- Electricians day installing additional sockets off an existing circuit to find the consumer unit has been upgraded with no testing carried out.
Faulty circuits have been connected into the new consumer unit and the wiring in this property is shocking!!

I don't know how the wankers cutting corners can sleep at night. The problem seems to be the lack of any recourse to the different registration schemes. Does anyone ever get "struck off" NICEIC or similar? The fact that someone has put a thumbs down already shows the attitude of some twats out there. They know they can get away with it and they will just carry on.
The NIC only seem to have one rule, that's 14b, I think, and that seems to relate to everything, when you see a contractor has been removed, it doesn't mean they have been struck off, they could have, but they could have retired, closed the business etc.
The only time the NIC will prosecute is when they catch people using their logo, and I don't know why any body would do that, because the NIC will have anyone, just a corporate monster.
Been in nic for a few years now,was run on a charity bases with no fees, now your right there a corporate monster, that you pay your annual fees then when they come around once a year, they sell there books on whatever ,like gas Safe no omph
@@tww5719 your right, when i first joined they were a charity, and when i had a moan about the fee, all they would say is they are a registered charity, if the guy who started it, could see it now he would be turning in his grave.
@@acelectricalsecurity 👍 you must be like me nearly retired ,will only miss the social side 👍
@@tww5719 ha ha not quite, i have a bit to go, although if someone from the nic sees what i have written i could get chucked out next week as its my inspection, but thinking on i paid them not long ago so i should be ok 😂😂😂
Chris, I know people hate you calling out bad workmanship, but I think it’s a good thing. These people are a dangerous embarrassment to our trade.. you good job.
When things don't go as planned from between safety, functionality and looking pretty you can exclude pretty and you can reduce functionality but never cut safety...
This is Prime example of how most of the houses I work and have been done with no Certs backing up the work either
Hi Nick, he said "you good job again" this can't continue, Chris will have to get his own phrase, seriously though, he should have said "you bad job" on this one!
Another fine example of how part p has helped to clean up the electrical industry, thanks Mr Prescott 👍.
I don’t see a problem with showing others bad work it’s a great way to educate customers and aspiring electricians that watch this channel. Great video especially like the wireless socket looked like it was siliconed on too lol 😂
What I personally find amazing is how you guys have all these requirements for testing and ensuring proper wiring, and yet concealed junction boxes are allowed. Our wiring standards in the US might not be all that great, but at least they got something right by not allowing junction boxes under floorboards or in other concealed locations.
Three electricians registered with competent persons schemes on the job before Chris. So as a householder I have a 1 in 4 chance of getting work done that is safe. Why would I not do it myself? Why pay someone to put my home and family at risk? At least I would know where all the dodgy junction boxes are and how many spurs off spurs. Hell I might even have splurged on some Wago connectors and boxes and drilled the joists instead of notching them. I have electrical work I would like done but have no confidence that I can identify someone trustworthy and no confidence that the schemes will weed out the bad ones.
Yeah your right, or you could be unlucky and get 4 tossers turn up, and it's like everything there's two sides, the public side, where on the face of everyone does a good job and if it goes wrong you have the back up of part p, the governing bodies, building control etc, then there is reality, where nobody is interested if it goes wrong, and it's dragged on and on and on.
And eventually you give up, and pay to have it put right, and the cycle continues.
I just responded to a comment above and I think part of the problem is part p and the short courses that say that somebody has a qualification without experience .I did electrical work for a number of years and I spent 4 years in college to get my certificate and I learned so much just being around the electrician I worked with, there is so much to learn concerning correction factors, maximum demand, diversity and I would say those courses do not even cover these .I had a change of career a few years ago so if I now wanted to do major electrical alterations legally I would have to contact building control even though I am qualified I don't have part P.
It is concerning that someone can do a short course and get a part P licence and legally do this type of work so I understand what you are saying.
