thank you so much for this! I bought a R5C but didn't have the time to buy the cage and stuff yet. Now I got an upcoming job and delivery dates for cages are 3-4 weeks... it's just a small job but I didn't even think to use the battery grip, which I own for the R5 cause I didn't think it would fit. Will do the job until the rest arrives. Had a production in July with the R5C and had to switch the normal batteries every 15min which was getting really tricky in the end of the day because the charging didn't keep up with the camera running out of battery.
With my R5C, I get around 8 hours of recording time with the Anker 87w power bank. With 25600 mah, It works quite well, lasting about 2 1/2 times longer then average v mount batteries. However, it's less convenient to to mount on a rig.

Great video! Thank you. This is exactly how I build cameras. Smallest form factor as possible. Some people miss the point of a small camera by making a large rig. Good job
This is a very nice video showing compact options with the R5C. This convinced me more about getting this camera, especially for having the ability to shoot great pictures. It is a very good option for documentary and even for making short films with this setup you just shown. You just add a wireless go and a separate sound system, like a Zoom H5/H6 with a boom and a decent shotgun microphone with a timecode generator and you are good to go! Thanks for the follow up!

Almost the same setup I am looking to do. I got a v-mount that has the USB C power in itself so you can use any battery, but likely to use a USB Power Bank as my main power source since you get more capacity for cheaper vs the v-mount batteries. Just need to figure out the best plate to attach the cage to my tripod quick and easy.
Thanks! Great run down of options. Clears up confusion on my end about shore powering the rig, USB C will work great for me. Just got an R5 C for some VR work, looking forward to it! Also, didn't know about the mount on the base of the Smallrig cage, that's perfect for my Ronin. Glad I just like Smallrig and went with that cage, ha ha. I have the Tilta Ring for the Ronin which has USB power ports as well.
haha my kit exactly lol So compact and great! Also connect an ANKER battery to the V mount FXLION battery so I have zero power problems all day filming
It makes sense why people choose the C70 over the R5/C. Once you rig it up to be useful it ends up costing the same as the C70. The difference comes down to built in ND vs full frame sensor.
Thanks for the great video! One major question: at around 11:40, you use a "basic arca swiss" screw you had from a previous project to attach the quick release to the base plate. What are the specs for that screw? I'm putting the rig together and have hit that roadblock. Thanks again! Your presentation style is great. Cheers!
Hey Josh this video and other videos on shooting cinematic video are super informative and helpful. Just a question …are you planning to do a video on camera monitors or make a recommendation ?
Glad the videos are helpful for you. I don't currently have any plans to review monitors. I do recommend Small HD if you have the budget for them. I have the Cine 5 and 702 Touch. Both are excellent.
Josh, I'm testing the new Smallrig 99 V-Mount battery and I'm having some issues. The battery has basiclly the same specs as the FxLion in your video and was wondering if the FxLion has the same issues. Using the USB-C the camera will not recognise the Smallrig battery when it's powered on. If the camera is turned on, the only way it will recognize the external battery is to unplug and then plug it back in. At that time the camera battery icon on the lcd screen turns gray and I know it' running on the Smallrig. Just realized today that if the camera's internal battery is less that 100% the camera will detect the Smallrig when it's turned on and off, basically it works as you would expect. I have tried 3 different PD rated cables including the one that came with the camera. Also, I have the cable you use in your video. I have another cable coming in a few days but I'm thinking it might be a firmware issue. BTW it will charge the battery via USB-C when the camera is off. I have a long email sent to Smallrig trying to get answers but nothing yet. This battery is so new that there's hardly anyone talking about it. I was wondering if you are having any issues like this using the Fxlion battery. Thanks
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues. I didn't have any of those issues, but I also don't have a R5C anymore. The only weird thing that I encountered was that you need to have a battery in the camera for USB C PD to work. Hopefully Smallrig gets back to you about it.
Just a heads up, I had the same hot shoe setup and it wiggles. It easily comes loose and you won’t have a solid hold. Best to go with smallrigs nato setup.
Nice presentation. I would like to ask you for a recommendation for Remote audio transmitter / receiver for shooting a "classroom-like" presentation, where the presenter is walking and a Mic on him. Possibly with 2 Mic in case another supporting presenter is on the set as well. Camera on tripod at the back of the room using battery grip for a presentation that's less than 2 hours long. TIA.
