So all of the problems that existed on 2nd 3rd 4th generation haven't been addressed for 30 years and they still persist on the 5th generation. Well done Chrysler!
I have bought 3 caravans to date and usually trade them in around 60,000. I'm still driving my 2018 caravan with 250,000 KLM and seeing many issues. Transmission failed at 190,000 Klm and the oil manifold leaking oil at 245,000 KLM. The power door locks failed at 220,000 and now hearing ticking noise in the engine. But hard to believe the original brakes are still good. Great video!
thank you so much. I am elderly and I don"t have anyone to help me. And now I can relay what is going on with my car. You are awesome. Thank you again.
Is another sign that your tipm is bad is that the vehicle will just shut down or won't crank. Do not make a mistake and replace the fuel pump or the alternator - it is the fuel pump relay and you can either wire a bypass or buy another rebuilt tipm. I learned this the hard way by replacing things that weren't broken.
I have never read a post so true in my life. I have or am experiencing all of these with my 2008 dodge caravan. I've thought Midas was playing games since I find myself changing brakes twice a year. My headlights now do a delicate dance of off and on, my window will roll down at random and have had issues with both passenger doors. It's been hard shifting off and on.
As a previous owner of a 2012 I can surely attested to every single one of those problems popped up in my wonderful 3 years of ownership. The concept of this van is excellent. However, the amount of problems it had and the amount of dealership visits, and yes I did buy the “lifetime” warranty at the time was absolutely ridiculous. The dealership I used was so bad at customer service I drove out off their lot and right into a competitors lot and took a loss. Brakes, brakes and brakes, never ended. Transmission clunking to gear shifter getting stuck. Water problems in the door. Doors opening on their own in the parking lots. Air conditioning in the rear not working. Recall on rear vent windows, fix was to pull the plugs for a year until they had a “fix”. Dodge/Fiat whomever never again. They besides this van make great looking vehicles, maybe worth only leasing but not a long term investment. Good luck!
The fix for the premature brake wear is to upgrade from the original “single piston calliper” design to the “dual piston calliper” design. This upgrades the rotors from roughly 300MM all the way to 328MM. One stipulation is that you must have the 17” rims to accommodate the extra size of the callipers. To me, that’s well worth your money and sanity!
@@jamiemartinello6436 The dealer replaced pads and rotors 1.5 years/20, 000km ago, and they’re gone again on our third Caravan. We’ve had more trouble with this ‘16 than the other two put together.American car manufacturers never learn. They went through a period when they ignored customer demand for smaller cars in the 70-80s, and everyone bought foreign cars as a result. Then they sold cars that rusted out in 5-6 years. Now they are cutting corners, putting out under built cars. We’ve had 3 Caravans. The next vehicle will be an import. It’s nice to support local, but they have to put out a decent car.
Quick check before anything else on the power sliding door: open the flexible wire harness inside the track at the bottom of the door, and check the wires. It's very common for one or more of them to simply break from the constant flexing. This could especially be the case if your door first begins to operate intermittently, and then over a few weeks stops operating altogether. I found two broken wires in that harness - soldered and sealed them, and the door's been working ever since.
Never had an issue on my 2012, maybe I got lucky or traded it in before it got too old. Currently downgraded to a 2008 (needed a wheelchair conversion van for my mother, and it was already converted). This one has manual sliding side doors which I prefer anyways. I had a friend with the previous body style 2007 and he had issues with the sliding side doors, can't remember if it was both sides or just one. But, now he has a Dodge Journey, so all doors are conventional hinged doors.
Have a 2005 Dodge caravan with 470600 miles on it original engine and trans until recently have transmission problems but it served us well went and got a 2010 that was pre-owned had some work done and now it works well love my Dodge caravan
I replaced my rotors with Brembo coated rotors last year. Paired those with Ceramic pads made for coated rotors. Brakes beautifully now. 2014 30th anniversary edition SXT.
We have 2005 Grand Caravan 3.3l Standard fuel injection. We bought it flood damaged. Yes! The TIPM would mess up the door locks. Pull the fuse and wait a minute, reinsert the fuse and they would work again. We have owned it for five years, from 160,000 to 270,000 miles. Tune up. Water pump. Belts and hoses. Radiator replace. Engine is worn but still runs smoothly. Transmission shifts perfectly. Just replaced starter. This is my all-time favorite vehicle to own and drive. Would love to resto-mod it but no time left to do that. Love my Caravan!
I had a 2009 with 300,000 miles on it, also a 2008 with 320,000 miles. Mostly highway driving. Typical issues, water pump, tune up, brakes are a big issue especially if you are driving in high temps.
