Having difficulty breathing at all times, short legs, deformed face, higher likelihood of getting dangerous diseases, problems with vision all because people think it's cute sounds horrible.
Yeah and if you say we should stop breeding them in the wrong corners of the internet, you'll get swarmed by people pretending you said all the pugs should be seized and euthanized. I've been there. They turn off their brains and let their emotions do the thinking.
@@MakerInMotion the "best breeders" are where this went wrong, the gene pool is too reduced and genetic faults are now a core part of the breed. People need to stop breeding purebreds. We need laws against breeding an animal to suffer. That's just false, and way too broad? What about robbers who steal from people, is their intention good? A lot don't have to, too.
The existence of Pugs and dogs like them are essentially just a reflection of human narcissism. They don't need to, and should never have existed. The only reason they are a thing is humans selfishly toying with something for their own amusement, nothing more.
the way he talks about it makes not much sense though. Golden retrievers came around years and years after the pug. The pug has been around since 400 BCE, genuinely one of the oldest dog breeds. And back yard bred vs well bred make a difference. Well bred pugs do not suffer. I see people complaining about pugs all the time but never go after pekingese, shih tzus, Japanese chin, or any of the other dog breeds with the exact same thing. It just does not make sense.
i still can't wrap my head around the fact that siberian husky and a pug is in the same species while alligator and crocodile is not even in the same genus.
As a biology undergrad, it probably has to do with DNA through molecular analysis. (Like Dogs sharing DNA 90% with Wolves while crocodiles and alligators probably share like 60%) the example I used here isn't real btw, just making up percentages for scale. There are also parts of genes called introns and exons that control how DNA is expressed, such as size, fur color and other traits. Dogs and wolves may share like 90% DNA (not sure), but only the exons (genes that are expressed) are different. Fun fact: Did you know that the crocodile and birds like the swan are more closely related than crocodiles and komodo dragon?
@souhiyori8640 wow, thank you for the elaboration! i didn't know the existence of introns and exons before. another keywords for me to do a little more research then.
"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should..." These words from Jurassic Park ring true in the modern world even to this day... My heart goes out to these little guys, whose very existence is pain...
I've never understood why people find it so difficult to just breed them with a healthier breed of dog, even a single generation of crossbred pug is significantly healthier. Is a dog being "cute" really that much more important than a dog being able to exist in relative comfort. My country (The Netherlands) has made it illegal to breed brachycephalic dogs.
They don't need to outbreak pugs and brachial all have pretty wide gene pools, they can just stop selecting for poor traits which is how one makes a breed anyway, they created the old English Bulldog for example relatively quickly and its literally a more robust healthier version of the English bulldog, this isn't even a hard issues to fix, people just need to stop backyard breeding and talk to national breed clubs on preferred standards tbh
@jessicagislason4855 I wasn't aware, that honestly just makes it worse to me, sadly I highly doubt people will realize they need to stop doing this. Or at least they will not care, because they care too much about what their dogs look like.
Countries are actually starting to do that. I forget which, but one of the two breeds of English bull terrier (because there's the standard and the mini) is now illegal to purebreed in my country. You HAVE to cross breed it either with the other type of bull terrier or with something else. And it's because of health issues.
I support that, but this “breed” will certainly take longest time to be created since completely differently from the common method(looking just in the physical appearance) which take around a year to fully develop. In this case we are looking to the physiological appearance or simply health, which to analyze we need to take whole lifetime to take in consideration and try to pass who reach the oldest age, and since the “best” window to reproduce is young to middle aged(2-4 years old) it would be basically shot a target in total darkness. I am not an expert at this topic but I think the best solution is look at the never domesticated ones or the 100% Natural dog breed(aka grey Wolf) and try adopt physiological traits that they have to the ones we have.
Fact: smaller dogs actually have longer maximum lifespans on average than larger dogs. Do with this info what you will, I just felt like here would be a decent place to put this fact.
@dashelyc not sure how that's relevant, and there seems to be a lot of disagreement over which is the oldest identifiable breed. Humans have always thought they know best
I’ve been saying this for years, yet people think it’s just pug or frenchie hate. We do not hate the dogs, we hate the humans who created such a dog that lives in constant pain, all in the name of money and bad taste aesthetics.
But what if the owner says "My Soosie-Moosie-Poosichka is totally healthy and happy, unlike you"? Because I think after the person says this, chances you convince them otherwise are nearing zero
Exactly! Altough how cute they might look, they all suffer so much for their whole lifes. It is so sad. We should stop breeding them and let the last of pugs etc dog breeds that only suffer, to live their lifes through as the last of their kind.
Thank you for spreading awareness. Dogs deserve to be treated with kindness and respect (as do all sentient beings). They became our protectors, hunting partners, loyal companions, reasons to get out of bed, etc., and this is how we pay them back. They are not objects, pieces of property, livestock, status symbols, etc. to be exploited for profit, used and discarded like everything else we mindlessly produce and consume in our throw-away society. Cats don't have it as bad, because they were not selectively bred until relatively recently. Most of the domestic cats you see today are basically the feline equivalent of a mutt. Here's hoping the folks who _do_ breed cats will heed the example of what went wrong with dog breeding, and not stray too far from the natural template.

