Literally the only context I can think of where this doesn't set off red flags everywhere would be in some anime when someone has some superpower that literally lets them turn their love into mass and literally crush someone or some shit like that. If a villainous person says it? Creepy as all hell. If a "heroic" person says it? About 50 times worse.
If Music was a real person, this would leave her vulnerable to future abuse because she might associate “love” with being pinned down/hurt/denied autonomy.
It's pretty much gas lighting (if I have the term right). I can imagine that scenario where if he was the bad guy or a fraud looking after the autistic child of some naive parents, he would say that to cover up his abuse of her.

Sia: "I keep writing roles for her to keep her safe" *casts Maddie in an extremely controversial role and then picks fights with people about it on Twitter*
@@luisf2793 Is that a bad movie? It comes on the TV every now and then and I haven't seen it, but from the trailers on TV it seemed like a generic horror?
@@monochromedream-eatingbaku ohh trust me this movie is unbelievable bad, but generic is not how I would describe it. Also wouldn't call it a horror movie unless you're describing how horrible it is.
I’m autistic and I don’t blame Maddie for this. She’s a kid whose own mother has walked away from her to let Sia raise her instead. She has no one but Sia to guide her and I’m scared to read the book she’ll write about her life one day. I blame Sia. You hit the nail on the head. Autism is different for everyone and this feels like an offensive stereotype that tries to fantasize it and infantilize us.
I exclude Maddie from my hatred of Music and SIA because of her age at the time and the well known fact that most child and teen stars have very little control over their careers and are often forced to do things that they don’t want to do. She isn’t to blame for any of this mess. Her mother and SIA knew exactly what they were doing the entire time and never stopped once to think that maybe making Music was a colossal mistake.
I've been saying this for literally years- Sia's obsession with Maddie is pathological and unhealthy. Sleepovers in the same bed with an unrelated minor who depends on you for an income and for psychological validation are not okay. This is grooming. She wants Maddie to be totally dependent on her. I can't fathom how Melissa permits this to go on. They traded one monster for another.
How is this not a massive red flag of either a very inappropriate relationship or just outright grooming? Given most of celebrity culture though they won't call it out on their own without being a net positive to their internal political capital.
It's the level of posessiveness. It's the fact that Sia can't bear the thought of Maddie exploring her career potential on her own. Sia is literally controlling and manipulating Maddie's every single movement to keep possession of her. It's probably why she has "so many projects" for Maddie, just so she can't go off on her own.
It kinda seems weird to me (though I don't really know about either case) but that there having been so many problems when Michael Jackson had 'sleepovers' that Sia didn't think to not have them - Even just to protect herself. Historically things aren't great when an adult invites someone elses child for a sleepover with them. (I don't get it...)
14 year old Maddie crying and saying “I don’t want anyone to think I’m making fun of them” breaks my heart man. The entertainment industry really does not care about forcing children to do something they’re not comfortable with
@TheRealDavidm75 the only "ability" I get (not professionally diagnosed but likely have) is spinning in a chair is entertaining much longer than it should be
Sia: I keep writing roles for maddie to keep her safe this sounds like a toxic relationship where they're trying to isolate their partner so they don't ever leave them
That's exactly what it is. An adult having such an obsession with a teenager who isn't related to them is not an okay situation and is most definitely toxic.
She should let Maddie decide her own paths and let her have a choice.. it just feels like Maddie is being peer pressured by her.. I really don't want to say this cause I actually love Sia and Maddie relationship.. but this has gone too far..
I watched a few episodes of “Dance Moms” and Maddie went from one toxic relationship with Abbie Lee Miller to another one with Sia. And Maddie’s mother seems to be a pageant mom who has always desperately wanted her daughter in the spotlight, so I am believe she has played a role in enabling these relationships.
i feel extremely bad for maddie. sia is totally obsessed with her, and completely manipulated her into doing this movie, when she didn’t wanna do it in the first place because she didn’t want to hurt others.
Her growing obsession with her is creepy, god mother or not. not to mention her saying she won't make any art unless maddie is apart of it that's just manipulative. i wonder how she's dealing with all the backlash from the community as she didn't want to offend or make fun of anyone.
Unfortunately, Maddie has been used by most of the influential adults in her life. Her mother put her on Dance Moms, a TV show that had her in bad situations for “drama”, just so she (and of course the mom herself) could get famous. While on the show, she was further manipulated by Abby Lee, who clearly is a tyrannical nut job, and shouldn’t be in charge of children ever. Then Sia “saved her” from Abby Lee, and is doing the EXACT SAME THING. Using her for fame. Using her for extra attention and money. I don’t think this poor girl has ever gone a year in her life where someone wasn’t trying to use her to get their own attention, or make a profit.
The worst thing about the whole thing is that Maddie apparently came to her in tears concerned that people would think she was making fun of people with ASD and Sia convinced her it was fine. Even Maddie, on some level, knew this wasn’t right at the time.
@@icatfishedyourdad2767 that's sweet, I haven't seen this movie but I'm understanding it is very bad (I'm 31 y.o. autistic) but I will not talk bad about this girl now, knowing how she felt about it in the first place. I guess she did nothing wrong since it wasn't her idea and she even tried to say it. It's a job after all and she did her best.
The fact that Maddie was actually pretty scared that she was accidentally offending the autistic community with her acting when shooting this movie and cried at one point while Sia just brushed it off and said "it's fine" makes me feel bad for Maddie
They could’ve made a movie about a movie about a recovering addict and alcoholic who has to take her of her younger sister, after their grandmother died, and instead of having the younger sister autistic, make her lash out because of grief and have music be her coping mechanism and what brings the sisters back together
Or how music struggles with being non verbal. Not being able to share how she feels in a genuine way makes her frustrated. She would work through that throughout the movie.
Or maybe make her autistic but don’t make it the main plot of the movie. Such as a recovering drug addicted who has to take care of her sister who happens to be autistic. But does it in a more realistic subtle way and doesn’t obsess over the fact she’s autistic
At this point, I don’t think Sia thinks of Maddie as a human being. She just thinks of her as a doll she can play with and manipulate however she wants.
A total object for her to control and love bomb. It's creepy and gross. Especially considering she has slept in bed with her. Make Sia a dude and there would be pitchfork mobs
@@arkham_miami maybe not grooming, but extremely manipulative. "I don't want to make any art without her in it" is especially what makes it feel that way. Essentially "without Maddie, I'd stop making art" would put the blame on Maddie if Maddie were to ever leave her.

