Great video. I use false color for all my interview setups, and try to build in contrast to all my interview setups. Great video.
I love this video. The best video and practical usage of false color I’ve ever watched!
Glad to hear!
@@SoundItOutFilms how do you record the c70 screen to show the false color image? Do you use a Monitor?
@@wcsdiaries It was just a LUT that replicates False Color. Got it from the youtube channel Color Grading Central
Proper cinematography course type stuff. Thank you! Loving your videos!
Happy that I found your channel. You're talking about all the things I intuitively did kind of right in the past, but having someone explain HOW it works is an eye opener!
Thanks for showing this technique, I’m excited to apply it on my next talking head gig! I appreciate the way you visually show as well as make the video audio-only-friendly, and keeping the pace of the video really balanced. You’re one of my favorite creators on UA-cam!
Great video, as always!
I’ve always struggled with the “stock” false color ranges. After years of frustration, I bought a SmallHD 702 touch, which allows you to customize the false color ranges and colors.
Since then, I’ve eliminated the greys that are normally scattered around, and instead go from a dark brown (log IRE of 28) to a progressively lighter pink (log IRE of 55) with 18% middle-grey as the classic ‘green’ still in between 39-40 IRE.
This allows me to see the entire gradient of skin tones, represented in false color, by ratios.
Now, it’s just a matter of determining my contrast ratio. For example, brown to pink is a 16:1 ratio, and dark brown to light pink is 32:1 (super moody).
This has been a game changer for my workflow.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar
Woah, this really leveled up my perspective and encouraged me to use my monitor more when shooting since my camera lacks the feature. Earned a sub and much respect, thanks!
This is great content. I've been shooting for years and you just presented me with a lightbulb moment. Great observation and great explanation. Keep up the good work. Your channel really deserves to grow because your providing immense value.
Thanks Neil!
Mind blown 😮😮😮 subbed. All this time I’ve just been throwing stuff in the frame. 😂😂😂
You nailed it!
Oh man this so helpful. Ive been trying to nail exposure using middle grey but I kept thinking, the image looks bland in away, even though it was properly exposed. I kept thinking I had to change the lighting on me, but it makes sense to create contrast in the background. Can’t wait to try this. Also appreciate the “just get it in the pink” tip too. Loving my C70.
Incredible Video!
Super helpful in bumping the quality up!!!
You killed it man. Thank you.
Thanks for this man, I learned a lot. Question, I shoot a lot in natural light scenarios, and I like what you said about changing the angle or location slightly to control light more, but I'm wondering if you have scenarios where you purposefully expose to preserve highlights and consequentially underexpose skin tones, or what you do to avoid that especially at mid day. Thanks!
This was shockingly good my friend. Amazing work and great value, thank you 👏🏻
Appreciate it!
Excellent video. Need that part 2 very soon
Fantastic video!
Great video! Really smart way to help “see” a good looking interview.
just bought a c70 and found you....can't believe you have so little subs. very informative! you just got a new sub
Awesome video, thank you!
I needed this. Took me a couple weeks to get to it, but here I am!
So helpful, thank you for taking the time to share stuff like this. Appreciate it!
Solid exposure tip. I'm gonna try this now. Thanks!
You are excellent at explaining exposure, and over the years I've found info on nailing your exposure (especially in LOG) very hard to come by. Coming here bc I am inconsistent with my exposure on my C300MII and well I want a C70, even more knowing there's great resources like this on UA-cam!
This is really helpfull! Great video, man!
congrats good video, contrast talk sums it up well
Thank you, made me better in it.
Dude. This was quite impressive. Well done.
This is such a great video. I love your stuff man. I've been more cognizant of having some kind of specular highlight in the background because I tend to keep my backgrounds so dark that they lack contrast as well. It works in extremely moody stuff but for the general situation a variety of exposure levels is key.
Thanks for the tips! Gonna try this out on my C70 cuz most of the time I just add contrast in post lol
I think the interview you like have better highlight roll off that make it "higher contrast"
thank you, very helpful
Very interesting. I learned so much from this video. Thank you.
great video as always man! very helpful stuff!
Thanks Rob!
Have to give this a try. Thanks for another great video 🙏🏽
Thank you sir
Brady Bessette said in a video a while ago "make pockets of different exposure" but make them equal, so if you have 3 pockets of highlights, do 3 pockets of shadows.
amazing stuff
I like this but I reckon you could go a little hotter on your subjects skin tones, especially with a farside key. For eg the lady with the purple jumper, that's a nice shot esp with the sun slash on the background, but she looks a bit flat. You're shooting darkside which is real nice, if the left side of her face/cheek was a little brighter, creating a bit of a silhouette she'd get a lot more separation and it would balance better with how hot the other parts of your frame are, while also giving you more contrast. A slash across her hands could also work if you had the time and a spotlight mount. Additionally, having a backlight really does help, especially with dark clothes, even if it's subtle.
