    To think, a few months back you almost never bought one. We do forget how austere the lives of our parents, grandparents and great grand parents had it, that's magnified many times over when looking at current generations who are often so vocal in criticising our ancesters who did much so more with so much less and we've done them a diservice when failing to remind them of that.

      It is the one thing that bothers me about my collection of about 40 knives now..... I can only ever carry a couple and it seems excessive. I might start a programme of one in and one out to keep the numbers down....

    Excellent choice! I've been a fan of this pattern since Victorinox discontinued their non-serrated one-hand Trekker. My wife got me one for my birthday last week, and it's been in my pocket ever since. I wish it had tweezers like the celluloid scale models but wouldn't give up the alox scales to make it happen. The scissors are awfully handy too.

      It’s hard to beat the Farmer X as a pocket carry. I bought my sons the European version of the Trekker with the half serrated blade. They love it.

    I carried a Farmer X for all of September for the challenge and never really missed much else. There was one time I had to go grab a pair of pliers and wouldn't have with my Skeletool but that was only one time in a whole month. I also really do appreciate the Farmer X/Fieldmaster/Huntsman/S17 set of tools as well it's close to perfect

    I do carry my farmer X every day. I don't use it every but that's because it's not the only SAK I carry every day. I have an Alox soldier 2 and I do use it several times a day. It's the pruning blade that I use the most, and then the scissors. I do use the main blade on the soldier 2 and that helps keep my farmer X in great condition. I think the main blade is like new. Two knives is better than one. Or 2 is 1.
    9:09 that looks very similar to the Oyster knife they give out when you order oysters. The oyster knife doesn't fold. And its not a sheeps foot blade but they do look similar.

    • @MB_EDC
      @MB_EDC  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for your comment! I just got the Army 2 last week, but haven’t carried it yet. That sounds like a great combination with those 2 SAKs! I think that having a good pair of knives that complement each other is the way forward! The Taylor’s Eye Witness knife is a very traditional Sheffield-made knife. I haven’t carried it much, but will be for all of October. I’ll report back at the end of the month on how it’s done.

    • @user-yx2ff3mv2q
      @user-yx2ff3mv2q 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MB_EDC the best thing about the SAK is that they are very inoffensive. You can take one from your pocket no one gives it a second thought, you can hand it over to someone else to use without any issue. Even though I carry 3 knives I certainly don't think of myself as someone who carries a knife, if you know what I mean. I've bought everyone I know an SKA, they make excellent presents. The 3rd SAK I carry is a tiny single blade with a nail file which I filed down and turned it into a lock pick. It fits into the same leather belt pouch as the Farmer X.

    • @MB_EDC
      @MB_EDC  2 місяці тому +1

      @user-yx2ff3mv2q Agree 100%. Never had a problem using any of my SAKs in public. Like the idea of the lock pick. This is something I need to look into.

    • @user-yx2ff3mv2q
      @user-yx2ff3mv2q 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MB_EDC lock noob here on UA-cam gave me the idea when he took a small blade in a keyring and turned it into a lock pick. I wasn't able to get the keyring he used but I was able to buy the smallest SAK and turned the file on it into a working lock pick. I hardly notice it in with the Farmer but I just have to be mindful of it so I don't lose it. I put a fishing swivel onto the split ring. That just hangs out of the leather pouch similar to the little lanyard I have on the Farmer. I was able to use an ordinary metal file to file the nail file on the SAK.

    • @MB_EDC
      @MB_EDC  2 місяці тому +1

      @@user-yx2ff3mv2q I think I’ll get myself a lock pick set and teach myself (with help from YT!) how to pick locks…then work out the best way to carry a lock pick without it being obvious what it is. I think that lock picking is a key life skill to have!

    This was a fun one. My one knife for September was a free P2 leatherman. In fairness, I also carry a jetsetter with a pen scale (not a knife!) and with the exception of one day where I wore particularly light pants and the leatherman was too heavy so I carried a mini bugout, I made it through the challenge. I find it particularly funny because, as you note about old timers having only one knife, I carried a victorinox spartan forever and then a gerber folder forever and never thought twice about needing anything else until I got into the hobby. 😂

    Hey Mark 👊🏼
    For years, I only ever carried one knife, apart from when I was 11-14yrs old, when I first got into EDC with Victorinox (Ended up with 5), Maglight torch, notebook, my survival tin with it's Chinese brass & wood knife.
    I will find this 'one knife challenge, no problem, as an ex. RE soldier 😉 and I'll take part over this month, buddy 💪🏼

    Love alox knives, premium quality knives at modest prices but imo the alox sd is a little too small (too thin). When I lost mine I replaced it with a Rambler and popped on some cheap aliex titanium scales to make something a little more substantial and ergonomic. (with the bonus that you get to keep the tweezers and tooth pick).

      @@MB_EDC It works a treat in terms of improving the look and ergonimics of SDs etc. I'm less impressed with the effect it had on a Spartan, it made it feel unnecessarily heavy. It's a worthwhile excersise...when doing so, JB Weld Original Cold-Weld is your friend

    Interesting. Great challenge. How do you feel about the Farmer models? I ground off protruding keyring housing as it's so uncomfortable. Also my saw is significantly less 'bitey/ or 'grippy' than other Victorinox I own...Maybe I got a duff one? Victorinox scissors are second to none consistently though, eh?

    • @MB_EDC
      @MB_EDC  2 місяці тому +1

      @@snesleywipessqueegeeservices I think that both of the Farmer models are excellent. The eyelet is a hotspot and seems worse than other Victorinox models. After carrying itt for a month I was used to it and in fact it does help you to orient the knife just by touch.

    If you are going to carry only one knife, a muti tool, a SAK, or Camping pocket knife is a must. It should minimally have a main blade, pry tool/driver, can opener, and an awl.
    I try to carry atleast 3 knives for edc.
    1.) Multi tool (that could be a SAK, Camp knife, or "Leatherman type". I rarely resort to "Leatherman type" because I carry a Knipex pliers and do not need pliers.
    2.) Modern folder main blade knife. This would be a one hand open knife I can use for anything when I need to access a knife quickly or to complete any task, especially tasks that I would not do with a "collectable" or an expensive knife.
    3.) Traditional folder. A knife dedicated for food processing or very fine detailed work. Food processing are usually easy tasks for blades and do nut dull the blade fast. So it is always sharp to complete detail work.
