@Free Dopamine - At the height of yellow journalism in the USA there was a common phrase, “Speech may be free but printing presses are expensive,” referring to the fact that human rights and labor activists could barely get heard, while the robber barons owned or basically controlled all of the newspapers and used the press to push their ultra-conservative super-capitalist agenda. So what Musk is doing is basically duplicating that model of the early robber baron era: buy up the communication platform in order to push his views.
So there is a contradiction in paying for free speech, but I think that’s been tacitly acknowledged for a while - or at least it used to be - but Musk and his acolytes don’t really care about the contradiction, because they’re open hypocrites.
If you’re into political theory, you should look up the idea of “the normative state vs. the prerogative state” which a theorist who watched the rise of the Nazis posited. Basically, the fascist sees laws and norms as a means to control his opponents, but gives himself the prerogative of breaking whatever norm or law he wants … to give himself more power and control over his opponents.
And the fascist’s followers love when he breaks laws and norms, because he’s got them convinced they’re “his tribe” and they’re in a death-match with *everyone else on the planet* … a self-fulfilling prophecy, since by trying to stamp out “the other” (whether that’s Jews, socialists, homosexuals, racial and ethnic minorities, intellectuals, assertive women, sensitive men, or usually all of the above), the fascist and his followers *do* create a death-match…
I hate to be dire, but if you want to understand our era, just read up on Germany, Italy, and Spain ca. 1920-1939, and don’t let anyone call you alarmist when you do. Btw Nick, the captcha stuff is literally a way to train AI models. Google used it extensively with those snippets of text, now their AI models can read messed up broken text with 99% accuracy (humans average like 70%).
The new captcha stuff is probably being used to train Tesla AI. Teslas removed their sensors and now rely on cameras for the majority of the automated driving. The captcha is just teaching the AI to perceive depth. We can clearly see where the person is in relation to the white lines, but the AI can’t always.
The first few captchas the AI is supposed to know (which verifies you), then the last one is usually unknown and you teach it.

I don't think that's true in this case. When the captcha is a street sign, fire hydrant, or a word in a book, it genuinely doesn't know what the answer is until enough people answer it.
In this case, the puzzles were clearly generated by a computer so it already knows the answers and doesn't need people to train it. This is just an old school run of the mill captcha as far as I can tell.

What bugs me most about this whole ordeal is how willing my (smart) friends were to just blindly defer to his "genius". Any moron, myself included, could have told you these were horrible decisions. This just tells me that the only reason SpaceX and tesla have done so well is because they managed to keep Elon distracted long enough to make something that works.
That and government subsidies, plus a lack of EPA and FAA oversight and consequences. It’s almost shocking.

I blocked Elon a few months ago and it’s been a slightly more peaceful experience. I mean it’s still Twitter, but I don’t have to see him, so it’s a little better.
I have a little bit of a conspiracy regarding those weird captchas. For years now captchas have been used to train many different AIs for big tech companies like Google. I saw an announcement recently that Elon is starting up his own AI project, so it's possible those complex and extremely long captchas might be intentionally failing people so they have to redo them and give his new AI a training boost.
i had curated my twitter to only show me my mutuals and interests, and once el*n took over, the amount of hate and homophobia i and alot of ppl began to experience was absolutely insane and disgusting

I can definitely understand why artists trying to find their footing would need this and I don’t see many people knocking me or anyone who is in my line of work for having one as it’s one of the few “acceptable” reasons for obtaining one.
I don’t agree that it should be required but we literally have the deck stacked against us- some more than others.

Twitter has been my favorite social media platform since like 2016 and even when Elon first bought it it wasn’t that bad but having to scroll through the most braindead people to get to real comments is so bad I just deleted that shit.
Honestly I can't scroll Twitter for 10 minutes anymore without seeing something that utterly disgusts, even low-key traumatizes me. I open, check a couple people I like then dip.

I used to use twitter for sw, because its one of the only places that allow stuff like that, but like the past 6 months have made me stop entirely. Like i get notifications for like Matt Walsh, Tucker Carlson, just a bunch of right wing losers even though I avidly avoid pages like that and block the accounts after getting notifications, my point is it really has become soooo right wing its unbearable
If you're on pc there are browser extensions that automatically block all twitter blue accounts you run into, it removes a big portion of the right wing echochamber

Someone's probably already said it but a lot of these captchas are used to train AI. I would not be even remotely surprised if Musk decided to use the twitter userbase to solve captchas to improve AI as that's something he'd get money for.

I used to check Twitter incessantly and, despite it already getting worse and worse the past few years, Musk’s takeover was the catalyst for me to finally leave it. I’ve checked in a few months after this and can only bear about 2 minutes of it before I have to tap out again.