Without degrading up and coming Sparky's,best advice to you is to pick a old school electrician
My question is, where was the home owner while the job was being done? I believe that if home owners were present and asking why the sparky was doing the work in the fashion he was working, there would not be as much shoddy work.... An old Italian proverb says “ Under the watchful eye of the owner the horse puts on weight and is healthy thy.” On the other hand if you hand the horse off to a worker the horse will never receive the same care.
@@pasqualeparente9776 95% of home owners would not have a clue a good job from a bad job,as long as it looks ok from the outside and it works there happy
Fair play to James, at least he remembered it was a duff socket, the last few apprentices we've had would of forgotten!!
This house looks like the electrical wiring was done in india. A friend of mine visited their once and said it was amazing the amount of so called experts wiring up houses.
I wish there was a list of Electricians in my area, with UA-cam channels.
I don't care about "trust a tradesman" or what ever websites.. because I don't trust the websites, since they will have anyone go on..
If the trademan has a UA-cam channel I can see what he does. I could see if he bodges something.. THAT I would trust.
"that's our wireless socket" 12:17 🤣
Brings a whole new meaning to the disclaimer: Do not attempt to copy this
That socket is one of the new “Energy Saving” type, whatever you plug into it will consume less energy from that socket than it would if you were to plug it into a different socket
Wow that work was was really bad glad you are doing the right work and the correct way. Excellent work and thanks for the content
Edited stay safe and take care
I glad I'm not the only one uncovering tasty workmanship takes so much time to undo.
Thanks Chris & James
If those wasps knew how unsafe that place was they’d have gone next door to nest!
Different property
Good to see you have a young one James - your apprentice? The advantage of your UA-cam channel and with Nick, Jordan and others it’s showing customers what they should expect. If they cannot show you the quality of their work don’t hire them. Unfortunately it does seem to be the case there are a lot of poor quality sparks who really are not doing the job other than for money. That’s what is shocking.
Sometimes it’s easier just to rip out and start from scratch. But the quality of some work from so called ‘electricians’ is just mind boggling.
Mate you should get a head mount for your camera! Would make us see everything you are + you have both of your hands free
Maybe the installer of that socket thought it was a wireless kinetic one😁.
You may laugh but it's coming, and as soon as they can send enough power wirelessly, that's us all screwed, at the moment they can only send enough to charge a phone.
@@acelectricalsecurity Yeah if you want to cook people alive remember that even if you have a rather large 10 x 10 cm antenna mesh to get 10 watts you are already hitting 1 kW per square meter that is already going to feel like being baked by the high noon Sun as it will be heating your skin at the same power if you get the same distance from the transmitter. Trying to transfer hundreds of watts you can forget it as now you are talking thermal transfers closer to that of sticking your hand 1cm from the flame of an open fire. That is unless you use frequencies so high energy tissue doesn't absorb much of them but the problem there is that you are looking at gamma and x-rays which have other problems like the fact that even absorbing tiny amounts kills cells and trashes DNA etc.
@@seraphina985 yeah you may joke but it's coming
Did something similar to that socket at my first place - I put a flush TV outlet in the master bedroom but never got around to connecting it before I sold the place.
kind of reminds me of when my school was being rewired, it was a mixture of knob and tube, modern flex, mineral insulated, rubber flex, cloth covered and some single core. to top it off the whole site is supplied by 480v split phase!
Now that is a mashup!
As a layperson these videos are very handy. Never again will an ‘electrician’ (incl bedroom fitters etc) do a bodge and bugger off. I know enough basics to make sure they do things right.
Hi mate thinking of getting a mft but can’t decide which make to get do you only use kewtech or have you used other makes any advice would be really appreciated cheers keep the great videos coming 👍
I’ve used the newest Megger 1741 and to be honest for the price the Kewtech is fantastic and chat very beaten only downside is no rechargeable battery pack.
