Hi Matt, I am a bit new to your channel (but trying to catch up), am married to a south China girl but living in Tokyo with 3 baby girls. More of a 2 wheeled cyclist myself, but am enjoying your channel in the evenings. Many thanks! Ross.
Loved this episode Matt. It felt to me like you've finally got your groove back. Haven't felt this vibe since maybe your South Japan episodes. I kinda think it's also because the drone shots were so interesting. Those really help, perhaps more than simply filming forwards, to show the viewer just what you're riding through, especially the scale of it. Little trike in a big beautiful world. Glad to be along for the journey from here in Brooklyn.
its betel nut(mixed with calcium oxide). you'll see a lot alone the road side (a small food stand) in Taiwan.you are not eating it, you just chewing it.keeps you wake up for long distance driving,
People think to badly of rain. It's not a big deal. It annoys when it's cold and you see no chance to get warm and dry, but in a place like Taiwan, where the weather during the summer time is hot hot hot - rain takes it down to a comfortable temp. Getting wet is not a big deal, sometimes it can even be fun, like you saw he had.
Betelnut stands. And you are right that they are truck driver bates, so they often tended by girls wearing not too much stuff. The more you go south the more there are. Prepare for some eye feasts. Try some betelnuts too.
Matt, those little shops with the bright lights...that stay lite late into the night are selling betel nuts. (Beatle nut, some lime, wrapped in a betel nut leave. It is often used by Taxi and Truck drivers (99.9% men) to offer a little cocaine like buzz. They spit out the juice as a red liquid (you'll see the stains on the ground all around Taiwan. As the saying goes, sex sells, so quite often the little tiny stores are maned (lol) but young, scantily clad girls. The game is to have the girl walk to your vehicle, order the betel nut...and see how many times you can get her to and from teh store....(watching her walk towards and away)....games men play. You have to stop and interview one of the girls....you know....for science.
Richard Cournoyer I want to see him talk with the girls selling 檳榔 (binlang) too 😂😂,if possible please ask how much is for sex service, it will be a interesting interview 😂😂😂
Everyone here is spot on. When I visited Taiwan on business, after work some coworkers drove me out to onethose little shops. Out walks a girl who leans in the car. They order some belts nut wrapped up, and she comes back with it. And they had me try it. Not too tasty and it really gets the saliva flowing. Turns your teeth black if you eat to much too often.
10:4213:41 Your encounters with friendly random strangers like these are my favourite parts of your videos. I've noticed that a lot of people speak English in Taiwan, right?
Matt - thanks for sharing your adventures; I miss Taiwan! Awesome place to cycle (especially on the East and South side of the Island). Again you mentioned getting up early to avoid the severe heat. Any other suggestions or discoveries how to reduce the fatigue of the tropical heat?
early morning better chance to meet the elderly like you shown around your morning though.south korea i live near mountain site was breezing through the windows that cooling the heat before hot summer heat . the.offroad motorbike i ve ridden in the mountains was just like you were in raining.2cycle motor engine called Honda crm250.
Matt, as a compromise for the “face/no face” vote, you might try cutting away from your face at times, but continue your voice over on beauty shots, drone footage, drive-by’s, etc. (sorry, probably a bit more editing on your part. It’s an old editors’ trick) Then you get the best of both! Love the vlogs. Here’s to more downhills!
These little store which face the road are selling the ARECA-NUT Chewing the mixture of areca nut and betel leaf can be found in most of the blue-collar population The use of areca-nut will lead to warm sensation and make you feel refreshing
Matt, it is a great idea to face the camera forward, Matt people are most interested in hearing you and watching whats up ahead. Where is that insect repellant,,,,ouch
I agree with some others. When you were shooting outwards and talking, I felt like I was riding with you. With the camera pointed at you, there isn't much else to see. You're seeing it, but we're not.
Hey , I watched a lot of your videos yesterday night. there are so good. I do not like destroying moutations for farming. By the way how long you have been living in China? What you think of the change of forest rate in China. Do you think China has much more forest than 10 years ago? or much less ? what you think the forest rate in China 10 years ago and now ? How you think about the nature. Sorry I have too many questions. Maybe because of my father, I started to have interest in where my root is from.
Ah, the classic GoPro audio quality. I've just started using a Zoom H1n and a Sony ECM-CS3 lapel mic to mitigate those issues. Still like the video quality they provide though. Cheers Matt!
No doubt! Riding in the rain is only really fun when I'm in my velomobile with the full top on! At least my Hero 6 is water proof, I'll deal with the audio. Enjoy watching places I can't get to.
At 8:50, I think they are selling Areca nuts (tropical Asian palm) to truck drivers to keep them awake while driving. Normally a young and sexy lady sitting inside. They will flash their upper body for a second if you buy nuts.
Selling beetle-nuts(檳榔) mostly , and also cigarettes, Redbull kind of drinks, bottled water. Those kind of stand mainly for truck or taxi driver and almost zero english ability.
Plenty of people already answered your question. So yeah, they sell betel nuts (aka areca nut). Don't try them. It can be addicting. More importantly, one can get oral cancer if consumed too much. Those betel nut stands used to be really popular and made good money. So, they would have young and attractive girls stationed in there wearing skanky clothes. Don't see much of those anymore. Older/average women now (compared to before).