Worked for a company that maintained a fleet of about 50 2011-2019 Grand Caravans (they rotated them out after about 230-250k miles). We did a lot of trans cooler lines, they develop leaks over time. Rear shocks start to rattle after about 100k. The front outer marker lamp bulbs burn out quite often, and they kinda suck to change. I would say the biggest issue we had was rocker arms going bad. The 3.6 Pentastar will develop a ticking sound, and it typically is the rocker arms going bad. My personal van that I bought from the company with 210k on it had a tick from long before I bought it. When I pulled it apart to replace the rockers it had worn 1 intake cam lobe each on cylinders 1 and 3 completely flat from the rocker roller locking up and grinding away. Van never felt down on power and never had a misfire or CEL. I ended up replacing the engine rather than pull it apart to put cams in it. But if you catch it early (as soon as it starts ticking) you can replace the bad rocker arms and save the engine.
funny about the rear shocks... i hear a lot of those vans going around with that noise.. i always thought it was suspension links.... i dunno... overall probably an ok vehicle, but not the best. ive switched to toyota and lexus, and i'm likely not going back for awhile.
just bought a 14 GC with 209k, lifter tick had a Chrysler tech buddy replace the lifters and both cams from them wearing down. Engine is super quiet now
Can p219a code which is air fuel imbalance be related to bad rocker arms? I have had the engine tick sound for about 3 years and I have this p219a code now. I replaced injectors, o2 sensors, map sensor and still have this code. Can bad rockers cause air/fuel imbalance?
I'm only here because I saw an ad on Craigslist for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 86000 miles. They're asking $3,200 and that's fair. I get to meet seller today at 3:15 p.m. and now I'm not so sure it's such a great deal. But thank you for posting such an informative video.
Great video! If I could add a sixth - often the actuator for the rear heat/AC goes bad, resulting in one or the other stuck. In other words, you may have the A/C blowing cold up front, but when it is set to cold in the back all that comes out is heat! (This can happen for Passenger/Driver zones as well) The problem is an actuator that is small and easy to replace (inexpensive, too!) I've had both the rear and passenger actuator go out on mine. Quick and easy fix
Thanks for posting this cuz I just bought the same and plan to do lots of traveling/camping in it. 78,000 miles now. The transmission does clunk sometimes from park to drive tho.
1. The breakes were updated in 2015 to the "heavy duty" brakes, and 17 inch rims. Wear is a non-issue on these later models. 2. TIPM isnt an issue unless one drive in deep water, or carelessly hose down the engine. 3. The oil filter housing being plastic, is well known by oil change places by now, after 11 years. 4. Automatic doors is only an issue if you have them. They can also be manually shut, overriding the mechanism. 5. The retainer in the trans was updated around 2015. Basically these are solid vehicles with very few flaws, especially later models, 2015+
The TIPM unit has an easy fix that an engineer created. It is a wired fuse that overrides the problem area. I put one in mine and have had no problems since.
That's the difference between Toyota and FCA...I drive my Tacoma hard and it will not quit. Do all required maintenance. Toyota builds the best there is.
I abuse my vehicles, but keep them up and use the best liquids and oils and they have been good to me, thus far....I cannot drive them like a grandma lol
The information that you've given me is that is exactly what I need seeing that I just recently purchased a 2008 Dodge Grand caravan sxt. With the information that you're providing me it's allowing me to actually understand and know the vehicle that I have. The more videos that you do on 2008 model will actually help me to fix any and all problems that I have currently and in the future. My heated seats switch doesn't work for either the front driver or front passenger side. It looks like I have a donut in the back middle section of the inside of the vehicle that looks like a table could go there which is odd. And I have that slippage a little bit in the transmission like you explained. So far so good, the more videos you put out the more information I received the better my vehicle will be running thank you very much you have a blessed day
Hey guys, thanks for the video of a vehicle that I actually own. I've bought parts from you and will continue to do so. Your videos are very informative and helpful. Thanks again
The problem with the cracked oil filter housing was what I suffered on my 2016 Dodge Journey crossroads. That 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 is in Jeeps and Dodge. The problem was covered under warranty by FCA but still why would you make that part that can easily be overtorqued out of plastic?!? Now I do all my oil changes at the dealership so if it cracks again...they are going to fix it for free!
My 2013 has run like a champ now at 116000 miles. Did have brake problems at about 70,000 miles. Needed a new fuel pump at 116000. But it runs great! No complaints overall.
Are you saying that the oil leakage in the oil filter adapter is not caused by sealing rings, but by cracks in the plastic? So if you change the oil filter carefully, then this problem can be avoided???
Our 2011 had multiple issues (especially the brakes!) Using oil, rear heater leaking under hood, BATTERIES! and we got rid of it because of it nickel and diming us to death. Our 2015 has been trouble free so far and still on the original set of brakes at 100,000 miles. They definitely made some improvements.
Well be weary! i have a 2015 caravan, and it has had some many issues passed 100k miles! im at 200k miles and the drive quality is so sketchy especially the brakes! it has stalled countless times after hard stops! be careful!!! and i have to mention weve had the transmission rebuilt, multiple coils replaced ETC. and this is the 2015!
2015 has had to have the breaks multiple times. We have the heavy duty bigger breaks. Totally replaced the rotors, calipers and pads twice so far. And have to do it a 3rd time right now. Just hit 100k
Our 2011 has been a nightmare. Electrical issues for years. Replaced the tipm and we still have electrical problems. Left door locked and won’t open. Going through brakes all the time. Something keeps happening where a new battery drains and fries the alternator or vice versa. I hate this van so much.