The screws not being tightened 'level' spoils a good install on the double sockets
TonkaTruc k overtightening a screw for the ridiculous reason that making them "level" is more attractive is stupid. You can crack the fitting, or damage the thread on the back box meaning the socket will never be fully secured to the wall. Tighten as much as is required for a firm fit, no more, no less.
Honestly what a disgrace ....those people should lose their electricians qualifications!
Problem is, you have to have them to lose in the first place
I had something similar to this in my old apartment, I just flipped the twin sockets upside down haha 😂, didn’t cost me anything and it worked great.
There are more sockets in that bedroom than my new kitchen!
You love them jobs chris 👍
I always find those sockets with no wires at them never work all that well 😂
Probably the safest part of the whole installation.
Definitely lol, the only shock you will get is the price to fix it lol
So that basically House of Junction Boxes?! F hell!! So bad and I would go for a rewire too. Absolutely hot mess!
The installation of that 'wireless' socket was done by an electrician which practice Teslaism instead of Edisionism.
Makes you wonder how many other houses have similar setups, cables everywhere and spurs off spurs etc.
I'm now quite use to the sting of alcohol gel in open wounds lol!
Hydrogen Peroxide is better IMO but yeah stings like a mother fker
i hate those type of sparks that go in just for a quick payout with no regard that the fact they're putting the home and owner at risk but i do agree that should be a full rewire upstairs
The thing is, many people complain about bad tradesman but for the most part, the bad/shoddy workmanship is because the client will not pay for the job to be done properly, ie neat and tidy and instead of walking away, the tradesman wants/needs the money so will do as the client requests.
That's some shocking work.... I done my apprenticeship, failed an exam at 4 years, as I failed twice on one out of 4 they wouldn't allow me continue, I got all top marks in everything else.
Just because I haven't the papers, I'd still know how to do a half arsed better job then that....
Crazy what qualified ones are doing.....
Admitting you failed your AM2 twice is not something to be bragging about haha
No one can say anything about you picking holes in that work this time!!
There’s plenty of people that will do the job like that and think they’ve done a great job and deserve a tip.
Dunno how anyone could have called that work good or safe I know the basics when comes to electrics and even I know spurring off a spur would not be correct or safe. Glad they have the proper guys on the job now 👍👍👍
Socket not terminate now I have seen everything 🙃
Na James didn’t fall for the socket gag 😂😂😂
More joints than Bob Marley concert...😆
When I come across jobs like this I explain to the customer how awful it is and nearly every time I get the same response which is.... “yea but it will be ok won’t it??” 😂
Agree, but when it’s been like that for 5 years or more and it’s worked ok for them, I think they’re a bit sceptical!
Well, at least there was that one safe socket....what a total nightmare installation!
I'm confused with your tester when you was grooving dead. The led lights look like it was showing a voltage. If its ghost/back voltage how does your tester define between that and nominal voltage?
It was inductance
@@Cjrelectrical can your voltage indicator define the difference between that and nominal voltage? Not having a go, just thought it may be worth pointing the difference out to the young one or else he may get confused what what he is looking at
And this was originally redone done by a sparky?
Is there a norm in UK as to how low you can put a socket? I mean...in case the room is flooded in water or something.
There is something in bulding regulations now (if I remember correctly), but at one point in time, sockets were commonly put on skirting boards for some daft reason - and people just jeft em there, or 'upgraded' them to double sockets sticking out the front!
Why is that the first test everyone does, even myself, poke it and see what happens, then shake it, then test.
Why you in your state don't have junction box in the wall? And why don't wiring with conduit? It's so much simple to add a cable o change if problems...
Solid walls. Lots of solid walls. Most of the wiring is under the floors. or in the ceiling.
Shocking.......
All good fun. Has the wasp nest in the 1st property been exterminated?
👌🏻
@@Cjrelectrical Wish I still had pictures from one of my early jobs. About a dozen big nests in one loft, I didn't hang about to figure which one was active. They had an old windmill on the property too, asked if I'd like to see the giant nest up in there they claimed was a few metres across... No thanks!