Finally, somebody who shares my thoughts about pugs and other chronic suffering dogs. Yes, they are funny and sad at the same time. I can't stand their breathing, it gives me anxiety out of empathy for their suffering.
The pug breeding has got to stop. Thankfully there are people who are trying to breed them to have less health issues. It’s so sad that we as a species care about aesthetics more than a comfortable for these animals. 😔
As a woman obsessed with dogs (especially behavioral science and their bonds with us), Brachycephalic dogs make me sooooo sad. I can't look at one without feeling a sadness, as much as I love a pug cuddle or a French Bulldog tantrum... I know there are breeders out there, at least, that are trying to give the healthy muzzle back to pugs....but, unfortunately, they are not as popular.
It should be illegal to deliberately breed animals with severe genetic disorders, which extremely short nose is. The same goes for satin guinea pigs or their mixes who carry genes causing osteodystrophia, which is a horrible disease which makes their bones "spongy" instead of solid, so they live in constant pain, can´t walk, can´t even lay down comfortably, can´t chew properly, so their teeth overgrow... They have to be put to sleep very young. I think 2 years of age is their max lifespan. Normal guinea pigs live for 5-8 years. There´s also a lot of awful conditions caused by genes for certain fur color or pattern in guinea pigs, rats and other rodents. The breeders keep saying they are responsible and don´t breed two individuals who carry the bad genes with each other, so it is not a problem. It IS a f-ing problem when they deliberately keep the genes in the population, then some kid buys a pair of animals who carry the recessive genes and their offspring is affected by the diseases. The breeders are the ones who deliberately keep these bad genes flow. Normies don´t even know these conditions exist because it is so absurd to expect the breeders to deliberatey spread awful disorders throught the population of animals they claim to love.
The sad thing is that, for the most part, selective breeding began with the aim of encouraging certain traits that helped dogs do specific jobs. Things like herding or guarding instinct, fondness for water, desire to retrieve etc, all well and good since these things didn't harm the dogs. In fact certain traits, like increased stamina and intelligence in some breeds, were probably a positive. Problems only seem to occur when humans start selecting for appearance alone, the dreaded "Cute" factor. Humans are programmed to find infantile features appealing, a useful adaptation that encourages us to care for our extremely helpless young. Unfortunately we carry that over to our liking for such features in other species, large eyes, snub noses, short limbs, rounded heads etc. All that is seriously bad news for a species that started out with long snouts and bodies built for distance running. So here we are, creating deformed, baby like, anxious, unhealthy and suffering creatures and we do it because we find it endearing.
Yeah, most utility dogs, especially the "fundamental breeds" such as shepherd dogs and guard dogs (mastiffs) are mostly fine, hounds already have weird things going on and speed-specialist dogs like greyhounds are quite weird if you ask me, but they were never as exaggerated as pitbulls, let alone pug-like "pet/toy" breeds.
Even dogs bred for entertainment were ruined before the "cuteness" thing... I can't blame a pitbull; it has no morals as an animal. But it's not a safe selection of dogs to get anymore. Because people bred an animal they watched die fighting one another. Now, with dog fighting banned, they're bred to be "designer dogs" that look tough with their frog-like legs and way too much bulk. The consequence is that we're left with dogs that lash out at families that raised them and are difficult to train. They're not safe to keep. When people breed "pets" for selfish desires without considering health, docile behavior, etc, things go wrong. Working dogs of the past were bred well because health mattered to their work. Aggressive dogs, unhealthy ones, and ones that couldn't work were not bred further. Now, people don't care if a dog can work. It's fine to have a non-working dog, but the dog still wants to run around and play. It doesn't deserve to be born gasping for air all its life. People have obese dogs laying around their houses and think it's cute. They try to anthropomorphize dogs and act as if humans are hurting the dog's feelings by trying to keep it healthy.
@@captkate-yz8kd clearly ethic for breeding animals should be enforced either theyre pet, laboratory animals, or livestock to ending this sufferer. After all it was much pleasant to have normally proportioned animals according to their species natural form, pleasant controlable temperament and healthy genetic; which make the animals have more normal enjoyable life and less frequent trip to vet for minor things.
Pug (co?) owner here. Wanted to share some thoughts. Great video, by the by. When my brother asked if a dog in the house is ok, we weren't expecting him to bring back a Pug (Consiering we are just an average middle class asian family). Back then, we didnt really know what a Pug is, or its multitude of problems. We started like any oblivious dog owner would. Days passed by, and we weren't doing a very good job at taking care of it. Dietary, Health and Well being complications are rife, and my brother had decided to get his shit together and really delve into keeping a Pug. We didn't know a Pug suffers in their every waking moment, and while they may not realize it, and sometimes frankly, nor do we, it continues to discover things with hope. We wanted to see him prosper. As we slowly learn how a Pug suffers, we all mutually developd a certain way we treat him. We rarely tied him on a leash or restricted him too much in public settings. We trained him to unleash his holy goodness at the appropriate places (to partial success), taught him dicipline so that we rarely have the need to leash him, and subtly, always refered to him with human pronouns. To us, he isn't a showpiece or a doll. We never really showed him off, and when someone approaches and adore him, we always chuckle in solemn uncertainy. We all wanted him to live the best dog life he could, not all dressed up, placed on a royal pillow and leashed, but naked, free, and rebellious. One of us. And rebellious he is. He's always spinning in circles and running and climbing. When we eat, he jumps to a chair and puts the upper halve of his body on the table, looking at us anxiously for food, and reluctantly, comply his beseechment. He would bite me if I take his food away because I forgot to add something in. And we wouldn't have it any other way. We now closely