Let’s not forget the coolant hose clamps at the lower hose on the radiator. They rust and snap and coolant leaks from hose. Risk engine overheating. Easy fix with a good ole adjustable hose clamp.
I've had my 2011 for 6 year's and haven't had any of these problems. However the driver's side window regulator broke about 4 times now. So far I've done the brakes twice in 7 years.
Same vehicule. Haven't changed a cv joint in 7 years or anything engine related. Brakes are wearing faster yes. Had the sliding doors handles to be replaced. I also never use the Econ mode cuz it literally kills a good acceleration. Trying to get a good pace merging into the highway is also painful, especially in 4th gear (electronic management i guess). But reliability is excellent so far with 250k on.
At 170k miles now and I just now replaced both cv axles and the intermediate shaft, hubs, driver window regulator, 2 out of the 3 motor mounts, TIPM bypass, alternator, oil filter cover, both front struts and replaced all 24 rocker arms due to 1 having a factory defect. All in all everything is normal wear and tear except for the rockers. I only had an excessive brake eating once when I first drove the van but once I changed everything it has been normal. The van has been a great vehicle and is now being used as a service vehicle and always carries around a couple hundred pounds in parts without issue.
I have a 2018, 150,000 km and I do the brakes at least once a year, sometime more. I have never had this experience with a vehicle before. My Ford Van, which I had before this, had very normal brake wear. My husband's car is driven more but needs brakes far less often. Apart from the expense, there is the inconvenience of having it in the shop more often than necessary.
Brakes are not undersized, there was a design issue with the calipers, that causes the pad to be slightly stuck, so they create friction and heat even when no break is being applied. Measure the temperature of the rims after a long ride on the highway, they will be super hot even though you barley applied the breaks. Take the caliber bracket down and have a close look, you will see that it doesn't slide out properly. You can fix that with some hand-tools and a working brain, or get some QUALITY, name brand aftermarket calipers. Most of the harsh shifting between reverse and first gear, and stutter leaving in first gear, comes from the Eco driving mode. The engine / trans map is badly designed. Turn the Eco mode off.
I would definitely recommend the BR3 brake option for your 08-20 Grand Caravan! This upgrade gives you dual-piston front calipers and 1" larger front rotors plus the rear brakes are larger as well. Excellent stopping power and no brake life issues. Please remember that these are NOT lightweight vehicles...my fully optioned 15 Crew Plus weighs 4900lbs with 1/4 tank of gas!!
Hello, I'm a taxi driver / maintenance manager up in Ontario Canada.. We have 2 of these vans, a 2012 and 2013 . The 12 definitely had break issues, but the 13 seems to have a much beefier break set up requiring 17 inch rims as opposed to the 16 inch on the 2012. We have had transmission issues where the bands seem to of deteriorated to the point they plug up the filter, starving it of oil pressure, rendering the van immobile. Both our vans run remanufactured transmissions built spasificaly for fleat vehicles. We also had issues with the rear trailing arm bushings failing... having to replace them every few months... i'm almost considering having a machine shop to make me some sort of solid bushing as the shop cost of replacing is adding up....
We have owned our 08 SXT with a 3.8 since 2011. It’s always shifted hard from a stop but once going it’s smooth. The suspension is a little clunky especially compared to my BIL’s 2012 Chrysler. We’ve replaced a lot of stuff over the years and it does annoy me at times but it’s paid off and at 174,000 and will be our oldest first car.
ps allen I’m on my third caravan, current one has 150,000 miles. I found the problem with the brakes is the rotors. When I replaced the rotors with decent aftermarket ones never had any problems again. My brakes wear normally. Did not have any other issues he mentioned. I did change transmission fluid and filter every 60,000 miles.
I bought an auction 2006 caravan, easy repairs, spacious, liked it then I let it go...bought a 2009 Caravan new....loved it then bought 2011Town and Country loved by/from the original owner in 2017...I do have some of the issues in both but overall the 1A Auto "online certified maintenance guides" keeps both vans on the roads and saving money.
I made the mistake of buying a VW Routan (re-badged Dodge Caravan) in 2011. We experienced almost all the gremlins mentioned in this video, plus a couple more. First brake job at 24k miles and then again at 40k, both times rear rotors warped (which was supposed to be remedied by tech bulletin with beefier rear rotors). It was our passenger side automatic door that was a problem, solved by replacing a switch or relay (can't remember which). The a/c-heater blower fan started only working on the high setting and squealed sometimes. TIPMS was replaced when van failed to start (this was a nightmare of car not starting, getting towed to dealer than fault not found several times). The transmission had the hard shift issue, driving through the neighborhood where speed limit is 25 mph, the trans would search between 2/3/4 and then slam into gear once it figured itself out. It only did this occasionally but we could never duplicate the fault at the dealer. Left rear tail light socket shorted twice. And then the final coup de grâce... cam phasers on the 3.6 pentastar failed twice leaving my wife and kids stranded while I was away. Another sore spot was my mistake of buying a Dodge Caravan re-badged a VW. The dealer had little to no experience dealing with the problems and they certainly were not willing to stand behind the product. Unfortunately most of the problems started about 60 thousand miles in, so just out of warranty and VW would not negotiate one little bit. I'll never buy another Chrysler based product and will avoid VW as well. It was a terrible experience. The one good thing to note about the van, it was a supremely comfortable, spacious and well thought out interior. It had great acceleration and confident handling for a minivan... but the gremlins were real and hateful in this thing. At 88k miles we traded it in and went back to Hyundai Santa Fe, the best vehicles we've ever owned.