@@emmahollow8898 are you stupid??? Autism is cognitive, it’s not their fault they don’t act the way you want them to... autistic people have a disability
Yeah no their relationship is very creepy. The fact that even Maddie could tell that the perfomance was going to come off as mockery and Sia just kinda said "nah, it'll be fine" and pressured her to do it is just wrong. And just their whole relationship is weird af. Edit: Even if it's a mother daughter dynamic it's still toxic especially with the huge power imbalance.
Maddie's a smart kid, plenty of youth are more aware now than ever about the struggles minorities face, I'd say it's common sense on her part to feel uncomfortable with the movie. Sia's just.... INSANELY stupid.
@@millamilla123 It can depend, I guess. When I was around 4-8 years old I would have sleepovers with a friend of my family (she was like 20), and nothing weird or wrong happened. At least in my eyes, there's nothing weird.
Sia seems like the kind of person in high school that would say the nicest things when they see developmentally disabled kids, then try her best not to giggle and snort when one of her friends calls those kids the r-slur
That's why I was getting Frank Farian and Milli Vanilli vibes from this, because it's like how Frank Farian pressured Rob & Fab into lip-syncing to other people's vocals.
@@angeline808 I'm definitely not the first to say this but I will repeat that Sia has known Maddie for a good chunk of Maddie's life-- plucking her out of relative obscurity (we know she and Jojo Siwa were on Dance Moms, but outside of that, Maddie wasn't known for much else before Sia) because Sia decided that this child was her muse! There is absolutely a power dynamic in their relationship favoring Sia, and it's gross and troubling how Sia used Maddie. Even though Maddie has never spoken about any abuse she might have been on the receiving end of, with the kind of relationship they had-- I don't even know if you'd call it professional since the vibe I get from Sia is that she sees Maddie as a daughter as well as her muse, something might've been going on. I've always had an issue with the idea of people being "muses" in art, but it waves so many red flags when a grown ass adult (regardless of gender) is like, "Yes! This literal child is my muse! She inspires me to create my art!"
When I was twelve or so, I wrote a cringey poem about a friend's disabled cousin thinking I was deep. My sister told me not to give it to the father, and thank God I was too shy to go through with it. This reminds me of that poem - ignorant, self-righteous, and inherently flawed. At least I was a dumb kid who kept it to myself.
I hope you saved it. Wonderful to be able to look back and cringe at ourselves. Also great for our continued humility. And IF you have saved it- now that you've given appropriate context, you should definitely share it in a reply for all our benefit. :p
A little girl hanging with a full grown adult, sleep-overs, 'keeping her safe' and her micro-managing her career??? excuse me, why aren't we talking about this???
@@babyrose7830 I don't understand how people like you can take one word and focus on that specific word. If you don't realize why this is wrong then...wow. And we all know that people can be friends regardless of their age it's the way Sia is coming off.
No I understand why Sia comes off as potentially predatory - her obsession with Maddie is strange, wether sexual or not, she should back off a little and give her some space. I don’t think it’s healthy for any random lady to come along and play the mother role when she already has a mother, and then being obsessive ontop of that. I was reffering mainly to the commenter saying that “a minor hanging out with a grown woman” is a problem. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean the whole comment in general, should’ve pointed that out but i was exhausted
so, let me get this straight. sia supposedly "fired" another actor that was autistic because she was supposedly uncomfortable in the environment. yet maddie had multiple panic attacks and sobbed on set because she knew it was wrong, and yet sia forced her to do it..?
To make matters worse, there is ample evidence that the "original autistic actress" never existed and that Sia had always planned on casting Maddie Ziegler in the role.
@@epsilonalphaargo1948 if Sia is a male, people will suspect Sia being an obsessed predator. Anything about this makes Sia the same level as being the child predator pretending to be a warm person so that a child can trust them immediately.
@XOWavey yea, I feel uncomfortable when I saw that music video. The reaction I had on that is the same thing with ‘Cuties’ movie. It’s just so uncomfortable to use kids as a prop for this kind of manner. Sia’s obsession with Maddie is too unhealthy.
What also is bad with the restraint scenes is that a lot of the neurodivergent people I know, including myself, are sensitive to touch. I myself view touch as an intimate thing because of my sensitivity to it, touch is a thing only given to those I trust and love, like close friends and family. But even then, I don't think I'll let any of them hold me down like this, and I would be MORE stressed out than anything. What makes it even more worse is that they talked loudly to explain what's going on, when you shouldn't do that, because that will just make the person more stimulated. A better way to show those scenes is to first show that Music is comfortable with touches from the two characters. Something light and easy like her slightly leaning on their shoulder or holding their hand. Then, when she's having an attack, have them ask what's going on and gently grab Music's hand as a way for her to get a stable point. Even then, this isn't recommended, but it's still a lot better than what they showed. If you still want to include those squishes, then show what things are very much an active danger for Music. If she's moving very rapidly and unpredictably in a tight room, then have them mention (again, in a quieter voice) that she could hit her head violently on a wall. That's probably the only time you could do something like this to someone having an attack, when they can be an active danger to themselves and there's no other thing you can do.
And here's the thing, for some people that are sensitive to touch (for example me) another person simulating pressure can still be a positive experience that can help regulate stimuli. IF. ITS. DONE. WITH. CONSENT. Which music very much did not give. Even then it's not really something that would help when im dealing with full on sensory overload just something to help me regulate when im approaching sensory overload.
it makes me so sad because it’s kind of brushed off, because people associate grooming only with sexual favors and such, so when stuff like this happens nobody does anything.
@@spaghetti5914 I completely agree with you, two hours of research, one being googling and exploring various articles, autistic people in history, autistic people in the twenty-first century, REAL meltdown/breakdown videos and the other being sitting down with someone actually ON the autism spectrum to ask educated questions and ask if (x) way is a good way to depict that aspect in a movie is MORE than enough to know the basics of Autism. BUT. When you're an ADULT with a net worth of over twenty-five MILLION dollars with the resources to NOT ONLY recruit NUMEROUS autistic actors/actresses for roles, ESPECIALLY the ones where you're representing someone on the spectrum, and CONSULT OTHER people on the Autistic spectrum, but also SPEND THREE YEARS researching autism it is NOT enough to just "scrape the surface" of a disorder. You, as a director, and writer, are in charge of representing Autism correctly if your movie has an autistic character in it. Sia failed this one.
Just hang with _ANY_ person on the spectrum! You'll get more info than Sia, even if they're non-verbal! ESPECIALLY NON-VERBAL now that I think about it!
Sia controlling Maddie's entire career gives off huge narcissistic parent vibes. "You're too naïve and clueless to make your own decisions, so I have to make them all for you! I'm not controlling you, I'm protecting you! You should be eternally grateful for everything I've done for you!"
“Why didn’t you use a non-verbal autistic actress?” “Working with them was too stressful.” “…isn’t that a plot point in the movie you’re making? About how this person learns how to work with a nonverbal autistic in a productive and compassionate manner?” “Your point?”
