    I think it’s too easy to always blame DIYers for dodgy electrics. I reckon many DIYers do as good or better job than a lot of electricians. A classic example of this is on one of the Artisan Electric videos where the home owner (a subscriber) had rewired his house and Corey came in to do some finishing and even he admitted he how well it had been done. Some people have pride in their work, others don’t care and this is is not dependent on whether they are a “professional” or “amateur”

    • @alerighi
      @alerighi 2 роки тому +18

      I've seen professionals do stuff that I as a DIY would never do, for example connecting wires with electrical tape (only that, without any sort of connectors, just the wire twisted and the tape on it), not connecting earths, using undersized cable, not terminating network jacks correctly (ok, you are an electrician, but I don't think that wiring a RJ45 jack without 10cm of untwisted cable behind it is all that difficult...)

    • @ratgreen
      @ratgreen 2 роки тому +16

      Agreed. As a DIYer but soon to be training spark I'm 100% I could do better than this in the video. It's crazy that the guy who installed this is qualified, and I'm not.

    • @simonparkinson1053
      @simonparkinson1053 2 роки тому +3

      @@ratgreen I think the installer claimed he was NIC registered but client found out too late that he wasn't, hence the 3rd party test.
      I seriously cannot believe that guy was qualified.
      Geez, it took a lot of persuasion and an interview with the head of department at my local college before he would even let me apply for the 2391 as the pass rate is quite low.
      Ok that's inspection and testing but there's a general pride to be had in your workmanship - and that guy certainly didn't.
      Getting a consumer unit neat takes a bit of experience and planning to get everything in the best order, but there's no excuse for the exposed basic insulation above or the absence of a tail gland.
      If the tails aren't long enough, you change them or have them changed.

    • @_tmmy_
      @_tmmy_ 2 роки тому +4

      Absolutely solid point that tho! As a DIYer myself I know a lot about electrical and I have partially rewired part of my house and also the shed - up to the most recent edition of the wiring regs of course! I tend to use maintenance free wago’s a lot as well and they are fantastic because you don’t have to fanny around with them shitty brittle plastic junction boxes which are completely useless! Of course that is just personal preference to use JB’s over wagos but they have to remain accessible as they are brass screws. I also try my best to do well as I can when I make off switches, sockets etc so if something needs to be altered later on it isn’t a spaghetti mess to untangle and everything can be correctly identified. Ive had a “professional” electrician round to do the spots in the bathroom when it was getting refurbished one time and nothing was wrong with the old original bathroom wiring before the whole room got ripped out but afterwards there was faults on the pull chord and the connections in the loft were almost touching the joists in the ceiling, they were cheap ass choc blocks wrapped in tape and there were hidden horrors in the studwork where the light up mirror was! I ended up having to re wire the bathroom and get it done safely! The spots as well had the conductors insulation sticking out the ends by about an inch and a half!

    • @_tmmy_
      @_tmmy_ 2 роки тому +7

      But in my eyes if you are gonna do electrics or any trade for that matter, you should take a bit of pride in your work and take your time so you know when you leave that everything is going to be all good! Can’t emphasise that point enough but some people don’t give a fuck about what they are doing and are just simply lazy, they just want the money and to bog off home at the end of the day! Shouldn’t even be an electrician in the first place if you have shitty workmanship. Also brushing faults and visible defects on the condition of the wiring under the rug on inspection is a very not-that-arsed attitude if you ask me, this is why properties need a good EICR!!

    I'm a guitar teacher who recently qualified as a domestic installer so I can better take care of my investment property portfolio, and I often find works like this when I buy a property from a retiring/tired landlord. All too often it's the same "electrician" working across the old landlord's portfolio... dreadful!

      I went to quote for an outside socket the other day. She had another Electrician in before me and he quoted 90 quid. Straightforward enough install but she was under the impression that was to much and he was “having her eyes out” I told her that was really cheap and asked if she still had his number because I couldn’t do it properly for that. She will have found someone to do it for a “drink” mate down the pub probably. But your right, you absolutely get what you pay for. If this guy portrayed himself as a qualified professional and charged appropriately then its difficult to to tell what sort of job your going to get.