I own a 2012 dodge and it has 115k and its been bulletproof funny thing my motor went bad on my passenger side sliding door but i just shut the motors off. U do t NEED to use them
Tell me that when I got a kid in each arm and need that side door open now! or when it's raining you can time that open and shut right to jump in there! Or when you carry all the groceries and need that door open cause you ain't dropping a single bag to open that door by hand!😂🤣
my 2012 caravan has 60,000 miles, purchased it in 2014 with 24,000. In the past 8 months I've replaced the PCM, drivers window regulator, and alternator. Knocking on wood, none of these problems as of yet. Thanks for the info.
So 3 repairs on an 8 year old vehicle. Congratulations! You have beat the 2.5 repairs annually by a good margin! You must feel lucky having such a good vehicle!
Thank you. Very helpful and eye opening. I could not understand why I seem to constantly need brake jobs when I never had this problem with my Ford van.
+Pat D Thank you! We love empowering our customers and showing how to perform DIY auto repairs with our high-quality auto parts. 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I had a 2010 and that one liked to eat brakes and sway bar links. You need a special tool for the rear brakes that’s another annoying feature. The Y splitter for the heater core is another common piece, ask me how I Know. I have a 17 now and I think the front brake rotors are bigger, correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t changed them yet. Highly recommend Monroe load levelers in the rear
I've replaced the rear brakes on my wife's 2013 that I think I can do it faster than a mechanic and bring out all the tools I need the first trip lol....
You NAILED it with this list. I've had a 2005 and a 2010 Grand Caravan. Transmission shifting failed in BOTH. Brake pads wore quickly in both. Had TCM module issues, was kinda neat to be able to fix it by twisting the pins juuuust a little bit. Had wheel bearing failure premature. Also rattling exhaust issues (between the flexpipe and the muffler), poor aging on the AC system too.
Very well done!! Thank you for the info, I am planning to buy 2017 and was doing research and i found it very helpful. You are a great narrator and have great knowledge about cars!
I have a 2018 and can confirm these issues based on my experience, or on experience from other owners in the online car groups. I had to replace the lock actuator on the passenger side. It was cheap. Took 3 hours because I had to figure it out and it was hard to get to. If I had to do it again, I could do it in half the time. It was still under warranty, but it would've been more of a hassle making an appointment and waiting. Also, I don't like people working on my cars. Second, the TIPM. Heard of this issue. Also, twice in 3 years my lights and wipers went crazy for a minute. Fuse box gets super hot. Electrical materials used by manufacturer are garbage and melt. Fuel pump relay is common, but I haven't experienced it yet. But my drivers side blinker socket melted a bit. That shouldn't happen. Oil filter housing I'm careful with. It's plastic, and plastic gets weak and brittle over time. I should buy a backup for when mine breaks. Brakes, I haven't had an issue with. Purchased in 2019 with 36k, and am at 70k now. Not a big deal. Brakes are easy to do. I'm very interested in the part name mentioned about the transmission. I havent had issues yet, but I like to do my research before I need to do a job. I changed the fluid and filter at 40k miles. Theres no drain plug or dipstick, so they don't want you to do it yourself. But there's a trick to be able to use your oil dipstick. I'm going to change it again in a month or two. They say every 60k miles, but I do it every 30k miles. It wasn't hard to do, but having a drain plug would've helped. Also, never use eco mode. One thing that should have been mentioned is the rocker issue. I havent had that problem yet, but look it up. Starts with a loud tick. If you stay on top of it and fix it when the symptoms start, it will be easier. All of that being said, after 3 years of ownership, these aren't that bad. Every vehicle has their weak points. I am not a chrysler fan at all. I have low expectations. It was just cheaper than the competition, so what do you expect?
Hello and thank you! Possible to let me know what the mileage (give or take)would be on these problems? Going to look to purchase this specific vehicle for full time NOMAD LIFE.
I concur. I’ve had all of those problems. The only thing I haven’t replaced is the door motor. That’s last on my list. Just got a new transmission and need brakes.
Thanks for the heads up! Especially on the brake pads. I just brought a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with 101,000 miles on it about a few weeks ago and so far so good. I put about 1,500 miles on it and no problems. People put these rides down but I've been a MOPAR fan since the '70's and owned a few over the years. Never had any major problems with any of them. Chevy's, Plymouths and Dodge most of my misspent youth. Started driving Lincolns and Fords in my 40's.Towncars and Crown Vics. All good cars, Recently had a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica for about a year, fun to drive, blew the engine. Shy away from Chrysler. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for these trouble spots on this years ride and if I need anyting I'll be sure to look you up!