As an autistic person myself, I can’t believe she would dare to call this crapfest a ‘love letter’ to the autistic community. This isn’t a love letter, it’s a flaming bag of dog shit and a hurtful note thrown into the autistic community’s backyard.
Im actually autistic, and so is my little brother. My toxic mother used videos of autistic meltdowns off the internet to learn how to "help" us whenever we're having a tough day. I bet she used this film too. Then she gets surprised and calls the police when we're getting more agitated... The number of times we have reported to social services is unbelievable. She just keeps (somehow) convincing the social workers that we're fine, we're just prone to overreacting to everything. I managed to run away and im staying with my grandparents atm. Unfortunately i didn't manage to bring my brother with me, but once I'm 18 I'm gonna get legal action against our mother for more than just this abuse.
Best part is, Maddie knew autistic people were going to think she was mocking them. She already knew she wasn't the best person for the role and yet Sia pushed her into it anyway.
Not only that… she was continually talked INTO the role…. She was terrified of offending someone …. Wasn’t sure what she was doing was right… Sia was even quoted saying she wouldn’t ever create again UNLESS she could work with Maddie…. Can you imagine the pressure that puts on a young adult/kid?
Did none of the interviewers call Sia out on her unhealthy relationship with Maddie, where she openly admits to controlling her and rely on her? Sia is just sitting there, talking about how she stops Maddie from taking jobs she doesn't like or approve of, and how she writes her projects for Maddie to "protect her", and how she won't work without Maddie. Like, one of the interviewers must have called her out on it... right?
@@talynhastime9343 I can understand not calling her out on the blatant pedohebephilia, but not even the other stuff? Like, she doesn’t get the “she’s her mother” pass, or at least she shouldn’t, but does what anyone would notice as sexual abuse when committed by a man somehow wrap around so that people view everything else as normal?
most interviewers will only touch on what the interviewees allow them to. Right now there are no active allegations for Sia and Maddie so they can't ask them questions like that without slander. But they can bring it up and allow others to speculate.
Wait, so Sia, a grown woman, proclaimed herself to be a "surrogate mother" to a teen girl, whom she met when said girl was _11-years-old,_ practically bragged about being obsessed with her, controlled pretty much every aspect of her life and career, and had her live with in her home and _sleep in her bed._ How is this not a bigger deal? She publicly groomed a child and... everyone's cool with that?
Agreed!! I don’t think Sia intends any harm, but this is CREEPY and Sia holds a LOT of power over her right now with no foreseeable ending. Maddie’s in a really bad position.
@@chancematters This is something people need to understand more: just because an adult isn't a calculating, evil predator doesn't mean they can't have a really harmful relationship with a child. People can even use grooming tactics without realising that's what they're doing. Even if the adult doesn't realise what they're doing is wrong (because they're wrapped up in their own ego / emotionally immature / mentally unwell) that doesn't mean the child doesn't get hurt as a result. Other adults in their circle need to step in. It seems like Maddie should at least have an extended break away from Sia's influence and the chance to develop her own life and identity as a separate person before deciding how/if she wants that relationship to continue. Sia should also have a break away from Maddie to reflect on how she's been approaching this relationship and what she might need to do differently if they want to be close in a healthy way, because at the moment this whole situation is one big red flag, and as the adult this is Sia's responsibility.
@@shockofthenew I don’t like Sia but here I think it’s more mother daughter thing, because as far as I know Sia never had children, which made her “fall in love” with Maddie but she doesn’t understand that she is not her child and that her actions are in fact grooming, it’s sad and scary at the same time
as an autistic person, music reminds me more of these bullies i faced in school who ‘acted autistic’ to mock me 💀 i’m also in pure shock with how this movie depicted deep pressure therapy. you NEVER slam someone onto the ground and crush them like that. especially if they’re having a meltdown, that’s genuinely insane
Maddie’s mum sold her to Abbie at a very young age, she just transferred that ownership to Sia. There is a reason Maddie’s dad wanted full custody of both girls when he divorced Melissa.
The thing is, her admitted over-interest in Maddie Ziegler is weird. If she were an older man, it would be alarm bells everywhere, but women can be predators too. The fact that she admitted to “writing projects just to keep her safe”, couldn’t you just replace the word “safe” with “close”? Then she’s calling Maddie’s mom, inserting herself in her career... idk this story is bizarre. Also- did I hear somewhere that she had Maddie for a sleepover IN THE SAME BED?? If I were her parent my alarm bells would be screaming. In show business, predators are everywhere, and they can be anyone. It’s a sad reality.
She had her dancing in a nude bathing suit to a song about getting wasted and dance with a grown man in next to nothing, filmed both things then put them out in public for EVERYONE in the WORLD to see. And we all know that once something is on the internet it is basically there until the end of time. That's not something most parents would want for their child. It was completely inappropriate and inconsiderate to how Maddie may feel about that once she is old enough to have her own life. Imagine if that was you. Not surprised she's still using Maddie today as her toy and tool. It's totally grooming. Her saying she does it to keep her 'safe' is really meaning to keep her under her control. As someone who was groomed at 20 by an older man, I can say it is extremely damaging. I can't imagine how it would have affected me if I had been a minor. I wish Maddie the best in her life so that she may make her own decisions. Sorry, just had to rant since it really bothers me. Not trying to attack anyone here.
why? if someone is making a movie about any particular topic i don’t find it unreasonable to ensure that person either has experience of their own or has thoroughly researched it. obvs we’re not going to police who can makes movies but sia is a prime example of why
It breaks my heart that Maddie Ziegler was so worried to the point of tears about offending the autistic community before the release of the movie and then it actually ended up coming true. @Uma Li Goldman yea playing people with multiple personalities or autism has a super fine line and this movie crosses the line so much.I feel bad for maddie
I never understood the media’s desire to portray autism as this whimsical, childlike state where those who have it are just these innocent beings who can’t understand the complexities of the outside world. It just seems so patronizing! I have a friend who has autism, but you would never guess that he does if he passed by on the street. He’s an everyday Joe who likes old cars. The only way you could maybe tell is that sometimes he’ll miss a social cue. The only way I found out is because he told me in passing while we were playing a party game, and that was only after we became friends. And, yes, obviously Music has a much worse condition than my friend, but the point is that nonverbal autism is only a portion of the overall community. So when the media constantly harps on the more severe cases of it, it just becomes annoying to sit through. And I can’t imagine people who do have cases as bad as this feel any better, especially since it isn’t even portrayed correctly. Autism impacts the nervous system, impairing the ability to communicate or interact to varying degrees, but it’s not fuckin acid! Shit like this just comes off as demeaning, and I pretty guarantee he would make fun of it if we were to watch it!

