The reality is that art has no inherent value, meaning people can potentially value it at anything. And that anything usually happens to be $0 for the average Joe. When people commission a popular artist, they are buying a name, a brand, convenience and scarcity. They aren’t paying for your art. Charity is hard to come by when most mid-lower class people are struggling to pay their bills. Basically, NSFW makes so much because they’re playing the whale game. More people jerk off then build creative projects. The chances of hitting an art whale who is doing it for a creative process is very low, and if you do it’s almost always a business with a salaried position available for you. Draw p8rn and you’re casting a much, much wider net. Vastly wider. Then you hope and pray for a whale.

everyone in my school is like that they asked for me to do an art for them and I say it causes money and they get mad and say well you're not that good PERSON IF I'M NOT THAT GOOD THEN WHY DID YOU ASK?!?!?
Rule of thumb for freelance artist: -Always charge something up front. Either the full payment or half. That way even if a customer bails on a commission you still get something for your time. If someone refuses to pay anything upfront that’s a redflag that they either aren’t serious about commissioning you or they might be a bailer. Protect yourself by never giving the finished piece without payment. It’ll save you a lot of headache in the future.💕
Well... you also need to be respected and trustworthy before you demand payment up front. I'm not going to just give you my money and hope you don't just ignore me and never draw anything at all.
sleshstamp well that’s why you don’t commission or even communicate with non-trustworthy artist. If there are red flags like they don’t have many examples, all their art is in different styles and they don’t have and wips to prove they drew the art then you don’t commission them. Paying upfront is to protect the artist from scammers and whatnot. I understand being cautious but if you aren’t willing to pay anything upfront you’re going to have a very hard time commissioning because the artist will likely write you off as a scammer and not work with you. professional artists charge upfront most of the time. It’s beginning artists that don’t do that usually

I remember when a guy commissioned me for something big. We talked about what he wants and decided on all the details. It'd take me around 8 hours to make and be the hardest artpiece I've done so far. I told him that and started discussing compensation.
He said he'd give me 1$ for it.
I politely declined.

Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us", they kept demanding

Same. I don't think I can afford to commission anyone currently, but by golly I want to! D: Having people draw whatever you want just sounds so appealing! And on top of that, you're supporting someone who needs it!
But again, priorities. Gotta think about my own finances first.

Rule of thumb for freelance artist:
-Always charge something up front.
Yeah I 100% agree with this even if you watermarked the work and they haven’t paid they’re still getting that image for free if they bail
Hey, thanks. Maybe I'll get lucky
Well... you also need to be respected and trustworthy before you demand payment up front.
@@ConnerPlays360 Just has a fat "Artist name" across it.
Seeing this first from a bootleg Baldi's Basics, this didn't age well inside my brain.
I opened comissions a week ago.
