Why We Are Not Keeping The TUDOR PELAGOS 39 | TUDOR PELAGOS 39 REVIEW

- I know, I know. This watch has been out for a couple of weeks. But I wanted the dust to settle to REALLY make up my mind in regards to how I feel about it ( i am totally one to get taken away by the hype train sometimes :-D).
So hear it is; my sort of objective review about a watch that has been taking over the watch world lately!
Let me know in the comments down below what you think and how you would rank this would in context to the past couple of Tudor releases - would love to know what you think!
I am still unsure whether or not the constant 'fan service' is good or bad for a watch maker like Tudor. I really love their direct in terms of smaller case sizes but i really hope that its not always done by sacrificing detail. Anyways - we'll see ;-D
Thank you for watching!

The gripes about the marketing make me laugh. These are luxury watches. Nobody’s repairing North Sea Oil Rigs with no-date Submariners any more. Good for Tudor for embracing reality and realizing that their core audience is really people aspiring to a certain kind of lifestyle.
You want a tool watch, buy a G-Shock. This is jewelry, and we all know it.
So true. Reality check!
I'd argue that's precisely the reason why you should go for the version you like more from an aesthetic point of view.
🤣🤣
Hell yeah, well said
Boo!
I love the understated look of this Pelagos model. It ticks so many boxes: lightweight yet durable, excellent bezel action, flat dial and hour markers, the colour and design.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m a Pelagos 42 (blue) daily driver. Have a black diver on my buy list in the next 3 months. The 39er is currently one of three top candidates for me. The light weight makes it an absolute plus as the 42 is already such a joy to wear due to its presence to weight ratio.
Great video and overall very helpful comments. However, I have to point out that the only reason you have a clasp issue is because you and your husband open the clasp backwards haha. You pull from the end where the flip lock is located, since the hinge is on the other side. Pretty much this way on any bracelet, ever. Try it out and I'm sure the t-fit will no longer fail you.
They are both not the sharpest tool in the shed.
They could flip it or maybe they already have. I have found that a flipped bracelet on some watches fits me better. Not sure why.
@@Judah.Rosenthal maybe you are removing the links on one side more when you should be doing it to the other side
@@Gojo2OP Has more to do with the clasp. Maybe the wrist I wear watches on? Not sure but flipping one link, half link, etc doesn’t always do it. Flipping the whole bracelet doesn’t always either.
@@chrismountbatton5260 lol i agree
I really like the size, and I've always loved the look of the Pelagos. Wonderful watch and great review.
Love the minimalistic approach, and the square markers match the snowflake hour marker, the round ones just didn’t gel with the rest. Tudor making a watch which is not just a cheap copy, but making its mark, love it. I love the submariner as this is the gold standard, but can’t even get on a waiting list, so I will buy this watch and I like it a lot as an independent quality product.
Thank you Jenni - Great macro shots. I think this watch would make a great watch if it is your only watch - but I agree I don't see where it fits in my collection
Great review as always. Just a note on the clasp I open all my Tudors from the security latch side including the T-Fit ones as they have that little thumb catch to pull on. Opening the other way as you mentioned seems very awkward to myself.
Exactly!
Yeah glad someone else noticed that lol. This unwanted opening of the t-fit adjustment is only happening from opening the clasp backwards. It's on a hinge and definitely meant to be pulled from the "top". That's why clasps without the latch (like Omega twin triggers) have the buttons at the top.
Seems like an obvious way to open not sure why he is opening the wrong way. Tudor even has a raised area for your nail to easily fit and release the clasp. So weird.
The video colour grading is so nice! The warm tone, deep blacks and bokeh makes the video so engaging to me. The watch is nice too XD
Excellent review, Congrats for it. I am on waiting list to receive my Pelagos 42 LHD as I wear watches on my right wrist.
Great review. Thank you. The photography is some of the best I've seen.