I felt as if "music" might be what she suppresses. If that is true she should be bold enough to say it if she is bold enough to make a movie about it. I also thought she made Maddie Ziegler to be a little Sia. Isn't that clear? Am I missing something? Now I haven't seen the movie and because of that I can't and won't take what this review says as fact. I also don't follow Sia or Maddie that much, but it always seemed to me like Sia's music was the cry of her heart and Sia always hid and let "Maddie" be who she really and actually was behind the masking. If Sia is autistic, and honestly I am shocked to see the above video not saying that she is, I always thought she was, then isn't this movie her feeling on herself in a way? Her finding her voice through music? Right or wrong, that's what art is, expression of ones own thoughts to be shared with others in a creative way. Even the quote on it not being ablism as much as it was... I don't know, that quote felt taken out of context to make another point and assumed direction that was beyond biased. So are people canceling her art, her thoughts, or autistic her for not being the right way as an autistic person? I am not even saying Sia knows what to do or that she is doing the right thing. My point is she clearly pours herself into what she creates so that's why she takes this as a personal attack. Autistic or not SIA IS MUSIC. Healthy or not she protects Maddie in the way she wished someone would have protected her. We can't clear up this stuff. God clear it up and help innocent or well meaning people not to be harmed. Forgive us all for the many times we screw up and don't know how to handle ourselves.
As an autistic person, I think I'm ok with non-autistic people playing autistic characters, as long as they do it justice. This, is not that. Obviously not Maddie's fault, I think she was pressured into doing it, but this movie is a complete disaster. Edit, in 2022, New Years: This is the most liked comment I’ve ever posted. 14k and rising, thank you all! Hilariously I think more people like this video than the movie itself.
Agreed, I am autistic too and I would rather the role go to the person who is most qualified to play it via audition. If that person happens to be autistic themselves, fantastic! If they're not, but they do the role justice and portray it accurately, also fantastic! Now, if there is blatant discrimination against an autistic actress/actor without giving them a chance to audition, that's different.
On this note what does everyone think of the portrayal of the autistic character in “The Good Doctor” series (either the Asian version or western one)?
around the 20:28 mark when Sia is talking about "we're here because we care about the autism community" blah blah blah and you can see Leslie Odom Jr. trying so hard to not look dead behind the eyes :-(
The fact that she’s telling autistic people to watch a movie that could cause sensory issues while claiming she’s researched autism is just really infuriating
She didn’t know those obvious things about autism showing that despite of what she said she did no research at all which makes her incompetent or she did know about those things but she didn’t care which makes her ignorant, either way she sucks
@@BigHailFan if she was autistic she would have realized how messes up her work was from the start she would have felt uncomfortable while making it, she taught Maddie how to make the sounds and the stims and it looked awful so she definitely didn’t make a good job because it didn’t come naturally to her as it would for someone who’s autistic, if Sia was autistic she would have said it years before the movie was released because “an autistic person is making a movie about autism” sounds better than “a neurotypical person who has an autistic friend is making a movie about autism”, and even if she is in the spectrum it only makes her case even worse, HOW IGNORANT YOU HAVE TO BE TO MAKE AN INSULTING AND PATRONIZING REPRESENTATION OF YOUR OWN GROUP?!?
I honestly feel so bad for Maddie for being forced into this position. Sia can say she had “final say” but we all know that under that kind of pressure from someone important to us we wouldn’t feel comfortable saying no
Creepy abusive people will always act like the people that are dependent on them can "talk openly about everything" but the moment their victims open their mouth they are talked down, gaslit and just treated with extreme condescension until they give up. Sia strikes me as a person manipulating everyone around her until only the people feeding her with praise are left.
About that... A lot of people did get angry at Maddie, It's just that if you do about 10 minutes of research You find out how misplaced that hate is. So everyone who knows tries to redirect the narrative So that Maddie doesn't become the scapegoat.
The movie was really just made for inspiration porn and the "poor caregivers of these dumb disabled people 🥺🥺🥺" Those are the vibes I got: autistic people are all dumb and childlike and "inanimate objects like wigs" and the 'caregivers' are the poor underrepresented people who need people to bow down and worship their sacrifice
Honestly some autistic adults are loud but generally if you're loud and autistic you're a kid and haven't learned how to control your volume levels. Now i mean with general autism but being on spectrum is different you could be on the autism spectrum and have aspergers syndrome which is different as far as behavior. With autistic ppl they are normally pretty quiet as teenagers and adults, due to there intense sensory issues. This is specifically regarding high functioning autism, i don't have a ton of experience with low functioning or different things on the spectrum. Anyway this is absolutely horrific.
omg it was so difficult to watch and i was literally hitting my ears like crazy just trying to watch it. i couldnt even watch it all the way because i started panicking.
as an autistic person, ive never felt more offended by sia's interpretation of my disorder. no, it can't even be called an interpretation. it's just that horribly god-awful.
I hate how I can just see her being so happy for the "repersentation" and "help" she provided to what she probably saw as a group of "poor, suffering people". So many movies about disabled people are just full of the atmosphere that the person making them thought that making a movie full of ofensive steryotypes about a disorder made them some sort of saviour. It's disgusting. She felt people would lick her feet with how greatful they would be, and when they were offended instead, she went off the deep end.
She acts like nonverbal people can’t express themselves, my school gave nonverbal students tablets that did text to speech and they were all perfectly able to communicate their thoughts
My oldest has a tablet. And the app he uses is a shameful $300 but it works. He can ask for things, they're still working on him expressing himself when he gets upset, and also answering "who what when" questions. But they can! He can! It's a ton of work for him, but I'm so proud of him for doing it.