monitor his mental and physical health. Regular visits to the vet and the daycare, participating in events where he can socialize, and basic care like wiping his wrinkles and cleaning his ears. His health skyrocketed, though his obesity issues are still physically apparent, his muscles are strong and tough, and he didnt look half bad when he stands straight. Best thing yet, he snores way less these days. We would like to believe we are giving him the most dignified life we can. Other people frown upon us at how much freedom se give him, but never once did we change our ways. Yet, deep down, we understand that the longer he lives, the worse he is going to get. And likewise, all of us felt guilty of prolonging his suffering. In the end, he seems happy. Extremely so. Whenever we see him sitting at his favourite spots or beside us, we can see his face of contentment. While he never chose or may ever know why he is suffering, at the very least, he is as happy and dignified as he can be. He will never be just a dog to us, and we hope that whatever may cme, whenever it may be, we can forgive ourselves in his memory.
I think the dog "suffering" in every waking moment is a bit dramatic and humans anthropomorphizing the animal. The dog has been used to its conditions ever since birth, so what we may perceive as it suffering is probably different from its point of view, since that's its way of life. Dogs care about companionship, safety and attention, which is what you've given it, so I think there's no fault at all with you and your family giving the animal a home where its health issues are addressed and cared for. Frankly, I think in the eyes of other dogs of other breeds, the pug might actually be envied and put in a position of advantage from the extra attention it gets in general, due to its unconventional appearance and extra care it gets from its owners due to its natural needs.
@@derpro8125 what pugs go through can only be described as "suffering" since it fits the definition perfectly. Their "way of life" is suffering. It's more sad their normal state has to be this way. Also more attention doesn't make their life better. Pretty sure most humans with disabilities get more attention but most would trade that away to be normal. And what about the pugs that end up neglected?
@@polyfloralhoney I think you're assuming too much about what it means for a dog to live a happy life. By the fact that you're comparing it to the life of a human alone and the way we think about disabilities tells me that you need to re-examine how you understand dogs and what makes them tick.
@@derpro8125 doesn't matter if the dog is used to it tbh - if you had a list of genetic issues which affected your breathing, your walking etc 24/7, even if you had material comforts and companionship, i'd still consider you to be suffering to some extent, i guess the way we define it is in relation to a 'normal' life, but this is just semantics. I agree OP has no reason to feel bad as they're providing everything they can, but i think it's really strange to complain about anthropomorphising language in the context of a discussion between humans about a human-created problem.
@@TehAnimationSparxx It isn't unusual to anthromorphisize dogs, since many people are bonded to them closely and feel empathy towards them, but they really do not think the same way people do in relation to a lot of things. It being a health problem that is man-made doesn't mean that the dog feels the same way a human does about it. There are of course limits, based on the extremity of the issues to when it gets in the way of the dog actually living a fulfilling life as a pet and property to a human being. Dogs like other animals value things differently from humans, and I believe that anthromorphisizing animals leads to more misunderstandings of how they actually feel and don't feel about certain things.
In order to reverse this evolution, a minimal agility course should be added to every dog show. Dogs that are unable to breathe properly or whose legs are to short to move around, would no longer be winning shows. The breeders will always do what makes them the most money. In this case pairing dogs that combine looks with minimal health.
well bred brachy breeds can run, breathe and participate in agility like any other dogs. Actual breeders do not make a lot of money, as the cost of raising the litter is huge, and the breeding is purely focused on making healthy, breed standard abiding dog.
@laclara4020 there's really no such thing as a well- bred brachy tbh.. unless it's a mix that causes the flat headed gene not to occur at all. They do still struggle more than the average dog even if " well-bred" as you day. It is far too slow a process. Don't get me wrong, i loved my mom's old shih tzu so damn much, but I'd have loved if he could breathe.
Im a vet tech and i absolutely HATE brachycephalic breeds. Bulldogs, French bulldogs, pugs, etc. They aren't cute, they're disgusting. I don't get the appeal of something riddled with health issues that struggles to breath, its fucking cruel. 1 of the vets I work with is obsessed with bulldogs, has 1 and a frenchie, 1 of my coworkers has a bulldog and also thinks their adorable, 1 has a pug. I genuinely don't understand why people think these dogs are so cute.
I think we should stop breeding them, but I think the ones already alive deserve a loving home where they can get the help they need if anything goes wrong. You may not think they're cute, bur thy still deserve love especially with how hard it is to just live comfortably for them.
My mother had a pug. I went to feed it one day and it came running over and jammed its head into a corner and was growling and snarling. It was literally stuck in a corner. I picked her up and turned her around and she woofed down her food. I said, “Mom, your dog isn’t very smart.” On the other end of the spectrum my ex-girlfriend lived in a one room apartment. She asks me if I want to come over to see her new dog. So I ride my motorcycle over. I assumed it would be a regular dog. I walk in. Her dog was a Presa Canario, which looks like a Pit Bull except about three times as big. I think this dog weighed more than I did. I was like, “Holy shit! Why did get this dog?” She said her brother had some puppies and gave one to her. “This is a puppy?!” Fortunately, her dog really liked me, so whenever I came over to visit this dog would get excited and jump on me and knock me over and start giving me slobbery kisses. If this dog wasn’t heavier than me it was certainly stronger than me. Sometimes I used to walk her dog for poops. People would cross the street when they saw this dog. Her dog would finally take a poop. I had a plastic bag out to pick it up. I felt uncomfortable about picking up warm shits larger than my own. That’s why I’m more of a cat man.

