I haven't seen anyone wearing the BB58 except on the web. Everyone is wearing a smartwatch except me it seems. Mechanical watches are more niche than we think.
More and more people are wearing mechanical watches nowadays. There used to he an uptrend with smartwatch but it has fallen behind as the lack of status people attach to a wrist computer in the minds of the people. If a man wants to where jewelry with some masculinity, a real watch is more and more to be considered the way to go in the city landscape.
I was on a flight last month and saw 3 subs on just that one leg. A hulk, a gold and blue, and a standard one. I truly feel like steel sports watches and growing in popularity.
I haven't seen one in the wild either. I actually wear a BB ETA Black and feel that's the better buy and the watch that kinda put Tudor back on the map, at least in the US market.
The BB58 was my most worn watch in 2020. In 2021 I bought a no date sub. And then sold the sub because I prefer the BB58. I didn't settle for the BB58 vs. the sub, I prefer it. To me the BB58 provides a much better look and fit.
would you mind elaborating? i've been eyeing the no-date as a grail piece and currently own a BB58. I've tried on a more modern 40mm date sub and it just barely fits my wrist. Like most, a Sub is almost a mandatory piece for a collection. However, my primary qualm with the no-date is the overall age of most pieces available for sale...I'm not looking to get one and have to service it sooner than later. Also, the prices are crazy right now. Thanks!
exactly my thoughts, the Sub suddenly seems boring when compared to the BB58, a lot of people just can't get over the Rolex snobbery and dismiss everything from Tudor because apparently "you just buy Tudor because you couldn't get a Rolex"...and that's coming from someone that owns watches from both brands.
I have the BB58. I bought it for myself to enjoy and only for myself. It’s a great watch for the money, and I could not care less about the hype, if it’s too popular, social opinions etc.
Buying a watch or car based on UA-cam influencers and impressing other people sets you up for nothing but disappointment and buyer's remorse. buy what YOU love, not what you think others will. That's all this video really needed to tell us.
It's a great watch at an accessible price point, and situation. That makes it much easier for people to try it out. If they don't like it, they can quickly get out of it without taking too much of a bath. Tudor is a great brand that makes excellent watches.
I’ve very recently purchased a BB58. I personally love it and in my opinion it’s the best diver watch for the money. It’s extremely well built, in house calibre, and 5 year warranty is fantastic! It’s certainly my favourite. I also don’t see this as a cheap Rolex Submariner, I find it’s entirely different. Completely different movement and the Tudor has much more vintage styling which I absolutely prefer. Tudor rocks, I absolutely am interested in more!
Yeah, hold onto it. Don't let people talk you into selling it. For example, just because everyone has a sub doesn't mean the sub is worthless either. It's a benchmark for a reason, and so is the BB58.
All's fun till you realize the movement isn't really in-house. Tudor funded and put together a third party team in a separate company to design and produce these movements. So long as Tudor doesn't produce or design their own movements as in vertical integration, MT movements are not in house. No wonder Breitling, Chanel and other watches use "Tudor in-house" movements. They're literally not in-house. Also, note how Tudor refuses to use that terminology on their website, instead italicizing the term "Manufacture" and adding asterisks wherever this is present. They're legally not allowed to veil the movements as produced by them.
@@octoman_games I’ve never seen it but I doubt he is that influential to impact Tudor sales, I don’t think people are dumping them anyway. They were hard to get and now they’re available easily enough, I think it’s natural more will end up for sale now
In summary two points. 1) Market is oversaturated with them, so they lost their charm; 2) Some people get it as a substitute for sub, but it doesn't quite match up.
As long as it would take me to save for a luxury watch, I'm not going to be in the mood to play the waiting list game at a Rolex AD. So the BB is a very compelling proposition, and it has all the classic good looks that I would want. Sounds like the BB could be an even better value in the near future.
Don't hesitate, grab the BB58. You won't be disappointed. I haven't worn my Submariner since I got the 58. It's much more interesting to look at (the black, gold and gilt dial just looks fantastic) , keeps perfect time and whether you're in T shirt and jeans or suited and booted the 58 looks great. It's the most versatile watch I own and is never off my wrist.
Majority of people have no clue what they like, only what they have been told to like. This has been magnified through social media. That’s why everyone is stuck on the same watches from the same brands. Example the BB58. It’s a real shame because there are so many great brands ( Fortis, Sinn, all the under $1,000 Swatch group brands…etc) with unique offerings at a compelling price. It’s always the same half a dozen brands being chased after by the cool kids and everyone else follows.
One of the main reasons there are so many new/barely used Tudors on Ebay, Marketplace etc is because for one to get a Rolex, one has to more than likely buy a Tudor first, or a watch like an Omega Seamaster if the AD also carries Omega. Once one gets the call that the steel Rolex has arrived (if one is lucky to get the call) then the Tudor and the Omega get sold at a loss, but a much smaller loss that if one buys the a rolex from a grey dealer. Let's say I want a Rolex Sub, retail $8100. I buy a Tudor black bay and an Omega seamaster on strap for $8500, once the Sub arrives I sell both the Tudor and the Omega for $6500 or a little more. I lost 2k, but if I get the Sub from a grey I will overpay 5k or more. And I have a full set with my name on the papers. Sad reality, but Rolex is sacrificing the Tudor brand watches by forcing people who want a steel Rolex to buy them
@@SirMopy True, and if you keep the 1 or 2 watches you had to buy then that's great. But my point was around the many who buy 1 or 2 watches and then sell them at a discount because they just wanted the Rolex. That affects the Brands of the watches you are selling.