From my understanding, they have a speech tablet for Music in this movie but for some reason it's extremely, extremely basic and doesn't allow Music to truly express herself. This makes sense as a directorial choice because let's face it, 'Music' is not about understanding the character Music or understanding autism. Music is just a backdrop to Kate Hudson's character development, she's literally treated only as a prop.
@@Kesha102tik LAMP words for life, though your cousins school probably will do a "trial " period with a whole bunch of different tools and see which one is good for them. That said, my son has had great success with lamp
I can kinda see why Sia wanted to hide half her face for a while, unfortunately seeing her talk about this music, full expressions - makes her way less likable when you actually see her as a regular ass person, not this “mystery artist” (I mean she only started wearing the insane wigs once she was skyrocketed into stardom, so a lot of folks didnt know she was pretty popular beforehand. She seemed likable back then, she didnt have an art slave)
as an autistic person, the teeth over the lips, the wide eyes and widening nostrils, the moving hands and other body parts in odd ways - seeing this on maddie ziegler, a neurotypical person, hurts SO deeply. no allistic person understands what stimming and that type of body language feels like for an autistic person and seeing it mocked is so upsetting
I read that even Maddie didn’t want to do this, that she broke down crying on set because she realizes how offensive her portrayal was. But it was Sia’s fault, she forced her to play this role against her will. As an autistic person, I feel sorry for Maddie, she really didn’t want to do this.
I would recommend watching Temple Grandin (in case you haven't seen it before) Claire Danes (event hough she's neurotypical) gives a great performance and her performance shows great respect for the life of Dr. Grandin and the real life Dr. Grandin
EXACTLY. as soon as i saw the "caretaker" who was an ex addict i thought that she was a projection of s*a herself, and the whole "maddie as a daughter but she needs her 24/7" fits in with some of the grooming that people are speculating is going on between sia and maddie.
She's definitely grooming Maddie, not in a sexual way but they quarantined together, had sleepovers and even slept in the same bed?! Nope. Nope nope nope. And I feel so sorry for Maddie, she cried and didn't wanna make fun of them but that witch probably made her.
Yep, grooming can be about emotional relationships or out of a want to control them. Sia is 100% having a power trip over Maddie and I feel so bad for her. I don't blame the actors for any of this, none of them. Sia was the man in charge, she chose to work with autism speaks, she chose to work with an actor not on the spectrum, she made all of the problems on this film and her response on twitter is truly disgusting. I hope Maddie the best and that she able to get away for Sia, because she really needs it.
Dick_Clown_trender she’s def a narcissist to nearly comic proportions. I mean, she appears in her own movie as a savior figure attempting to bring pain meds to the children of Haiti
That's what I think. I've seen some people say it isn't grooming because it may not be sexual but still, it's creepy. I mean, if you cut down the story into its simplest form: a 40-year-old woman went out of her way to invite a teenager into her bed - it doesn't sound harmless anymore.
Literally! I'm all for women looking out for other women, but listening to the way she talked about maddie made my skin crawl. She openly admitted to her desire to shape maddie's world and keep her "safe" by only doing stuff that she approves of. It doesn't help that she directly refers to maddie as her "muse"; the word "muse" has romantic connotations behind it, so it's reaaaaally sus that she used that specific word instead of something more neutral like "inspiration" or something
@Alice Skies regardless of what you think, it doesn't take much to see that Sia's relationship with Maddie is unhealthy. She exerts a concerning amount of control over Maddie's life and decisions and has openly admitted the depth of which she depends on Maddie (such as that she wouldn't make anything if it didnt involve maddie, that she strives to make things specifically for maddie). Sia appears to be concerningly dependent on Maddie, a CHILD. While I personally don't think she's molested Maddie, their relationship doesn't seem to be healthy and it appears that Sia is ignorant of the amount of influence she exerts over maddie's life
@Alice Skies she literally made a movie that was a caricature of the people she supposedly wants to represent and, even more so, was unwatchable by said community and conveyed dangerous ideas, such as the idea that the correct way to handle a meltdown physically pin a person to the ground. I would be more sympathetic if it wasn't obvious that she put minimal effort into ensuring that the community she was trying to represent was represented faithfully and in a way that accurately represents their lives. Obviously, it's impossible to represent every member of the austism community, but making a character composed of a crude amalgamation of various behaviors that doesnt accurately represent anybody is not the way to go. Plus, she teamed up with autism speaks! Even a cursory google search will bring up some pretty suspicious looking stuff and discussions of how harmful of an organization it is. Intentions are an important consideration when judging someone's actions, but we cant ignore the actual consequences. Yes, Sia meant well, but that doesn't erase the harmful messages she spread about austistic individuals through this movie and her hostile responses following it. And as a famous person who puts herself in the public eye, she is not immune to criticism from others. Nobody is immune from the judgement of others, especially when they have done something that is harmful to others
It's sad how this is what a lot of people think about autism, even doctors sometimes. It's so shitty. People are not a list of symptoms. You have to actually see them and listen to them and talk to them to understand what they're like. Folks don't even stop to think how these "symptoms" actually affect our lives. For instance, I have never seen an autistic character in which the whole "can't tell when people are lying" thing actually makes them LESS trusting of people or paranoid. Ya know why? Because no one ever _thinks_ about it.
To all the future filmmakers and the ones that are working right now if you’re going to make a story about the artistic character get artistic people to help you or write it because Nortypical people can show a proper perspective even if they try really hard so if you want a accurate and good representation of us on the autistic spectrum get autistic riders producers actors and anyone else that is autistic because the best way to show the perspective of someone in a marginalised community is to get people from the marginalised community to write act and tell or help with the story