Great film Josh - could you post links for everything you just showed us, like the Arca Swiss, rods, USB-C right-angle cable, etc because I don't want to miss anything out that I would need to connect everything up. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for this video one thing about this black mumba cage do you find on the right hand side the grip around the shutter button has some play in it as you squeeze the grip and take photos it almost like they needed to add a extra mount point for the right hand side top strap fixing on the camera body to prevent this play I find that after some time shooting it can loosen the cage
I tried to save money and get a PD USB battery instead. I could prob use a small rig battery holder and mount that to v mount plate. If I wanted to use the rods and mount the battery.

But it seems that this is at 3.3 volts so you can take the stated mAh and multiple by 3.3 to get the mWh - then divide by 1000 to get watt-hours. Some brands advertise Wh on the web site so a little digging will produce better numbers. The other thing to watch out for is USB-C PD comes in several different flavors. Be sure to check that the power bank can deliver this type of power *from* *a* *single* *port*. I'm new to cameras and now retired I'm looking to get into wildlife and landscape photography as well as video so after researching I was looking at the Canon r5c over the r5 due to the 30 minute video recording. Have you noticed that the r5c once rigged out with the Nano One wont turn back on once if you power off the camera from video mode? I have to unplug the Nano One, eject the internal lp-e6 (wont turn on with nano one unless theres an lp-e6) and then boot everything back up again.
Great video Josh. How would you approach using the battery grip and a top handle? As the battery grip would restrict you from using a cage? Also, how is the battery life if only in photo mode (with a single battery)? Many thanks!
Thanks! Smallrig makes a cage to use with the battery grip: geni.us/x7NP I don't do much photography so I can't help you there. It will be very similar to the R5 in terms of battery life for photo.
@@Josh_Sattin Ah just came across the cage, thanks! Also, are you confident with just the 1 screw (connecting the cold shoe mount to the cage) holding the weight of the camera (+cage) and battery?
I really like your assembly. The idea of the compact battery installed behind the R5C is great and is much better than the power-bank attached with adhesive under the gimbal mount. With no monitor and no microphone (or maybe even a microphone) I hope your system is well digested by the DJI RS3 Pro! Thanks again from Italy! @@Josh_Sattin
Thanks for this video Josh! Does the NANO ONE stay secured to that battery plate when you snap it on? I have the NANO THREE and it does not lock. I’m wondering if it’s a problem with the battery. Thanks!
I have the exact same rig, and I just received my d-tap dc cable to run the ninja v from the fxlion nano one simultaneously. Unfortunately it turns out that the fxlion nano one can’t provide power to both the ninja v and power delivery via usb-c to the R5c at the same time. I will have to look into other monitor options with less power draw, or maybe a more capable battery. Just thought you guys should know.
Upon further investigation the problem might have been that the fxlion nano one was at a low charge. After charging it to full it seems to work now, but it might drop the usb-c power delivery after a certain point. I will test this further next week.
@@volkom91were you ever able to determine when the FX LION Nano One stopped powering not devices? I just ordered a few Ones to go with my Two because apparently I can’t fly with my Nano Three (155W). Curious if I’ll run into any issues. Thanks!
Hi josh, I got a question: If you use this canon battery grip. Does it become an "extra battery" package, so you can run 8k 60fps with all the camera lens functions on?
I need a battery for the R5C that doesn't block the EVF and doesn't require an external monitor!! I'm filming youth sports and I need to move fast. All the rigs I"m seeing block the EVF.
Hi. Thanks for the video. I am looking for charger for this v mount battery. Can you help me with it. How you charge this FXLION battery? It is the first time that I am going to use this type of batteries.
I have a UHS2 memory card that's 300 megabits per second but when I set it to record on the R5C it says it's not compatible. Then when I press record it works... Lol ever run into this?
I hope you will answer.... My main camera is a Canon 5D Miv. As you know it is great for photo but when it comes to video the dynamic range and 4k are not really enough for the market. Bow the question is: Keep the 5D and buy a used C70 body so I can keep my lenses (50 1.2, 70-300, 600, ts45 and 12-24) or simply sell it all and go for R5C with RF lenses or Sony A7 iii or iv with lenses?
Yeah, it's a tough decision for sure. We have too many great options right now. I have been struggling with this decision too, as you can tell. That video definitely sums up my thoughts on those two cameras and you need to decide what's best for your needs. Good luck!

Such a helpful video thank you!
Quick question, will the R5C + Small Rig Cage + Battery grip work on a DJI RS3 Pro?
Have you found out ? I’m wondering about this too
@@hjkhhjkh3635 unfortunately I never got a response. I ended up opting for 3x batteries and a large power bank.
this awesome, thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. You mentioned that you can power camera and monitor from same battery? How do you do that ?
