I’ve been using my new r5c for just over a week now pro, comming from the canon 5d mk4 it is such a game changer in so many ways. I have been a professional photographer for over 36 years and the r5c is by far the most impressive camera that I have owned.
I switched from a FX30 to the R5C three months ago, and for the first time I felt the camera is working for me not the other way around. The false color, wave form and super 16 mode has made the R5C a much more usable camera. The size and brightness of the screen makes it a great rig-free option for running and gunning situations. Thanks for the great video!
I don't want to be that guy but you're comparing a cropped sensor budget version of the FX3 with Canon's second most expensive small mirrorless camera. If you had switched to an FX3 or something comparable in price in Sony's lineup it'd be a much closer comparison.
@@SamuelJamesVideos Well, the three features he points out that have made his work easier (false color, waveforms, and Super 16 mode) don't exist on the FX3, either. So in his case, at least, the R5C is the better fit for his needs.
It is too bad that neither the FX3 nor FX30 has better exposure tools and, in the case of the FX30, doesn't allow for shooting open gate / 6K. Plus those Sony LCD screens... On the other hand, good to see that both those cameras have time code sockets (as opposed to the Panasonic S5 and S1 that I currently shoot with, that need time code jammed to it through mic port).
Wow! I was going to buy the Sony FX3 the other day (I have it in my cart) but decided to pull the trigger on the R5 C 10 minutes before watching this video (LITERALLY) and I am glad that I chose it instead! I already have an R5 but considered selling it and going the Sony route due to the much better dynamic range but now that I see how similar the DR between these two cameras are, I think I'll be happy with that purchase...plus, I don't have to sell my RF L glass to get GMs now!
Love this technical comparison its great when you want to dig deep without needing to spend hundreds of hours trying to take bits and pieces from various sources when here you can get a half hour of raw trustworthy facts thank you
This is a great comparison Josh! I've owned the R5C for the last 18months have managed to capture some of my best work. With all the fx3 hype on UA-cam it's hard to ignore. I think the biggest challenge with the r5c for me is the battery life which when doing larger projects my camera is already rigged up so hasn't been an issue really. I wouldn't take it for travels. The sensor does need light and in a way it's helping me learn more about lighting. The fx3 is an amazing camera and as you have have covered it's what works for people.
Incredibly well-done comparison, Josh. As you know, I also have a pile of experience with these two cameras. I found myself agreeing with about 95% of what you said, and that other 5% is trivial anyway. Really good comparison man. I just got the R5C and was shocked by its small size. The dedicated cinema menu system is insane when it comes to codecs and tweak ability. So far I'm impressed with it's 8K RAW performance and surprised by the D.R., this sensor is miles ahead of my 5DS 50mp.
Honestly, super surprised by the comparisons, especially how close the images were. I finally pulled the trigger on the R5C earlier this month when it was on sale, so much value at that price point now. And pairs great with my R6ii as a more video focused camera for high end video shoots! Love the cinema os on it too so much more than on the regular mirrorless cameras. Great vid man!

As long as the highlight curve is not flattening at the top of the waveform monitor there's no clipping. Easier to do this now that the waveform can be enlarged.

R5c 8K RAW Clog 2 to Ninja V+ in ProRes RAW (with BT2020… Cinema Gamut doesn’t work) is the highest DR in my testing. It’s stunning but needs heavy NR in post.
As someone who has used the FX3 extensively, the AF is definitely just OK. It needs significant contrast in the shot for it to work, which means it can get bad in real estate real quick. I prefer the AF in my R6 honestly.

@@marinrealestatephotography I was thinking slightly different exposures would be ideal for each camera also, but I'm just happy that the R5C is in the same dynamic range ballpark as the FX3, since I tend to be a bit of a Canon fanboy.
Josh, I really appreciate the in depth comparison. I'm a r6II and R7 guy, but have been debating between the c70 and r5c for way too long. This is my question with Internal Cinema Raw Light. From my understanding since it is RAW when you bring it into Davinci Resolve you can choose CLOG 2 and the Profile is exactly as if you shot it in clog 2. Have you had that experience in post? I believe you're a final cut guy, but as a davinci guy I have see other creators bring it in under the clog 2 profile and it matches the C70 clog2 profile. I appreciate your feed back. Have a Merry Christmas!
