I cannot fathom why a grown adult- knowing that he would be needing nsfw artwork for his comic- would seek out an artist that he knew would be in _high school._ Actually, come to think of it, I'm also kind of surprised the teacher just passed that contact on to a student without (I assume?) looking into him at all. Like, finding opportunities for your students is great, but you NEED to know who you're sending those kids towards, and exactly what's going to be asked of them. This was definitely a strange and uncomfortable situation, but it sounds like it had the potential to go a lot worse.

I hated acrylics and water color and didn't get my art posted outside the art room often and never read it put in the cases around the school! UGH man, the way art is taught at school is so bad!!
I've been teaching my 30 yo brother this past year and he made me realize that not a single technique or even fundamental theory was ever taught to him. It was always about copying realism with no understanding of shapes, volume or how to mix a goddamn colour! Nothing to spark his imagination - it's no fun AND you don't even learn anything in the end??
And my experience with college wasn't any different. It was once again just making the thing over and over again until it starts to look somewhat good. But man... I got better, sure; all those mindless studies later and I still couldn't make anything on my own - because all I knew how to do is copy what I see. That time could have been used so much better if I hadn't wasted it repeating the same mistakes without realising...
At least digital stuff is being taught a little better (graphic design, 3d and such) but drawing? A skill you could VERY much use in those other areas? Everybody gotta be on their own lmao

I am glad that your teacher had your back. I went to a half-day trade school for digital art during my junior and senior years of highschool. In my senior year I was branching into making websites (mostly using DreamWeaver, this was when it was owned by microsoft, just before adobe bought it) and so when a local history group reached out wanting a website designed, she came to me asking if I would like the project.
Of course I had the same reaction, was excited that this could be my "big break" and began diligently working on a website for these people. Unfortunately they began to get very irate at its simplicity and that I wasn't fully coding the site to the degree they wanted, and had to explain that while I did have basic html knowledge, that this was an ART project and I had originally just been asked to design the layout, buttons, graphics, etc for the site.
Well I went down the rabbit hole of making fully functional websites (mind you this was in like, 2004 and there were not a lot of options for slapping a site together like there are now) and trying to do all this work for them despite the fact that I was a highschool art student and they were getting all this for /free/ .
Well, it was towards the end of the school year. I got graded on the project despite the fact that I was still working with these history group folks to get their page functional. They more or less began to bully me about it and I decided right then and there to just... cut off ties. Maybe I could have handled it better, but I was 18 and had had enough. I deleted my work from their website host and stopped responding to them. When my teacher asked about it I just deflected and said I wasn't done yet.
About a month after I graduated the teacher called me at home about the project saying that they had been reaching out to her since I was non-responsive. I told her flat out that I already got graded for that project, and was not dealing with it any longer. If they wanted to pay me for my work I'd send the existing files over to them (we were each allowed to take home a thumb drive with our school projects) but otherwise they should seek out a professional web designer. She asked if I'd send the files to her directly - I said no. She was very livid with that answer.
I later found out that she got paid for another student's restaurant menu design that a local diner had commissioned, and wonder if perhaps she had accepted money for my project without me knowing, which is why she was so determined to get the files.

It’s essentially opaque watercolor, it goes on super smoothly and you don’t have to worry about all colors changing as they dry like you do acrylic! Man, good on the teacher for having your back on this. Big yikes energy from that guy.
Personally, I kinda wish I could draw. I was naturally gifted musically, so I was pushed more into that, and this only took one full art class my senior year of high school. I found I was pretty okay at landscape painting stuff - I did a landscape inkwash I was genuinely proud of.
Problem is, I can't really draw. I have near-complete aphantasia, so when I try to picture anything closing my eyes, I see literal static or the lsd-moving-shapes thing, often without color. No image. And as an intensively creative person who can do most other creative arts pretty well, it sucks. It also sucked because my art teacher was incredibly unsympathetic and straight-up told me I'd never be cut out for art.
So all that to say, it's awesome to see you overcome the struggles of being not-as-good as your peers and doing what you love! I just wish I could switch on the images and/or figure out how to turn figure geometry into a sketch without wanting to break my art supplies.

I didn't take the prerequisites because I got randomly switched from college art to another advanced art class, and they just assumed I had the prerequisites for the advanced art class. All year, I've been getting talked down to by my art teacher because of how I didn't take my prerequisites. I'm always getting reprimanded while no one else is. It's genuinely sucked so much passion out of art for me. I've been working on drawing people as a hobby for the last 7 or so years and she just randomly assumed I can't draw people and went on a whole rant about it. I feel like no one gets as much crap from her as I do and I just don't see art as very fun anymore, it's really made me lose my confidence in my ability to draw.