These aren't dogs. There toys for people. A lot of people who "want" dogs simply want toys. Not a actual friend. It's why they feed them the same garbage, barely train them, and keep them locked them in cages. If they did actually care they'd actually train it incredibly well, allow it freedom, and feed them actual food.
When I was a kid my first dog was a Pug, his name was Buster and he had the hardest time breathing, especially when it was hot out. I could only take him for a walk for about 15 minutes before he started panting uncontrollably. I thought he was sick or had some sort of breathing problem but was too young to realize all pugs do. I still loved that dog more than anything and I still do, just a shame that I didn't know he was set up for a hard life from birth.
I prefer dogs that look like those in the records of ancient Egypt. They are like greyhounds but with upright ears. Luckily, I adopted a puppy from the street, and it has a similar shape, zero health problems and it is already 11 years old.
Dogs didn’t evolve directly from modern gray wolves! Instead, dogs and gray wolves share a common ancestor-an extinct, wolf-like species that split into two lineages around 20,000-40,000 years ago. Studies like one in Nature (2014) and another in Current Biology (2015) back this up.
Could you elaborate more on these studies as it sheds light for everyone. Nature and current biology seems vague, do you have the factual evidence to back dogs did not evolve from gray wolves. Meaning they’re 2 different species entirely
@@vikibotakk I don't have sources on me, but there are still distinct differences between wolves and dogs. There are actually wild dogs. Dogs have wider chests and walk at an angle (which generates 4 footprints to make it look like there are many dogs). Wolves have no chest and walk in their own footsteps (to make it look like there are less wolves). There's a lot of other differences as well, which makes it hard to believe that dogs evolved from the modern day wolf.