My heart loves this watch….its part of my collection and ill probably never get rid of it. I bought my BB58 for the right reason. It truly appeals to me, that’s the way I’ve bought all my watches. Too many people today think of watches as an investment and want to turn around and flip them. Probably why the gray market is so inflated.
Your comments are very interesting, and they made me rejoice once more (like I even needed to) at my decision to drop all my social media profiles a while back. It is amazing the effect that they can have over the perceived value of any given item. My collection includes all of the three watches you mentioned and luckily I have no idea as to how exciting or boring they might be regarded in the community, which leaves me the opportunity of appreciating them just for what they actually are and what they mean to me. Actually, I would suggest another reason why people might be dumping their standard, black dial BB58: Tudor is coming out with many variations on that theme, which are by nature more rare and thus more appealing. I'm on the waiting list for a bronze one myself and briefly considered dropping the black dial once I will get that that one; but then I figured what the hell, it's a great and very capable watch and will have a specific place in the collection even after its brother gets here.
I don't care too much about what the majority of people are talking about, social media, etc, I have my own opinion and taste. I bought the BB Black (41mm) 2 and a half years ago and the BB GMT one year ago. I'm really happy and delighted with both watches and I don't think that I will sell them. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Tudor are fantastic watches. The problem is that too many people view them as a cheaper alternative to Rolex. They are basically the Porsche Boxster of the watch world. A poor persons version of the the better item that they only buy because you can't afford what they REALLY want. Which is actually ridiculous. Poor people don't wear Tudor watches nor do they drive Porsches.
I absolutely love the bb58. They’re readily available right now in the UK too. In black and blue. I love both! I’d also like to note, I’ve seen a lot online but never seen anyone wearing one IRL so definitely wouldn’t say they are a common sight like a mustang in the US
absolutely. and ... the BB58 is a beautifully engineered and reliable tool watch with some real provenance and desirability. The Mustang is a mass produced piece of garbage Americana which is designed to help not very bright, financially compromised low self esteem Americans feel better about their lot.
Over saturation is an issue. One reason I can't understand why black subs are so popular. They are by far the most common watch in Canary Wharf yet people are willing to drop over 10k on one.
Yeah whatever point he was trying to make there didn't make any sense. Most people don't give a fuck about watches, even less people would be able to notice a bb58. They are not a common thing to see at all
I saw the heritage black bay come out some years ago while I was a freshman in uni and knew I wanted it. Before I knew it, I'm a graduate and working in accounting, and BOOM the BB58 comes out 2018 slimmer, smaller, exclusive movement to the series... Ran to the AD to grab one as my first luxury watch and it has been on my wrist every day since. I didn't even give the other brands a thought when the AD suggested them, heck he gave me a seamaster, a Longines and some other luxury art deco watch to try on. Just wasn't for me. Pushed em aside for the one I knew I'd always want and didn't regret it. In different positions mine is regulated to -3/+1, I have kept mine almost exactly to the second every month, only moving the hands to adjust daylight savings. I'll wear this one in with a nice patina all over and pass it down to my son/daughter.
I bet you wont. You will get a promotion some extra caysh and boom, next grail watch wash repeat 50 or so times. Congrats welcome to the addiction, it is fun as hell!!
The Tudor Black Bay 58 is a remarkable watch in and of itself, in all of it's incarnations. I think many enthusiasts like to flip, trade, trade up, etc., and since the BB58 is a popular watch, there are simply more of them out there to sell. Same with the Speedy. It's everywhere for a reason besides social media- it's an important and technically marvellous watch. IG and the interwebs are a magnifier, but that's all. You're right- Definitely don't buy a BB58 instead of a Sub, but I see people buy a BB58 first, enjoy it, then sell it to put themselves closer to something else. Or keep it forever because it's awesome. 🤷🏻♂️
Most "watchguys" are usually sheep that buy what they are told is good vs buying what they truly like. After acquiring a certain watch, they soon realize that it doesn't live up to the hype and end up flipping it, especially if they overpaid. Then they repeat the cycle with another overhyped watch.
I'm more interested in the marketing and consumer behavior than the watches themselves. In a desperate move to stop the bleeding from the quartz crises, taking decades to transition, the Swiss watch industry switched from tool to jewelry. Now the luxury watch consumer has become acclimated to the high price points. My thought is overall, all Swiss watches, volume of sales have tumbled to about 1/4 of its peak and the higher price points have helped the industries bottom line. The Swiss are still perceived as the most desirable in terms of luxury and craftsmanship but the latter is changing. Even China, a low tier maker, can't afford to stay in that position much longer because of rising costs. I would agree hype, emotion and social standing affects the Swiss luxury watch market greatly.
