7:50 VP44 sensor wire connector took me a half hour and its nearly smashed to bits. There are two tabs that you need to push down, the easy one that you can see and another one on the back side. Now that it's off, I see what you meant by squeeze them together. 10 hours into it and the vp44 is loose, but I haven't gotten it off.
Hope to see it running in the next video, really looking forward to it. And just a side note, by watching the video when the pump first gave out, it actually was the electronics that failed, if the mechanics in the pump failed (mostly caused by lack of fuel), the motor would start loping like it was about to stall out.
Great video! Quick tip on turning the engine over by hand; the alternator nut is the easiest way I found. Should be 13/16" socket. (don't quote me on that size)
Tork Tool CGP-010 is what I used but there are more generic pullers that work also. That company makes great Cummins specific tools. It’ll also pull P-pumps and VE pumps.
ParodoXz, I checked my 5.9 seems like it's airlocked. I loosened the top fuel lines and #2 is not shooting desiel. Do you think it is the VP44?, I did replace a new fuel pumpon the 2001.
when you put the key back in paint it a bright color so u can see it better. if the keys off just a little bit. it will cause a hard start about every ten starts. Also the plastic thingy u called it lol. that's the crank case filter and vent for the engine. the hose goes into the bottle down on the front. take the bottle and make the hose longer. when the bottle because full the fan will pick up the oil and sling it everywhere.
The round thing on the front of the motor is the crankcase breather. It has a steel mesh on the inside to condense the oil droplets and let that oil go back into the crankcase.
That notch on your timing cover is to know when your engine is as top dead center and also that cap you unscrewed is called your crank case vent filter.
Since you are in there you should rebuild your vacuum pump and replace the sensor behind the vp. I don't recall which one is on your model of truck. If you really feel ambitious, you could change out your tappet cover gasket. Just a thought to save some time on down the road.
Y'all are both right, I probably should replace it now. But its not giving me any problems and its not to hard to take this stuff apart. So I will just wait for now
I'm in the process of pulling my motor and trans. Clutch came loose so I'm just going to make my motor sit lower, rebuild my turbos, and possibly trans.
I have a question for your headlight where did you get your retainer for them cause I have the same headlight as you and mine didn't come with any and my old retainers did not fit the new headlights
TOXIC DIESEL I just got these off of Ebay for like $150 Man, all the bulbs I've bought seem to fit fine , just have to twist and turn for them to line up straight
Phil Lizzi Yes, if your FASS bypasses the stock fuel filter like mine does. But like most people, I keep mine in, just in case I ever need it, it doesn't weigh much, so no need to drop it for weight reduction purposes
I'm waiting on the mechanic to call me back with the prognosis on my 01 Cummins. Pretty sure I'll be having to replace the VP 44 also. I also have the wire tap for my chip and I'm seeing that Industrial injection will void the warranty if we use the wire tap. Not sure what I will do about that but I'm not giving up any HP at this time, what will you do?
Scott Brizendine I plan on leaving the vp44 un-tapped for at least a couple weeks until I know for sure that the vp44 isn't faulty from factory. Then I will decide what I wanna do, will use stealth cover if I do decide to tap it
Upon further reading I have discovered that the Hot Rod VP 44 did not have this caption in the description only the 235 and 245 HP models. Look forward to your next video.
hey paradox, when you installed your fass 150, did you install a draw straw or sump? i was thinking on either getting a fass 150 or airdog 150 any advice?
Kamil Tecza The FASS is actually the only thing I haven't installed myself. But no, I didn't get a sump. My brother has the air dog and did have to get a sump
hey man i may be a little late but while your in there with the truck apart, actually you can do it whenever, but you should look into to doing the kdp aka killer dowel pin. it's a cheap and easy fix and major life saver. the kdp is a dowel pin in the timing case that was used to center the case and it can come loose, when that happens the pin drops out and wipes out all the timing gears amongst other things. it affects all 5.9's 89-02. Cummins didn't fix it until 03 when the common rails came out.
ParoDoXz kdp only effects 12 valves. even though I have installed the kit in the 24 valves. built and raced a lot of em and never seen it kill a 24 valve....but it's the 12 valves worst enemy. just my experience and opinion haha.
Cummins Freak01 I've talked to a few people who had it happen to theirs. it still effects the 98 to 02's. Cummins tabbed it from the factory on the 03 and up 24's. if the manufacturer saw it necessary to do from the factory clearly it was a prevalent issue. I tabbed it on my old 12v and I'm gonna do my 24v. why take the chance on a know problem. a couple bucks and a couple hours, or let it ride and possibly lose a motor.
transamfan81 like I said. I've done it to almost every 24v if worked on just as insurance. personally I've just never seen it kill a 24v....not saying its not impossible by the way. I've seen it kill way to many 12 valves though. like I said...it's not a bad idea, just not as concerning.
So that puke tube. What is that? I have had my cummins for a little under a year now and everybody always asks me what that is and i can never give them the anwser. Is it just for extra oil to drain or particles in my motor or what?
Forgot to mention, if I do have to replace the VP44, should I get a bigger horse power or stock, I eventually want to go bigger but not sure if o can run one with more horse power for now till I upgrade the rest later on, Do you also happen to know what size the stock VP44 is for our type of VP44?
Do yourself a big favor and change your tapper cover gasket while the VP is out. I did mine at 170 K, the gasket was so brittle I could snap it like a twig. If that gasket goes oil will spew out of there in a hurry. I got a Felpro gasket for less than 20 bucks. The only other component you have to remove to replace the gasket is the fuel filter assembly and ECM. You'll see the 6 bolts clear as a bell to remove the cover. Please do it man! A piece of mind goes a long way!
Ya i strongly recommend that to him as well as mine was in same condition around 170k when i had put new vp44 on also but he says his is not leaking and neither was mine for that matter but like you said it was matter time before it will as mine was in bad shape but he going to leave it along I guess some have to learn the hard way
ParoDoXz LOL where not trying not bust your chops to bad but you won't regret not replacing it i understand sometimes when things are not broke don't fix them but this one worth replacing even if not leaking as gasket do eventually deteriorate and ya be seeing bucket of oil leaking eventually which no fun cause have tear all down again just replace a simple gasket.
Whew...GOOD CALL! You won't regret it! Oh yeah BTW not trying to bust your chops either, Just trying to look after a Cummins Brother! Another consideration would be the camshaft position sensor...the one looking right at ya just to the right of your VP44. Very good access with the injection pump out of the way.
Im gonna let it ride for at least a couple weeks without tapping it at all just to see how it rides and make sure i have no problems with the new vp44 first. Then ill probably tap it with a stealth cover
Crankcase Breather Valve...if you google "Mopar1973man crankcase vent mod" he has a pretty good mod where you reroute the tube down the rear of the block to prevent oil getting all over the front of your bay. He reroutes it with pvc pipe and it seems to work pretty well.
Love the truck man.... just recently came across your channel and I like what I'm seeing so far...
Thanks bro! I really appreciate that!