Thanks for a great review Jenni. I wandered into my friendly AD some weeks ago just after this watch was released and had the chance to look at and try this model but not purchase it. I loved the look and the restrained hue of the titanium. Before seeing it in the flesh I wasn't that bothered as I have the LHD Pelagos. Anyway the 39 is in my humble opinion it's own watch and not just a deflated 42, the sunray dial is very subtle in most cases looking a very deep black and the ceramic lumed markers sitting on the dial and not the sculpted rehaut of the 42 is another differentiator. A week or so after expressing an interest I had the call and it's been on the wrist for a week and have no issues with the clasp. I'll be keeping my LHD 42 for definite as I said these are two quite different watches. It's also a lot different to the 58, that flat sapphire crystal, no high polishing it's like the BB58 takes the inspiration from the past and does it very well, the Pelagos 39 looks to the present.
Thanks for these comments, review was great, but misses the nuance that time on wrist gives. I'll get one I think once back in Europe from Central Asia.
@@alastairmurray770 Good luck! Having a hard time in Asia.
I have one and have been wearing it nonstop for two weeks. Fantastic. It is the Tudor they have been working towards making. I also have the issue of pulling out the quick adjust fairly often.
I have a theory. If you look at the original marine nationale Tudor submariners, all of their bezels have faded to a bluish gray. So while it may not be as obvious with the black variant, I think the sunburst bezel is going to give that faded effect with the blue (when they release it)
HI Jenni, as always, another great video. I picked up the Pelagos 42 3 weeks ago. I have been a little disappointed in the watch. My biggest grip is with the sharp edges around the crown guard. When winding the watch, the edges underneth are sharp and seem unfinished and the bezel is very stiff. It has smoothed out a little with several rotations. I got a decent price at $4200 USD but this price point is not a cheap beater. This is my first Tudor and I am a little underwhelmed. I will continue to wear it and give it a fair judgement. Keep up the good work.
The bezel will become less stiff. Turn it around 10 times and you will see that it will be smooth. Maybe you have to turn and press a little the first round when you start form the firm/fixed position at 12. Crown action is a bit stiff also but this will also be better in a few weeks. Tolerances are tight with this great tool watch. I have the blue by the way. Love it!
The 21mm lugs whhhhyyyyyyy?! 😢
Yeah, one of my only issues with the P39
Tbf I usually just jam a 22mm strap in there
Why not
The bracelets really comfortable. Not sure why anyone would want it on the rubber. Ti is good with temperature and hypoallergenic, so the odd lug size doesn't bother me.
Great review, and amazing b roll footage!
Lovely video - and great review, as always.
Solid review, and amazing macro photography (but I don’t think the marketing strategy should influence how you evaluate the watch itself).
Right. Most people who buy luxury watches (divers or what have you) aren't professional divers anyway, and most professional divers dont wear luxury watches (at least not while diving), so big who cares. I'd say that they for once marketed it somewhat honestly.
Great review as always! 👍 Just noticed the tip of the seconds hand looks like it has too much paint on it. QC issue I guess?
IMO that is unacceptable at this price point.
I like the clean looks, and of course the light weight. The price is high for what amounts to a 3-hand watch, but if they come out with colored versions (blue, green) I will probably bite the bullet. (I have too many black dials as it is.)
Thank you so much mamacoo for taking us shopping🛍…my wish list just got longer
Thanks for the info regarding the clasp adjustment. Personally, I am not keen on titanium. I'm actually looking forward to when hopefully the BB58 gets a new clasp and maybe they'll do away with those faux rivets.
Thanks for explaining strap change is the old fashion way with tools! First review that has advised this.
Nice to see this in 39mm, I like how Tudor made this made this more like a true tool watch than the 42mm, My daily wear watch for the past 7 years is a grade 2 titanium and although they do scratch a bit easier the brushed finish in the dark grey means the scratches a far less visible than if the watch were in stainless or grade 5 titanium. I'd really like to see someone do a comparison between this watch and the Black Bay 58 in Ceramic
Hi Jenni, fan of your videos and work. Thank you for great content.
However, I couldn't see any review or thoughts about Longines.
I'm curious about your opinion.
Fantastic review, but why no mention of the paint splatter near the tip of the second hand? (Great macro photography BTW!) If/when I get one, I’m bringing a loupe to double check the quality. That paint splatter would drive me nuts.