I have found you're EXACTLY right in terms of HOW BRAINLESSLY LED some people are. I used to watch the watchfinder channel and at least twice they showed watches that were BUTCHERED crap, you could see it RIGHT THERE on the screen how bad the quality was. And then the comments would be 98% POSITIVE. I remember watching one that had an engraved and skeletonised movement and they had made a REAL mess of it, and one comment was "this watch is so incredibly made that I had to clean my screen and watch a second time!". Only a few comments told the truth and pointed out all the screw ups, for people to DEFEND the screw ups on a watch that was nearly 10 THOUSAND bucks! FAR TOI MANY of these people are the types who could be served poop and told it was chocolate icecream and BELIEVE it. I saw a video on another channel where it MAINLY showed ROBOTS making the watch to then go into the comments and see stuff MARVELLING about how it was FULLY HANDMADE.... meanwhile eBay is ABSOLUTELY FLOODED with old USSR watches that were ACTUALLY FULLY hand assembled with mechanically automated lathes making the cogs, and ALMOST NONE of these guys are interested! I have seen the ACTUAL footage from the 50s or 60s of these HUGE long hand assembly lines of Russian women making these watches all dressed in white. I also have a swiss watch myself that is a pin pallet of junk quality, along with my father who has a ton of broken swiss pin pallet watches from his parents and grandparents.
Nobody is “dumping” blackbay58’s”…..Hilarious… and if they are they are people that are swayed by people like You making them Think they need a Rolex sub instead as though the Tudor is sub standard, the bb58 is pound for pound one of the best watches in the market today.. no question. You have to wonder if Rolex is really worth the premium one pays for a watch that isn’t too dissimilar to the bb58 yet 4 or 5 times the price
Bb58 is a great watch. Right there with the modern Rolex Explorer as far as a perfect one watch collection. It sends a luxury message but is not ostentatious like some other models/brands. You get all the ups and none of the downs with this watch.
I feel the same way about all Rolex. Everyone either wants or has one. When I got into the watch collecting game, Rolex watches seemed so common that they held no desire for me. That hasn't changed. Instead I go for high quality, but lesser known (purchased) brands like NOMOS. The value proposition of Nomos for the quality and relative rarity makes for a very unique experience. That said, as you have stated in many of your videos, buy what you like for you, not for others. Excellent vid as always 👍🏼
Honestly while they are well made I don't think most Rolexes are all that attractive. I think Omega makes nicer looking watches at a better price point.
Oh I'd love this "mustang" everybody has. I'd say Casio is a watch everybody has. In the watch snob world it is the Rolex and the celebrities carry Rolex as a statement of their success. I'd say BB58 is a classical timepiece for everyone and those who do not want to buy and carry Rolex.
I have a Tudor P01, and chose it over the gmt and the bb58 simply because i will destroy an aluminum bezel almost instantly while wearing it. The P01 has a steel bezel and still uses the in-house movement, it’s quirky which i love, and i never ever see anyone else wearing one. Absolutely love it.
I live in nj and besides my own I only saw 1 person with a black bay.I bought a bb58 blue a year ago and a Rolex Ad called me 2 months ago if I still wanted the submariner I put my name down for.Of course I bought that too and let me tell you I love my Tudor bb 58 more after getting the sub because it made me realize how much watch you get for the money.I admit my sub and op39mm almost doubled in value while Tudor stayed the same but as my wife says you will never sell them so it doesn’t matter. If it is hard for you to get a sub because of your financial situation Tudor Black Bay is the best watch to get. Also I think Tudor bb has much better build quality than older submariners
So basically, your buying habits are dictated by what those around you are purchasing. You are not buying watches or cars for their intrinsic value or your subjective desire, but are making decisions based on your concern of the opinions of those around you. What the hell?? If a watch is of high quality, looks good and I want to buy it, I buy it. Not once would it enter my head “yea, nah, not buying this because it’s just all over Insta”. I don’t care if one person owns it or a million, I buy what I want.
That's good news, meaning that the regular guy still can manage to purchase it, not worrying the price will shoot up. And if its still too far for you to reach, do consider the Seiko SPB143. At the end of the day, youre the one wearing and enjoys your own watch, not anybody else.
I bought a Seiko 143 first but the time was very far off and every few days and I was adjusting it. Every week it was about 5 minutes off and I wore it everyday for 6months. The same accuracy for my 151 Capt Willard reissue unfortunately. I bought the BB58 (the 143 and BB58 are similar in style) and the time is perfect. BB58 is 4x the price but the accuracy is the perfection and what I was looking for in a watch. My BB58 gains only a second a day similar to my Seiko solar (quartz) divers. I love the no date too. The BB58 hasn’t left my wrist since I bought it. I’m glad someone dumped it to me.
If Tudor would put a version of the glide lock on the BB lineup they would be close to perfect. I sold my BB because of the bracelet. Found myself always picking up the hulk instead. once you go glidelock it’s hard to wear anything else…especially in summer heat.
I absolutely hate the social media oversaturation. It creates hype and guides the general public in certain directions. Now people are after the same watches, and they have lost their identities. They've bought things others like, not necessarily what they would have bought had they not seen social media.
I agree with one key point - if what you really want is the Sub, don't buy the BB as a more attainable alternative. Get the BB because you want the BB.