Grayson Reichert Thanks man me too!
Great video!
Quick tip on turning the engine over by hand; the alternator nut is the easiest way I found. Should be 13/16" socket. (don't quote me on that size)
Its a 15/16", And either way works man, theres a 1,000 ways to skin a cat haha
Absolutely.
Awesome video for such a common issue. Thanks man.
That truck is gorgeous
Aaron S Thank you!
Hi!
Where can I get that round tool, like a puller, that you used to push the VP 44 pump back away from the gear or pulley? Thanks!!
Tork Tool CGP-010 is what I used but there are more generic pullers that work also. That company makes great Cummins specific tools. It’ll also pull P-pumps and VE pumps.
Love your videos your one of my favorite channels
Thanks bro! I appreciate you supporting the channel!

So with key way at tdc line is gonna stay in time
That notch on your timing cover is to know when your engine is as top dead center and also that cap you unscrewed is called your crank case vent filter.
Oh okay, cool man, thanks
do you have bed liner. if not you should do that.
Elton Martin Not yet, gotta get her running good first then I'm gonna look into it. Wanna build tranny too
Call sherman williams directly and get a nonskid epoxy kit. dat marine grade stuffs.
Good one, thanx!
Since you are in there you should rebuild your vacuum pump and replace the sensor behind the vp. I don't recall which one is on your model of truck. If you really feel ambitious, you could change out your tappet cover gasket. Just a thought to save some time on down the road.
I've been telling him to get a billet tappet cover but it looks like that won't happen lol. Oh well.
Those are super nice and you can move the ccv off the front of the motor
Y'all are both right, I probably should replace it now. But its not giving me any problems and its not to hard to take this stuff apart. So I will just wait for now
Just want to help a fellow enthusiast/home mechanic. I have a 99 and have done a fair amount of work to mine.
I'm in the process of pulling my motor and trans. Clutch came loose so I'm just going to make my motor sit lower, rebuild my turbos, and possibly trans.
How come some of your videos on this playlist show as "private video?" It desnt allow me to watch it and im not sure why.
Part 3: How to pull the transmission.
But seriously if the trans blows eventually, would you do a built auto or manual swap it?
ford zf6 swap it lol
I have a question for your headlight where did you get your retainer for them cause I have the same headlight as you and mine didn't come with any and my old retainers did not fit the new headlights
TOXIC DIESEL I just got these off of Ebay for like $150 Man, all the bulbs I've bought seem to fit fine , just have to twist and turn for them to line up straight
ParoDoXz do you have any issues having them dog up on you.
ParoDoXz fog not dog
Not at all
ParoDoXz are they the spec- D tuning headlights
Can you remove your filter if you have a filter with the fass?
Phil Lizzi Yes, if your FASS bypasses the stock fuel filter like mine does. But like most people, I keep mine in, just in case I ever need it, it doesn't weigh much, so no need to drop it for weight reduction purposes

Didn’t work for me snapped the puller in half and pump stuck on there for whatever reason but is loose idk what to do from here
hey paradox, when you installed your fass 150, did you install a draw straw or sump? i was thinking on either getting a fass 150 or airdog 150 any advice?