Noticed this straight away…just looks a bit shoddy when you bear in mind the technicians that assemble these wear a loupe of some description
Enjoyed your video. Very informative. Was very surprised to see you with tattoos.
Correction pelagos 42 is made from grade 2 titanium. I have one and I love it but 39 looks amazing
Not true...my Tudor Pelagos 42 is Grade 5 Ti.

thanks for sharing. great shots ... ready for it one day, lukewarm for it the next... no idea atm ... availability... not in belgium, or they are messing with me. ps. that spec on the seconds hand would bother me silly tho :s
Great review Jenni! Am I the only one who noticed poor QC on that dial? There is a piece of lint painted on the second hand! Very visible in some real scale shots and undeniable under the macro.
I saw this. Looks terrible IMO
Thanks for the review, Jenni
imperfection paint job on the second hand? for a watch that coast that much?
Yeah I spotted this to, unforgivable
Yup. Should never have left the factory with that but they would fix it pretty quickly if you raised it.
Doesn’t inspire confidence
@SuperPugCat, it's supposed to be painted like that when you look down on the dial from above the colours merge perfectly with the hour and minute hands and dial....I've had the original pelagos for a few years and would recommend it to anyone.
the camera work on this video is amazing!
nice one and thx for the video. Almost on the same page. BB Pro will still have my attention until Tudor offers a steel diver watch with all the new features (bracelet without rivets, T-fit, fully brushed case and smaller size) shown on Pelagos.
For the time being BB Pro is an excellent choice and all that stuff on the case height/thickness is not that critical while wearing it (if you can have one from ADs).
Did anyone else notice the defect or the piece of hair/lint that's stuck on the second hand tip (1:51~1:52)
I love this 39mm version, so glad they’ve made it, great video, thanks.
Advertising makes no difference to me. I either like the watch or I don’t. In this case I do, very much. There is a wait in the U.K. but agree should not spend overs for any Tudor.
Very nice looking watch, looks better without the date, just like the Submariner.
I get how some love the symmetry of a dateless watch, but I always end up missing the convenience of having a date complication. I’m a function over form guy.
I agree 👍 date window fan's have their pick of the litter. We don't have nearly as many no date options as watches with date's
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 meh. I sort of agree with you, but sort of don’t. Tudor divers (i.e. the majority of the Black Bay line are all dateless). If this is the alternative to the BB58c I would have preferred this to have a date. Those who like the dateless look have the BB58 in black or blue to scratch that itch.
@@jasonswitzer1748 When I think of no date complication watches sport watches that is only a few come to mind, Submariner, Explorer 1 which I own, Longines Ultra chron, Omega Speedmaster,Black bay,Oyster perpetuals and probably a few more I'm probably not thinking of but if I would to mention all the sport watches with date's. I probably don't have a enough room in the comment section 🙃 watches with date's clearly win. I am not anti date or anti no date but I like to have some no date complication options. The Longines Ultra chron is at the top of my list and the Doxa 300
After putting the Pélagos 39 on my wrist yesterday at the AD, after being on the wait list since the day the watch was announced - I handed it back. This surprised me. On paper (and in the pictures) it was exactly the watch I was looking for. But it’s just as Jenni says, the watch is “just there” - there’s nothing special about it. I can’t explain exactly why but on wrist it left me tepid.
I was exactly the same. I got first refusal and actually did refuse it. Too plain, no buzz and felt cheap.
Good idea with the side icons 💡👍😁
The new dial looks more refined to me. I wonder a) whether there would be a blue version of it and b) does this watch means slimmer Tudors in the future?
I got my Pelagos 39 a few weeks ago it's a fantastic watch to say I am happy is an understatement.I tried on the Pelagos 42 it felt too big on the wrist.I like the BB 58 but I can't get over those rivets plus they seem to have done too many versions to the point of diluting the watch in my opinion.
I think if you have sub no date, a BB58, or a pelagos 42, this watch is to similar and probably not different enough to purchase.

Hello Jenni ... Great channel ... 👏 what is the watch case u are using in Yr collection ?
I’ve tried this on, I think it might have been just your example that the quick adjust would open when opening the clasp, didn’t have that issue at all.