Well it's not exactly the same as Clog2 since the R5C can't actually shoot Clog2. The NLE interprets the footage as Clog2. The image will look different before grading than if you shot it in Clog3 because of how it maps the image. It won't match the C70 since the C70 sensor is different and has more DR. When I shoot the R5C and C70 together I shoot both in Clog3.
Incredible comparison Josh. Congratulations fot this video. I ask you a question: after these 11 months of video...watching this video with a present moment perspective...which of these two would you recommend? R5C or FX3? Ignoring that the R5C is a hybrid camera. Simply looking for a video camera for a travel or commercial videographer. Thanks Josh
Hey Josh, what a joy to watch your videos! I still consider the R5C (I own the C70 and a R6ii). But: the elephant in the room might be the R5 mark ii - couldn´t it be the case that this camera may combine the pros of the FX3 and the R5C?
Thank you so much! I am really excited about the R5II, but I have a feeling it will be more like the R5, a photo focused camera. I did hear a rumor a while ago about a potential R5C II, so who knows. I do really hope we see Canon come out with some cameras in 2024. Check out this video about my thoughts: ua-cam.com/video/-01YifE8kso/v-deo.html
Amazing comparison, thank you for this! Have you tested the R5C's micro-HDMI port extensively with external monitors? That's actually the one concern I would have with this camera. Wondering how capable that port is compared with the FX3's full-size HDMI.
When in Photo mode, does the R5C has the same focus capability as the R5? I use mine often for full body portrait (70-200 f2.8) and has always been able to track, but also its vehicle tracking mode for car or aircraft in photo mode. Does the R5C enable the same phase detection as the R5?
Would love to know which camera you shot the talking head portion of this video with Josh! Blackmagic? Very filmic and pleasing! Cheers for the excellent effort and video.
I threw a couple Canon raw shots in an XAVC timeline with multicam on premiere Pro. Mind you I used proxies and premier Pro was giving me all sorts of unusual errors. Most likely because I just updated it. That being said I would love to see the video on the Canon raw.
I'd be interested to see a color test of the R6 vs the R6ii - I've had a heck of a time dialing in white balance on that camera, and I'm trying to do similar color tests like yours, but I don't have a color checker.
This was super helpful! Currently on the fence at getting either one of these. Needing a YT/lifestyle camera. Currently using C C70s and a Komodo X for work, but wanting a smaller YT/content creator camera. I have tons of ef/rf glass but damn is that FX3 so enticing and small ha
I have an R5c but sometimes have some FX3 FOMO. I had no idea that there’s no shutter angle or false color on the fx3. That alone is something I would not want to work around. At this point I’m so used to angle that I actually forget to adjust the shutter speed on cameras that don’t have angle. Also, I’m in such a habit of toggling on and off false color to check a scene, that I would feel kind of insecure without it. Another thought about the micro hdmi, we all hate it, and it’s just silly at this point, but it occurred to me the other day that I’ve never actually had an issue with it. It’s one of those things that we always assume will cause a problem, but it never has in my case. But I’ll still double down that it’s dumb. Haha 😆
Josh, thanks for doing the work! this is deep. Hey i was wondering if you every dipped into compairing the RAW of the canon vs the Sony, as I hope to shoot raw mostly due to my lack of competence as a camera op I need all the help i can get!
I haven't done a video comparing them but here are some videos about raw in these two cameras: ua-cam.com/video/Iy8PUIO-ReE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/0ZqJ46L7-74/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/gm4WcH5Odeg/v-deo.html
Why grade anything by hand in such a comparison while you could do a color-managed workflow in Resolve to a Wide Gamut timeline, and output in 709 for UA-cam? This way there would be minimum intervention on the image on your end
I'm confused. If you remove the battery life (like come on. they are so cheap) and the auto focus (manual focus most of the time anyway) Then what are the pros for the fx3?
With the R5 MK II supposedly coming with CLog2, does it make sense to wait and buy an MK II, or do you think the R5c will still be a better cinema camera?
All we have are rumors and wishes. Gotta wait and see what the camera will actually be. If you need a R5C now to make money then get it and go out and do your thing. There are always new cameras coming out.