@ I completely understand where you’re coming from example I am autistic and I am really don’t know much about it but that’s mainly because I only been told for about a couple of years now I was just putting out my personal opinion so yeah hope I didn’t upset you
theory: sia's fantasy is being an autism mom, thats why she casted maddie as the autistic person, made all the promotion about her, and then only gave depth to the neurotypical people who had to take care of her
That’s where Autism Speaks fits like a fucking glove. This movie is about perpetuating pity for those who have to suffer through supporting an autistic person. That’s why it’s easy for Sia to say “we made this with love for the autistic community” - because AS puts caregivers at the center of the autistic community and actual autistic people at the periphery. It almost makes sense how she was able to delude herself into believing this was what the community wanted, as long as she was only paying attention to a fraction of the community.
It's insane how 1998's Cube, a sci-fi thriller movie with all kinds of violence, nihilism, and death, still has a far superior portrayal of autism than this movie. Kazan is far from realistic, but he still has an ACTUAL purpose in the movie and even a couple great scenes.
Yes believe it or not some people dont like musicals. Its not an insult to those who do them. I dont like songs with whispering in it, but i dont justin bieber would be offended if i said that in front of him
@@deetgrogstin Uh, there's not liking musicals and being respectful, and then there's being in a call with someone who worked in a musical and saying instead of "oh I dislike musicals." She says "I hate hate hate musicals!" It's just kinda rude. Yeah you may hate songs that whisper, but when would you EVER say that to Bieber's face? You probably wouldn't, you'd keep your mouth shut, you wouldn't even bring that up. Also, even if you DID bring it up, you'd say it exactly as you said here: "I don't like songs with whispering in it" that's a respectable way to express distaste. You wouldn't say "I hate hate hate songs with whispering!" C'mon, have some common sense. The words you use, who you say them to, and how all matter.
I am really concerned about Maddie's mental health. She's been taught and possibly forced to almost completely rely on Sia (or so it seems) and this has been going on for years.
Sis has been grooming Maddie since she first took notice. Something has been off with them since she did the video for elastic heart with Shia. That video was weird to me. Maddies mother sold her out to sia for any piece of fame. Let’s call it what it is. Sia doesn’t want Maddie dealing with anyone else. She’s using that whole “I’m keeping her safe” bull bc she’s obsessed with her and she’s afraid of losing her.
Yeah it’s weird Maddie doesn’t do anything but sia projects. Missy Elliot had Alyson Stoner as a dancer in her videos but never held her back from opportunities and she was acting in other films. Sia is literally blocking her. She probably missed a ton of opportunities.
The video was elastic heart I think you're referring to, but I absolutely agree. I remember watching it thinking what the F is this??? It made me extremely uncomfortable tbh
@Riley Sanders it means establishing an emotional connection with the child, which can sometimes lead to sexual abuse. They’re in the fourth stage of grooming. I’m not gonna be surprised if Maddie comes out with some claims sia did something. She creeps me out and her obsessions to isolate Maddie is nuts to me. Stages of grooming: Stage 1: Targeting a Victim. ✔️ (Maddie) Stage 2: Gaining Trust. ✔️(becomes obsessed) Stage 3: Filling a Need.✔️(sia felt like she NEEDED to save Maddie, when she was filling a need for herself, can’t say what though) Stage 4: Isolating the Child. ✔️(only wants Maddie to do only her projects so she can “protect her”) Stage 5: Sexual Contact. Stage 6: Maintaining Control. Other two haven’t happened yet. Come on..signs are there..🤷🏾♀️
You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t have autism, but I have experienced breakdowns in the past. What type of parent would film and PUBLICLY POST videos of their own children in immense distress?? That pisses me off.
I have autism, and if I remember well, my mom took videos of my breakdowns when I was a kid because my doctor told her to? Still kinda insulting, if I'm being honest
No parent can avoid making mistakes, especially when they are completely lost about what they have to do. Parents of autistic children can be more lost than any parent with "normal" child, often even more than with other special conditions as lake of communication can be pretty strong with ASD. I don't know where is the boundary between toxicity, simple desperate mistake, cry for help... it's very hard to tell, IMO this is a matter of case by case evaluation.
One day, when Maddie is no longer with SIA, there will be interviews and books about how creepy and weird shit is. If SIA was a man, no one would tolerate this kind of shit.
I think it would be creepy if maddie was a boy or if it was a man and a girl. It makes a little more sense that maddie would be her protege. Not saying that their relationship isn't inappropriate
does anyone else thinks its super weird an adult woman, who isn't her mother is VERY VERY protective and LATCHED onto a 14 year old girl? I found that to be super super disturbing and absolutley creepy! She isn't her daughter but she acts like this 14 year old girl is hers
The thing is that she doesn't act like it's her own daughter, it's something else, her 'muse' as she calls it. If she acted like her mother she wouldn't be in this messto begin with, and would let her work with other people. There is a difference between helping someone grow and being possessive over them.
you can sense how weird it is by changing one word, from “woman” to “men”. double standards are crazy, how much would’ve changed in the reaction of the media? i’m scared for maddie, and considering how fucked up the industry is i wouldn’t be surprised
Sia's obsessive maternal saviour complex is so fucking weird, it's really creepy and it just gives me the heebies. like in principle it's fine, but something about the way she talks about and treats Maddie like a pet or a doll or something just creeps me the fuck out. how is nobody talking about this grown woman just straight up grooming an impressionable child??? slumber parties?? sleeping in the same bed? creating roles just so she can be around her as much as possible??? I don't like to play this card but if it was a man doing and saying the things she does then this would be a very different discussion.
if it were a man with a 14 year old boy doing these things he would be tagged as a pedophile and never get a job around children again and get a knocking at the door by the police.
@@cmootrey That’s exactly what I thought, and the same with Liz Gillies’ husband. Sleeping in the same bed for years with m1ñ0r$ and having them constantly over your house even after they are legal adults is gross.
Frankly, the teeth-over-the-lips portrayal was reminiscent for me of Amanda Bynes’ sketch show on Nickelodeon where she would portray a mentally damaged hillbilly.