I've got a 2010 and the big issue we have is when the center console cuts off randomly. It cuts out the radio and blower motor. But on that same circuit is the power windows, turn signals and wipers. It may take just a few seconds to recover or a few minutes. On a hot day, it really sucks. Then when it recovers it may be fine or go right back out. It's intermittent and shops won't even look into it being an electrical issue.
Hola.. muy interesante tu video.. solo me gustaría si pudieras agregar como podria revisar el nivel de aceite de la transmisión ya que estas transmisiónes no traen la varilla para poderla checar.
I definitely agree with the brakes, so I switched to drilled and slotted, big difference. Although I don't have automatic sliding door, my doors stick and are hard to open on the drivers side, and freeze close in the winter. Ant ideas. Great video.
Spot on!! I purchased a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan from a pretty well known dealer. I’ve owned it for 5 yrs now! In the past 5 yrs I have replaced the radiator, ENGINE, brakes 3times (twice in the past 6months) alternator, battery, tires, rotors, spark plugs & coils, & now I’m sure transmission!!! I love the way this van is built cosmetically (little things like “stow n go seats”had me sold) but internally it has cost me a fortune!
I have a 2017, 100000 + km or 60000 miles. Still on original brakes, no electrical problems, no oil filter housing issues. It has been a great car. I hear a lot of stories about people having very good experiences with their Dodge Grand Caravan. I have also heard of people having bad experiences, and bad experiences with other brands as well. So I treat your van well and it will treat you well.
Me 2019 but I been dealing with Dodge vans for 12 years easy to fix then any other car to fix them cost you more money more headaches because it's hard to get to the parts Dodge and Chrysler E-Z to take out easy to get it fix love Dodge van 😷👍
Ive had no issues in 5 years with my 2016. Replaced battery, but those arent supposed to last more than 2-3 years anyway. Has been a great vehicle for us. Take care of it, frequent oil changes, replace tires before they are worn out. Still drives and looks like new.
I drive a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan and the first problem you mentioned about brakes confounded me. We bought it new about ten years ago now and it has 165,000 miles, and the brakes have never had to have been replaced. Last year I was sure it had been long enough but after bringing it to a mechanic to change the brakes he said they had only worn down halfway and that I theoretically could keep driving it for as many miles as I've had the brakes . . . which, at the time was 155,000 miles. I've never known any other vehicles to have brakes last as long. Edit: the only serious problem it has had is the flex plate has cracked, twice. The first time under warranty, the replacement around 140,000 miles. That should never happen.
My 2011 had the cazry windows, horn thing. Found out when I was changing the battery on the key fob and cleaning it. That the contact pads on the front of it came lose and where moving around. Bought a new housing for the key fob problem want away.
Replaced break pads twice in 4 month period/10,000 miles on my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. Thank you for the good info, I will be purchasing the high performance break kit.
Have a 2015 . Use it for work. Tools and materials. 240000 km so far. No major issues. Have a rocker noise issue at the moment. Changed the rear brakes and rotors at about 200000km and the front at 225 000km.
We had a 2008 Town & Country, replaced the brakes way too many times. I know have a 2015 T&C and the brakes are holding well after two years. I think Chrysler resolved the issue, at least on this model. Thanks for confirming my suspicions on the brakes on that 2008.
Number 4 the sliding left door is a factory recall. And the Dodge Ram emblem on the steering wheel air bag has a issue with popping and hitting you in the face when blown.
We have a 2010 grand caravan we have a knocking underneath when going over potholes or rough road we have replaced sway bar links strut mounts still have the problem.we had it checked out at the dealer they said the re is nothing wrong with the front end all they said that it was the after market strut assembly.
Could my tipm having moisture in it be the reason for the back air conditioning fan to work occasionally and for the van to have a sputter and slow starts but then to accelerate quickly?
I have a 2012 and my brake wear has been phenomenal. I got 80,000 km out of my original brakes. It all comes down to driving habit. I haven't had issues with any of those except for my auto sliding door which I'm not surprised about due to Canadian winters. 2012 with 320,000 km and going strong!
Bought a 17 GT model for my wife. We love the performance, room, storage flexibility and comfort of this vehicle. It's like a sports car with the capacity of a van. Why do they have a plastic oil filter housing? I perform maintenance on all our vehicles and this is the only one I have issues with. Placement of the o-ring on the filter housing is critical. I mistakenly installed it too high on the cap before a long trip causing a leak. Luckily we run full synthetic oil in all our vehicles. Could have been a much larger issue. Would love to see an upgraded metal housing or an upgraded modification to accept a traditional screw on oil filter.
Very helpful video thank you. I have noticed the heavy shifting in my 2010 DGC SXT. I have also replaced my driver side front wheel hub TWICE! Thanks again for the content.
I have 2014 Caravan and I did not have any problem , and first brake a change at 75.000 km . Now I have 126.000 km with the 2nd set of brake and I can drive at list to 145.000 km . All this depend on the driver I control the van from the gas accelaration .