But it is more like a wheelchair, not because he is a doll. What has happened to the pug and many other breeds is so depressing- poor puppies
Your just supporting a Backyard breeder or puppymill or irresponsible owner either way unless you know them personally. You should be finding an ethical breeder or breed specific rescue and doing your research like a reasonable person
No, they should not be allowed to do that. First of all animals are not toys but living, breathing creaters who have their own needs and agenta. Secondly a kid is not responsible enough to take care of an animal. It should be the adult's job. A Kid doesn't even understand what having a caring of another creatures means. You can buy a pet shaped toy if want, not a real being for love of god. This is so egoistic.
The same thing is happening to cats (although in smaller numbers). Cat fanciers have created breeds with similarly maladaptive traits, such as extremely flat faces with high noses, dwarfism (to get short “Munchkin” legs), and deformed or missing whiskers. To create twisty cats (or “squittens”), a breeder _actively selected_ for a genetic deformity that causes the cat’s front leg bones not to develop properly. In extreme cases, the twisty cat has useless, flipper-like front paws that seem to be attached at the shoulder. Cats are valued for their independent nature; it’s particularly sad to see breeders selecting for traits that make them dependent on humans.
As a cat lover, my heart always sinks while watching Munchkin cats jumping, trying to catch a toy or climb up cat trees, fail and terribly squash their faces on the ground. Why taking a cat, indeed a pet, but first a hunter, and rob it of what makes it a hunter? Accepting a kitty means accepting the predatory instincts as well. It's not funny watching Munchkins desperately trying to catch the prey.
I don't see how Bulldogs, Pogs are cute? They have very bad skull deformation, hanging skin off their faces. Pogs eye balls are extended so outside of their skull - it feels like they are gonna pop out (not to mention high risk of damaging them, considering how far they are exposed. It makes me really uncomfortable. And it's really painful to hear them so heavily breathe and scream as they are about to choke to death thanks to horrible genetic experience turning them into permanently crippled breed
Love this so much. I don't know how anyone who claims to love dogs can happily live with a brachycephalic breed just watching it suffer - especially pugs, frenchies and bulldogs who seem to be the most affected. By buying these dogs, you're also contributing to the issue by encouraging more breeding. Even if you find an 'ethical' breeder - the problems are already bred into every individual purebred dog - and it's too late to fix them. You didn't mention it but a couple of the clips also showed people dressing dogs up. This really makes me uncomfortable. Most, if not all, dogs find getting stuffed into outfits stressful...why would you do this to your beloved pet for your own entertainment? The creator of this video has it all totally spot on - we really do need to reasses our relationship with pets.

I think with this video, Indie dogs are probably the healthiest dogs. A lot of them were once adopted and left behind or completely ignored by humans. They can live in almost any climate condition(depends on the specific dog breed's local area's temperature too)with almost any food. It's very less susceptible to diseases. I have adopted a beloved indie dog, she has only been sick once in her 4 years and got healed up before we took her to the vet. She had some sheding at first but it'd never be even close to how much a Labrador sheds. She has occasional stomach ache, she throws up a bit but then she eats grass and heals herself. I only have to deworm her and get her a rabies shot. I know they don't look fancy like other breeds but they are adorable, independent, loyal, loving and I never had to put in a lot of energy to train or keep my dog engaged. It is the owners duty of these breeds to give them a fulfilling life. Its the least they can do in order to ease the constant suffering, in my opinion, because they obviously can't do much. If nobody is going to buy them because they're inbred, then they're never going to have loving owners. These animals were never asked to be made this way, but it's all us owners can do, unfortunately. I hope people aren't discouraged to buy pugs anymore just because of this video, because all dogs deserve loving families. Not just the properly bred ones.