I’m not autistic, but I met an autistic girl once while I was in a psych ward. She was covered in bruises, head to toe. Any silver of skin that she showed was purple. I learned two things from Jessica. One, autistic people are fucking strong. At one point, the hospital I was at put me and Jessica in a room together. She was mostly non verbal, and when she did speak all she would say is “Florida” and things about animals. I thought she was harmless to me, I was very very wrong. She ended up getting a bit overstimulated and she ended up having an episode and clocked me right in the shoulder. Second, she taught me a lot about humanity. The nurses, to get Jessica to calm down during her episodes, would tell her that she was going home, she was going to get to see her mom again. That was a lie.
@@Charl._.s1ms unfortunately, Jessica will never be able to differentiate the truth from lies. She will keep believing them, no matter what. Because it’s what she hopes, that it’s true, that she will go home
It always creeps me out when people are obsessed with the idea of "purity". I know it's unfounded, but it always gives me pedovibes when I hear people glorify purity
Without context, I fully agree with you. However, it really comes down to the reason it's being praised. For example, a person could be referring to racial purity, genetic purity, purity of perception, or many different forms of purity which have nothing to do with sexual purity, but even that isn't inherently a bad thing. Purity, regardless of form, is something that can never be recovered once it's lost, which makes it precious. A glass of pure water is ruined once a speck of dust lands in the water. Although you could theoretically filter the dust out, the water itself has been affected by the mere presence of the dust, and it will never regain its prior status as a pure glass of water. This is actually one of the problems that the NSDAP ran into when they implemented the Nuremberg Laws. Because of the lack of racial purity, they ended up authorizing Reich Citizenship to be given to people who had up to 50% jewish blood. If it was that hard to find purity in the mid 1930s, just imagine how much harder it is today. However, I do believe that this Sia character may indeed have the potential to become a pedophile, if she is not already. That bit about sharing a bed with a child was seriously crossing the line.
@@marybutler9250 I suppose it is quite a controversial topic, even if unnecessarily so. That said, I'm not going to stand on a soapbox and attempt to convince you that I am correct and that you are wrong. No, I believe that everybody should look at the facts, consider the evidence, and draw their own conclusions. If you decide to look further into this matter, I assure you it will be interesting.
Yeah like i am autistic and if someone would say im "pure" i would think something like "what the actual fuck just shut up" (And im not pure to make that clear)
@@midnightshadow1491 by trying to show how there's nice ways of 'purism worship' you just furthered our argument. The idea of purity could be represented in other terms... innocence, naivety... The idea of purity, of a 'natural, original state' we should return to is so stupid (specially 'cause it has no connection to factual reality). Your examples have just shown us that any type of necro-cult of purity points to a fucked up mindset...
I have a bad feeling that Maddie will have a difficult adulthood hopefully it does not lead to addiction or death. She's extremely talented. Having said, I have a bad feeling that _Dancing Moms_ and her work with Sia excluding MUSIC will not age well. _Chandelier_ is a beautiful song and video. Let's hope the best for Maddie and hoping she could get a restraining order from working with Sia ever again.
It's a terrifying awful feeling to have a creepy obsession with someone... that's stalking. I know that, we all know that. Humans are humans, they need space.
When they said “She’s incapable of change” I think what they meant was “Her autism isn’t something to be “cured” “It’s part of who she is” They really should’ve have phrased that better 😬
Even though the movie had Autism Speaks, an organisation that researches looking for a cure for autism (eugenics as it's referred to in the search engine), consulted for it. That's why Autism Speaks uses a puzzle piece for its logo.
@@מעין-צ9ג except she did "three years of research" working on a whole ass movie without realizing how harmful Autism Speaks is. As someone who is autistic and uses headphones a LOT because of volume and noise sensitivity inssues. This is disgusting. Not just because the actor isnt autistic, but because when People criticised it, she Kept fighting back and trying to justice yourself. She made a movie that was supposed to celebrate autistic People, but didnt work with autistic People because it was “too hard”. Yikes. Also, id she wants to make stuff for maddie, make stuff for maddie. Not autistic People. I actually wanna scream at the fact that sia is SO bad at portraying autism that she worked with autism speaks. An organisation who advokatens for cures for autism, and made a movie saying autism Will “ruin Your marriage”. And a group Anyone who does two seconds of research could find out is a bad organisation. Autism, believe it or not, doesnt impact Your life to an Extreme amount (at least depending on what kind you have). Even stuff that does impact me, like my food sensitivity issues and headphones, i dont see as Big parts of my life. Thats just how i am and how i work. But to others those Seem like giant and terrible parts of my life.
Sia as the adult in the situation promised Maddie no one would be offended when she expressed concern, as if, that’s something she could promise about anything let alone something this controversial. Honestly Maddie is a victim. She handled the situation about as well as she could have.
I was the same age as maddie when she said this and it triggered me so much also, it made me feel scared and uneasy since i love maddie so much. I really hope everyone would just stop controlling and exploiting maddie, i really wish the best for her
I also think it's basically guilt-tripping Maddie into never ever leaving her or doing projects Sia doesn't approve of or turning to something else other than dancing. Sia basically just has to say "But I'll never do music again without you!" and Maddie will feel guilty for even wanting something else.
It doesn’t have to be sexual for someone to groom kids. This obsession with being Maddie’s “bonus mom” is reeeeaaally disturbing. Maddie’s parents really need to keep her far away from sia as possible

