The song was originally written for Nina Simone, who released it on her album, Broadway-Blues-Ballads in November 1964. The Animals later included "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" in September 1965 on the US release of their album, Animals Tracks

What a great voice Eric Bourdon had.
I really believe it was the Animals, especially with their 1964 rendition of House of the Rising Sun, that ushered in the whole English rock/ blues movement, from Cream to Led Zeppelin. From Clapton to Trower.
The Animals somehow did not get the recognition they richly deserved.

The first live concert I ever attended (at age 13 in 1967) was The Animals (with a few other acts of the day on the bill). Eric Burdon was the single biggest influence on my own music. Eric was always a real trooper for the music of our generation. He changed with the times (as we all had to) but remained staunch (and brilliant) throughout. And he is still going strong!!!!

The fascination for the US at least was that the British bands were going over there and singing music that only black people were singing, there were hardly any white bands singing black cultural music and the brits couldn`t understand this because it was the most refreshing and cutting edge music of that time and every British band wanted to go to America to experience it, that's why most of them spent their free time in blues and jazz clubs, and because of the time period they were probably the only white people in there.
America missed so much in music because of their ability to dismiss things because they had a them and us attitude to black culture.

    • @marvinc999
      @marvinc999 8 років тому +8

      MrNadefodder
"the British bands were going over there and singing music that only black people were singing....."
And in this regard, the Stones were exemplary - in re-introducing (if not INtroducing) white American youngsters to music (ie Blues) which came from their land, but which was still quite alien to them.
Keith Richards once said - perhaps only half-jokingly - that when he mentioned 'Muddy Waters' to American kids, the frequent response was "Where's that ?"
IMHO, the Sixties and Seventies were a GREAT example of Anglo-American (cultural) co-operation.
So much pleasanter to bring Joy to the world than Death........................again, IMHO.
      Vaya con Dios !

The Ed Sullivan Show. Did anyone realize the impact this music was having on the youth of America at this time? Before DVD's, video tapes, UA-cam. This is where us "young uns" received our first real dose of this completely radical music. This is the music that defined an entire generation. And the old square himself, Ed Sullivan, right in the middle of it.

Beatles, Stones, Eric Burdon, Animals...James Brown. Ed very rarely invited anyone over to shake his hand but he did just that after a great performance by James Brown. Ed acted like a little kid. So great. Ed was one of a kind. I dont remember if Ed ever had Jimi Hendrix on, but if he didnt it wasnt for a lack of trying. Jimi was so hot then after Moterey Pop in 1967. I did see Jimi on the Dick Cavett show a few times.

Chas Chandler of The Animals also deserves credit for discovering Jimi Hendrix. Animals were on tour in US, Chandler met Hendrix, who was an unknown hanging out in New York, and brought him to England, set him up with a band, and let him loose in the recording studio. The rest is history. The Animals are great in their own right -- much greater than they're currently given credit for. Eric Burdon had one of the great male rock voices of the sixties. Their music had much tougher edge than the Beatles' and many other Brit groups of the time.

Actually, before that, Les Paul discovered him playing at a small night club in NY, but he only stayed for a few minutes before having to leave in order to go to an important meeting or something. By the time he got back, he asked the bartender who the guy was, and he said something to the effect of "Why do you care? We kicked him out two hours ago because he wasn't that good and starting to play some really weird stuff on his guitar."
He asked his manager to find this left handed guitar player from NY and bring him to him, but a week later he got a call. "That left handed guitar player you wanted me to look for just died in a house fire."
Then, he saw Jimi on TV, called up that manager and said "You remember how a couple years back I wanted you to look for a left handed guitar player from NY?" "Yeah, he died in a house fire." "Well, you're fired because his name's Jimi Hendrix and he's on TV right now."

    • @DougCameraMan
      @DougCameraMan 10 років тому +2

Great story, CPD0123, it sounds like Les Paul's manager was probably just trying to get out of really finding Jimi. A less diplomatic manager could have told Les, "find him yourself, I book jobs for you, I'm not your talent scout." :)

I think your very wrong. Look on UA-cam about the “ wrecking crew”. They sat in an created the sound that you think is distinct to a group. Like The Beach Boys. That is pure wrecking crew. For years if they didn’t sit in you didn’t have a hit. Then they would spend time with the band helping them learn what to play and adapt the sound to their skills. Many later names you know came from the wrecking crew. Glen Campbell, his guitar skills well know from his time as a member of the wrecking crew. I think what you said is more fantasy then truth. Wall of sound developed in the 60 took many takes and over dubs to create.

Baby, do you understand me now
If sometimes I seem to be mad
But don't you know that no one alive
    Can always be an angel
When things go wrong I seem to be mad
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
    Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
And then again it seems that all I have do is worry
Then you're bound to see my other side
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
If I get edgy I want you to know
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has it's problems and I get my share
And that's one thing I never meant to do
    Because I love you
Oh, Oh baby don't you know I'm human
Have thoughts like any other one
Sometimes I find myself long regretting
Some foolish thing some little simple thing I've done

OK, can't see it anywhere on the comments page so looks like it'll be me who'll write this little factoid. The guy on the left playing bass is Chas Chandler. And a couple of years after this he spotted a black guy playing guitar in a club and thought he was great. He brought the guy to the UK and Jimi Hendrix started his rise to the top.

When I first learned to talk I would always ask her to play their albums. As a teen my mom's friends thought it was weird that I was always listening to them, instead of "New" music. I guess I've just always had good taste in music.