He was so sweet and relaxed, but despite him being a bit lazy, he would always get up to see me, he’d beg for the food on the table, and leftovers which were healthy for him were given. He shed a lot, he snored when he slept. He had severe seizures when we had to put him down because of how bad it was, leaving him unresponsive to his name, to my voice. I am now thinking more about the panting and tiredness he sustained while walking. I don’t know if his seizures were caused by his breathing, but it haunts me now. Breeding of these dogs like this is a problem. For hope, there are pugs being created with better breathing. I’d recommend finding reputable breeders, or if you want to give help to a dog with these issues you can find rescue shelters.
Actually dogs do not descend from the grey wolf, rather they are the canine that's the most genetically similar to dogs. Kinda like what Neanderthals are to us. They shared a common ancestor many, ages ago. And we do not know what they were like exactly.
@RyuHardGore yes. We can also cross donkeys and zebras with horses, big cats with other big cats (lions, tigers, leopards), polar bears with grizzly bears. And you already know that despite them not being as close together as gray wolves and dogs, coyotes can also mix with them. The last common ancestor was probably 80.000 years ago and it was not the gray wolf, it was an unknown species according to mitochondrial DNA and sequencing
They actually do need to be quite genetically close to produce fertile offspring. Dogs and wolves are more like humans and Neanderthals than humans and chimps, since chimps are a separate genus (pan) and Neanderthals were the same genus as we are (homo). (Edited because I get that you said "kinda" but it's still a misleading comparison.) The difference is that humans' closest genetic relatives are now extinct, while dogs' are still living. Dogs and wolves are also far genetically closer than species who are able to breed, but have sterile offspring, such as horses and zebras. The best comparison you made was the example of polar bears and grizzly bears, since pizzly bears are actually fertile as far as we know. This of course doesn't mean that dogs descend from modern wolves, but it does mean they are very closely related - to the point where it's debated if they are separate species or just subspecies. There's a whole "species problem" in evolutionary theory about where we should draw the line, so whether dogs and gray wolves should be considered entirely separate species is a matter of debate even among scientists.
I think "many ages" is also misleading because tens of thousands of years is barely any time, evolutionarily speaking. Humans' closest known ancestor, homo erectus, lived 2 million years ago, and we evolved fairly recently (~300,000 years). If we're using human history as a scale, 27,000-40,000 years is a long time, but on an evolutionary time scale, that's quite recent.
I agree with alot of this to a degree. The Pugs actually dont physically suffer as much as you make it seem in this video. Dogs are incredibly hearty and believe it it not, they adjust to slightly more difficult breathing and other differences. Clearly they were bred as companion/ show pieces for ancient people, but you dont need to look at a Pug and start crying over its suffering. When they do get old or sick, these become more noticeable ofcourse. Even with these negative attributes they are still capable of living a normal life, for the most part. Says alot about the resilience of animals/ people.
Domesticated animals are created by selective breeding, not evolution. The traits they have that get them chosen to breed are what pleases humans. Lao dogs were invented by the very wealthy to keep them company. terriers were bred to hunt small animals, for example. The same is true for cows, sheep, horses, etc
Who is to say that the selective breeding itself isn't a form of evolution by itself? These animals do way better in a domesticated environment at what they're needed for than their wild counterparts do and are outcompeting them from an evolutionary perspective.
i freaking love dogs i subbed im happy yt algorithm gave me your video i think pugs are cute but it's not worth it to have a dog suffering and bad breathing problems just for looks that is so messed up im excited to learn more about my favorite animals and dogbreeds by being entertained at the same time!!
I read that dogs were domesticated 40,000 years ago by Siberian tribes. They supposedly killed a pack of wolves and when they were going to kill the puppies, they felt sorry for them and adopted them. When the puppies grew up, they were very loyal to humans and that's where the relationship was born.
Canis lupus and canis familiaris ain’t the same thing. Dogs came from a type of wild dog whose closest living relatives are the Akita inu, Shiba Inu, new guinea singing dog and dingo. Over time genes from other canines like wolves, wild dogs from other areas and probably foxes got mixed in to it causing many different traits
I have never found dog like pugs and bulldogs "cute" and I never will. I remember seeing a pug for the first time as a kid. It wasn't the real thing, only an image in a picture book about different dog breeds, but it looked so hideous that I had to flip to the next page instantly. From then on every time I reread that book, I had to pick up the two pages depicting the pug the same way you would pick up a dirty sock, and flip them over as fast as I could before resuming reading normally. Imagine the amount of confusion I felt when I found out many people find these dogs not only perfectly normal, but also adorable Fast forward to my teenage years. My English had gotten much better (it wasn't my first language) and I now had access to the internet, which meant access to more information. One night while binge watching science videos about animals on youtube, a video in the recommendation bar caught my eyes. I can't remember its title but it was probably something along the line of "the truth about bulldogs". Anyway I clicked on it, not expecting anything out of the line compared to the videos I had watched so far, and god was I wrong. Instead of a lighthearted scientific breakdown of the breed, what I got was a grueling deep dive into the history of bulldogs and other brachycephalic dogs. How they came to be, why they looked the way they looked, their health problems and the pain they went through every second of their existence, etc. The content of that video was actually not much different than the one I'm commenting on right now, but it was straight up a horror movie to teenage me. All of the sudden, so many of my questions about these dogs were answered in the worst way possible. As much as I hated pugs and bulldogs, the people that bred them and the people who encouraged the breeders were even more revolting To this day I still feel angry and sad whenever I see a pug. Unfortunately they're very common where I live since most owners here don't know or give a shit about the ethicality of dog breeds. To be honest, just by looking at the way they treat animals in general, I doubt that they consider pets as living beings
Everytime I see someone who walks or owns dogs like pugs or sausage dogs I get disgusted because it's these type of people who allow the twisted breeders to keep deforming and damaging dogs to this extent and giving them money to allow these unethical practices while there are plenty of natural dogs who are left in shelters than never get adopted 😢
At least Dachshunds were breeded specifically to get into rabbit holes and pull them out for hunters. Pugs were created to be novelty toys for rich people...
@@majinkevincithey were bred to hunt badgers. It's literally in the name. Dachshund means 'badger hound'. Hence they also often have an aggressive temperament.
Ok but, what if the pug was adopted from a shelter? Should they all just be left to suffer in shelters for the rest of their lives for being born wrong? I agree we should stop breeding them, but the ones that exist now deserve to live as good of a life as possible despite their medical issues.
Personally, Chihuahuas are the ones that confuse me. Not because I am in the tendency to hate them and the prejudice around their race, I love them, except for the apple head for those Injust feel sad. Of all the breeds, they are one of the healthiest, longest-lived and most similar to their ancestors...How a wolf transformed into that tiny ancestor in pre-Hispanic times intrigues me greatly.
slightly unrelated but your style of editing & narration is so good! :3 excited to see more videos of yours. you delve much deeper into this topic & the history of pugs than any other video i’ve seen too! my favorite dog breeds are golden retrievers & dalmatians, i generally prefer more “natural”-looking breeds if that makes sense? it makes me feel like they’re not suffering just by being brought into life. i wish all dogs could be as healthy and happy, able to run, play and live their life to its fullest without struggling to breathe. i have a cat, he’s a mixed breed so he has it better than “pure” himalayans but he’s still part-himalayan and it makes me worry about his future - i didn’t breed him myself obviously, i adopted him from a relative and i want to give him the best life i can, and make him the healthiest he can be despite how unfortunate the circumstances of his birth were
As someone that is far from being a dog lover, I have lived long enough to see the radical changes the idea of a pet has suffered through the years, mostly in the last 10 to 15 years. Just like many other things it became quite profitable For corporations , I started seeing animals allowed in the most ridiculous places, small dogs in baby strollers, indoor restaurants with dogs seating on the lap of their owners while they eat… I started seeing commercials of any product involving a family, including a dog (or pet)every single time, social media started showing me pet videos every day, everywhere I looked I felt like they were selling me the idea that my life couldn’t be complete without a pet. It has gotten to the point where I’ve met people that prefer dogs over humans in almost any way and they praise him like they were the highest deities. I mentioned in the beginning that I am far from being a dog lover because I feel that term doesn’t mean what I thought anymore. I do love animals and that includes dogs, but the daily life has become so ridiculous when it comes to this subject, it has made me unable to understand these people. The amount of suffering they go through , being forced to live in tiny apartments in the middle of a populated city, dressing them up, breeding them, choosing them and accommodating them to human necessities And superficial standards, while claiming they love them more than anything… Sorry, no.
That lack of doglike features, especially the snout, is why I never had or will have a "flat faced" breed. I might be a dog racist but if a dog doesn't have a snout or fur it's more of a "creature" to me than a proper dog. At least not wanting or having them helps those breeds passively by lowering demand for this kind of hurtful deformation.
Great editing and storytelling, interesting topic, especially for a first video. Well done. I find myself very interested in dogs crossbreeding these days, I guess this led me here.... not that you asked for topics for future videos...
Thank you!! I really appreciate this 🤎 We will be releasing videos about dog breeds, dog skills, dog mysteries as well and of course how dogs and humans interact ✌🏼
Wow I just checked out your channel and saw that this is your first and only video (for now). I thought your channel was much bigger, this is a very high quality first video, please keep making more. ❤🐶
Fantastic video! The only thing I should add is that the domestic dogs aren't considered a different species anymore, but a subspecies of Canis Lupus, Canis Lupus Familiaris.
Awesome video, can’t believe it’s your second upload, it‘s done so well! Thank you so much for spreading awareness about the horrible consequences of our human narcissism
As a 'cat person', I can't say that I care for dogs or ever really have; but I have always felt so badly for pugs. I must also mention that I don't believe that it makes sense to only be appalled by the existence of pugs when every single breed has been inbred and engineered to bring you what you love today. This is why I think that it's even more insane-the thought that this is what the ruling class has produced as it spawn on Earth, a testament to the hearts of man.
Cat's, as rodent control, improved food storage and thus made civilization possible. Civilization made technology possible and thus led to the internet. The internet led to cat videos. Therefore, cats have indirectly hosted their own transmissions across space and time. Humans are merely their tool.
Love this video! Wish more people would understand this! Sucks that people keep breeding dogs for their looks rather than health ☹️ excited to see what other dog videos you’ll have 😁
Sucks that _greedy, irresponsible_ people keep _over_ breeding dogs -for their looks rather than health- in general, including deformed, inbred 'designer dogs' that mainly exist as accessories to impress their owners' friends☹ Also looking forward to more videos!
when i found out how horrible the process and effects of inbreeding were to get to the point that dog breeds are now as a teenager (i was obsessed with a lot of dog breeds as a kid) i became so disillusioned with purebred dogs and the concept of owning animals as a whole. ever since then i have only adopted and rescued street animals and i side eye people who purchase animals, honestly…