This might be another reason the Black Bay 58 is starting to get flipped or will be soon. You are so right about social media falling in love and making the Tudor BB 58 it's darling. The effect is that a lot of first time luxury watch buyers get drawn into this model. When people are first time buyers of luxury they love what they buy and even go back to the videos or reviews that got them interested in the watch in the first place. But sooner or later these buyers start eyeing other great watches and even question their purchase. Purchasing your first luxury watch means being fairly new to watch buying. It's not easy making the perfect choice especially when everyone is telling you what the perfect watch is. I know this because I was one of those people that finally flipped my 41 mm Tudor Black Bay. If you don't know you could buy a very good pre-owned Black Bay 41 mm with box and papers and bracelet for $2,000 5-6 years ago.
It is true. People are dumping these watches. I bought 10 last week for less than $25 each. I give them away as Christmas and birthday presents. People think I am a big spender.
I do want the Submariner, but I just bought the Black Bay 58 to wear until I can get my hands on a Sub. This will be my "jeans and a tee shirt" watch. The Sub will be something special... If I ever get one!
I have several watches including a Submariner and a Datejust. I pretty much exclusively wear the BB58 that I picked up slightly used for £2k. I think it's just beautiful, it keeps amazingly accurate time and I think it is far more interesting and beautiful to look at than either of my Rolex's. It is also phenomenal value for money. I'll never sell my BB58, it's a timeless classic and will look just as good in 30 years time as it does today. I might however sell my Sub as it's just been sat in its box for the last year since it got ousted by the BB58.
Yeah I can see that- my issue with Rolexes is that the market values them more than I do. I enjoyed my last Rolex until people were offering me twice what I felt it was worth. I’d rather have a bb58 and a Reverso than a sub (no date).
@@Michael-te6tb they’re about for that sort of price, I’ve seen a few on Instagram from people I follow. Usually on a bracelet would be a bit more but they’re out there with good prices now the initial hype has died down
@Michael-te6tb bought a bb58 blue on ebay a year ago for exactly 2k pounds little worn ! Don't see any at that price now ! Starting from 2.5k gbp now it seems ?
I have this watch and I think it's a fantastic watch. I've been a watch collector for around 12 years now. I find it unfair to compare this to the rolex sub. I feel over the past few years the rolex has moved further away from pure watch collectors to people who have come into a few ££ and want to show that wealth. I feel Tudor is much more towards loving watches for being watches and not value. I am wearing the back bay as I type this. Only one other watch in my collection do I prefer over it and that is my Speedmaster. Guys, please dont get caught in the hype of which watch brand it more expensive than the other. Wear watches because you love them because they connect with you regardless of the RRP. I love watches and never, ever look down on anyone elses brand. I can appreciate each watch as an individual. All the best. Thank you to the author for this well made video.
As an owner of a BB58, I wouldn’t say the Submariner is a competitor. They’re completely different experiences on the wrist. I actually feel like the BB58 feels more refined. The Sub feels to me much more if a bombproof tool watch. BB58 is thinner, smaller, no crown guards, rose gold accents, decoration on the bracelet (faux rivets)… etc. the solution, get both!
But this video never said these 2 are competitors. He just said the BB58 is an alternative and recommended not buying it if you're only buying it because you like the Sub.
It also depends.. I‘m a flight attendant and I‘m often flying to Zurich. I see quite often a BB58 on the wrist of the passengers but mostly the navy blue one. And it‘s not directly the Zurich destination but towards Spain and especially in Germany I see them often.
@@SirMopy Interesting. I have a GA (Ticket for the whole country) and don't see her. Other great watches though. Many man wearing the watch they bought 40-50 years ago. This is Switzerland. :D
I just bought my second Rolex and had never looked into Tudor before. After my last purchase I was looking for a more subtle full steel watch and this watch has won my gear over.
I still can't believe we're in that day and age where people are simply too influenced by social media and internet hype for whatever watch they get or are looking to get. If you simply have done your own research, gone to the store and talked to an AD or anyone who might have that watch you like, and tried it on and it suits you then there you go. People are just too lazy nowadays and want other people to tell them what to do, subconsciously of course.
Other than the design of the hour hand, I love everything about this watch. That hour hand is the only reason I spent more than double to get a sub. Well that was before everything got crazy, so a decision well taken as well.
Owning both the 58 and a Sub 114270 i categorically say they are and wear like completely different watches. in addition i will never sell either of them, both incredible and one will not cancel out the desire for the other. Great vid by the way.
I was going back and forth , should i buy this , an Omega , Rolex for my first luxury watch and landed on the Zenith defy skeleton ceramic .Everyone is sleeping on Zenith, plus I like having a watch almost noone has or knows what it is. I came to the conclusion i dont want a boring piece that everyone and their mother owns. Also it feels safer to walk around with such a watch compared to a damn submariner or a datejust.
Great video. Your second point is key. I've spoken to people who really wanted a Rolex Sub but couldn't afford it yet, so bought the BB58 and now still longs for the Sub. I bought the Navy BB58 and I LOVE IT!