Its not fair to compare the two.. :) the R5C is an actual Cinema camera. But its not fun to use without the batterygrib, ND filter adaptor and a V - mount battery I think.
Using the FX3 was a big problem in the production of the creator.. they needed a small camera that they could cras.. only reason they could actually use that camera was because of the Atomos Ninja V because the codecs wasnt good enogh. Or thats what they tell in more than one interview. Not saying its not a good camera, but a real cinema camera its not. @Broskisnowski
Hey Josh ... could Sony hypothetically come out with a new fx3ii with the ability to record in ProRes raw internally if Sony and Apple decided to do so ? Is this even allowed based on the Red Raw patent?? Thanks !! Love the channel and all the great information ...
I think Nikon records in N-RAW internally on their higher-end cameras. I guess they worked out something with Red regarding the patents on R3d log (Nikon claimed the patents weren't valid because RED had started promoting the technology (and explaining it) before RED applied for a patent. (I ain't a lawyer so be sure to verify.)
You're welcome. I highly doubt they will but ProRes Raw recording capabilities inside a camera. That would be a lot for them to legally sort out with Apple and RED. Sony could most likely include a compressed raw codec inside their cameras if they pay RED a licensing fee. I have heard Jared Land say they will work with any company for licensing. DJI and Nikon have worked out internal compressed raw licensing lately, I assume Sony could do that too if they wanted to pay for it.
@@Josh_Sattin I feel like if Sony came out with a fx3ii and had a few more cinema features like shutter angle and false color , even megapixels to down sample the 4k from 6k ... It would be such a beast of a film camera ..
The r5c is a fantastic camera you can’t go wrong with it, but canon put c-log 2 in it come on it’s time also the r3 should have c-log 2 other than that it’s an excellent camera.
I don't think that 'no EVF', and "low quality screen- need an external monitor and possibly the included handle" matches up with "nice small size". Personally I think the R5C is too small. Its reduced size compromises the ergonomic aspects in comparison to Canon's larger bodies. I never owned the C70 (but owned the 1Dc, 1Dx mII), but it seems like a great form factor to me: comfortable hand fit, spaced out controls and room for NDs-but still smaller than a C300-series. I don't think you could find a scenario where the FX3 is meaningfully smaller than the R5C. Neither camera (with lens) fits in a pocket, but both fit in a small (sling) camera bag. Something like a C70 or 1Dx mkIII is also the same size category. Next size up would be FX6 or 9, BMD URSA and cameras like that. To get to a smaller size you need a point-and-shoot with retractable lens or a mobile phone. Despite being quite a technological marvel, the R5C killed much of my enthusiasm for photo/video for the simple reason that I didn't enjoy holding it in my hand as much as my 1Dx mkII. I hope we can find similar features in a R3 or R1 body soon. At least it is a proper hybrid camera. If someone is only, or almost exclusively going for video, why not step up to something more proper from Sony (if that's their people)?
HI JOSH, MANY OF MY CLIENTS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT EXCESSIVE EYE STRAIN CAUSED AFTER WATCHING VIDEOS SHOT WITH SONY ALPHA CAMERAS. HAVE YOU HAD ANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCE?? ALSO MANY CONTENT CREATORS WHO USE SONY ALPHA CAMERAS HAVE SWOLLEN AND PUFFY UNDER EYES. IS THIS BECAUSE OF USING SONY CAMERAS? I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE VIDEOS SHOT WITH SONY ZV1 AND SIMILAR 1 INCH STACKED SENSOR CAMERAS DO NOT CAUSE MUCH EYE STRAIN. WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE?
Thanks for your answer, By the way I love your videos they are super helpful. I am the biggest fan of canon, I am not professional photo or videographer, I love shooting stills more than video but I love making short movies, I always had canon but now I only have RF lenses, I really want to buy one canon camera for everything but I am very confused because canon has a lot of problems. I also have not seen comparison between r3 and r5c. I don't really know which one is better for everything and also the biggest question I have, how important is an IBIS to have????Thank you

Thanks for the review. I don't own an FX3, but I think that it has at least a couple more exposure tools than you mentioned. I assume it would have zebras and the basic + / - exposure meters. Not saying this compares with the Waveforms and the False Color on the R5C, but zebras (again, IF it has them) can be helpful, too. Both CineD and (I think) Gerald Undone ran some dynamic range tests on the R5C and what they found was... uh... interesting. I ain't an engineer, but it seems like SOMETHING is going on with the A/D converter. That MIGHT be one of the reasons that they don't offer CLOG 2 on the R5 / R6 series of cameras???