ONE drawback in the video: The graphics show up for so few seconds that viewers often miss the moment to hit pause, let alone actually see what is in them.
@ 7:24 those earlier pugs look cute too. And less...swished. I dunno. Until recently I thought I was just letting my imagination run wild when I see pugs because they always struck me as looking like they have breathing and walking problems because of how flat their face is and how compact their bodies are. Guess it wasn't a leap.
I don't want any dog has no chance of survival in the wild because of its body type or other shortcomings. Pugs, French and English Bulldogs are examples. Artificial selection often goes freakishly wrong
@@redimane1152 I'm still pretty sure that they're both _subspecies_ of that extinct ancestor. Like I said, the super-high degree of match between the Canis Lupus Lupus and domestic dog genomes has the latter currently classified as Canis Lupus Familiaris, a _subspecies_ of Canis Lupus. Now, you are correct in that dogs didn't evolve from the Grey Wolf subspecies; I mean, nature _is_ messy and the evolutionary history of different species is never neat and tidy. But to insist that Domestic Dogs are "a separate species" not only flies in the face of genome comparison, but has several sometimes problematic reasons behind it: (1) Wanting "man's best friend" to remain on its pedestal as special, which in turn comes from the egotistical human desire to make anything associated with us "special" and "higher"; (2) Ensuring the demonization Gray Wolves doesn't slip, by keeping them as separate from "man's best friend" as possible; (3) Refusal to believe that animals which look so, so, _so radically different_ are all biologically the same, which itself originates in the _horrid_ ideology that appearance determines fundamental biological differences, something that is still being used to classify some people as "not-really-human" based on appearance. And it's #3 that has me pushing back on you so hard. Nothing against you, specifically. I've just had this argument way, way too many times: Starts with me pointing out that the domestic dog genome and gray wolf genome show that they're both the same species. Other person then freaks out, insisting that a Pit Bull and a German Sheppard can't be the same species, let alone a Pug and a German Sheppard, so obviously a dog can't be a wolf! I then have to explain what different dog breeds _used to_ look like 300 years ago, only to be faced with massive pushback and denial. And, ultimately, the topic then changes to _humans,_ because if a Pug, a Pit-Bull, a German Sheppard, a Beagle, and a Dachshund can all be the same species, then that would mean humans with one complexion+facial-features would have to be the same species as humans with another complexion+facial-features. Sadly, I've had this conversation many, many, many times over the past 30 years. I am *_NOT_* accusing you of thinking this, BTW. I am giving you the reason why I'm pushing back on this continued attempt to keep Canis Lupus Familiaris separate from Canis Lupus Lupus and the other 30+ subspecies of Canis Lupus. It really is both sad and horrid that this carp about humans keeps happening, and pointing to domestic dog and domestic cat breeds is one way to undermine this barbaric thinking.
It's a lot of the small dogs that get the worse end of it, originally bred smaller for hunting down rats and mice from what I remember, now they're being used as toys of evolution. How do you make this already small dog even smaller so it can sit in a purse or make sounds that we'll find cute. Pitbulls are a wonderful example too as they were bred for fighting but because they're bred as well to be trainable we can correct this. However we can't correct the pitbulls cousin the pocket/micro American bully where it literally can't walk, has breathing problems, and a life span of 3-8 years.
We're like the Qu from All Tommorows. Bending biological material to our will to make the "perfect" pet or companion, or just because we can. The instagram XL bully puppy mills are the most outwardly horrific example in my opinion.
This is exactly what a dog is its loyal as fuck and it’s warn us if there are any dangerous ! Also it’s love cuddles and take humans on walks . Dogs is humans best friend
Imagine a very advanced alien civilization that crossbreeds humans with deformities, keeping them living in agony, just because they think deformed humans are cute. That's what we did with these dogs.
I found i puppy walking outside my home in 2018. He was very young (only some months old) and had a broken leash on his neck. I thought he either broke from his previous home or was abandoned. Needless to say, i took him in. My dad bathed him, my mom made him a new collar and i got a friend to play with (or pet in my free time) That doesn't have to do anything with pugs. But does have to do with dog sales. If only people would adopt abandoned stray puppies to care for rather than run after pure breeds or luxury breeds. Because in the end of the day, i like dogs, regardless of any breed.
The fact that humans who lack proper adult comminucation with other humans uses dogs and cats as coping mechanism to not feel lonely and just ignore them when not needed shows how much they actually care about the animals. Goes on Vacation.... Leaves the cat/dog alone or with someone. Goes to work, again same, leaves them alone all day. Some even leave them on streets when not needed. Do you think these people really care about them ? They are not even Animal Lovers. People mock Robot Dogs like Boston Dynamics, but trust me, once they become "CUTE ENOUGH", they will replace actual dogs and cats, cause their maintainance would be even less, which is what these "ANIMAL LOVERS" want. As less of maintainance while having same companionship as a human, who you can talk to about your problems but don't have to listen to theirs. And yes, they need to be "CUTE ENOUGH" else it is as good as food. Chicken are not that cute, so ok eating. Dogs and cats are cute so no eating. lol the hypocrisy of humans and discrimination on the basis of looks has gone from humans to animals. Show them a cute looking "modified cow" and they will keep them as pet, and go on to k!ll and eat another one.
This explanation is a bit simplistic and misses out some very important information. No, dogs were not initially "bred just to create breeds" nor for any other random or subjective aesthetics. Not at all. They were bred and selected to work, to help man. A wolf would just eat your sheep after all, one selcted to guard the sheep was far more usefull. Even a pug was bred for a purpose, that of companionship, to keep the owner warm at night, personal alarm dogs etc and even pugs were once not deformed health compromised waste of spaces. Dogs only became genetic messed up inbreds when gene pools were closed with the miss guided notion of maintaining purity arrived. The notion of purity itself is a long story. Parallel to this dogs were still bred to work primarily, many of these were never bred within closed gene pools. It wasn't until showing dogs became fashionable amongst high society that many breeds were bred for the sole purpose of very subjective looks alone and within closed gene pools. Even then working dogs bred in open gene pools continued to be bred. As long as they had a working function and were needed for that function they were bred along strict lines of ability rather than exacting looks. Today you may find both showing genes and working ones in a small handful of dogs. The showing dogs are the Hapsburgs of dogs bred in closed stud books and bred for ever extreme looks. The future of these latter dogs is extinction unless breeders are able to forget the Nazi principles of purity which will end genetic bottle necks and genetic diseases and step back from breeding them for extremes in looks that compromise health and function.
it would be so awesome if you made a video/post in community about dogs who are THE CLOSEST to the great grey wolf species! i suffer from autism, and dogs/animals were always my best friends, and i think people would be so grateful to know which species live a happy and burden-free lives. i cant even say in words how much pain i feel when i see dogs similar to pugs, my heart and mind aches whenever i think about what humans did to our great companions. great video, thank you so much!
Personally I don’t understand why we are still breeding dogs, especially to make ones to have desired features. There are so many dogs that are already on this earth without a caring home, why do we need more… I personally would like for dog breeders stop trying to make “new” dogs.
1:39 I thought that hauls meant a person or a car pulling something. I think you meant howls (howling, a long, doleful cry uttered by an animal such as a dog or wolf).
@thedoginspector No worries. 👍🏻 It was IMO quite a good video you made pointing out everything wrong with the breed, and why pugs are the way they are. Well presented and informative. 👏🏻
People need to stop breeding purebreds. the way he talks about it makes not much sense though. Golden retrievers came around years and years after the pug. The pug has been around since 400 BCE, genuinely one of the oldest dog breeds. And back yard bred vs well bred make a difference. Well bred pugs do not suffer. i still can't wrap my head around the fact that siberian husky and a pug is in the same species while alligator and crocodile is not even in the same genus.
amazing!😯