This is the worst time of the year for going anywhere near wasps nests. The workers go out eating semi-fermented fruit, get pissed and then take one look at you. "Oi, you trod on my plums". Most die off. I think that they actually vacate their nest and build another one annually. Most you see are vacant but you can't be too careful.
Spur city did the installation come with stables in the back yard
Looks like a bungalow I’m supposed to sign off! Not a chance. Shame I’m really busy. I would like to sort it for the old gent.
Yeah James turn your phone off when the boss is recording ha ha ha
Absolutely scary. I might only be a DIYer but I would NEVER have cut corners like this... I completely rewired my parents house some years ago (before part P said I couldnt) - replaced separate fuses with a consumer unit, complete new lighting circuit (was old rubber cable!), new upstairs ring main and kitchen ring main. Bonded gas and water which were not done. Couldn't do any tests as I don't have the equipment, but sure enough it was tested not long after and everything came up 100%. Tested again recently as my parents have just had an extension built, and the only comment made was "old wiring colours" :)
Erm no you cant test anything as you arent an electrician. Absolutely deluded
@@adamsharp201 Well, house HAS been tested by a certified electrician and got a clean bill of health. I must've done something right... just because there's a lot of dickhead DIYer's out there doesn't mean we all are!
Looking at what you had to start with it seems even employing an electrician doesn’t necessarily result in work better than DIY
Was it a certified electrician though?
Just watched an ad with Thomas Nagy! 😂😂🤦🏻♂️
As if anybodys going to pay £3+ to join a lighting circuit together.. I'll keep my usual mass of ideal push fits shoved into the ceiling..
Not sure why, but if a person seems to be successful or popular, people can't wait to take a pop at them.
From what I have seen of him he seems a decent guy, I don't agree with a some of the things he does, but that wouldn't be a reason to have a dig. A lot of these guys wouldn't be in here only for him.
@Electric_ Traveller yeah true, he seems a decent guy, very honest telling about what's happened to him in the past, but fair play to him he is giving it a go.
I have no problem with anyone who does well, but the British are terrible for knocking a successful person.
@Electric_ Traveller yeah your right, he seems very comfortable Infront of the camera, I take my hat off to all these guys, how they find the time is beyond me, edit their videos all time consuming, but occasionally some will have a dig, but as you say he started the ball rolling.
Calm down I have nothing against Tom I wish him all the success in the world. He’s out there working hard and doing his thing doesn’t mean anyone dislikes him because there’s a bit of banter it’s only harmless fun. If you’ve ever worked onsite you would know that.
Down the flee marked one day me an my pall was thinking of putting a socket on the wall to trick people as there was a 20p charge from the people that had power to test junk they just payed for. So we took a socket with neon light in. Put 2 leds in an a 9v battery so it did light up. Did not go down well as people were buying stuff going over thinking it free power to test with. Seeing the socket there with no wiring sent me back to then happy memory's woring with old tony back in 1993.
what type of socket is that on the carpet
Unbelievable
My Lord ! Them sockets were ridiculous.
Makes me wonder, were they just lazy and not arsed or just completely incompetent?
I would say it’s 25 years of DIY (destroy it yourself) 1 shit socket then 2 shit sockets and before you you know it they have reproduced like rabbits and your house is coming down in bits of scrap cable
R. D. Who’s James ? Chris ?
R. D. Maybe his middle name tho 😀 CJR 🤷🏻♂️

Answer this question for me if you know?why in england dutch germany we use curve b and in france italy we use curve c,What is the use of the 1p + n circuit breaker,
and why monopolar circuit breakers are used in some countries and in others 1p + n?
Maybe make some videos about these topics
Lucky no ring mains here, all are spurs from the box, and with a 20A breaker as well.