You're welcome. Yes both cameras have EV meters (which I never use) and zebras. Those two things are in pretty much every photo camera. Video cameras should have waveforms and false color in my opinion. Here is a video that I made about the Canon log profiles: ua-cam.com/video/PGp2-Mu5ElI/v-deo.html
R5c images and videos looks so much better. The colors are better, the sharpness is beautiful. I dont get the point, why spending money in a sony camera. The Colors are not good, and the shoot looks most of the time mudy.
@@Josh_Sattin the fx3 was considerably noiser in the shadows. Like unsusably noisy with a purple tint. But now in this video it’s results look like exactly like what the BMCC6K looked like. Slightly greenish tint with no noise.
As I said, different days and different lighting. One day there might have been a higher exposure in the room compared to the window. It was uncontrolled and not fair to compare them to each other. That's why I only show two cameras compared against each other that were filmed at the same time.
no false color and shutter angle on fx3 WTF 5k of camera. This is why I can't buy Sony. You can't label the fx3 as cineline and not even have the shutter angle. Very disappointing. I will pair my zcam s6 with the r5c. the battery problem is relative since with a power bank the matter is solved
@TJ-po9ol never as good? ... bet if Idifference two images that was shot via third party vs native, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference - as most wouldn't especially in the mirroless realm. Arri signature, Cooke anamorphic, etc there is a substantial difference. 23-70 f2.8 looks pretty much all the same.

I ask you a question: after these 11 months of video...watching this video with a present moment perspective...which of these two would you recommend? R5C or FX3? Ignoring that the R5C is a hybrid camera. Simply looking for a video camera for a travel or commercial videographer.
Thanks Josh

Such a solid comparison
Thanks Geoff!
Yes, the R5C in photo mode should be very similar to the R5.
Would love to know which camera you shot the talking head portion of this video with Josh! Blackmagic? Very filmic and pleasing! Cheers for the excellent effort and video.
Thanks. Yeah I have been using Blackmagic lately.
Blackmagic 6K G2 - geni.us/JD5fRDA
Sigma 18-35 1.8 - geni.us/0JZdi
Hi Josh, now that you've used both the R3 and R5C... Which would you say is better in low light? Would they be comparable?
8:52 - I'm shocked by how bad this one shot looks on the R5C. How high was the ISO here, given it looked so clean in the high ISO test?
I threw a couple Canon raw shots in an XAVC timeline with multicam on premiere Pro. Mind you I used proxies and premier Pro was giving me all sorts of unusual errors. Most likely because I just updated it. That being said I would love to see the video on the Canon raw.
Awesome, been waiting for this video lol.
Nice! Thanks for watching!
I'd be interested to see a color test of the R6 vs the R6ii - I've had a heck of a time dialing in white balance on that camera, and I'm trying to do similar color tests like yours, but I don't have a color checker.
Unfortunately I don't have either camera. A color checker is a solid investment when you can purchase one.
Haha 😆
Pros and cons with both cameras, but bottom line... you can get great images with both.
Thank you for this amazing breakdown!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Josh, thanks for doing the work! this is deep. Hey i was wondering if you every dipped into compairing the RAW of the canon vs the Sony, as I hope to shoot raw mostly due to my lack of competence as a camera op I need all the help i can get!
I haven't done a video comparing them but here are some videos about raw in these two cameras:
ua-cam.com/video/Iy8PUIO-ReE/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/0ZqJ46L7-74/v-deo.html

Shutter angle is coming to the fx3
Hi Josh. Impressive both cameras. Thank you for this video. 👍🏻🌴☀️🌋🏝📸☕
You're welcome! Yeah both are incredible cameras. Thanks for watching!