I've put almost 300K km's on a 2013 and the oil filter housing is the only issue I've had. I can't help but think that the people going through brake pads so frequently have the basic single piston front brakes. There was a dual piston option, I've only had to replace pads every 3yrs or so. I think the transmission thing is blown out of proportion, as long as you don't consider it "lifetime fluid" you're fine.
I thought I was watching myself do a video talking about 2011 Mainstreet! Had it 3 years this June....TIPM twice, left sliding has closing issues sometimes, the brakes get hot sometimes and smell like they're burning randomly, trans does the delay at 40 mph at times and jerks, and same when I reverse at times. Never had so many issues in my life with a vehicle.
@@gianfrancoa Engines, transmissions, interior quality, and electronics are pretty damn good on these vans. I see them all the time in fleets with over 300k on original powertrain.
I have a 2003 dodge caravan for my daughter that uses a power wheelchair. We have had so much trouble with the ac we tried so many times to fix it including in dealers and with some local mechanics however the AC will only work for 30 minutes perhaps 1 hours the most and then stops again no one has figure was really going on with it, so sadly every summer or in any hot day we try not to use it it gets extremely hot I’m able to handle but for my daughter is a little more difficult. Hope you have an idea what it could be and make a video about it. Thanks for sharing ALL your knowledge with all of us. Lost of blessings to you and to everyone watching this your UA-cam channel. 🤍✌️
In my 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan the transmission cooler line became detached from the transmission, spraying transmission fluid inside the engine compartment and underneath the vehicle and emitting a cloud of smoke behind the vehicle.
How about the manual folding seats? I've had the release mechanisms for both sides of the middle seats fail on my 2012. We love having them, but now we have to contort our hands under the back of the seat to try and manually activate the latch.
You forgot one HUGE problem on these that I've seen happen far more often than the mentioned transmission issues. The 3.6Ls have an issue with the valves in the front bank cylinder head not sealing correctly over time, causing the CEL to come for a misfire code with no obvious symptoms. If you keep running it the valve will eventually burn to the point that it doesn't seal at all and then the engine will have a dead miss. It's covered under recall in most cases but Chrysler is having problems producing enough replacement cylinder heads for the recall. So you're stuck waiting for months to get it repaired, possibly not able to pass state inspection because the CEL is on.
I wonder if that was the problem on our van (2011 VW Routan), the dealer tried replacing cam phasers. Either way, we had so many other problems we got rid of it.
You are correct. This is one of the BIG issues on this vehicle, not that nonsense list of peanuts this video was about. However, they did in fact develop a new front/rear bank cylinderhead to mitigate this problem, with different valve stem coating materials, and seat+guide upgrade which started coming standard on all vehicles around 2015 or so.
I have all the problems mentioned above. But for the tipm, I open a literally the circuit board I clean it with alcohol for electronics, Then I put a layer of varnish. That's sold the problem of the feels box. It was acting really weird. I tried to replacing it with another one but even though it was the same year It was not working.
It never ceases to amaze me that most people don't anticipate problems while driving, due to the fact that they look just in front of their hood rather than several hundred feet ahead. As a result, they apply the brakes hard and thus the brakes wear out prematurely. You cannot help brake suddenly every now and then but as much as possible, anticipate your stops or slowing so the brakes are not applied hard. I had one of these 5th gen Dodge Grand Caravan and I only replaced the front brakes once in its 141 000 miles I had on it before I gave it to a friend! I used to be an Uber driver and my front brakes were durable because in most cases I applied the brakes gently, due to the fact, I anticipate slow downs and stops, well in advance. I replaced the rear brakes 2 times in the same mileage which defies logic, as 80% of the braking on a front wheel drive vehicle is done at the front wheels. The rear pads were 60% of the size of the front pads and that is why they wore out faster
Don't worry too much. I have a 2019 as well and it's my third caravan. The one I just retired was a 2007 with over 200k. Still ran fine when I got rid of it. They are good vehicles.
I am glad to hear that . About to buy 2019 . The brake problem could be the driver -1 foot on gas pedal and the other on brake = trans and brake problems and or not knowing how to drive . I had an accountant who didn't like his because he kept getting flats - He was also a lousy accountant .
Try to do preventive maintenance, it will help avoid most of these issues. And follow what this young man recommends. It will help prevent failures, especially catastrophic failures from happening!
We had a 2011 VW Routan, re-badged Caravan, and it was great until about 60k miles and became dumpster fire of issues. But we did have the obligatory rear brake rotor warping, having to replace them twice in 40k miles. The only positive thing I have to say is it's the most comfortable vehicle to drive long distance. I truly hope you have a trouble-free vehicle. I just couldn't allow my family to depend on that van, I travel too much and couldn't stand the thought of them being stranded.
Bought a used van. It was in limp mode (wouldn’t shift out of first) from the day after we drove it home. We had it towed back to the sales place and ended up suing the guy to get our money back. It came back and thankfully it seems to be working.
I still drive a 2003 grand caravan and it's been great, but this guy's right, I've been warned about the newer model caravan and don't plan to get one of them anytime in future.