I wouldn’t fancy that gas pipe in my attic! A little bit of a leak and a build up of gas in the attic and bang your house lands down in your local village!! Great videos, don’t mind the haters, we’ll keep feeding their horses, bloody cowboys!!
And I thought some of the wiring in my 1930s house was bad! Worst I found in it was a spur off of a spur from a ring, that was then spurred to a FCU that was wired to a 2 bar 1300W electric heater mounted over a window.
You can see why a complete rip out and rewire is often the best and easiest solution.
Are junction boxes allowed to be hidden in floors and walls? Or is it just common practice and no one says anything about it?
Junction boxes in inaccessible places must be 'maintenence free' types such as Hager 803's. (UK regulations) Any junction box however, is an admission of bad planning and design IMHO.
I'm not a domestic spark( build specailised geneartor testing equipment) but willing to bet there are more have boards out there being changed with no bonding/ tails upgrade no certs or installer info there really needs to be a tighter regulation for electrics there is for gas,
Shocking workmanship, diy’r would have done a better job.
@@r.h.8754 Unfortunately that's true. Some employees or contractors don't take their work seriously, or care about any implications. People wanting cheap work or cheap employees is a major factor, but should not be allowed as a profession. A Doctor is expected to do their job to the highest professional standard and not do work on the cheap.
I think some of that was done by a DIY person, because it was white T&E, a while ago the only place that sold white twin was DIY places, and when LSF came out, white was dropped from ordinary T&E, and used for LSF.
how is it legal to have junctionboxes under the floor?
Provided they are accessible or maintenance free you can have them. Don't like them myself, as its another connection you have to try and find in the event of a fault, like in this case.
how do they allow for junction boxs to be burried like that
Terminating all them jbs and slotting the top of them joists, somebody worked hard doing all that s**t.
Whoever first came up with a ring main has given people a lot of headaches.
Just drop in a 20amp mcb and don’t worry about the spurs off spurs
I agree, but what if the downstairs ring includes the kitchen.
Why would anyone mount sockets so low down to the floor ?? 🤷🏻♂️🤔
No plaster and brick to drill out and make good once the socket is in. Just one drill hole through the skirting board and fit the switch box to the skirting. Bodge job in other words.
That was an interesting video and a bit scary at the same time. I can't understand why anyone w9uld wire two three core cables into a single socket but I know it happens as a friend was complaining that the socket she plugged her vacuum cleaner in worked intermittently. I am not an ectrician but have done a few basic like for like replacement and sockets and stuff over the years so I thought it might just be a loose connection so I killed the power and opened the socket to find that mess. I put the socket back and suggested calling an electrician as I couldn't work out what was going on. The annoying thing is that the socket is in a really narrow space so no room for a double. Anyway, if someone could let me know why this would have been done I would love to know. Thanks.
It could still be on a ring main even if it's a single socket.
I’d have packed my tools up the client would be wanting someone to fix that disaster and probably a hell of a lot of money invested in it but to do it right half of it needs to be ripped out.
Rock and a hard place.
You have opened a can of worms this time.....!!!!
that is a bad job, would be easier to do it properly, quicker faster and cheaper, hope some one takes the wasp nest away ,been there myself ,i have found a lot of trades now take on the wiring ,and the problem is they dont look into why and the how of how to do it ,there is a reason why sparks go to school and learn about circuits and loads, dead testing and live testing ,as people not see electric in the cable ,they do a lash up job, only when draw to many amps ,over load, then it will go down hill fast, fire ,only good side is james gets to see why you need to go to school, learn to do it right ,test and certificate ,stick your name on the job, keep up the good work, love the vids, same here in bristol, lot shocking wiring ,i got fix, too, soldier on my friend ,pass on all your good wisdom to james,he has a good teacher ,he do well
As Chris said in the video, 3 NICEIC electricians have worked on this, and the client had invoices to prove it, so much for sparks going to school! Obviously those ones didn't pick up too much!😂
I walked off jobs all the time cos of these kind of finds, I remember at an exam I overheard one student telling another " just see how good the decoration is, and thats how well you do your job" ie shit decoration = low level install. Rubbish in it. Retired now.