Why grade anything by hand in such a comparison while you could do a color-managed workflow in Resolve to a Wide Gamut timeline, and output in 709 for UA-cam? This way there would be minimum intervention on the image on your end
Am sorry for the question, but in the Focus from Canon r5 c is it really so bad in low light situation like wedding ?
Please make a deep dive and guide for FX6
I'd love to but I don't have a FX6.
@@Josh_Sattin surely you could get your hands on one 😁
Fantastic content :) Will you be making a comparison FX3 vs FX6?
Thanks! Probably not. I don't have a FX6.
would be interesting to see if that shadows would be much better with RAW and C log 2 on R5C
At the end you said the FX3 had better autofocus, but I thought you showed earlier in the video the R5C had much better autofocus??
Epic comparison
Thanks for watching!
Love the fx3!!!
There are always new cameras coming out.
the MKII isnt a cinema camera, R5C is better for video imo. The MKII also overheats
So if i overexpose my r5c by 2 stops i should be able to have cleaner shadows just making sure not to clip the highlights 😮
Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/H7ndRK37ZkU/v-deo.html
Now I kinda want an R5c....
I sold my R5C to buy an FX3…. And you don’t know how bad it hurt in my chest, making the decision but I’m glad I didn’t bought the FX3 yet
The r5c is a fantastic camera you can’t go wrong with it, but canon put c-log 2 in it come on it’s time also the r3 should have c-log 2 other than that it’s an excellent camera.
which camera do you use for UA-cam videos?
I am always changing it up.
Thank you soo much!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Canon R5C and RED V-Raptor X all the way.
I like sony but will always be a CANON lover !
Go raw vs raw
Have you made a A1 vs R5C?
I have not. I don't have an A1, but that would be cool.
If only the r5c had a decent battery and IBIS :(
Waiting for r5 mark II
wow, the R5C hung in there lot better than i expected in comparison to the baller FX3 👏
R5C beats FX3 on color, operation, dynamic range since FX3 uses heavy de-noise
You definitely made your fellas Canon happy. 😂
Too late canon. Thank you.
I would rather see the effectiveness and quality about R5C photography because 99.9% videos on UA-cam are only about videography
In terms of photography, the R5C is identical to the R5 just without the IBIS.
I don't really know which one is better for everything and also the biggest question I have, how important is an IBIS to have????Thank you
@@giganadiradze You're welcome. Everyone's use case is different and how the IBIS or no IBIS will effect their image. This video breaks down the IBIS vs Electronic Stabilization in Canon cameras: ua-cam.com/video/pVnsGe5MO3E/v-deo.html
good video
Thanks!
One is Netflix approved one isn’t
They both are.
At last! 🤓
Haha yeah! These take me a while to make.
Unfair because raw internal on r5c
R5c images and videos looks so much better. The colors are better, the sharpness is beautiful. I dont get the point, why spending money in a sony camera. The Colors are not good, and the shoot looks most of the time mudy.
1 year old camera “because it’s an older camera”
In your last comparison with fx3 vs BMCC6kFF, the fx3 looked way noiser in the shadows.
These results are not consistent with previous videos.
That make sense since they were shot on different days with uncontrolled lighting.
This a beefy video:)
Hope you enjoy it!
no false color and shutter angle on fx3 WTF 5k of camera. This is why I can't buy Sony. You can't label the fx3 as cineline and not even have the shutter angle. Very disappointing. I will pair my zcam s6 with the r5c. the battery problem is relative since with a power bank the matter is solved
R5C = no third party lens
3rd party are never as good. Canon has the best 1st party lenses out there.
Sigma has crazy chromatic aberrations@@eddieyan3017
There is no way your R5C is better than FX3. Haha
The problem with the R5C is the RF mount and Canon’s third party lens policy haha
There are a lot of amazing RF lenses available, don’t see the issue here
fx3 is pseudo cinema camera
The R5C is a lemon so anything beats it. Seriously, even the maker of this video got rid of it. Now The Creator was filmed on the FX3.
The creator of this video currently owns an R5C and an FX3.
And you can clearly see that the creator wasn’t filmed on a high end camera 😅
He said in a different comment that he filmed the talking head portions of this video with his blackmagic 6k you dingus.
So many blown highlights in that movie, it was distracting
My eye just goes to the r5c images.