Excellent advice. But honestly, I don't mind that shot at 0:11 of the guy in suspenders standing on the sidewalk, even thought it is a bit flat.
This video is great.
Such an amazing video!!!! Fckn love this channel this is so good no one talks about this thank you bro!!! Also those interview shots are GORGEOUS!!!!! You have unlocked a new level / look for the c70 that I will now strive for. Is there anywhere that I can see those interviews in action?
Also how did you colour grade those gorgeous gorgeous interviews I am actually upset please tell me everything you can and are willing to share I’m genuinely taking back and have butterflies thinking about achieving this look.
Thanks man! The biggest part of that look is probably my Helios vintage lens… but I also color graded with Tropic Colour creative LUTS. I have them linked in the description. “Joker” was the one I’ve been using a lot recently.
@@SoundItOutFilms so cool man thank you!!!! I so look forward to / hope you make that colour contrast video!
Saweet!🎉Thank You
Started using the EL Zone on my SmallHD and WOW that solved that issue for me!
The before / after at the end, should be at the beginning as a hook for the video.
just great man, brilliant
100% Truth
Dynamic range.. ftw!
Very helpful video! Thanks
Great video! Thank you!
amazing
Eric! You may not remember me but I drove Uber back in 2016 and picked you up one night. I subbed to your UA-cam that day and have seen your growth! Very proud to have met you before your fame. Also, I saw you this afternoon on Mass Ave in Cambridge! No lie, I was excited to see you ride by on your bike! Thought you should know! Okay, see ya!
That’s nuts! Well I appreciate the long time support haha, thanks man!
@@SoundItOutFilms I know right! Keep up the great work! 👌🏿
i see that sunnysixteen mug :)
Busted!
EL Zone for the win
He just made the case for using a light meter, which is the next logical step if he continues in this current direction.
I am a photographer and i am a beginner videographer i use now always a greycard 18% an use false color. So if the grey card is green in false color (18% grey) then its okay i think?
Spot on! ;-)
wonderfull
OMG. I had the same mistake :D . AAA. Love this video
This is so helpful.
I’m on a zcam S6 and have always struggled with nice face lighting as the log and 709 image profiles on my cam are very contrasty. I was using Godoy slw60 and thought perhaps it was that light causing very dark shadow side so I upgraded to 300dmk2 aputure with the light dome2 - Still however getting the same issue. Do you know of any tests I can do to figure out if there’s something wrong with my camera or the way I’m exposing?
💯
The only good false color I’ve ever used is from SmallHD - I can’t believe so many companies use all of these varying shades of grey, very annoying to use (Atomos is the worst) - try out SmallHD’s false color if you ever get the chance
☕
It’s one hell of a mug, 5 stars!
seems like you're giving false color credit for you just having a good eye, being able to evaluate a scene and determine what it needs to be more interesting...
also, this is a fantastic video. I even learned something
Fantastic!!!! This video really really saved me!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Eric! Great video, thank you! Are you using an overlay in Premier to represent false colour?
Yea! it’s actually a LUT I found someone on UA-cam was giving away for free. So it’s not EXACTLY what it would look like… but it’s a decent reference
@@SoundItOutFilms Ah I'll try and have a look for it! Thanks for all the brilliant videos - they're a huge help!
great video - its one thing to know by gut what works and what doesnt work, its a different level to be able to break down and clearly communicate WHY something does/doesn't work. Clearly communicated analytical process. Definitely some 'a-ha' moments in this. Thank you! :D
Well said, I appreciate the comment!
What is this? A cinematography video that wasn't created just to try and sell us on clicking an affiliate link?! Who are you!?! Monster!
(No, but truly: Thanks for this. Didn't even know I needed to know this.)
Really great tip. Learning a lot from you as a heavy c70 user.
By far the most useful video on the C70 on UA-cam. Great stuff! Consider me subscribed and looking forward to future vids!
Another reason why you con trast false colour 😅
Cool man !
Really awesome video Dude! I'm going to be looking for this in my shoots moving forward. The example with Rachel at the end was especially good. Thank you so much.
Such a good video. The presentation and the footage to back it is wonderful. Loved it.
Thanks, man!
Simple and very useful video!
I agree that this kind of false colors is misleading. I choose the new OSEE Lilmon 5 monitor which has the same false color system as smallHD monitors (also less than 200 €/$!). Highly recommended!
Congrats again for this video!
So impressively concise. Well done!
Very helpful video! I’m going to try this technique to hopefully level up my videos. Nice work, thanks for this!
Great tips in this video. Thanks!
I always learn from you mate cheers from Australia!!!
Fantastic video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you. Generously informative content is my favorite content.
Great video man, super informative. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
Awesome info thanks!