I can definitely see the easy adjust becoming a problem a few years down the road
I was finally able to put the watch on my wrist this week and I am delighted to say it is near perfect. It does not compare to a Sub but it doesn’t need to. I have to say it is stunning and at this price point it is unbeatable. Wow!
Did anyone else notice the blob of Lume paint on the second hand, where’s the quality control for these guys. Still is a beautiful watch. Thanks, Jenni😁
Thanks for the review. I would have liked it to have a date complication as its 42mm counterpart. It would have been perfect. I support I will still wait.
Love your videos Jenni, as an IBWC member myself I find your videos very relatable. I wonder though, is The IBWC a thing of your making or is it an actual committee...?
great review I've the lhd version and I think it's a stunning watch 500 meters . roulette date wheel..helium valve . what the pelagos range is about ..a true diver it's little brother is just a titanium bb 58 imo
I’ve been torn over the original and the 39. Having now tried on a 39, and loved how wearable and low profile it is compared to my black bay, and how it does at a glance have a sub look. But why pay £3500+ for that? I do keep coming back to the Pelagos 42 and think there’s a lot more going on for your money there. It looks like something special and different. And seeing as the 39 is now the hot new thing, maybe market values of old 42s will come down a little so I can get one. The only remaining problem is blue or black!
We’re in the same boat, I was just thinking this exact same thing watching the video.
Get the blue
I think you're right , by having a broader appeal it's lost a lot of its identity and querks that make a Pelagos a Pelagos! It will hold great appeal to those that would love a sub , but either can't afford or get one. You're spot on! It's nice but somehow boring.
The 42mm Pelagos is also grade 2 titanium if I remember correctly. Btw do the endlinks at the lugs rattles? I had the LHD and at first I thought it was the clasp rattling but after changing it to rubber strap, I realised it was the endlink and sold it cos that rattling bothers the hell out of me.
I couldn't take my eye off the second hand and the imperfection with the paint near the end.
What's wrong with the hand?
@@DarthJabba504 check out 2:07 towards the end of second hand has some extra paint layered up. Probably specific to this exact watch and not all them.
Agree with you. That’s a big chunk of lume on that 2nd hand. I’d be handing it back to AD if I’d been given that watch. Very strange it got through quality control at Tudor.
Agree would do my head in over time 😅
I have the same issue with the hands, took it back to AD, sent for Tudor to repair (after 1 day of use). It is a shame, I have waited 1 year to purchase.
Thanks for the video! Don't really understand your criticism on the marketing around the Tudor 39; who really cares? Are you planning to go to the North Pole with the new Ranger? No. Are modern dive watches lifestyle choices and not actual dive watches? Yes.
I can't imagine anyone buying this watch feeling obliged to jump into the water in their evening dress 😀.
Agree. When she lead with that, you know it’s a great watch. Tudor thinks they can sell it to both sexes - good for them. At least they admit women exist - she appeared to be wearing her Rolex, who barely acknowledges females.
Big Tudor fan; would love to see Tudor take advantage of Rolex’s discontinuation of the Submariner Hulk and add a green dial/green bezel Pelagos. Seems to me a relatively cheap proposition for Tudor since we’re only talking dial and bezel; no retooling of the manufacturing process. I’d be first in line, especially for a 39
I’m not a green fan. But that would be very popular- they should do it. Hope the next version isn’t the standard blue; Tudor needs to mix it up. White?
The obvious hair under the paint on the second hand should have been caught by quality control, don’t you think?
I just had a road trip from France to Italy. Almost all ADs have one on display but none available to buy. My local dealer in California said the waitlist is 40 ppl long :/
Both 42mm and 39mm Pelagos are Grade 2.
Also, the clasp isn’t designed to be opened that way. Open it the way you open a Submariner’s clasp and you won’t have the issue you are having with the “glidelock” unlatching.
Even a Submariner’s clasp would unlatch the glidelock if you open it that way.
The second hand has a defect in the paint 3 mm below the end side 😮
Still prefer the warmth of the gilt, aluminium bezel and red triangle of the 58 OG.Being content with it has saved me a lot of money.Tried it on Tudor silk strap but missed the heft of the bracelet. Thanks for your review.
