Shorted Bus (2011 Grand Caravan)

  • In this video we tackle a very intermittent issue in a Grand Caravan where the wipers stay on,
power windows inoperative, power door locks inoperative, and almost every trouble light on the
dash lights up. In fact, the instrument cluster displays a No Bus message.
During one of these occasions, Jordan connects the WiTech2 scanner to determine what
modules are offline. As well, he scans for codes, finding only a communication code. (Of
course!) The scanner shows that all of the modules that are offline share a common bus.
Using a wiring diagram, Jordan determines what wires to probe in order to scope the bus. The
scope pattern shows the bus pulling battery voltage, indicating a shorted module rather than a
    wiring issue. (Phew!)
After removing panels to access the suspect modules, all he needs to do now is wait for the
problem to re-occur. And wait. And wait. When the problem rears it’s ugly head again, the
    problem is quickly located.

Hi, good video, informative. I am in Australia and have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 Litre CRD, export model for USA specs and RHD. A year ago I did have to replace the DTCM and while in the repair shop the car locked itself with the keys inside. I don't think that should happen even if it was accidentally locked; I have the door handle with the lock button and passive entry. Then all seemed OK but a few months later the doors would not lock by FOBIK key but would unlock using FOBIK. Doors would lock and unlock using the door handle OK. Not a big deal so we didn't bother. Then a few months later the alternator burn out. We had DTC code U0100 lost comms with PCM/ECM A. I have put a new alternator in and still have the same DTC, no crank no start. CAN BUS tests at 60 ohms OK but Voltage between Hi and Lo is both 2.47V, therefore shorted CANBUS either in wiring or in a module. All accessories work such as power tailgate using the FOBIK, the radio, the seat memory and movement, the windows up/down, the steering unlocks but now the doors do not lock/unlock with the door handles. I have replaced the PCM and no change, and I have replaced the TIPM with no change. The WINM has power but it seems like it might be immobilised because most everything works but no start. I cannot get a VIN-specific workshop manual anywhere including the local Jeep dealership who say they can't get one from Jeep either. I have written to Jeep Customer Service several times and get nowhere. The wiring diagrams I found online are mostly incorrect for pins in use, the wire colours, and the module location so mostly not for my particular model. I have pulled most of the car down looking for BCM, TCM, RFHM, PEM and so on. This has been very frustrating. The BCM seems to have 7 connectors and the only place I can find that is under and part of the TIPM. I also think the RFHM is actually integral to the WINM. I can't find the Passive Entry Module. How do I find the actual causes of the fault? A local Auto electrician is helping and is stumped too. Is it a door module like in your example, would that cause a no crank/no start? Is it the Wireless Ignition Module although it seems to recognise the key when inserted [I have removed the push button for now, is that a problem?]. Many thanks if you could think of something. regards from Australia.

I am having trouble with my dodge journey, it shot off as I was driving 2 different times and it wouldn’t start, i left it alone for like 10min, and then it started back up. and I get codes u0002-88, u0100 and u0101, the battery was recently replaced, I’m hoping it is just a loose wire somewhere by the battery my car doesn’t say no cam. I’m gonna have to do some troubleshooting. Thanks for your video it’s the only one that has given me a place to look 🤘🏼👀👍🏼

Thanks for the video! Sad that the engineers created something so complicated to run down the issue. A plastic module that in the cost of the Toal car is pennies on the dollar cost hours of Mechanic labor. With technology I hope they can create something that once you put it on the scan will tell you EXACTLY were the problem is so the auto owner doesn't have to pay hours of labor to find a $5 part that malfunctioned. Yet I am so thankful for the video it was very informative Seems to be a Chrysler, Dodge Jeep issue for sure.

So you would just have to replace the bad module then right?

  • @JoeCoool59

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it's a short in one of the modules on the bus, shouldn't removing power to thoseoduces do the same thing?

That looks like the same problem I am having. My windows jump when I press down on the driver side, and the pasanger side. I wonder if this is a indication. How do you get the panel of the door now? What did you have to replace?

Yes, you can apply the same diagnostic technique, providing that you follow the procedure as it applies to the Journey. ie - Correct wiring diagram, etc, to ensure that you are on the right track. The important part is determining which modules are being drawn down before taking the time to pull covers off etc. Good Luck!

So what your saying is that if the scope was 12 volts or higher then it would indicate a short in a wire but because it's lower then it's most likely the can bus high module . I'm hoping. If u do happen to read this. I know nothing about electrical and no money to pay someone and no friends that can or will help so it's me or I don't get it fixed your video has been vital to me figuring out how to preed I can't thank you enough for posting this is not an easy issue to find valid info on I've found. Have been lost on what to do for yrs. Now and pressed for time do to my console is out and needed a smog to get my registration stickers so again huge Thanks !!!!