Bought mine from a private seller .Could not detect it had been worn . And I paid £500 less than any on ebay . He sold it to me as he knew he was never going to get the prices people are hoping to get . Its a great watch , but many people only bought them for a "flexing purpose" and flexers always move onto what ever "next " £1725.00 boxed . paperwork , receipt and a large chunk of the warrantee left .
Reason 3: People buy a BB58 to build their relationship with their local Rolex AD Knowing they won’t take a big hit when selling….once they get that Rolex, they dump the BB58. Reason 4: Speculators……there’s so much hype around the watch, people bought thinking they could make money….”it’s not a rolex” comes to mind when reality hits
I've seen exactly one 58 in the wild here in the US, but I practically can't leave the house without seeing at least one Sub. It must be a thousand to one ratio.
It was never been my cup of tea, I rather spend that money on Omega (my favourite brand). Hawawshi 😉 Keep up the great work bro, greetings from California.
Yeah, no one is dumping their BB58s. They are popular because they maintain value and often you can get slightly above market value. I have a BB58 and the BB ceramic. Both are solid every day beater watches.
I bought the BB58 blue a few months after it came out and ended up selling it about 2-3 months later. It was basically perfect but after wearing it awhile I just realized I preferred something with a bit more heft and a more toolish nature and went with a Seamster Nekton. The BB58 was more comfortable, more timeless in its design, more versatile, perfect proportions etc. and the Seamaster feels more like a chunk of steel diving equipment strapped to my wrist but that feeling won out as it just resonated with me more.
The last point is spot on. The watch was very nice 2 years ago and remains very nice now. The watch hasn’t changed. There’s no problem with the watch. The problem, as always, is people: grey market dealers, watch flippers, and people who get swept up in the hype and nonsense.
As your Middle Eastern friend, AB you were spot on about this watch. Today I was offered this watch preowned in perfect condition nearly 1k below its retail price.
Absolutely nailed it at 2.25. Today i bought a bluesy .. Sub is a sub, no alternative for it. Be patient contact your AD ,have a routine follow up . Never pick it from Grey Market. And enjoy your watch on your wrist. Be patient and It will come to you... believe me.
I sold mine and put the money towards a Sub and it’s been 8 months and I’ve barely taken it off. If Tudor wasn’t connected to Rolex it wouldn’t be dumped. It’s a gateway to Rolex plain and simple
I didn't get one cos it didn't speak to me. That criteria leaves me happy with the variety I do have from Timex to Longines while retaining a healthy bank balance
I think I'm all tudor'd out. I just sold mine & as it transpired I lost very little off my buy in price 18 months ago. Ive dreamed of a smaller pelagos for years. The 39mm finally appears & I just don't want it.strange. Maybe it's because I no longer want a sub? Oris diver 65 is my new purchase & many would view it as a downgrade but it just has so much more character to me.
Many collect for the wrong reasons. On average most collectors have similar brands and models in the collection. Says nothing about their taste, personality and collecting philosophy. More like bragging rights that they belong, have arrived or for validation.
I love mine and was the watch I wore the day my daughter was born. Not selling it but rather will pass it on to her. Love my bb58 reminds me of the old school Sean Connery Sub.
Spot on, people who want the Sub but settle for the BB58 will eventually sell them....sometimes they find out later they like the 58 more, then its time to flip again.
I don't have the data prove it, but I think there's a third reason - Tudor simply saturated the market with BB58s. There are a ton of them in various metals and color ways. Some have said that Tudor has basically turned into a one-trick pony, that pony being the BB.
Pretty much agree on all points. I'll add the heart what the heart wants, there are no true substitutes, so don't even try. Save up or put in the serious effort to get what you want so you buy once and be done with it... at least with that one particular thing, whatever that may be, not necessarily talking strictly bb58 or watches in general, applies to and could be anything you truly desire most in life.
I agree somewhat. Sometimes it’s a journey to find what you really like though. I think we’ve all bought a watch we really wanted only to find it didn’t work out, disappointingly. And I think I appreciate the variety of having several cheaper watches, instead of just one or two very expensive watches. And for some, it’s the journey, not necessarily the destination. I mean, one’s taste in watches can change also I think. Even if I got my grail watch, not sure I’d be happy wearing it all the time. Perhaps I would, not sure I want to put all my eggs in one basket finding out though.🤔😅
@@rosspfeffer5185 I don't believe in grail watches. That seems to imply that's the be all and end all of a watch collection.. I simply believe there are certainwatches you really really want. And, I'm certainly not discounting more affordable watches. And, I've definitely felt I had to get and experience certain watches and later found they weren't worth keeping. You never really know until you know for yourself. There's always an idea built up of what it may be like to have a certain watch and getting it. But, the reality, once obtained, may or may not live up to the hype in my head and heart. The journey and path is never 100% clear. But, I would still say it should be well thought out as possible to minimize the wasted money and time, especially if you're on a limited budget.
@@khronokraze Fair comment, I misunderstood your grail watch idea. You make some great comments. When there are competing priorities on the budget yes, research and contemplation bodes well. And yes, it’s a false economy not to get the model you want (within reason) and lose money along the way faffing around with ‘stepping stone’ models although one can afford to try cheaper ones to see what one likes when living with a watch, to a point. And even buying something with great specs on a great sale is a false economy if your heart isn’t in it. An expensive lesson I suppose. Appreciate this conversation!
