In this video, @ 2:10, the flip-out screen on your Canon R5C displays white lettering on a black background in Video mode, similar to the Photo mode; how did you set this up? Thanks for the video. To keep shadows clean using clog 3 on the R5C, I find it's possible to overexpose into the super whites. It may look a little over exposed on the LCD display but if the highlights don't flatten a few percentage points past 100 IRE on the waveform monitor it indicates there's still information there. Works particularly well with raw as you can lower the ISO in post and get back to correct exposure with shadow detail looking a lot cleaner and highlights still in tact. Using a color managed workflow in Resolve also helps as it provides a larger color space to grade in prior to outputting to rec 709.

    Do you have any videos on shutter angle? I understand what the 180 means but coming from photography I’m not sure if I need to make any adjustments if I want a more frantic look to my scene. For instance shooting 30fps in 120. It makes it look jittery which is what I want for some of my films.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому +1

      I don't have a video about it, but it's pretty straight forward. Shoot at the base ISO of whatever log profile you are in. Shutter speed is double the frame rate. 24p ->1/50, 30p -> 1/60, 60p-> 1/125, etc. Get your proper exposure using the aperture and a variable ND filter (if it's bright outside or if you want a very low aperture).

    Are you planning to do photography review for R5C? Interested to know how or if absence of IBIS affects photos in different situations? Is lens based stabilization sufficient? Can I treat it just like R5 in absence of IBIS?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately I focus on video stuff on this channel because I personally don't do much photography. As far as I know, the R5C in photo mode is identical to the R5 without IBIS.

    • @RolandAyala
      @RolandAyala 2 роки тому +1

      Regarding the effects of no IBIS on stills, it's a math problem that only you can answer for how you intend to shoot. It should go without saying that if shooting handheld in low light, you're going to sacrifice IQ (by cranking ISO) to maintain a sharp image @ 45MP assuming aperture already wide open. The Lens OIS helps, but, compared to an R5, you're giving up several stops by not having IBIS. Frankly, I think Canon got it right by not putting IBIS on the R5C. IBIS is designed/intended for stills photography to deal with jittery hands, etc., but its effects are seen when shooting video w/ sweeping motions and it makes the video look very amateurish IMHO -- this holds true for all systems (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.), but esp. w/ Canon w/ it's wobble problem when shooting at wide angles.

    Can you also compare R5C and R3 dynamic range in a future video? In Gerald Undone's Imatest score that he showed in his R3 review it shows that the R5 has actually higher dynamic range in video. Could you ever get the chance in the future to compare both in this regard? Thank you!

      800 is the base ISO for Clog 3. It will give the best balance of DR in terms of highlights and shadows. If you lower the ISO below the base you are shifting stops of DR to the shadows: ua-cam.com/video/AWzqLE64TzI/v-deo.html

    If you have an external HDMI recorder / monitor, does it also capture the false color and other tools (menus, settings, etc) or does it somehow know what is the pure video from the image and what is not? i.e. How do you tell the external recorder what parts of the HDMI feed you want to record and which parts you do not want to record?
    Or... perhaps, before you start recording, you must turn off all of the extra info.

I am shooting in Clog3 like you using cinema gamut. I have not used false colour but I will. I just played with a bunch of settings in my R5C and couldn't get it to limit to 80 so I'm not sure what's going on. I would make sure you are on the newest firmware. Also go into your Clog3 settings and reset it to Clog3 to make sure you are using the default settings for Clog3.

    I found if you do white balance with a ND filter on it doesn't work, colours turn out awful. Well on my R3. You need to remove for it to work. I just expose to the zebras at 65% (in conjunction with my hystergram). I know this is slightly high. But i find if i set it lower the subject is a little dark for my liking, causing me to add brightness in post which effects the image. I use Lumafusion so haven't got the tools of other editors for colour grading. Hope that helps some users. 👍

    I think that waveform monitor goes to 110%, not just 100. So you shouldn't see the red clipping bits until you hit 110. You have a bit more wiggle room than you think. Not sur ehow usable the highlights in the 100 to 110 range are (probably the yellow parts on the false color).

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому +1

      There is quite a bit of latitude in the highlights but I found if I exposed slightly less than when red showed up in the false color, the highlights would be clipped when I brought it to edit. I lower it just a bit more than that. If you are interested in the dynamic range of the R5C, I made a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/USqWeohuB14/v-deo.html

    Ok but how in the hell do you do this without a ND filter, I am trying to shoot outdoors in the sun and at ISO 100 and F22 my shots are completely overexposed, there must be a way to bring this down in the cameras settings it cant only be possible with an ND filter surely?

    • @jakebut
      @jakebut 9 місяців тому

      I mean…. assuming you’re serious, you could raise your shutter speed/decrease shutter angle and that will also help to darken your exposure. But if you’re shooting way below the base ISO, stopped all the way down, and with a super high shutter speed, your footage will look bad. There’s no way around that. It will be choppy, with a super deep DOF, and decreased dynamic range. If you’re shooting video, you really should be using NDs. They are essential essential essential for video work

    Sorry, but this is not quite right exposing in CLOG 3. You need to consider that Clog 3 is compressing highlights and shadows, and once converted to REC 709 it will decompress and hit the clipping point. This happened to me ones and I had to color grade everything manually. Yes if you are normalizing color manually, it might work but it is not correct. It needs to be converted into REC 709 first. Normalizing color is not just manually pulling contrast and saturation. The bottom line, when exposing in Clog you need to leave space for rec709 conversion.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому

      If you are exposing as high as possible without clipping then you might need to adjust the exposure in post before applying the REC 709 conversion. Depending on your software either use nodes or put the adjustments in the correct order.
      exposure adjustments -> REC 709 conversion -> extra grading
