- This is the second in my series of MasterClass videos on Surface Builder. In this video we take a look at the bulk midi function and how to record MIDI events to a button object. We also take a deep dive into scenes and hidden objects as well as surface customization.
We take a look at the new Chord Strip objects and associated features added in 1.01 as well as the new queued audio feature and object locking coming in 1.02.

There you go, man, you did it… I now have the capability of rhythm guitar accompaniments of different sections of a song for me to play over, and bringing them in as needed. Hopefully, they can be set to loop until I want to cue up a different one, and also, hopefully, they will change from one to the other instantly so there’s no time lag between. I can do this with an app called Quantiloop, but it’s not AU, and it would be unwieldy to use for other reasons. I can also do it with the Boomerang 3 looper, but since it doesn’t store tracks, I have to first play in all the sections I want to jam over… BIG thanks, Paul; this is fantastic…

This app is looking great, Paul. I've compared it to a couple others which are more and less sophisticated, and for me this hits a sweet spot. It's powerful enough to do some things quickly and easily, but it's not weighed down by a vast array of options and doesn't require spending hours reading a manual or watching videos to make something simple. I've got a lot of feedback, but I'm holding off for most of it until I use it more. One small request that I would make now is to add some friendly info in the bulk midi list, which only shows hex values. I can read them but it would be easier on the eyes to have an option to show something like A2, Eb3, or CC1, CC2, etc., but there may be a better way to handle that, so I'm open to any input from you or other users out there.
When you click on any command in the list it is expanded to the items on the right so it can be read easily without hving to decode hex values. The reason I compact it down is so that you can be identified when using the MIDI monitor.
I see the addition of the MIDI note name during entry in version 1.02 - very helpful. Thanks
Please ad the posibility of sincronice the buttons with the tempo of the project. If click a button in the midle of the beat, the button will change at the start of the next beat.
Yeah, I've not added true synchroinization with the beat because its practically imporssible with pure MIDI, but possible under AUv3. I will be adding some form of sync, but for now just making sure your buffer size is small (i.e. 256 or less) will help. The next version 1.02 will have an option in Settings called Sync Audio Clips to Beat.
Brilliant app. Using Surface Builder how can I make Rozzetta Scaler move an Octave up or Down or change key? I have built a knob and limited its min and max, using non continous I am able to get it to change in semitones or octaves but I want more define defintions in the ticks. Can this be achieved using a combo of Steeper object and knob? Cheers and many thanks for all your wonderful works.
If I had a penny for the number of questions people ask about other developers apps I would be rich lol To be honest I don't know this app so have no idea. Glad you like the app though, it will continue to get better release by release.
What I want to do with this app is send midi from my iPad to my computer (Mac mini). The problem, I think is connecting two midi hosts. I think I need to buy a second audio interface and then connect the midi out of my iPad audio interface to the midi in on my computer audio interface. Perhaps there’s a blue tooth solution that wouldn’t require me spending money. Suggestions??
It can be done using MIDI network sessions, but this is far beyond what I can explain here. Checkout a program on your Mac called Audio MIDI Setup.