True, that's why you should all be buying the 79730 , it's a sub/explorer and alot nicer than vintage Rolex versions. The 58 lacks that tool feel of the heritage.
The real problem with the black bay 58 was around the time covid hit and Rolex stopped selling the subs these watches were pushed heavily as a sub alternative, Rolex pushed all their customers to Tudor.
I had one and sold it. The watch was nice, the build quality seemed really good. The thing I really disliked was the bracelet. If it had micro adjustments that did not require a tool, I’d probably still have it.
Rolex has done an amazing job marketing their products unattainable and expensive that many settle for the lil bro. They sell the idea that it is almost as good. Tell you Marketing GENIUS.
Sold mine 9 months later, just couldn’t grow on me. The least worn watch in my collection. Tried it on bracelet, leather, canvass, rubber, nato - neither worked for my taste.
Not sure if people are exactly dumping it. Here in Finland, there’s not a single BB58 to be found on the used market. And the waiting list at the AD is still 10-12 months. There is however multiple Moonwatches, Subs, Seamasters etc. So could it be said that the people are dumping their Subs, Speedmasters and Seamasters? Also, I haven’t come across anyone wearing the BB58. The point that you shouldn’t “settle” for it, if you would also like to have a sub isn’t that simple either. I’ve always liked the sub and would really like to own one, but the fact that I don’t have unlimited amounts of funds (and the fact that the watches aren’t the only thing I like to spend money on), made me decide that for the money, I’d much rather have a BB58 and, for example, a Moonwatch, rather than only the sub. I’d say it’s not so much about settling, than about a conscious decision.
@@imcarlover3911 Being new to this whole watch ”scene”, I find watch people funny. So called influencers on instagram and UA-cam watch community are saying they love the BB58 and even prefer it to their subs, but they are criticizing it for being “too obvious of a choice” and selling it and keeping the sub. I can’t find a more obvious and usual choice than a sub. I guess they feel that the BB58 is too cheap and attainable for a respected influencer in watch community. To be respected, you have to own a sub, a vintage sub will get you even more respect points. TGV even called the BB58 a watch designed for hipsters. Looking at the IG watch community, seems like at the moment the most hipster thing to do is to buy a vintage Tudor/sub. /rant
@@atrain4980 mind game , Rolex and Tudor retail shop are still out of stock for BB58. Just wait till the waiting list is over a year then they gonna get face slapped
I have still yet to see another 58 in the wild where I live! I couldn’t take it off for three months straight and then I admit I lusted after the sub! Once purchasing the sub I realised just how amazing the 58 really is! My advice - get the sub and then the 58! It’s like having a Ferrari in the garage but always choosing to drive the Porsche!
I dont disagree with your two reasons this watch is being flipped but I'd offer a third, and the clue is in a phrase you used repeatedly - 'the perfect dive watch' or worse 'the tudor bb 58 is near the perfect divewatch'. I hear people say this all the time and I suspect others do to, and act on it, who wouldn't want "the perfect dive watch?" But watches don't exist and cant be assessed apart from the wearer - a watch cant be perfect unless it perfect FOR YOU. I believe a lot of people simply get the watch, put it on and are disappointed - after all 'perfect' is a pretty high bar.
It’s a great watch but a little too small for most men for a sports watch. If you have a wrist of 7 or up you will feel it just doesn’t fit over time. I wish Tudor would slim the 41s, hopefully the new Pelagos…
Agreed, it’s too small for a sports/tool watch for a lot of people. I love the Heritage Black Bay, even the thickness. It’s very substantial and the dial design with the mix of silver and gold is better balanced than the 58. Thinness only matters for a dress watch.
I live in London and I have literally never seen a BB58 in the wild. And Tudor in general very very rarely. I see Rolex everywhere, non stop, all models, specially SS, fakes, genuine, superclones, you name it. I love my Tudor specifically because it's different and it has its own personality. At this point I have stopped wearing my (modern) Rolexes because I just cringe when I see someone wearing one... you do not want to have a conversation about "how crazy the market has gone" with THAT guy.
I honestly think the sub is the ubiquitous d-bag watch. I would rather fly under the radar with the BB58 or SeaQ than sport the sub. Maybe it's a regional thing, but subs are very common here. Can have a more interesting conversation with a watch enthusiast over anything other than a sub.
I just think it's a beautiful watch and better looking than a sub. I hate to see that comparison and the idea that it's a poor man's sub... I can't disagree with that sentiment any stronger. It's just... beautiful!
If you want the sub, buy the 58 from the AD you plan to buy your sub from as that will give you some purchase history and hopefully give you a small opportunity. Then wait 2-5 years for your sub while enjoying the 58. Sell the 58 when the sub finally arrives and enjoy the sub
@@volpiguitar in UK, at least before covid times 2-5 years was standard depending on your purchase history. I waited 3 years until I got my pepsi and know people who got subs with similar waiting times
I think a lot of dudes sell because they get used to garishly huge watches on their wrists. They get the 58 which fits appropriately and they think it's too small. I love mine and would never sell it.