You're welcome. Power the camera via USB and the monitor using the DTAP port.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you
Returned mine. Rigging it up should be optional not mandatory.
Amazing video here
Thanks!
Thanks! Smallrig makes a cage to use with the battery grip: geni.us/x7NP
I don't do much photography so I can't help you there. It will be very similar to the R5 in terms of battery life for photo.
@@Josh_Sattin Ah just came across the cage, thanks! Also, are you confident with just the 1 screw (connecting the cold shoe mount to the cage) holding the weight of the camera (+cage) and battery?
I shoot weddings so is that here a cage that allows the use of the Tascam XLR inputs on the 5RC?
Great content! A question : is this setup compatible with the DJI RS3 Pro gimbal?
Thank you. Unfortunately I don't have a RS3 Pro. Since the cage has an arca swiss on the bottom it should hopefully work.
@@Josh_Sattin
this might be a dumb question, but do they make a rig that can fit the grip AND the external power? with the same type setup you're doing here?
amzn.to/3SQlMEQ
Fantastic.
Can the battery power your ninja and camera at the same time?
Thanks for this video Josh! Does the NANO ONE stay secured to that battery plate when you snap it on? I have the NANO THREE and it does not lock. I’m wondering if it’s a problem with the battery. Thanks!
Hmm. Yeah it stays pretty well secured. I know some of the other v mount adapters had issues with the FXLION batteries.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks Josh! I have this same one. Maybe it’s just this battery? I’ve reached out the FXLION but they haven’t gotten back to me yet.
Getting a little hum in the audio around the small rig. It sounds like when I put a lav mic in the DJI Mic. I think u r using a shotgun mic though.
I wonder how heavy the full build is?
First you take Table then care all small parts, if any part missing you purchage another set?
Obrigada pelo seu trabalho. Muito me ajudou.
is it hard to manually focus while shooting handheld with the rods underneath the lens?
What minimalist bag would you recommend for this setup?
As another data point, I am able to power an R5C, Ninja V, and Hollyland Mars 300 Pro with the FXLION Nano Three.
@@pickleydoo everything stays on until the fxlion nano three dies?
@@volkom91 I’ve honestly never run it that long! I’ve only run it for a few hours at a time. At three hours everything is still going strong.
@@volkom91were you ever able to determine when the FX LION Nano One stopped powering not devices? I just ordered a few Ones to go with my Two because apparently I can’t fly with my Nano Three (155W). Curious if I’ll run into any issues. Thanks!
Good Job. Could give me the exact number of smallrig cage because in Italy I cannot find it? Thanks
Hi josh,
I got a question: If you use this canon battery grip.
You, sir, are FN Rad. Subscribed.
Thank you so much!
Hey Josh, can you mount the battery grip on a gimbal ?
Battery grip with 2 batteries plus the external battery 👍
Awesome solution, but if we’re being honest after all that rigging and battery hassle why not just get a C70? Probably lighter too
Because C70 doesn't do photos
What charger do you use for the V mount battery?
sir pls can canon R5c ring cage feets the R7 camara
Hi. Thanks for the video. I am looking for charger for this v mount battery. Can you help me with it. How you charge this FXLION battery? It is the first time that I am going to use this type of batteries.
You can charge it via USB C or a DTAP charger.
@@Josh_Sattin but d tap charger will charge it faster, yes?
does the r5c with battery grip fit on the rs2 gimbal?
I have a UHS2 memory card that's 300 megabits per second but when I set it to record on the R5C it says it's not compatible. Then when I press record it works... Lol ever run into this?
Does this setup works on a DJI RS3 pro?
I hope you will answer....
My main camera is a Canon 5D Miv. As you know it is great for photo but when it comes to video the dynamic range and 4k are not really enough for the market.
Bow the question is:
Keep the 5D and buy a used C70 body so I can keep my lenses (50 1.2, 70-300, 600, ts45 and 12-24) or simply sell it all and go for R5C with RF lenses or Sony A7 iii or iv with lenses?
Here is a video that I made about the C70 vs R5C: ua-cam.com/video/bOBjGup01jg/v-deo.html
@@Josh_Sattin Yes. I saw it. And it makes me even more indecisive
Yeah, it's a tough decision for sure. We have too many great options right now. I have been struggling with this decision too, as you can tell. That video definitely sums up my thoughts on those two cameras and you need to decide what's best for your needs. Good luck!
@@Josh_Sattin Thank you so much. Would you consider change to SONY???
@@ThorstenBergContentCreator I currently use both Canon and Sony cameras.