My mother went to the Netherlands to adopt a Pekingese because his face wasn’t as flat as the ones in my country. She wanted a “healthier” dog.
because crossing a failed breed is a bad idea ?
Countries are actually starting to do that. I forget which, but one of the two breeds of English bull terrier (because there's the standard and the mini) is now illegal to purebreed in my country. You HAVE to cross breed it either with the other type of bull terrier or with something else. And it's because of health issues.
I think humans should breed to give dogs longer lives than to shorten what little time on earth they already have
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Fix that sentence please 😂

🥹🤎
Let's hope they eventually succeed and people stop breeding the ones that can't live properly

Mix them
The sad thing is that, for the most part, selective breeding began with the aim of encouraging certain traits that helped dogs do specific jobs.
I don't understand how people find pugs cute. They're horrifying, the bulging eyes and the constant heavy breathing! (Ofc I don't blame the dogs.)
@@frufruJyup. How can people find it endearing and deliberately breed to be like that, despite the dogs themselves suffer from such condition.

Actual breeders do not make a lot of money, as the cost of raising the litter is huge, and the breeding is purely focused on making healthy, breed standard abiding dog.
i’m sorry why do you even need these shows in the first place? it’s just ridiculous, pointless and exploitive.

@laclara4020 there's really no such thing as a well- bred brachy tbh.. unless it's a mix that causes the flat headed gene not to occur at all. On the other end of the spectrum my ex-girlfriend lived in a one room apartment.

The next time I went to board the dogs she watched him move and had to agree, it was a prance, then amended that it was a strut.
why would they function as a hunting dog ,when they are made to protect from small animals like foxes or big rats .
I have a Norwegian Elkhound as well named "Zsolt, "and I had a female before him named "Lizy." Of course, Lizy passed away when I was younger, but as of now, Zsolt isn't in the best of health.

I had a British bulldog called Ozzy, he was my favourite boy.
Nothing personal, just business. Deformed dogs sell better and afterwards they bring hundred times more money by veterinarian services.

Actually dogs do not descend from the grey wolf, rather they are the canine that's the most genetically similar to dogs. Kinda like what Neanderthals are to us. They shared a common ancestor many, ages ago. And we do not know what they were like exactly.
sure? because i'm sure you can cross dogs with wolves
@RyuHardGore my point is that the species don't really need to be that close together in order to crossbreed
Says alot about the resilience of animals/ people.
the weirdest thing is that dogs are slowly being more like cats
Domesticated animals are created by selective breeding, not evolution. The traits they have that get them chosen to breed are what pleases humans. Lao dogs were invented by the very wealthy to keep them company. terriers were bred to hunt small animals, for example. The same is true for cows, sheep, horses, etc
True 🤎
Who is to say that the selective breeding itself isn't a form of evolution by itself? These animals do way better in a domesticated environment at what they're needed for than their wild counterparts do and are outcompeting them from an evolutionary perspective.
Selective breeding is nothing more than artificial or induced evolution. Animals usually choose their own partners to mix their genes.
i freaking love dogs
i subbed im happy yt algorithm gave me your video
i think pugs are cute but it's not worth it to have a dog suffering and bad breathing problems just for looks
that is so messed up

Thank you very much!! It's a pleasure for me :) I think you are gonna love the channel 👌🏼
I read that dogs were domesticated 40,000 years ago by Siberian tribes. They supposedly killed a pack of wolves and when they were going to kill the puppies, they felt sorry for them and adopted them. When the puppies grew up, they were very loyal to humans and that's where the relationship was born.
Its an interesting theory too
There's no way of knowing exactly how it went
Canis lupus and canis familiaris ain’t the same thing. Dogs came from a type of wild dog whose closest living relatives are the Akita inu, Shiba Inu, new guinea singing dog and dingo. Over time genes from other canines like wolves, wild dogs from other areas and probably foxes got mixed in to it causing many different traits

For real. We have problems figuring out events that happened few decades ago, let alone 40,000 years.
"Sa tuwing tumatalino ang tao, sumasama ang mundo."
Imagine the amount of confusion I felt when I found out many people find these dogs not only perfectly normal, but also adorable
Fast forward to my teenage years. As much as I hated pugs and bulldogs, the people that bred them and the people who encouraged the breeders were even more revolting
To this day I still feel angry and sad whenever I see a pug.
@@Katharoni your 100% correct they need to stop being bred but everything else such as adoption is great
I bet you say this and still consume animal products
Just like many other things it became quite profitable For corporations , I started seeing animals allowed in the most ridiculous places, small dogs in baby strollers, indoor restaurants with dogs seating on the lap of their owners while they eat…
I started seeing commercials of any product involving a family, including a dog (or pet)every single time, social media started showing me pet videos every day, everywhere I looked I felt like they were selling me the idea that my life couldn’t be complete without a pet.
The amount of suffering they go through , being forced to live in tiny apartments in the middle of a populated city, dressing them up, breeding them, choosing them and accommodating them to human necessities And superficial standards, while claiming they love them more than anything…
Sorry, no.
Thank you!! I really appreciate this 🤎
We will be releasing videos about dog breeds, dog skills, dog mysteries as well and of course how dogs and humans interact ✌🏼

I am shocked, I read a comment saying it’s your first video (on the channel) and it left my mouth WIDE OPEN. Create more content dude! It’s awesome
Why are they downgrading dogs
Imma hit the bell. Great video!
🤎
I don't want any dog has no chance of survival in the wild because of its body type or other shortcomings. Pugs, French and English Bulldogs are examples. Artificial selection often goes freakishly wrong
2:38 Actually, genome comparison shows that dogs are not a separate species, but _a subspecies_ of wolf.
That's debatable. More recent evidence shows that they both evolved from an extinct species of wolves, making grey wolves and dogs sister species.
I thought this channel had a million subscribers when i opened the video. Such a job with editing and narration 👏
Even then it’s an uphill battle for Pitbulls too…
We're like the Qu from All Tommorows. Bending biological material to our will to make the "perfect" pet or companion, or just because we can. The instagram XL bully puppy mills are the most outwardly horrific example in my opinion.
Can't believe that this is your first video
🤎🤎🤎🤎
This is exactly what a dog is its loyal as fuck and it’s warn us if there are any dangerous ! Also it’s love cuddles and take humans on walks .
Dogs is humans best friend
Imagine a very advanced alien civilization that crossbreeds humans with deformities, keeping them living in agony, just because they think deformed humans are cute.
That's what we did with these dogs.
I found i puppy walking outside my home in 2018. He was very young (only some months old) and had a broken leash on his neck. I thought he either broke from his previous home or was abandoned. Needless to say, i took him in. My dad bathed him, my mom made him a new collar and i got a friend to play with (or pet in my free time)
That doesn't have to do anything with pugs.