I haven't seen anyone wearing the BB58 except on the web. Everyone is wearing a smartwatch except me it seems. Mechanical watches are more niche than we think.
I've never seen one in the wild either
You’re talking shit. I wear a BB 58 on a nato strap every day and it’s bloody beautiful and simply brilliant.
The BB58 was my most worn watch in 2020. In 2021 I bought a no date sub. And then sold the sub because I prefer the BB58. I didn't settle for the BB58 vs. the sub, I prefer it. To me the BB58 provides a much better look and fit.
Bravo sir 👊🏼
would you mind elaborating? i've been eyeing the no-date as a grail piece and currently own a BB58. Thanks!
I like them both ,but understand your view
exactly my thoughts, the Sub suddenly seems boring when compared to the BB58, a lot of people just can't get over the Rolex snobbery and dismiss everything from Tudor because apparently "you just buy Tudor because you couldn't get a Rolex"...and that's coming from someone that owns watches from both brands.
The bb58 is “The smart man’s Rolex.”
Agreed!
@@watchcollectingstrategy how much dose this watch go for I'm in the market for a new watch
Accessible compared to Rolex, and perhaps more available.
How much did you pay for it?
The Nomadic Marai Vintage is very well made also a fraction of the Black Bay. Both are nice pieces.
@@PocketUau The movement and company is owned by Tudor, It's a Tudor movement. Does not matter what garbage you say.
It's Kevin O'Leary's fault people are dumping Tudors. He single handed ruined Tudor by saying: "Why should I buy a Tudor? I should just get a Rolex".
Kevin O’Leary the new messiah that we all have to follow 😄 (not really seen/heard him- as getting fed up with these UA-cam “celebs” these days)
@@manuel_winde Kevin O' Leary is the bold guy from Shark Tank
@@octoman_games I’ve never seen it but I doubt he is that influential to impact Tudor sales, I don’t think people are dumping them anyway. They were hard to get and now they’re available easily enough, I think it’s natural more will end up for sale now
True but I’m not sure we should take fashion advice from a bald fat guy that puts a gaudy red band on everything.
Then those people dumping it for that reason are dumb enough to think they too have that Kevin O’Leary kind of money.
The 58 is simply the best watch you can buy for that price point. My 58 blue hasn’t left my wrist for 12 months. It is absolutely bang on.
In summary two points. 1) Market is oversaturated with them, so they lost their charm; 2) Some people get it as a substitute for sub, but it doesn't quite match up.
Thanks.
More BB58s out there than Subs?!?! Lrn something new everyday!
Have not seen one 58 in the wild. Conversely I see Rolex nearly every weekend when out and about.
Thank you, in my area they don’t exist. it seem it’s always a submariner or datejust that I see out an about.
It's funny how my stepson just bought one new at the AD and loves it. I would say they're pumping not dumping!
Nice review! As a BB58 owner I will never sell mine. Still in the collection. Has all the check marks checked for my needs.
Enjoy it in good health!
Great point Micheal! I feel the best way to figure out your taste is to keep trying
Its okay, more watches for us!
Absolutely!
No one is 'dumping' the BB58. Your title makes it seem like people are getting rid of them in droves.
Sad reality, but Rolex is sacrificing the Tudor brand watches by forcing people who want a steel Rolex to buy them
I just bought a grand seiko and black bay58 in order to be on the list..
@@mplsmnpi My point exactly. And I don't blame you.
100% agree. And if it‘s possible to be on the list, go for it!! Also what‘s nice is: you can still enjoy the two watches :). It‘s a win win
@@SirMopy True, and if you keep the 1 or 2 watches you had to buy then that's great. But my point was around the many who buy 1 or 2 watches and then sell them at a discount because they just wanted the Rolex. That affects the Brands of the watches you are selling.
I like my omega seamaster 300m in sedna gold👀
My heart loves this watch….its part of my collection and ill probably never get rid of it. I bought my BB58 for the right reason. It truly appeals to me, that’s the way I’ve bought all my watches. Too many people today think of watches as an investment and want to turn around and flip them. Probably why the gray market is so inflated.
FUCK FAKE FLAKE FLIPPERS. True watch enthusiasts stay keeping.
I’d also like to note, I’ve seen a lot online but never seen anyone wearing one IRL so definitely wouldn’t say they are a common sight like a mustang in the US
Your are 100% right. I have not seen someone wearing one ever. Point well taken.
absolutely. and ... the BB58 is a beautifully engineered and reliable tool watch with some real provenance and desirability.
Same - never seen another 58 on a wrist.

@@MarkDanger777 Oh, God, tell me about it !!! Recently infected with the 'watch disease'....and it's slowly but surely pulling me under.....
Disagree , buy the BB58 and let the Sub die.
I agree. That's why I just buy what I like, according to my budget! I just got this one in two tone. I love this Sh!t

Think they need a Rolex sub instead as though the Tudor is sub standard, the bb58 is pound for pound one of the best watches in the market today.. no question.

Here in Japan, 58 is by far the most popular watch of BlackBay series.
You are SPOT ON, my friend.
Just bought my Blue Bay 58 today, very classy watch not too big not too thick and not too flashy. 😇
Love the Black Bay. Wish I could afford one. Grand Seiko, Tudor, Hamilton, and Seiko are my favorite watch brands.