I have come a cropper that way in getting an old car repaired. Now I always make sure to at least tidy up and clean the car to the best of my ability before leaving in for repairs. Neglected car will get slapdash work, well presented and clean car will get better work done.
11:26 I think that job has gone well past Shocking and is approaching Truly Revolting...
Mad how people don’t use dust sheets when chasing in a customers place. One of the first things I was taught...
Heck, that's what the hoover is for...
In the US that old work would have failed 100 times over. Notching joists, no nail plates, buried junction boxes..
0:54 Owch... why would you do that to us ;(
11:52 Well...
At least now you know why it doesn't work...
Customer half of the time “ well it works don’t it?” This is one of the reasons I don’t agree with the “you change the board you take responsibility”. Downgrading the mcb can get you out of Trouble but not grommets? Lashed up jbs under the floor? Make it law to be qualified same as gas and this shit won’t happen
Brad H What on earth makes you think that there aren't fully qualified and "properly" certified gas guys pulling exactly the same stunts? Having renovated properties in London and seen the appalling work and astronomical pricing of some, my reckoning is that perhaps one in four electricians or gas engineers operating here are actually doing a good job for a fair price. The rest are either overcharging massively, doing substandard and potentially dangerous work, or more usually, both.
This is awfully.great job chris
I don't know how you guys do it on ripping up floors and dealing with rings with all those hidden junction boxes run about. That would drive me mad. Makes me like our wiring in the USA with all radial wiring and well in theory no hidden junction boxes allowed. We have three exposed junction boxes but thats about it. With almost 800 sq-M single story house that is built on a slab foundation. The house is fed with dual 200A 40 breaker service panels (total 80 breakers) that is almost full and 99% of all wiring is in the attic except for the island wiring which is run in the slab from the wall. Every time I see the small panels that are 8-16 breakers it makes me giggle. I would love to see some newer large estate properties and how they handle all of that? Keep up the good work. Bad/lazy electricians really make it tough for the good guys. 👍👍 🍺🍺
Air powered sockets. Nice. A lot of those cables have been crushed in between boards so are probably pooped anyway. I assume that it was a shower of sheet inside the board? No doubt you will rectify properly but it is a shame there are so many lazy toe rags out there.
Looks like the subies have been here from north Lanarkshire branch!....pmsl!
Did you cut that box out with a knife and fork ??
You would think so unfortunately the previous tradesperson filled round the single socket with sand and cement and it just fell off
Wasps in the attic is always a no-go.
The place definitely needs a rewire, doubtful the previous electrician done any testing whatsoever.
that's shocking you should get the name off the electrician who did the rewired.
Do you ever wonder if any of these previous electricians watch your videos Chris and see you uncovering their horror show?
Bad workmanship seems to be the norm nowadays!
Those electrics are like having a car with wooden brakes and bald tyres.
Paul Tipton At least you would know if you had wooden brakes and bald tyres, and drive accordingly. Someone with dangerous electrics would only find out when they wake up to find their pyjamas are on fire.
@@spencerwilton5831 yeah you are right, I was saying in a round about way that any lashed in electrics may work but it wouldn't be safe, like the car would drive go places but if you skip out on tyres and brakes you are asking for trouble.
This is just the state of things today all the other electricians just bodged it and scarpered so there is some good money to be made if you want all the hassle putting it right but sometimes it gets worse as you go and can cost you money
....Just a positive comment I think putting a sheet of plastic under the area you are working might give you "Brownie Points" for respecting their property...
Just about Everything here has to be in conduit here but thats a wright proper mess
😂😂😂 the client should have taken a hint when the “electrician” hog tied the cat, hopped on his horse and jumped the garden gate.
Brings new meaning to the phrase, “fishing for cables”! 🤣