It sounds like Music is the kind of movie that is based on 'research' that is outdated since before Rain Man was first released.
@@3baxcb it's like the kind of stuff you'd hear from those moms of autistic kids who blame everything on the autism and treat their kids like npcs
I'm so glad other people are seeing this is a weird and unhealthy relationship...
Melissa let her have a really unhealthy relationship with Abby for years so really it’s not surprising at all
It's the level of posessiveness.
(I don't get it...)

this sounds like a toxic relationship where they're trying to isolate their partner so they don't ever leave them
Yup
That's exactly what it is. An adult having such an obsession with a teenager who isn't related to them is not an okay situation and is most definitely toxic.
It sounds like she's been grooming Maddie to use her to profit.
And convinced her to not take another opportunity because she felt it wasn't right for her... seriously controlling behaviour!

Imagine if Sia was a man, people would’ve been calling to cancel her a lot sooner. Very creepy

If Sia was a dude, Maddie would've been ripped away from Sia long ago.

Jesus Christ, imagine if a man did any of this... Especially having her sleep in the same bed, that's just insane.
@@shockofthenew I don’t like Sia but here I think it’s more mother daughter thing, because as far as I know Sia never had children, which made her “fall in love” with Maddie but she doesn’t understand that she is not her child and that her actions are in fact grooming, it’s sad and scary at the same time

Maddie Ziegler’s mother has seemingly sold her daughter to Sia.
Seemingly 💀💀💀 she def sold her
Well Abbey Lee Miller went to jail, so she had to make money somehow
Lucky Epstein lowballed
Maddie’s mum sold her to Abbie at a very young age, she just transferred that ownership to Sia. There is a reason Maddie’s dad wanted full custody of both girls when he divorced Melissa.
Am I the only one who finds it so weird that they sleep in the same bed ?? If the genders where reversed .....
It’s a sad reality.
they also have sleepovers. and have for years. it’s so fuckingn gross.
they've slept in the same bed together... I'm really concerned for Maddie being around her so much
She had her dancing in a nude bathing suit to a song about getting wasted and dance with a grown man in next to nothing, filmed both things then put them out in public for EVERYONE in the WORLD to see.

A: Have Autism

And, there are people who are non autistic that play autistic characters very well! BUT YOU HAVE TO FIND THOSE PEOPLE!

Where to watch the movie
@Blank Space ?
My thoughts exactly, I couldn't have said that any better myself if I tried
I always thought Sia was autistic and masking, but as the artist she truly is as the chosen mask. Being in that world of autism people are going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise.

Sia very much reminds me of Mother Gothel here and I don't like this.
@Alice Skies calm TF down
@Alice Skies regardless of what you think, it doesn't take much to see that Sia's relationship with Maddie is unhealthy.

Of course the movie isn't about the autistic person, but how the others have to "deal" with them.
To all the future filmmakers and the ones that are working right now if you’re going to make a story about the artistic character get artistic people to help you or write it because Nortypical people can show a proper perspective even if they try really hard so if you want a accurate and good representation of us on the autistic spectrum get autistic riders producers actors and anyone else that is autistic because the best way to show the perspective of someone in a marginalised community is to get people from the marginalised community to write act and tell or help with the story

theory: sia's fantasy is being an autism mom, thats why she casted maddie as the autistic person, made all the promotion about her, and then only gave depth to the neurotypical people who had to take care of her
That’s where Autism Speaks fits like a fucking glove.
Beside the point, but Sia saying "I hate hate hate hate live musicals" directly to Leslie Odom Jr. is truly something else.
e x c u s e m e a r e y o u a a r o n b u r r s i r

She's been taught and possibly forced to almost completely rely on Sia (or so it seems) and this has been going on for years.
not to mention from what i heard her relationship with kenzie her lil sis isnt always great and kenzie was the one who leaked pics of maddie
@Call Me AK it’s not normal to have sleepovers with adults
Strong Jacko vibes.
@@emma_nutella58 I had sleepovers with adults, and I ensure you nothing weird happened. But yeah, this can be a potential red flag...
@@Nephelis But were they with a single adult with no other kids w/ you?
@@racheal3538 thank you
@Riley Sanders that’s not what grooming is. It’s not just sexual.
✔️ (Maddie)
Stage 2: Gaining Trust. ✔️(becomes obsessed)
Stage 3: Filling a Need.✔️(sia felt like she NEEDED to save Maddie, when she was filling a need for herself, can’t say what though)
Stage 4: Isolating the Child. ✔️(only wants Maddie to do only her projects so she can “protect her”)
Stage 5: Sexual Contact.
Stage 6: Maintaining Control.
Other two haven’t happened yet.
Come on..signs are there..🤷🏾♀️
as an autistic person, seeing how restrainment is handled in this movie is completely terrifying.
It freaked me out, and I'm not even diagnosed autistic.
same
You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t have autism, but I have experienced breakdowns in the past. What type of parent would film and PUBLICLY POST videos of their own children in immense distress?? That pisses me off.
The kind of people that believe that children should love their parents no matter what.
I have autism, and if I remember well, my mom took videos of my breakdowns when I was a kid because my doctor told her to?
Still kinda insulting, if I'm being honest
All children deserve parents, not all parents deserve children.
My parents try to talk to me during an outbreak, 100% better than recording it in any way
No parent can avoid making mistakes, especially when they are completely lost about what they have to do.
You're absolutely right
I think it would be creepy if maddie was a boy or if it was a man and a girl. It makes a little more sense that maddie would be her protege. Not saying that their relationship isn't inappropriate
well yeah no shit if she was a man everyone would be like somewhat uneasy
@@hinatashimeluv7464 Maddie was 14 when this was filmed and is only 17 now...she’s still a girl.
True that. I feel like people don't touch on how women can be that way enough.
does anyone else thinks its super weird an adult woman, who isn't her mother is VERY VERY protective and LATCHED onto a 14 year old girl? I found that to be super super disturbing and absolutley creepy! She isn't her daughter but she acts like this 14 year old girl is hers
No not really.
@Grace I highly doubt it
The thing is that she doesn't act like it's her own daughter, it's something else, her 'muse' as she calls it.

It's absolutely disgusting, yeah

Literally
She's 100% grooming her
Yeah, who ever heard of smth like that happening
Sia's obsessive maternal saviour complex is so fucking weird, it's really creepy and it just gives me the heebies. like in principle it's fine, but something about the way she talks about and treats Maddie like a pet or a doll or something just creeps me the fuck out. how is nobody talking about this grown woman just straight up grooming an impressionable child??? slumber parties?? sleeping in the same bed? creating roles just so she can be around her as much as possible??? I don't like to play this card but if it was a man doing and saying the things she does then this would be a very different discussion.
Theres some sort of abuse going on in here for sure its just... Too goddamn creepy to be anything else, we need to report this to the police.
Yeah, I get a real Michael Jackson / Neverland Ranch vibe
if it were a man with a 14 year old

Damn jessica now has trust issues probs

@@midnightshadow1491 I'm sorry dude but... With maybe the water being the exception, all your examples of purity are equally unsettling.
@@marybutler9250 I suppose it is quite a controversial topic, even if unnecessarily so. That said, I'm not going to stand on a soapbox and attempt to convince you that I am correct and that you are wrong.
The obsession with Maddie is SO CREEPY. I feel so bad for Maddie because sia pressured her into playing the role even as a CHILD.
When they said
“She’s incapable of change”
I think what they meant was
“Her autism isn’t something to be “cured”
“It’s part of who she is”
They really should’ve have phrased that better 😬