Where did you get a BB58 for 2k pounds?
@@Michael-te6tb they’re about for that sort of price, I’ve seen a few on Instagram from people I follow. Usually on a bracelet would be a bit more but they’re out there with good prices now the initial hype has died down

I still can't believe we're in that day and age where people are simply too influenced by social media and internet hype for whatever watch they get or are looking to get. If you simply have done your own research, gone to the store and talked to an AD or anyone who might have that watch you like, and tried it on and it suits you then there you go.
A sub 114270 is not a sub, it s an explorer 1 .
Oufff the Zenith is incredible!!!
Great additions Adam!
It's okay to have different name brand watches in your collection lol no one is dumping Tudors quite as much as you say
Black Bay 58 in black - 105 for sale on eBay. 891 Rolex Submariners. What on earth are you talking about?
That’s probably a US-centric view. Here in Malaysia I see far more Subs on wrists than the 58s.
I've seen exactly one 58 in the wild here in the US, but I practically can't leave the house without seeing at least one Sub. It must be a thousand to one ratio.
I’ll save you the time… people aren’t dumping the black bay 58’s 😂 they hold the value and nobody is selling them for other watches
It was never been my cup of tea, I rather spend that money on Omega (my favourite brand).
Hawawshi 😉 Keep up the great work bro, greetings from California.
Thanks for watch brother!
Honestly Omega is the way to go.
I love both my Mustangs and I love both of my BB58's. While you do see them everywhere, you see them everywhere for a reason.
I honestly do NOT see this watch everywhere. In fact, I see the Submariner and the Seamaster 300 Professional more often. Lovely watch indeed.
I got conned by Social media in to buying the BB58.
Be patient and
It will come to you...
I have the Black Sub Date (2020 model) but still want the BB58🙈
Nicely said!
Went to my AD to buy a 58, walked out with the BB 41 Heritage in black. The 58 was just too small.
Your analogies are amazing man. Loved the video!
True, that's why you should all be buying the 79730 , it's a sub/explorer and alot nicer than vintage Rolex versions. The 58 lacks that tool feel of the heritage.
I would say you missed a major reason. Selling to upgrade. The black bay 58 is a entry watch for most getting into watches
“Don’t ask me for dating advice...”
Priceless quote. Lol!
You hit the nail on the head with the 3 social media "enthusiast" watches.
This is perfect watch for anyone who want a “humble” look, a shield instead of a crown
Sold mine 9 months later, just couldn’t grow on me. The least worn watch in my collection. Tried it on bracelet, leather, canvass, rubber, nato - neither worked for my taste.
Sometimes watches just don't click
I usually don’t buy watches waiting for them to “click”, but to each his own…
@@giusepperocchi2979 I’m the same, it was a spur of the moment thing, hopefully one of few
Ya, misleading video title. Even Chrono24 has not much bb58 left but thousands of subs.
100% it stands on its own, and you almost appreciate it more if you start with a Sub
Great point!
I agree! Many don’t realise that there is no such thing as perfect!!
It’s a great watch but a little too small for most men for a sports watch. If you have a wrist of 7 or up you will feel it just doesn’t fit over time. I wish Tudor would slim the 41s, hopefully the new Pelagos…
The Pelagos is a great choice
I have a 7z5 inch wrist and it looks awesome and wears So well as an all
Day watch.. bigger watches just don’t have the comfort as a daily wear IMHO
Agreed, it’s too small for a sports/tool watch for a lot of people. I love the Heritage Black Bay, even the thickness. It’s very substantial and the dial design with the mix of silver and gold is better balanced than the 58. Thinness only matters for a dress watch.
Very good advise on the sub black bay purchase
Don’t buy it because of the hype.
Get what you really want. Not the hype
I absolutely agree! I haven’t worn my sub in years for this exact reason. Instead, I will always reach for my BB58 blue.
I own one and would never sell it, I just love it. I don’t buy into the hype and bubble of watches !! It’s not meant to be unique and exclusive.
I just think it's a beautiful watch and better looking than a sub. I hate to see that comparison and the idea that it's a poor man's sub... I can't disagree with that sentiment any stronger. It's just... beautiful!
“If your heart desire the Sub, do not buy the bb58”- bro it’s not that people don’t buy or desire the sub, it’s because they can’t!!!!!
two year wait sounds about right.
Don't forget that 3-4x price tag compared to the bb58
If you want the sub, buy the 58 from the AD you plan to buy your sub from as that will give you some purchase history and hopefully give you a small opportunity. Then wait 2-5 years for your sub while enjoying the 58. Sell the 58 when the sub finally arrives and enjoy the sub
Where the heck do you need to wait 2-5 years for a Sub?? Greetz from Switzerland.
@@volpiguitar in UK, at least before covid times 2-5 years was standard depending on your purchase history. I waited 3 years until I got my pepsi and know people who got subs with similar waiting times
I have been waiting for over 2 years for a Sub….
I think a lot of dudes sell because they get used to garishly huge watches on their wrists. They get the 58 which fits appropriately and they think it's too small. I love mine and would never sell it.