ParoDoXz gotta look out for the Cummins bros, lol. btw great channel man I always enjoy the vids.

Circular piece is a Crank case breather, turn it counter clockwise to remove from timing case.
I had a question you put new injectors in, do you have to upgrade the vp 44?
Anthony Uribe No, you don't have too
Awesome videos man!
Thanks bro!
How do you remove the electrical connector?
MToutdoorsman There's a tab in the middle the you push down and it just pulls right out
ParoDoXz ok thanks I'll look again.
I'm ready to hear this think run with all upgrades
Twiztid Juggalotus Me too man!
when will it be ready
Twiztid Juggalotus tomorrow, video will be up this weekend
Ok
i like the route you took , i want to do that and clean all my stuff up like i said i have a weird leak on tappet cover haha
if i watch the whole 2 minute ad does it give more or do i only have to watch 3 seconds ?? let me know the more for you the better
Reckless Savage I'm not sure how the ads work man haha
Love the videos keep it up
I will man, thank you for supporting the channel!
Well I removed the vp44 to get to the tappit cover and I reinstalled it. But now it's running really rough. Do you know what could be causing it?
Any chance you figured out what your problem was?
@@rustyshackleford96 yeah I figured it out. My stupid self didn’t install the key the way right on the VP.
Timing off? Did you drop the key?
So that puke tube. What is that? I have had my cummins for a little under a year now and everybody always asks me what that is and i can never give them the anwser. Is it just for extra oil to drain or particles in my motor or what?
Chief SitsToPee I'm assuming so man, people say to extend them so that your fan doesn't throw oil all over the place . I need to clean my up a little
Forgot to mention, if I do have to replace the VP44, should I get a bigger horse power or stock, I eventually want to go bigger but not sure if o can run one with more horse power for now till I upgrade the rest later on, Do you also happen to know what size the stock VP44 is for our type of VP44?

Fine, yall got to me. Just ordered one haha
ParoDoXz LOL where not trying not bust your chops to bad but you won't regret not replacing it i understand sometimes when things are not broke don't fix them but this one worth replacing even if not leaking as gasket do eventually deteriorate and ya be seeing bucket of oil leaking eventually which no fun cause have tear all down again just replace a simple gasket.

the circular plastic piece is your crank case breather
great video
Thanks man!
can u get haloes
67 copperhead No, don't like them
Crank Case Ventilation. CCV filter Couldnt find at NAPA but 1A auto online found
I thought there were only 4 mounting bolts. Not 6?
their is a support bracket it looks like
Those back pump bolts were a nightmare on my P pump
Yeah they weren't easy
Cummins for life
I'd put a more rounded intake manifold on it to make it pull more air
Twiztid Juggalotus Been looking into them, thanks for watching!
I wish I had one of those trucks out here in Michoacán
Oh yeah man, they are good
Sell you my 99 Vali
What website did you buy the vp44 from?
my brother!!!
should get a stealth cover for the vp44
Im gonna let it ride for at least a couple weeks without tapping it at all just to see how it rides and make sure i have no problems with the new vp44 first. Then ill probably tap it with a stealth cover
ParoDoXz they are definitely worth it.
Keep the stock intake horn it's not worth spending 400 dollars for big shiny one its not like it restricts air
.. It looks good though haha
yeah, 3" (which it looks to be) will flow enough for 650 bhp or so
@@anewzack78 which is much more than we can make with our VP trucks sadly. I love my horn but understand it’s really just a decoration.
Get rid of the intake horn. The banks one is wonderful
Funny you say that.... lol we will see very soon
"dispuse"? I actually tried looking that up lol
you make awesome videos! just need to work on terminology a little. def subscribed!
Yeah I do man, Thank you for subscribing though! I really appreciate your support!
Harmonic Balancer
Yeah thats it haha
I wish the 7.3 powerstroke is as easy to work on like it is for the 5.9 lol. You guys are extremely spoiled when it comes to diesel upgrades.
Oh I know man, super easy lol
I think that's the ccv bottle or puke bottle.
Oh okay, Thanks for watching bro
Crankcase Breather Valve...if you google "Mopar1973man crankcase vent mod" he has a pretty good mod where you reroute the tube down the rear of the block to prevent oil getting all over the front of your bay. He reroutes it with pvc pipe and it seems to work pretty well.
Bryan Kunz yea it gets clogged in the radiator really bad and on the timing cover on these trucks
If you don’t know what a crankcase breather is then you don’t need to be giving information to others about how to change an injection pump
first?
THE Nerv yeah you were haha, you must have clicked on it the second it went public lol that was super fast
i just got lucky
