  • Rainy ride, giving me a chance to test my rain protection. Along the way I use my gopro in the rain during the ride, and talk about what a wet ride feels like. Draining the swamp. Arriving at Lake Toya.

Use plastic garbage bags inside the panniers, and the large ziplock bags for everything that's water sensitive, extra protection so you can enjoy the ride.

I put balloon tires on my trike. I reworked my Catrike front fenders with some 20 year old plastic fender blades from an old 26" bike (forceful bending to the Catrike fender frames required) then cut some makeshift mud flaps out of a detergent bottle. I haven't attached the mudflaps to my trike fenders yet. I'm hoping they will be supple enough to take thousands of hits yet stiff enough to retain shape when influenced by water, mud, and wind. The fenders have been doing their job so far but clearance is minimal and an occasional pebble gets launched noisily forward. Thanks again for the inspiration. P.S. that downhill looked dangerously fast for conditions.

Riding in the rain is really all mental strength. When I rode Seoul to Busan (similar route as you) there was a typhoon on one of the days. It was also the longest day at 160km and included four big hills(one we did in near pitch black night). It sucked but it was also awesome. Really endurance test. And the shower and food and beer at the end of it all was something else! It remains the most memorable day of the trip.

The problem with the Garmin is the change of air pressure during the change from rain-front to clear weather.. The garmin using a barometer to figure out the degree of incline and decline. :-) So now you now why Garmin goes bananas with the numbers. :-)

I will ensure my pants are both cinched and attached to my shoes somehow with an elastic band. I will be using toe shoes as they are good for wet environments. My trike is getting multiple upgrades this year and I will begin my weight training both with and without a trailer. I hope to leave in June and head out for a couple weeks. And again in July. Thanks for your video. It’s helped! 👍🏽

The days which I would choose to ride in the rain are often weighed against how heavy the rain, ambient temperature and if there is wind. I can get chilled easily on these kind of days and possibly risk catching a cold. I also don’t see all those potholes in the road very easily as my glasses get all wet and fogged up. Another big issue is how well car & truck drivers can see me. I’ve been in thunderstorms and seen recent lightning hits along roads which tells me get off the road and seek shelter.

Congratulations on making that ride in the rain when so many would have stayed indoors. I'm not sure I would have braved that downpour. I didn't even notice you'd lost your fenders too. That's a shame. I have Ortlieb panniers. They've never let in a single drop.

I have been giving your wet weather issues some thought, and remembered that Ortlieb makes a great set of panniers called Back Rollers Classic waterproof pannier bags that are excellent, Little Pricey but I think that the cost of a new computer or other components outweighs the cost of these panniers.. Oh..! And they come in yellow your theme color for JaYoe Nation...! I hope this was some help for you..! You are going to travel some countries which will be a little wet, and if not now somewhere down the road they will become extremely useful.. Ja Yoe...!

Hi, Matt. I am really enjoying the bits of footage with the DJI Mavic Pro. Nature around Hokkaido really looks quite spectacular, I might have to add a ride around those parts to the cycling around the Seto Naikai (Shimanami Kaido) experience (which is absolutely amazing, I imagine you'll get to do it later in your tour), although I would be more careful when approaching red-crowned cranes with the drone if I was you. They are endangered and one of Japan's national symbols ;)
I wanted to say... there's a gazillion people going to Hokkaido every year solely for the purpose of visiting the onsens around Noboribetsu, and yet you chose to ride trough the rain via a route roughly parallel to the one which would have taken you to onsen nirvana... was that something you missed on your research or just not all that interested in onsens?
Good luck on your travels (...and pay a bit more attention to your rear mirror, please 😊)

I lover my recumbent trike but when it rains it is impossible to stay dry over a longer peridod of riding it. If you have rain gear that could keep you dry you will sweat like hell and be wet afterwards, too. There is a huge advantage in an upright bicycle with a poncho. If it isn't too cold i try to wear as less as possible and have extra clothes in my pannier bags. If you wear merino wool it even keeps you warm when it is soaking wet. Synthetic fibres are a cheaper and less efficient option.
Textile bags always have that problem in heavy rain. The water enters from the back of the bag (where the rain cover is open) and is collected there. Even if there is mesh to let the water out is soaks the fabric. use drybags inside, a heavy plastic bag or if you aren't a weigthweenie build a perfectly fitting inner bag from PVC pond liner. PVC can simply be glued while other polymers give you a lot of trouble in bonding them together.

There is a product for automotive windshields called Rain-X available in the USA. It's used on real glass and promotes the formation of large beads of water that roll off without making a film. For the first few hours after applying it to my auto windshield visibility is actually better without the use of the wipers because of the uniform pattern of the dispersion.