My 2014 just threw all the limp codes and transmission stopped shifting into any gears. Shop said $3, 000 to replace. Would clip be less expensive? Looks like a Lot of work!
I’ve got a 2014 that had 160k on it when I bought it. It now has 235k and still doesn’t need brakes. The upgraded dual piston calipers are the best brakes I’ve ever had.
I just got to say 1A productions are great. The older ones not so much lol. But I appreciate the lighting, camera work and guys and gals explaining the work.
I own a Transmission shop and I am not sure what he is talking about. Maybe he is referring to the Switch Valve Plug bore in the valve body. They do like wear out. www.sonnax.com/parts/2632-oversized-solenoid-switch-valve-plug-kit
There is also a TIPM issue that causes the fuel pump to run with the key removed. An engineer is selling bypass solutions for less than a replacement TIPM.
Brakes - good advice, no trans problems yet om 2012, but am having drainage on battery, need to know how to track down the problem. Battery and Alternator checked out to be good at Auto Zone.
My 94 caravan still is a daily driver for me, owned for 11 years now and 337,000 miles and going strong
So all of the problems that existed on 2nd 3rd 4th generation haven't been addressed for 30 years and they still persist on the 5th generation. Well done Chrysler!
Chrysler is an absolute garbage quality product. Whole reason I'm here.
What do you expect from Fiat🤣
You should write this to Chrysler :)))
🤦🏻♂️
Finally a guy that gets the message out as fast as I’m listening
No “chatty” right to it
Thanks!!
You are right some times I skip the first couple minutes
Hi my van is loud and when I am putting my foot on the gas is when the car is really loud and it has a ticket sound whatcoukd that be.
@@stefaniewatts3813 The gasket between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe wears out.
I bought a 2014 caravan in 2017 zig zaged all over USA and had only brakes problems Still drive it and love it!♥️🇺🇲🚙
thank you so much.
As an owner of a dodge caravan I am grateful for your service. You have described my brake and haunted window problems. Many thanks .
Good luck!
+Toph Er Thanks for the feedback!
Fake news !!!!
Also- SOME 2013 models have this upgrade- anything 2014 and up has the upgraded braking system.
+Jamie Martinello Thanks for the feedback!
This right here. I have repaired wires on a 2005 grand caravan and a 2010 town and country.
Thanks. I’ll check that
This problem was fixed with the 2008 redesign. Haven't seen a wire break since.
I got the 2019, and i'm trying to upgrade the speaker, but i can't find a remote out. Can you help?
Dude, dont waste your Brembo money on an unreliable minivan.
@@mariakim311 mine has been nothing but as reliable as any car I have ever had.....ever.
We have 2005 Grand Caravan 3.3l
Standard fuel injection.

Holy hell just about everything you said happened with mine. 2014 Ram C/V
funny about the rear shocks... i hear a lot of those vans going around with that noise.. i always thought it was suspension links.... i dunno... overall probably an ok vehicle, but not the best. ive switched to toyota and lexus, and i'm likely not going back for awhile.
just bought a 14 GC with 209k, lifter tick had a Chrysler tech buddy replace the lifters and both cams from them wearing down. Engine is super quiet now
How much did it cost? I have the same problem.
I have a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan sxt 3.8 liter and it has been great all ten years, no major problems
Agree with all your points. Solid van.
It is great to know typical issues and he is friendly doing it a big plus.
So basically avoid the 2011-2014 models
I have a 2013 and it has 17" rims and HD brakes
Except the BS rear shocks, still clunking
The TIPM unit has an easy fix that an engineer created. It is a wired fuse that overrides the problem area. I put one in mine and have had no problems since.
Drive any new vehicle with love and care. Coast and dont speed you will save tons of money and no headaches

That's the difference between Toyota and FCA...I drive my Tacoma hard and it will not quit. Do all required maintenance. Toyota builds the best there is.
Won't do a thing for the RUST problems!
As far as minivans, my grand caravan has been as reliable as the Odyssey I had before it. It also was about $8k less.
Thank you so much Bill for your continued support of our company!
Good point on why should let the dealer handle the oil changes and not yourself or a quick oil change shop like jiffy Valvoline. Thx!
My 2013 has run like a champ now at 116000 miles. Did have brake problems at about 70,000 miles. Needed a new fuel pump at 116000. But it runs great! No complaints overall.
Was it ruining gas mileage?
Are you saying that the oil leakage in the oil filter adapter is not caused by sealing rings, but by cracks in the plastic? So if you change the oil filter carefully, then this problem can be avoided???
Our 2011 had multiple issues (especially the brakes!) Using oil, rear heater leaking under hood, BATTERIES! and we got rid of it because of it nickel and diming us to death. Our 2015 has been trouble free so far and still on the original set of brakes at 100,000 miles. They definitely made some improvements.
+Doug Wyman Thanks for the feedback!
Try 340k on a Sienna original everything.
Same year, replaced mine a month ago. Alternator just died. Yayyyyy
They fixed the brake issue for any of them after the 2010 models
Toyota managed less than 4,500 libs in a larger van, go figure.
Bad advise. The base Caravan has smaller steel rims and can't house larger rotors!