It's beautiful and amazing for those who seek titanium.
People who like the look and feel of stainless won't hop ship to wear this though, it would need to be on another level of finish like the titanium Grand Seiko cases that don't even look like titanium with that polishing.
Gilt instead of gold gives a cheap feeling for a "luxury" watch.
@@ppbur As I wear all the time tend to think of it as more tool than luxury especially as it is, relatively,"cheap".
@@richardsims3847 Ive went off the gilt. Used to love the bb58 black but now prefer the blue colour way. I actually really really like this new palagos and it's probably the closest you'll ever get to a new Tudor sub. It's a lot more crisp and cleanly executed than the black bb58 and I prefer it. But i wouldn't be unhappy with any Tudor in any colour way, they're all good options. I might be more tempted with the new palagos if they release a blue one. I've had my eye on a blue bb58 but think things could change if they do a blue palagos 39. I really like the black but already have a planet ocean in black so black dialled diver is out of the question.
@@frankdux5693 Yes some variety is needed and choice of colour is affected by skin tone.
What are you thoughts re the dial / glass size, it looks small when next to a BB58? I think BB58 and Ranger wear better. I have an OG black Pelagos and no date Sub. A watch that peaked my interest, but I’m hesitant too.
great review, Jenni! If I didn’t have a Black Bay 58 already, this would be on top of my list. I really like the 39mm size and the square markers. Unfortunately it doesn’t feature a Date-Function, which would be super practical.
8:46 I feel you are mistaken. You said the Pelagos 42 has little holes for micro adjustment. The Pelagos 42 does not have holes on the side for micro adjustment. It has a slot on the bottom of the clasp to show the position of each of its adjustment points, as well as the “spring” section at the end. It was actually Tudor’s first attempt at quick adjustment system. Maybe you are thinking of the older clasps on Tudor’s Black Bay bracelets, which have the micro adjustment holes.
Jenni, love the videos! Question- You mentioned that this Pelagos 39 is Grade 2 titanium and that the Pelagos 42 is grade 5? I have looked and looked and can find nothing that states the Pelagos 42 is grade 5 Titanium. Can we confirm this anywhere?? I do so hope it is grade 5!
I have the 42, 99% sure it's grade 2 from the colour, grade 5 has a lot of alloy in it, much harder to machine.
Tudor themselves confirmed that the case and bracelet of the 42 is Grade 2 titanium, but that the trick clasp is Grade 5 titanium. There's a whole WUS thread on it if you go a bit deeper down the rabbit hole.
Hi, the clasp on the Pelagos 42 is stainless steel… titanium reacts with titanium and can jamb. It’s a common problem with titanium bike parts…
@@tomsjoberg4909 Clasp on the original is stainless steel which contributes to the addition weight.
@@LuisM02 Seems you're right. The information I have seems to be about the buckle on the rubber strap. It was a screenshot from an Instagram-comment from the official Tudor account.
Tudor gives us a fantastic watch, people find a way to complain about it. Who cares how they market it. They had the first Black Bay on Lady Gaga’s wrist. It’s a winner for me.
I love the size of the Pelagos 39 but I'm really bummed that the date function didn't come with, so if/when I decide to try a Pelagos, it'll be the 41mm despite the fact that I don't love the size. Great video. Thanks as always!
You are very right about light weight watches. This is why I really don't like things like the Sub/ Seamaster, and totally love small 36mm watches, or watches on leather straps. It's very comfy to wear a watch less than 100g or so

Any comment on the clasp length, and how it looks on smaller wrists? It seems much longer than Tudor's other models.

great video jenni! but i think the regular pelagos/lhd uses grade 2 titanium as well. can anyone confirm?
Spot on correct sir! 5 line OG peli owner and p39 owner here, both grade 2.
Good looking watch. I have the GMT and I don’t feel it makes me want another Tudor, time to move on. There are so many great watches out there. Thanks Jenni
I love the GMT, it was my go to watch but I just wish they’d slim it down to the 39mm case size. Got rid of it in favour of a Sea Dweller 4000, the ultimate Rolex sports watch IMHO- no date bubble, classic 40mm case size but with the added bonus of the modern solid link bracelet and machined clasp!
