bought Farmer X because of your recommendation and I absolutely like it. Wear it on my shoulder bag so I don't notice it's weight. Also, I have Knipex Cobra XS on my shoulder bag, I think it's an ultimate combination of compact edc tools. Also in case if I wanna wear it on my pants - I bought titanium pocket clip and the eyelid is not bothering me, it would be worse for me without an option to carry it on my pocket with a clip.

    Pairing is the key. If you carry a Classic or even better a MiniChamp, you are good with more or less any Alox model. My fav is the Army 7 of course, as I am a total fan of hooked blades. And I feel also better with a knife which comes with 2 blades ... ;-) That said, one of the main reasons why I do not really like the Farmer X is the key ring. This construction really hurts my hand when I want to use the knife. I'm not sure why but I don't have these problems with standard Cellidor Victorinox models, it happens only with the Alox key rings (resp. the fixture of the ring).

      @@MB_EDC Yes but the rounded blade makes it nice for getting out peanut butter, jam and honey from a glass but makes it impossible to make a nice hole ... so unluckily, it is nothing for me as I am on diet but still carving ... 🤣🤣🤣 The first knive which I've got in my life came from my grandfather before I even went to school, has had two blades with two extra sharp tips ... and I've got it with a heap of band-aids. Which were highly required during the first weeks, of course. But I've no idea why a rounded blade should be much better for kids ... I always cut myself but never got a hurt from the tip 😁

    Easily my favourite SAK. As a community volunteer looking after gardens, paths and other public spaces, this compact little knife lives in my pocket. The hawksbill is the most useful pruning blade and the nice thick stock of the main blade is just superb. My only real gripe is that the saw is a little flimsy in comparison to the other blades and really needs a liner lock or something to use it safely.

    • @MB_EDC
      @MB_EDC 9 днів тому

      Glad you like it. I get on OK with the saw, but you definitely have to consider how best to use it to avoid it closing. It helps that it cuts on the push and pull.

    I carry a knife less rebar literally every day and every single tool in it gets used regularly (home and at work). I also carry a small folding knife and to be honest, it gets used maybe once or twice a month. Get a knife less rebar if the knife is the problem, go out of your way to use it as much as possible for the first week or 2 and you’ll either be lost without it or a plier multitool just isn’t for you.

    Thanks for the video 😊 I own the three “regular” Alox and I use them on a daily basis. The Bantam - Classic combo is my go-to for work (office environment). At home I have the Alox Swiss Army 2 in my pocket for everything: fruits, packages, little works around the house. I own more Alox: Minichamp, Cadet, Pioneer X (orange, yellow and storm grey versions), Farmer X and Hunter Pro orange. I have also some classic red models and a Swisstool Spirit X. Along with my wife and daughter, I think there are 20 or 21 SAKs at home 😊 I really love the Alox models, they are more robust and more elegant at the same time than the celidor ones. I make a rotation to carry and use all of them.

    I look forward to more bladeless models. People have gotten weirded out pretty much every time I have deployed an SAK blade in public, even a Classic SD, and no I'm not joking! So I'd probably choose a good bladeless model (even just swapping the blade for scissors in most current models would be good) if it helped reassure people. It's not a big sacrifice. We can grumpily moan about this culture shift where people see all blades as instruments of violence, instead of as utilitarian tools, but hey, I can't blame them. We have a knife crime problem, and we're hardly skinning rabbits out here in modern-day urban UK so it's hard for the uninitiated to see any reason to want to carry a blade.