Matt, those stores are the famous betel nuts girls in Taiwan, please next time stop to buy some betel nuts and you must interview those girls, please choose the most beautiful for interview 😁
Sun Moon Lake is a famous tourist destination among Chinese group tourists, so Falun Gong is there "to show them the 'truth'". Falun Gong shows up in every tourist destination where there are a lot of Chinese tourists. It's not only in Taiwan, but all over the world outside of China.
(snippets from Wikipedia. I recommend you read the whole article. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falun_Gong) Falun Gong is a Chinese spiritual practice that combines meditation and qigong exercises with a moral philosophy centred on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. The practice emphasizes morality and the cultivation of virtue and identifies as a qigong practice of the Buddhist school, though its teachings also incorporate elements drawn from Taoist traditions. Through moral rectitude and the practice of meditation, practitioners of Falun Gong aspire to eliminate attachments, and ultimately to achieve spiritual enlightenment. The practice initially enjoyed support from Chinese officialdom, but by the mid to late 1990s, the Communist Party and public security organizations increasingly viewed Falun Gong as a potential threat due to its size, independence from the state, and spiritual teachings. By 1999, government estimates placed the number of Falun Gong practitioners at 70 million. During that time, negative coverage of Falun Gong began to appear. On 20 July 1999, the Communist Party leadership initiated a nationwide crackdown and multifaceted propaganda campaign intended to eradicate the practice. It blocked Internet access to websites that mention Falun Gong, and in October 1999 it declared Falun Gong a "heretical organization" that threatened social stability. Falun Gong practitioners in China are reportedly subject to a wide range of human rights abuses: hundreds of thousands are estimated to have been imprisoned extrajudicially, and practitioners in detention are subject to forced labour, psychiatric abuse, torture, and other coercive methods of thought reform at the hands of Chinese authorities. As of 2009, human rights groups estimated that at least 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners had died as a result of abuse in custody. Some observers put the number much higher, and report that tens of thousands may have been killed to supply China's organ transplant industry (see Organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners in China). In the years since the persecution began, Falun Gong practitioners have become active in advocating for greater human rights in China. Hundreds of thousands are estimated to have been imprisoned extrajudicially, and practitioners in detention are reportedly subjected to forced labour, psychiatric abuse, torture, and other coercive methods of thought reform at the hands of Chinese authorities. The U.S. Department of State and Congressional-Executive Commission on China cite estimates that as much as half of China's reeducation-through-labour camp population is made up of Falun Gong practitioners. Amnesty International said at least 100 Falun Gong practitioners had reportedly died in the 2008 calendar year, either in custody or shortly after their release. Falun Gong sources have documented over 3,700 deaths. Investigative journalist Ethan Gutmann estimated 65,000 Falun Gong were killed for their organs from 2000 to 2008 based on extensive interviews, while researchers David Kilgour and David Matas reported, "the source of 41,500 transplants for the six-year period 2000 to 2005 is unexplained". In 2006, allegations emerged that a large number of Falun Gong practitioners had been killed to supply China's organ transplant industry. ... called attention to the extremely short wait times for organs in China-one to two weeks for a liver compared with 32.5 months in Canada-noting that this was indicative of organs being procured on demand. It also tracked a significant increase in the number of annual organ transplants in China beginning in 1999, corresponding with the onset of the persecution of Falun Gong. Despite very low levels of voluntary organ donation, China performs the second-highest number of transplants per year.
08:30 That kind of little shop is selling betel nuts. That is for driver to stay focus on the road, just like coffee does. And the girl always wear like very short skirt and hells to draw driver’s attention. Sometimes it even cause accidents because driver keep looking at the girls. This is a special betel nuts selling culture only in Taiwan.
I prefer the camera not facing forward as you ride, but either way you'll never be able to make everyone happy. You've always filmed these videos the way you wanted them, so don't forget about that. Maybe a bit of both as a compromise?
@3:33 he says tong xin liang (I believe that means gay) And just before that he was talking about pictures and peace... When you first started recording him he said "I love you" haha ~insert joke here~
At 3:25 the guy said "等一下到派出所拍一個照!Trump萬歲!世界和平!反同性戀!" that's means "Let's go to the police station to take a picture. Long life for Trump! Peace for the world! Against homosexual!" He also said "how is your wife? " He seems to know you , maybe he watches you on youtube, so he wants to take a picture with you. Or maybe he doesn`t know you, is because you are firming with your camera and by looking the words on the paper of your bike, so he knows you are a youtuber and wants to take a picture with you. But is very weird to take you at the police station to take picture 😱
EDIT: he said "Long live Trump, World peace, against gay.". still a nutty guy. Those betelnut shop also sell soft drinks and energy drinks (like red bull) and frozen bottled water for cooler box.

6:01 I can't read too much Chinese, but I think that might be protesting about China's treatment of Falun Gong followers.
I could be wrong!
Yes, pause it at 6:01, You can see 法轮功 - It's Falun Gong.