Same here. I already own the Tudor BB GMT and do not feel the need for another Tudor. On the Rolex waiting list now…lol
A good revue and I agree with your dislikes. I have actually tried it on because the specification was just what I wanted. When I picked it up it was a big disappointment. It is very light and to me it felt cheap. The bracelet seemed to have sharp edges and I wasn’t a fan of the sun burst dial. The watch did nothing for me. I tried on the 58 while I was in the shop and it just felt like quality. That would be the one for me.
Never buy a Tudor above retail. The BB pro is already being sold on eBay at or below retail. Obviously the flippers got that one wrong given the changing economic circumstances. My heart bleeds for them. 😂😂. The 39 Pelagos will be available soon everywhere. If you're on the look out for a Rolex I've got a feeling things will be looking good soon.
I believe it's a fine watch: P.S. I'd love for you to produce a vid where you just say "Audemars Piquet" and "Vacheron Constantine" on a loop. I'm like Gomez Addams; you melt my heart when you speak French!
Really cool tattoo(s), is there a specific name for this style?
I wish it came in blue but I suspect that Tudor wanted to differentiate this from the 42mm.
But on the plus side, it makes me love my blue BB58 even more.
I'm sure we'll see a blue 39 in due course, just a matter of time.
I thought the same. If this comes out in blue, I'm sold.
Great camera work. I can’t wait to pick it up and start a rotation with my BB Pro. AD said a few weeks. Always wanted a Ti watch in my collection. And while it’s not a Sub, it’s available at MSRP unlike any R sport watches.
Really glad Tudor is adding options for us small wristed but wish the just kept it the same as the 42, really lost a lot of the unique/cool factor with the changes, especially the rehault and bezel finish.
Well done Jenni i love Tudor. I like the black but if i Can pull the trigger i will prefer the blue. For me Tudor are a good alternative to Rolex or another watch brand. That depends of your watch taste well job

Where did you get the information that Pelagos 42 is made from grade 5 titanium???
I absolutely love that people don't really seem to like this watch. For me, this is like traveling back in time and finding a Submariner for an affordable price. It is literally almost perfect for me. I can't believe how amazing this watch is. Love that the price has remained low and I only wish it had a date, that's it. Other than that it's perfect...except for the hair that made it through quality control on the seconds hand of the watch in this video, hahaha.
I think needs a date
Is that Gandalf hair on the tip of the second hand?
Is there a hair sprayed in the paint on the minute hand? See 7:04
I bought Pelagos 42mm recently, great watch, looks awesome, on my wrist 6.7 inch 39mm looked too small (in my opinion) so I went with 42mm. Happy with the purchase, recommend.
yep! I got a tudor black bay pro two months ago in italy while here in switzerland they put you on “the list”
What’s the blemish on the second hand? It looks like a hair got on the hand whilst adding lume. I can’t under this now.
Saw that too and there were a couple other imperfections. The finish was just not the best.
What are your views on Konstantin Chaykin's watches and specifically his Jocker style watch ????
Hi Jenni. Which Tudor watch would you recommend for a lady with a small (145mm) wrist that she can enjoy now and hand down to her son in future?
what is going on with the finishing of the seconds hand and the specs on the markers? surprised you didn't mention it. we are talking tudor right? looks really sloppy.
I'm waiting for the blue 😍
Same here! 😃👌🏾
Yup, when the blue comes out, it’ll be be on my radar for sure
Hi, where did you get the two watch photos on the wall behind you?
A quick clarification: seemed like you said that the Pelagos titanium was softer. From redditt forums my understanding is that the titanium is very tougher, tougher than the oyster steel. That said, it scuffs easily (tiny scratches) but over time the oxidation "erases" these... one can also wipe the scratches away literally with an eraser. So very superficial. The clasp is where scratches happen, because the clasp is made from steel.
Great review. The Tudor Pelagos is a nice watch, but as all Tudor watches it's a little bit rough.
In my opinion it's difficult to compare Tudor to Rolex.
Tudor just a cheaper clone of Rolex , especially this watch compared to the Submariner !