They should build the damn things to work, not under build them.
Would have never got in the center and found my debit card without this! Thank you
Hello, I'm a taxi driver / maintenance manager up in Ontario Canada..
Yikes, I'm buying a 2015 and I'm scared!
We have owned our 08 SXT with a 3.8 since 2011. It’s always shifted hard from a stop but once going it’s smooth. The suspension is a little clunky especially compared to my BIL’s 2012 Chrysler. We’ve replaced a lot of stuff over the years and it does annoy me at times but it’s paid off and at 174,000 and will be our oldest first car.
ps allen
I’m on my third caravan, current one has 150,000 miles.
Sounds like you laid out a simple maintenance plan with online tips and tools and have been successful in implementing this. Well done sir.
Surprised the santa fe is your best car

Oh ya, also the rear heater core / rear AC is a common one, and the swaybar / engine mounts. That all being said, for a cheap van it performs awesome!

Why do you suggest not using eco mode? I've got a 2020
What is wrong with the Caravan eco mode?
+Taxi Jax Thanks for watching our video we hope these common issues help you on future repairs!
Dodge is a Chrysler product
Get ready for front wheel bearings. Might as well do the rears as well.
Thanks for this, I’m looking to buy a used caravan and really appreciate this information so that I can keep an eye out for problems. Thanks again
Dont buy one that is tick tick ticking really fast. You'll be doing engine repairs within a year or two.
Buy a Toyota Sienna van. More reliable.
Hola.. muy interesante tu video.. solo me gustaría si pudieras agregar como podria revisar el nivel de aceite de la transmisión ya que estas transmisiónes no traen la varilla para poderla checar.
I definitely agree with the brakes, so I switched to drilled and slotted, big difference. Although I don't have automatic sliding door, my doors stick and are hard to open on the drivers side, and freeze close in the winter. Ant ideas. Great video.
+Tino Arreguin Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Try using a spray can of WD40 before the cold weather sets in. Just spray it around the tracking and door frame.
Agree. My sliding doors are useless in the winter. I am tired of having the kids climb over the front seats every morning with their boots on.
I just bought a 2019. Thank you for sowing g issues that could occur in my new van.
+Graham Bent Thanks for the feedback!
@@1AAuto I got a 2019 Dodge grand caravan gt yesterday

Thanks for the information. We have a 2019 and randomly get brake issues. Usually after long drives.

Have a 2015 . Use it for work. Tools and materials.
240000 km so far.
No major issues. Have a rocker noise issue at the moment. Changed the rear brakes and rotors at about 200000km and the front at 225 000km.
+simeon karadjov Thanks for the feedback!

I have a 2013 and having the same issue, have you fixed this yet?
Also, Dorman makes a very nice cast aluminum oil filter housing to replace the OEM plastic one.....
Very well presented. Your employers, that is 1A Auto should give you a hefty raise.
I have a 2011 Grand Caravan and it's the Passenger side sliding Door that act's up! Same Issues?

Could my tipm having moisture in it be the reason for the back air conditioning fan to work occasionally and for the van to have a sputter and slow starts but then to accelerate quickly?
Does Dodge Grand Caravan has an expensive maintenance fee? Or it is categorized as a good economical car? Thanks.
You forgot about the loud power steering pump.
Well, at least "1A Auto Parts" will be SMILING all the way to the bank!
+matthew shattuck Thank you for your order! We'd love to hear about your experience. Here's a link to leave us a review on Google: goo.gl/i5JFNY
Bearings are well known issue. I've replaced all on my mother 2010 at least once on the second one rear again at 176k.
What could be making the sound on the rear driver side wheel when you hit a bump? It’s like a rattling noise
This is such a great video! My family and I have had this long running joke, The Vanley is possessed! Now we know why.
+Angela Wierda Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Are these issues also apparent in Chrysler Town & Country Minivans?
It's the exact same car
This has been well done,
Thank you for the info, I own a 2014 and I too had brake problems!
Can’t forget the struts, rear brake calipers, dog leg rust, and rear shocks. Everything else seems rock solid on these vans!
Well, after all you mentioned not much left
+***Classified*** Thanks for checking us out!
@@gianfrancoa Engines, transmissions, interior quality, and electronics are pretty damn good on these vans. I see them all the time in fleets with over 300k on original powertrain.
Driver's front caliper for me.
Just bought a 2013 Grand Caravan. Thanks for the information. Will be watching for these problems.

Thanks I have a friend who needs this information...
Is that why I can't get the o2 rear bank sensor to work?
Any chance you could explain how the transmission lockout, retainer, and TCC work and how they interact with each other?
We have a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and it hasn’t experienced any of these problems, but now this video has me nervous for what is to come lol
I have a 2017. And so far my only problem was my after AC canister leaked
We are looking to buy a minivan mainly for travel/camping. What make would you recommend for fewer repairs down the line?
Excellent question, I'd like to know the same.
“Obviously boo!”. Awesome. Keep up the good work.
+Michel Devost Thanks for the feedback!
What is the part number for the transmission retainer? Thank you, it is a great video.