    15 years ago we had an extension built, I took the opportunity to pull new T&E to new sockets that the property so desperately needed outlets, the bedrooms only had one socket, the lounge two and the kitchen two. The CU is an old Wylex fused board that couldn't be changed although all the fused were replaced with MCBs / RCD and RCBO's, and the CU was tidied up because it was a right state. When the inspection was done by the onsite electrician and a commissioning electrician they said if I got the right qualifications that they would give me a job! Doing it is easy, doing it right is what counts.

Those certificates were NIC so I think some feed back to them is really warranted, I know it’s often regarded as shopping on your own but these people are a danger to the public and should be treated as such . Although I’ve been often critical of the NIC , they will investigate a installation if they feel a public safety issue has taken place . Which ever from seeing your video would seem to be the case . Bless you you do seem to be a bit of a magnet to have to deal with this sort of mess . I have just added a socket behind the TV in my mums lounge, Easy enough, chase out for the cable and back box, then I pulled a leg up from a nearby socket and dropped it down to the new socket, then ran a cable from the new socket back to the nearby socket. No need for joint boxes or anything. (It's a bungalow so moving cables is pretty easy in the attic) Plus I used grommets on the metal back boxes, plus I fitted an earth flylead to the metal boxes as well.
    I did find a DIY socket installation in the brickshed joined to the bungalow installed by the previous tenannats using underrated flex, plus when I took the socket off all three wires fell out and I was left holing the socket.

    With everything shown in this video, is it any wonder that in the US and Canada, all rewire jobs must have a local permit and inspections from the planning commissions. Or as in Canada ESA to insure compliance with codes.

    • @lukerediger8431

      The last panel upgrade I was involved with, the guy from NB Power walked up to me assuming I was the on site electrician and handed me a new meter tag and said I could pull the meter on my own then left.
      The Inspector never showed up, but the permit was signed off as accepted.
      The Licensed Electrician made a mess out of the main panel including letting the bundle of lives too close to the plate screws and shorted out the microwave circuit. That was after he drilled an extra 3" hole in the side of the new panel because he didn't measure the mount up.
      If it wasn't for the permitting system and inspections I could have done it myself, but the way it's set up you have to get a licensed electrician over or you have to wait weeks between stages to be "inspected"(extorted).
      I traced and labeled all the circuits, ensured the panel was ready to be swapped. Replaced all the pony panels down stream, checked all the circuits for code violations, the licensed electrician only had to disconnect the wires, drop the panel, install the new one, reconnect the circuits. Cost me 2 grand and he left a shit show behind.
      The system is only as good as the people enforcing it, and it's all security theater as far as I'm concerned.

    You can fix the flicker by not using 30 or 60 FPS on your camera, switch to 50 so it matches the frequency of the power grid

    An nic contractor is not meant to be signing off 3rd party installs unless instructed by building control, napit members can.
    It's obvious the EICR is rubbish just like the install.
    The customer can complain to the NIC plus building control he may get some compensation if the second guy is NIC registered.
    Am I surprised no, there's a lot of people out there that don't care and just want the money.
    And the fault lies with the governing bodies and building control, because both don't care, I have lost count how many times I have told the NIC about their members work, and nothing gets done.
    If more people got killed they may do something about the state of the industry.

      They're only interested in prosecuting registered members. DIY Tom, Dick or Harry can have a go doing whatever they like. Without suffering little backlash.
      The truth is if a "competent" person is doing any works to substandard level. Then most probably most their work is of shit quality. No two electricians are alike. We unfortunately have the good, the bad & the ugly In these trades. Still many of us take pride in out work.

      NECEIC 🤦‍♂️auto correct. I get the cynicism but a governing body is supposed to be just that I think Chris said in the video the person signing it off as registered therefore if they are failing to meet standards they should be held to account. That’s what we as sparks and ultimately the customer pays a ‘NECEIC” registered tradesman for.
      If the governing body is failing then they them selves should be reported up to Secretary of State who owns the HnS act.