Man I can totally relate with the High School Art class stories.
In my 9th grade art class, I struggled a lot. None of my art came out good at all. I wasn't in to any of the projects. And I suspect that I was actually graded harsher on my art than everyone else, because I was seen by everyone as very artistic. That year I literally won an award for "Most artistic student."
It may have felt to the teacher that I wasn't putting my all into my projects. I was, I just sucked at everything we were doing. I didn't have that creative spark. And at that point I was only really good at doodling and coming up with ideas.
I passed with an 89.5, which rounded up to a 90%.
It's the lowest grade I got in all of high school, and I almost lost my 4.0 GPA due to it. As someone who was very studious and took grades seriously, it was extremely frustrating and demoralizing to know that of all things, ART CLASS was the one class that almost destroyed my perfect grade.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude Рік тому +1

@@makadoodledoo On an unweighted scale, a 4.0 GPA is the highest GPA you can get. It means you got A's in all of your classes. If you get anything lower than an A in a class, your GPA drops below 4.0 and you can't fix it.
On a weighted GPA system, you can typically go up to 5.0 (or so the internet tells me). But our school system was unweighted. This is in the United States, btw. Idk how GPAs work in other nations.
I did take the class seriously, I was just not good at it. My best effort was not enough to reach the standard placed upon me by my teacher. I will admit that not being into any of the projects likely led to my "best effort" not really being my full best. But it was the best I could muster.
And I tried really hard on my final project specifically because I knew my GPA would drop if I didn't do good enough. I remember hitting roadblocks and getting really frustrated, despite the fact I was quite interested in the project. But I guess it was _JUST_ good enough to get me through.

The issue is asking a minor to do the drawing, not the drawing itself.
It depends on country, but for the most part/in sane countries, drawings themselves are legally fine as long as they're not of real people. Some of the more extreme "tags" are weird, but missing the harm element that would happen in reality (some tags aren't even possible in reality). Asking someone < 18 to draw 18+ content though...that's less fine, though again depends on country. Gets complex quickly, because you have to factor both laws regarding 18+ stuff but also just plain old labor laws, which can require parental consent etc.
I suppose legality of this case depends on exactly what the guy wanted drawn. It might be "technically" okay per law if the act is depicted, but the 18+ part isn't drawn/off-panel for example. Still creepy or at minimum poorly thought out to commission this through a high school though!

The amount of times she insulted me work, actively came over and ruined what I was working on and when she said others could reduce the work they had for time reasons, she wouldn’t let me. Not for nothing, because I completely understand the frustration of not being able to draw things the way you want to draw them. But as someone who has studied art at a pretty famous school, it’s important to know that art skills require a solid foundation, and unfortunately, that means a lot of boring stuff like figure drawing, still lives, and perspective studies. I used to RESENT this, until I realized what an enormous positive impact learning about these things had on the work I did in my own time. A professor once told me that stylized work is fine, and it’s important to find your own unique style - but you have to understand how to draw things realistically in order to break realism and find your niche in a way that feels developed and deliberate, and not just amateur. :) we all have our own journey, and I’m sorry you had such a negative experience with your professor. I really like the art style of the art in the background. Very good!

also kinda weird i think that this guy wanted to pitch a comic to publishers and then went looking specifically for a child to draw it. a ton of adults have tried to underpay me for my art because they didn't think i would understand that a full illustration is not worth 5 bucks (my mom once tried that >_>)

Coming from someone who grossly undercharges for his own work ( I sold a 53-hour commission for $150 recently, to give perspective on what i mean by "grossly undercharges" ) wow. Your own mom? That's messed up. A parent should be the most understanding of the value of time out of anyone, considering they sacrificed years of their own time to raise another human being.

Hol up what? As another child sometimes i feel that they’re trying to over pay me because I once got asked if I’d do a sketch in my style for them for 30 bucks and agreed to pay before I started working on it; but had to turn it down because I currently still don’t take commissions 😮

@@v4n1ty92 holy cow you need to push up your prices a little, getting paid 3 dollars every hour for your work is not okay. If you’re willing to put in 50 hours of your time I’m sure your art is worth a lot more than that. You need to advocate for yourself because no one else will, you deserve alot more for your time and dedication. Also nice username it’s similair to one I have :)))

I added your webcomic to my collection of webcomics to read, sorry to hear that you went through that, I can only imagine this guy is now on a watch list and probably restricted from being anywhere near a High school let alone being able to contact one. I know personally i was like you in High school always drawing and sketching... ya know.. instead of doing my schoolwork >.> * coughs* Buuuuut unlike you i never really focused myself on starting my own webcomic beyond daydreaming and plot lining in my head how the story would go.

Not sure how I stumbled across this vid but glad I watched it as I can relate to your experiences with art classes back when I was in school a million years ago, I loved drawing more than anything, still do but never took it to any professional level, and I too had some hard ass teachers, though also supportive ones. My issue was my poor writing ability that lead me to struggle with course work. This was back in 01/02 in the UK, not a school particularly interested in art instead of sports too, so even though I did do some good work, nothing really got much notice.
I got the chance to work at my old school as an art and design technician (name is fancier than the work) about 15 years ago and work with one of the teachers I hated as a kid, which made me realise just how much she cared for the students and how much work she did for them. I gained a huge heap of respect for her that I'll never forget.
Your teacher should have known better than to put you in a situation where you might have been exploited but I'm so glad she had your back when she realised what was up, she must have been mortified that she could have been complicate in that without even realising. However, it's good to know she was thinking of you when she thought a good opportunity had come along for you, and I hope whoever the would be comic writer realised that was a terrible move on their part.
